  • She's never been sailing before, but took to the jib sail pretty quickly! Beautiful dusk sailing on our lake. She's 5'10" and I'm 6'2"... maybe that'll help you picture yourself in one since RS has little photography or videos to demonstrate scale...

    That's a rather lovely lake! Thinking of getting a Zest for the children and me...Less tippy than my Enterprise!!

      Daniel Forde-Pogson Thank you, NJ has its beauty! It's very very stable when moving. We're very tall and I weigh 200lbs, whether it looks cramped is for you to judge, I don't think so. She insists on sitting on the deck, probably worried about getting smacked in the head still. The latest video probably shows the stability the best, we cruise around in 10mph winds and I sail in anything, as high as 30mph. Long term durability, tough to say, it's a year old model and I've had it 3 months. I broke a piece and am waiting for the part for a while too... If your kids are young could probably hold 3 people. With the jib sail they can become your first mates!

      @@robsinHL Just got my Zest. Only had it out twice so far, but absolutely love it! Can't wait to get it out there again!

      @@rickvezie7824 excellent, congratulations! It's so stable and easy to rig, lots of fun. I broke the collar that the boom connects to on the mast. It was a 20$ part probably, riveted the new one on last month and as good as new again. I think I might have done it myself by dropping it on the dock. Dont think it was a result of sailing.

    Hoofer Sailing Club in Madison just purchased a small fleet of these. I'm looking forward to sailing it. It looks like it has a reasonable boom height.

    • @robsinHL
      @robsinHL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very very reasonable height! Sailed a couple times this week with the nutty gusty weather and am very happy with the stability all around.

    How experienced were you though? You seem very capable. I was looking to learn more after I took lessons on a keel boat. I didn’t seem to master it well at all so I thought I would try this one. Thoughts?

    It looked like a nice time. Oddly quiet. But.... What was her overall experience? Did she like it? Will she want to do it again maybe a bit more daring? Or was she Meh🤷‍♂️?

    That actually looks pretty comfy with two grown ups. What's your total weight do you think? And what did you think of the boat?

    • @robsinHL
      @robsinHL  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shes about 5 ft 10 and I'm 6 ft 3, combined about 325 lbs. I sail it alone 95% of the time though. It's fun, very stable and very quick to rig which is nice when I have a couple hour window and want a quick session. It's a little slower than the sun fishes around here for comparison, and the sail is ugly. Everyone in the area knows the boat because of the colors and some confirm its ugly to me too.

    Do you also single hand the Zest with the jib? How much power/speed do you think the jib adds? So far I have only single handed my Zest, and I have not bought the jib yet, but I am thinking about it….

    • @robsinHL
      @robsinHL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there - def use it. Most of the time I’m one handed with it - the good woman rarely comes with me. It does add some power, can feel it pulling the front end along…
      plus it’s more fun.

    why is the jib cleated on the wrong side???

    • @steveburton5825
      @steveburton5825 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's got it set up as a self tacking jib... it's actually attached on both sides and the clew is held amidships. Yes, it could be marginally faster if he adjusted the sheet but as it was her first time sailing, I think he did the right thing. You can see in the end, she's controlling the sheets and perhaps not letting the upwind sheet out quite enough but give her a break, it's her first time!

    • @robsinHL
      @robsinHL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point --- I might add she's now crewing for an FJ fleet here, so she's caught up a bit.

      Congratulations Jamie!
      I'm just learning too. Rob's videos have been very helpful to me, as I wasn't able to find lessons in my area (southern Oregon). I've also watched a lot of the Sailaboattv videos on TH-cam. They're mostly dealing with Lasers, but still helpful information.
      I love my Zest. I admit that I don't have enough experience to know a good boat from a bad boat, but so far - I'm convinced Zest is 12 feet of sweet. Very forgiving and lots and lots of fun!
      Thanks for your videos Rob, please post more when you can.
