Hi Joe. I just placed a deposit on a RS Zest after doing my research, including watching several videos, including yours. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm in sailing the Zest!

My club bought a fleet of Zests as their new beginning trainer. My first trip out I was stunned. Such a brilliant boat - fast and easy to rig and get into the water, easy to right from capsize with nothing to bail, and speedy enough when the gusts hit. Thanks for the vid - I've never hit these speeds but I agree that the boat is a blast to sail.

This is awesome, please do more Dinghy sailing reviews! It's much more accessible for me in my area as I only have room for a topper style boat and have to travel 20-45 minutes to the the closest lakes.

We used these boats for scouts in the small boat sailing class, and it was very simple yet fun to use. My favorite part was probably capsizing and reviving

Love your videos Joe. If only i got such reliable winds! I'd never come inside. On you videos your audio always says knots yet your graphic says MPH - so did this boat go above 12 knots or MPH? I have yet to break the 11 knot mark in my Hobie Bravo which reminded me a lot of this boat - plastic pontoons zero maintenance and set up to go in seconds.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, unfortunately the GoPro won't do knots. I'm using a GPS watch as well - top speed this time was 13.17 knots. Very happy with that. Perfect conditions for it.

The Zest is certainly a better design than the Pico - more space for adults and less cluttered - It feels like a bigger boat without being to much bigger.

@Bernardo Hagen because you don't need centreboard to keep boat "tracking" like you do going upwind or beam reach. This also causes weather helm & boat to heel more.

    ********************************************************************************************************************************
Since I sail single-handed (which looks a bit like here: th-cam.com/video/B_oyrmoOCRs/w-d-xo.html ), I have to sail 3 pods at the same time loosely from the hand, which means that there is no hand free for an action cam.
[Since I sail single-handed (it looks a littlebit like this: th-cam.com/video/B_oyrmoOCRs/w-d-xo.html), I have to loosely hand 3 pods at the same time, which leaves no hand free for an 'action cam'.] I wouldn't take my normal camera on board, it's a) not waterproof and b) too good to sink. There is no guarantee that it won't capsize, unless you leave the sails off.
I think it's a great idea to have the sailing/trip data at the bottom of the screen. (Like a view into the cockpit of the Formula 1.) Especially the speed tracker is a nice accessory. Would go well with several videos of this kind. So far I only knew this video th-cam.com/video/ncLBfkaga7M/w-d-xo.html, in which the filmmaker had inserted a whole bunch of parameters. A combination of the two would be nifty.
I did read the short notes in the comments about how the data was generated for and in the video. But for someone who hasn't done such a thing themselves, a corresponding youtube tutorial would be more than helpful.
Personally, I am more in favor of sailing in the boat and not outboard.☺ However, if going overboard is to be expected, I plead for a fixed connection between skipper and the boat, as for example with the surfboard, so that the boat does not up sailing without the "leisure captain". One could also use a kind of ripcord like in the jet ski (PWC), so that the main halyard is released when the boat is left abruptly. After all, weather conditions are not always as good as in this video.
"Rob MacLachlan" criticizes a discrepancy between the mentioned knots (= usual nautical speed indication) and the display of the speed in MPH. A look at the following link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knot_(unit) would have shown him that it is the same.
