- Motorcycle Crash in Wales
Obviously this video wasnt planned, so although it forms part of my current ride around Wales.
This video starts by going over the crash and what caused it, before continuing the ride.
Don't want to spoil the video but my bad luck doesn't end there today!
Its a day i will be glad to forget!
Hallo mate, just caught your vid whilst I had a spare min. I'm a Cardington instructor (ret) and a trail rider of 40 years experience. This is possibly the only honest video of someone's balls up on here. You answer all your own questions post incident and yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing. I hope others watch this and take something away from it. Especially the immediacy after the drop. As my grandad told me many many years ago (1930s tt rider and world tourer) breakdown? Fall off? Stop and have your pipe and think about what to do next. I won't go on about you shoulda coulda woulda etc. It's irrelevant. Pleased you are OK.
I should have pulled over and took a break straight away to be honest, i know its a single track road and hard to find somewhere, but wish i had tried to find somewhere. might have saved a dent in my right pannier!
I'm familiar with this little route, I've done it a few times. And as a relatively new rider thanks for publishing the video. Serves as a reminder that even on roads were familiar with, anything can catch us out no matter our experience or familiarity. On the plus side, bike looks fine, you lived to tell the tale and you gained a sub! Looking forward to chewing through your videos past and future!
Thanks and welcome to the channel 👍
Credit to you for sharing this. Many of us have been there, but it can’t be stressed enough - stop riding and take a good break! Your head will be in the wrong place to be carrying on. Relive your experience away from the bike.
If integrity and self reflection was a video. This would be it. Well done and thoroughly learned from it. Thank you Sir. Learn from it, move on and be happy. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👍🏾
exactly, another life lesson and a reminder that no matter how confident you are, mistakes can be made.
thankfully nothing broken so along with the lesson i didn't receive a large garage bill too!
Total respect for you in showing this matter . I am a fair-weather rider and cannot suggest any way you could have recovered from the bike getting into the mud at the side of the road. I hope only your pride is damaged Keep up the good work and a lesson learned andy c
"How did this happen" and "why didnt i escape" are the 2 things that ran over my mind for 2 hours after.
Sadly its just one of them things, good news is i wasn't hurt and the bikes ok
Thanks 👍
First mistake is buying that bike I have riden for over 50 years and bought a 1200 G.S. Worst thing I have ever done !
I went to the T.T. this year 2023 and the 1200 spoilt my holiday Firstly much too big and secondly too heavy Where ever I went I had to judge where to park where to stop etc etc On the twisties it was a ball crusher Dont get me wrong great on the motorway but anything else just forget it My mate on his Tiger found the same issues . These big bikes are a marketing ploy nothing more nothing less !! He droped his and I nearly droped mine on several occasions Dont let this incident have any affect fella it happens to us all but these big monsters dont help If you had been on a smaller bike you probably would have just lifted it out of the trash !! Fantastic to see an honest vid for once and not some ass hole trying to show how big his balls are Well done mate !!
Agreed they are heavy and hard to manoeuvre when engine off, i am setting off for 14 days round europe on it soon, i will let you know how it goes lol
I have to agree with you Allan, I had a 1200 BMW, and for three yrs I tried to kid myself it was a great bike. It many ways it was, it looked great and for two up riding across Europe on big roads and so forth it will excel. But, at my age (62), and with my short legs I found I could not do a u turn, I cldn't move it around uneven road surfaces without a hernia, and I was so tired everytime I got off it, and I don't care what any journalist says, it simply does not handle well on twisty roads. It got to the point that I would go to the garage to get it out, and then turn around again and go back into the house. I lost a lot of money when when I returned to my Tiger 800, but I haven't looked back. Regarding the crash, I don't know of any rider that hasn't done the same, it's part of biking. PS My next bike will be even smaller! th-cam.com/video/S_KA0EY3CUE/w-d-xo.html
I don't know how I ended up watching your channel but I absolutely love your videos. Honest and raw commentary. Loved the absolutely gorgeous Wales' scenery.
I am glad that your crash didn't injure you in any way. As you yourself said it takes literally a moment of lack of attention for the crash to happen.
Thanks from New Zealand.
Thanks, the crash could have been worse even the bike was ok.
i've started to stand on the pegs now on loose surfaces, it feels more like my dirt bikes days stance and gives me a little more confidence.
Well done for analysing what went wrong and uploading the video, we can all make mistakes but we learn from those mistakes those engine bars worked a treat and you was unhurt 👍
Engine bars are a must have item, they did their job 👍
Good on you for posting this refreshingly honest account - a helpful reminder that stuff can go sideways in an instant. I expect many of us have had similar feelings after a tumble, I know I have...Ride safe!
Its not a nice thing, but it happens to most people that ride a fair bit.
especially when you go off the beaten track and explore.
I will learn from it and move on a little more careful 😊
Riding 45 years... happened to me twice.. it is what it is... nice to see an honest tuber... for those that say it never happens to them...... good luck... its coming. I have a GSA.. and gravel is like riding on marbles.... on the large gravel stones.. You did well to minimise the drop. Glad to see you and the bike ok.
Gravel is bad, but the bigger stones are lethal... like you say, its like riding on marbles.
Scary stuff
A very good lesson for us all, thank you for showing it and I'm very happy you and the bike are OK.
Me too lol
better days going forward 😉
I live in South Wales and do these sort of roads regularly, even seeking them out. That feeling you got as you initially went over the gravel I have experienced many times and it is not nice with such a heavy bike. My advice when you come across debris in this situation is to stand up. If you’ve never done this before try it on quieter roads with good clean surfaces. By standing up the bike will be much more stable because your bum will not be in contact with the seat allowing it to articulate underneath you. The problem is, it’s not always easy to see from further back how deep the gravel is. It’s usually only the deeper stuff that causes problems. Learning how the bike moves underneath you in the shallower smaller patches of gravel while stood up by deliberately riding over them will give you much more awareness and confidence when a trickier patch might catch you out. When I find myself riding a road like this, I sometimes stand up for all or most of it just in case, especially if I’m not feeling so confident that day. On others when I’m feeling more with it I don’t stand because I feel my skills and reactions that day are able to cope.
Admittedly I don’t normally carry the same weight you were that day, but all the principals should be the same. Try riding these roads without the weight to gain some confidence first. The other thing I’d recommend is to ride onto a smaller patch of gravel preferably in a straight line and experiment with pinning the throttle open to create a rolling power slide. It sounds a bit drastic but the bike will move under you in a similar way to how it would in the panic situation, although it will be more controllable. This will give you a feel for how to move on the bike if you should find yourself caught out while sitting down. Look up Bret Tacs on TH-cam he has loads of good advice that can be applied to riding these sort of roads in the UK.
Good point on the standing up.
I don't think full road tyres helped me either, not saying nobblies would have stopped this but i think it could have?
I've learned from it, luckily it didn't cost me money for repairs or a day waiting for breakdown 👍
Thanks for the vid, you’ve gained a subscriber 😊 The most important question for me is, what was the Lake Vyrnwy Spa like?!
I was on that very road in March this year and very very nearly did the same thing. It was more luck than judgement that the bike stayed upright, so I have sympathy and don’t beat yourself up about it. It can, and often does happen to us all. On a lighter note, the area is stunning isn’t it. Loved our trip and will be back as soon as I can. Thanks for posting the video. It adds credibility to your channel. 👍👍
Thanks, that's why i posted it really.... i am happy to post the good stuff, its only fair i post my feck up lol
Not gonna lie i was shook up for a good hour afterward, as you see in the video banging my right pannier after didn't help! Definitely a day to forget.
It started and and ended well though 😁
We stopped at the cattle grid you had a moment on, and took some photos as the views are epic.
Nah, thats not a crash just a topple, love your honesty but don't make too much of this, no damage no one even scratched. Crack on, great video!
Which is why I realised long ago you don't need a bucket of lard to go touring, I've toured Europe Ireland and UK on a K75rt K75s Suzuki GT500 Jawa 350cc and a 1973 Triumph Tiger 750 twice to Ireland on that in the same year. Now I own a 310cc Scooter it's incredibly easy to get on and off has built in storage and with a top box plus room on the back seat I can easily pack that out to go away, it does 80mpg and top speed just over 90mph. I can honestly say the smaller bikes have been less stress to ride and can do anything most monster tour bikes can do. I took the K75RT on a ferry and it took three of us me and the crew to get it on the centre stand to tie it down! So yer I've had my road to Damascus moment and couldn't be happier.
True, ive seen people travel the world on a C90 it can be done.
I do love the GS its a bike that eats up the miles, but off road or even green laning its way too big. even on paved roads with loose stones i found out the hard way things can go sideways.
As the old saying goes... the bigger they are, the harder the fall 😉
I Would totally agree with the smaller engine and lighter weight bikes being a lot more fun and less stressful than the big monster's especially on single track country lane's. Out of all the bikes I've ever had from 1980 until I got too ill to ride the most fun in hail rain and Snow blizzards all year round was a Suzuki TS185 and a GSX250 I also highly recommend the old Kawasaki GPZ500,s.
The Big Bikes are brilliant for on Motorways and Dual carriageways but I wouldn't dream of riding one on the slippy B Roads.
Hat's off to anyone who does.
Hiya.
Interesting video.
Firstly, well done for posting it, and the assessment. Secondly, I did something very similar albeit on a test ride with a dealership loan bike.
Your explanation of the experience afterwards, playing it over and over, I went through the same thing.
Glad you weren't hurt.
G.
I was a bad day, but i was lucky neither the bike or me wasn't worse. Just a few scratches on the engine bars, so glad i had them fitted.
But my advice to anyone who crashes, no matter how small is to take a break and relax for a while.
My mind was racing after and i was so distracted it's unbelievable.
Well done for your honesty, one of my favourite roads, I rode it yesterday on my Honda 750x, wouldn’t like to take my Duke over there!it has deteriorated a bit recently, gravel etc
Wales has some great roads for bikers, if your lucky enough to get the weather too its perfect.
Just dropped on your video pal , well done for sharing, as you say it can happen to the best of us , glad you are ok and the bike got away with minimum damage, hope people can take something away from this , safe riding bud 👍🏻
Thanks, the things i would take from this is to ride slower on loose surfaces and if i do come off, take a break before setting off again 👍
Can you share your route in Wales Im very interested in where you were riding, it looks fantastic
I'm glad your OK pal, like you a seasoned tourer, I've done exactly the same thing. It's great to see an honest video, pal. Thanks for sharing. Safe riding pal. Also given you a sub 👍👍
Yea it happens unfortunately, its the chance you take on a heavy laden bike with road tyres on twisty hilly roads with loose surfaces 🤣 me and bike escaped unhurt, so i will add it to my ever lasting riding education 👍
Thanks for the Sub 😎
I rode that rode in the opposite direction from Dinas 10 days ago and the surface is very loose indeed and edge of the tarmac degraded.
Glad you weren't hurt and the bike not heavily damaged.
It may spark a discussion...perhaps the concentration was a factor. Personally I don't like intercom and prefer to focus 100% on the bike. Understood its a personal view and each to their own. You were chatting away to Jonathan as you led the way.
And an unusual time to choose take a hand off the handlebar for the visor which contributed as you know.
Good for you for posting. Hopefully others will learn from your experience which is cheaper.
Hope your confidence has returned.
They are great roads to ride.
Ride safe.
Best Wishes
Stuart
definitely a few lessons to be learned here, less speed and more concentration for a start.
It was a hot day and sweat was running down my face, i opened the visor to itch lol
Think i will wait in future.
It's focus. The gravel distracts, and your attention is then on it rather than the camber. Just one of those things. Good to be humble to share.
I nearly didn't share it, it is embarrassing sharing your mistakes.
But if i'm happy to share all the good stuff, i should share when its not so great too.
thankfully everything is ok 😊
Just goes to show ya we can all be caught off guard. Thanks for the vid
A wake up call for me, i was getting to relaxed while riding.
Its a reminder you need to have your wits about you 👍
A good honest video thanks for posting it at least you and the bike are 👍
I've chalked it up as experience.
Embarrassed but no harm done 😊
Hey, it happens to all of us! Well done for putting your 'off' on here. I know exactly what you mean about the adrenaline as, I had a smash two years ago. The bike was a wright off, all I had was a cut lip😊. Anyroad, I'll watch the rest of your vlog after my chippy tea😁👍.
Wifes on her way as i type with my chippy tea lol
poor lass has been working late
Momentary loss of concentration - happens to us all. I crossed the white centreline today - didn't mean to just didn't read a corner correctly. No harm done but it was a wake-up call. I'm Welsh and I have to say that gravel on our country lanes can be a big issue. I've got an RT and a road spill like yours would make a hell of a mess of it.
as long as we learn from our mistakes we become safer riders 👍
especially if the bike is ok.
Happened to us all mate, no shame whatsoever in admitting it. If I was with my mates they'd have been rolling around laughing at me as usual. Humour is a great healer. All part of the fun 👍😉👌
Oh Jonathon found it hilarious, he's gutted he didn't get it on film so he could take the mick.... although at a recent BBQ he still does 😁
Just found your channel, I did a similar think 3 weeks ago. Like you say can happen to anyone. Stay safe hope to see many more riding videos from you👍
yea just a bad day, hope to have many good ones going forward.
riding around 6 countries starting in about 6 week, so looking forward to that 😊
@@MotoTripTV I’m just at the stage myself, got the Chunnel over this morning and working myself and the misses over to Bled and back.
@@JaySalvoUK We are going over from Hull, through Holland and Germany to Czech, south to Austria and back through Germany to Belgium and France.... chunnel home 👌
Definitely time to think of going over to a mobility scooter 😁
Haha only with a hayabusa engine in it 🤣
At least you are okay mate it happens to the best of us, i was only on that road the other day i had a big of last year first in 43 years, but it was a big decision to carry on its took nearly 12 months, in my case I don't know what happened to this day but i live to tell the tale. So just do a reset and stay safe. 👍ho and I am glad you are okay.
Its one of them things you say to yourself will never happen.
When it does you feel venerable for a while, im ok now and enjoying the bike still... i'm just being more careful which is the lesson i suppose 😉
Great vid pal, well done for posting a little bit of education for all of us...
yeap crap happens when you least expect it.
just broke the last inch off the clutch lever, other than that all ok.
Sorry to yakel on but I was knocked off a bike in Shefield last year and to this day I keep going over and over and over what happened Just let it go these things do happen to the best of us so chill out you are just as good a rider as the day before trust me you are !!
Im ok now, it was just the few hours after the fall.... my mind racing, trying to figure out what i could have done different.
A good sleep and a few daily commutes and im ok 😊
Glad to see you and the bike ok
I did the very same thing during the week on a ride out with my hubby …only thing hurt was the pride..thankfully….there are two types of people in the world ones who have dropped their bikes and those who will drop their bikes… it’s not a matter of who ! ….but a matter of when … my lesson was learnt …glad to have learned it the way I did …with no real harm done ..
best lessons are cheap ones lol
glad neither of us ended up with a bike in the garage and a huge bill!
I sympathize, dropped my brand new hornet in a car park, trapped under it. It's on my channel, like you I posted it for all to see. It was a silly mistake. Glad you're ok and the bike.
Yea bikes ok, i've had to chalk it up as experience to be more careful in a similar situation 😊
i dropped my tiger 1200 3 times and it does knock your confidence. took me a while to gain it back. thankfully no damage to my bike or me apart from my pride. although you had a bad day at least you and the bike are all good. Ride safe
It did play on my mind for the rest of the day, couldnt think of much else to be honest. a good sleep and a few rides later all is good.
So glad the bike is ok though.
Hi, first of all, I'm glad you had no harm. Dent on your dignity isn't count. There is one thing that I would like to suggest to change the title on the screen. "The day we all need to remember" would be more adequate. You are right, it could happen with any of us, and yes we have to remember this every time when we hop on our bikes, whether for a coffee run, or around the country/continent/world... thanks for sharing and reminding us. Big thumbs up.
So true, the title could have been "A day to remember" easily.
learn from it and carry on 👍
I don’t think chatting to your mate helped. That was simply a lack of concentration. I’ve no doubt that if you saw a car driver on the phone you would be pissed off.
True. So many deciding factors... chatting, opening visor, not watching the road properly, going too fast in a narrow track etc etc
we all do this everyday, on this day my luck ran out.
Least i walk away a little embarrassed but ok 👍
Long as your fine, we all do it, make you a better rider
made me better at falling off lol
Glass half empty, or glass half full? Well it's hard to be positive when your pride and joy is laid in the road, and your knee pain is poised to kick in as soon as the adrenaline subsides. But.. if you really were riding too fast and if you were riding way beyond sensible limits for the conditions , you don't walk away with some scratches on the bike and a sore knee. The bike goes tumbling with bits flying off, followed closely by you doing the same. So don't beat yourself up too much. Because you don't ride like an idiot, you live to ride another day with more dents to your pride than the bike. And no serious injuries..... Until you tell the wife of course 😂
So true, i got the embarrassment and life lesson for free with no bill from a garage for repairs, i consider myself lucky 👍
Ill say this about the GS they crash well. What road is that mate its epic

Yes me again I live in North Wales and my plan is to visit every lake but this will be on a 650 or even less and I might even go the old route who knows Great vid fella sorry to intrude so much !
Don't be sorry, when people comment i know they are watching my efforts lol
There are lots of lakes and some great roads between them. 👍
It just simply happens to us all , I’ve dropped my GSA after 35 years , it just happens , your ok and the bike is ok full stop , look at Nottingham two weeks ago 5 am 3 dead just walking to work at 5am
So true, in the grand scheme of things its nothing.
apert from being embarrassed me and the bike are ok thankfully.
Same thing happened to me a few weeks back, broke a mirror with my left wrist which is still sore. Was looking at my GPS instead of the track. Ran off onto the mud on the side, next thing I knew I was on my arse in the mud. Crash bars saved the cylinder heads. Another lesson learnt, every day is a school day. Had a laugh with my mates, picked up the GS and away we went, minus one mirror. 🤔🤔
I broke the end of the clutch level off, which i just replaced for £82
Im lucky this lesson was cheaper than it could have been.
Thank god for engine bars 👍
@@MotoTripTV I took off the BMW hand guards and replaced them with barkbusters the day I got the triple black home from the dealer. That was all that saved the lever on mine. 82 pounds for one lever? that equates to about $156 here in Aus. I think the set of barkbusters was around $200. Money well spent. You just made my day mate, thanks
@@mickschreiber1995 Funny you should say that... guess what i did this weekend lol
Barbusters frames with storm handguards 😁👍
You have seen the spill I had when gunning my bike out of tyre shop on fresh rubber, and went down within 5m of the shop door. I'm also 40 year vet, I know full well about fresh rubber, just sometimes you forget stuff. No real harm done, so take it as a reminder.
Exactly that, a gentle reminder to not get complacent... scary but that's kinda the point lol
The bike is due in at Williams BMW for its service and MOT will get them to check over before my 2500 mile trip into Europe in 4 week!
I always think of any crap that hits me in life….including silly shit that my three youngsters do…are just character building moments in life. The main thing is that you are OK 👍👍😊
So true, just don't make an habit of it 😉
Good honest video with lessons to be learned. Maybe not constantly chatting to someone while riding difficult roads would be a good idea? Way too much of your focus is inevitably on the person behind you, rather than completely on the challenges ahead.
Very true!
Road positioning. Ride in the tracks not in the middle. Glad you were not injured.
That was the idea until i decided to not concentrate and make a balls of a simple task lol
Travelled that road last year but the opposite direction
Cwrt is , Court in English
thanks, sounds so obvious now lol.
some great roads in the area 👍
Happens, once off the road it would have been really difficult to recover, it would have been sheer luck or maybe Dougie Lampkin level skill to avoid coming off. Main thing is no serious damage or injury. The GS is pretty robust look at all those off road courses such as the BMW off road experience and how often those bikes are dropped and just keep going.
Yea mains thing is me and the bike are OK, just the world reminding me to be careful and stay focused.
Point well and truly taken!
Excellent video…. Honest and informative commentary…. A reminder that we all have off days.. and one incident can lead to another when our confidence is knocked…..
Yea, like smashing panniers on cattle grid fencing lol
could have been much worse 👍
what was the road you where on m8
Oswestry SY10 0NF, going away from Lake Vyrnwy signposted Dinas Mawddwy
How’s the knee?
Knees ok again now, was just bruised 👍
nothing worse, gravel and chippings, apart from horse or cow muck, diesel, potholes, we've got something to do when we get on the bike, glad your ok.
Trust me that wasn’t a crash when I was young I had a season ticket for St John ambulance only bone I never broke was my neck if you see my X-rays you’d have one hell of a laugh be safe and enjoy riding btw I just bought a bmwr1250gs ultimate edition it’s my 4th and my favourite 👍🏼🤕
Funnily enough i broke lots of bones as a kid, just on a pushbike though, trying to do stunts to impress my mates. oh they was impressed LOL
With offroad bikes ive come off plenty too, this was the first on the road though.
Hopefully the last!
Main thing is youre ok pal, a beer, a decent nights kip and then back on the horse 💪 life would be boring if it all went to plan😂
it would.
Yep back on the bike and still enjoying it.
one of them things i suppose and at least i didnt end up with a huge bill from BMW 👍
In 2019 i crashed my r1200rt hexhead up the a68 towards carter bar about a mile from the summet 60mph peice of loose luggage jammed my rear break ar lass was on the pillion she was knocked out cold
I got off lightly compared, that sounds pretty bad. has she forgiven you lol
@@MotoTripTV it wasnt my fault it was one of her garments under a cargo net that she hadnt secured properly also she forgot to fasten her helmet which appeared to have protected her then come off last minute i must have been divine intwrvention. I was fine i ended up across the road bike on its right hand side slid on her heed engine bars i was still on tje bike sideways
@@austinmatthews347 Wow, glad your both ok. 👍
Jeez that’s not a proper crash😂 anything you can walk away from doesn’t count in my book👍 anyways if you crash without a camera is it even a crash? Glad you are ok
Just a shame my mate didn't have his camera on, must have been a good view from behind lol
Its a lesson learned without a bill from BMW thankfully 😊
Cwrt is pronounced (more or less) coort. Pronounce the "r" . It means "court".
ahh something else i've learned in this video.... along with a rational fear of loose stones lol
Shit happens, bikes OK no one hurt , bit of damage to pride.
And a bit of feeling sorry for myself and the bike.
luck ran out, it's just a reminder of what happens when your not paying attention!
lesson learned 😉
@MotoTripTV it happens, I fell off mine, and I wasn't even moving.
Come to a complete stop at an angle, put my foot down, and couldn't feel a thing. Leg had gone numb,
Dropped sideways still sat on the bike.
@@johnsharp6618 a mate did that in front of me on his Ninja years ago. stopped at a red light and forgot to put a foot down...just fell over lol
From behind it look like he fainted on his bike!
Another GS 1250 rider who can’t handle anything more serious that flat tarmac. That surface is nothing. Try sending it at 40mph down a cross country disused farm track on stock tyres. I’ve done it and have plenty of videos on instagram to prove it. I ride a Tiger 900 Rally Pro.
You totally missed the point.
The point being mistakes happen, and can happen to anyone.
Anyone but you obviously, your amazing!
@@MotoTripTV clearly better than you.
Mate, I get it we all do, we’ve all done it, made an error and then go over and over it and then another mistake. Christ I jumped on both occasions! You live to learn 🫶🏼
anyone who's done it, knows the feeling.
No point being all macho about it, it sucks lol
