Walmart zippos are great, you’re not as attached to it, you can give them out as gifts and if you loose it, you can always get another one. It’s a zippo without a box. That’s it.
Yeh, but the fuel will still evaporate around where the lid closes on the body though, because that's a metal-to-metal seal, and that will never keep fuel vapour in! That area needs some sort of gasket too. I stopped using Zippos years ago because of the fuel-retention problem Zippos have always had, and moved to Imcos. Very little fuel evaporation with them because although things are still metal-to-metal, the tolerances are much smaller compared to what there is on Zippos. Zorro 'Zippo look-alikes' from China are also far superior to Zippos.
Fully agree with pretty much everything you wrote. I nolonger use these gaskets. Had tried them just for the sake of doing so. I still use and collect Zippos, though. Along with other vintage lighters. The Zorro lighters coming out of China are of very good quality, and I own a few in my collection and plan on getting more. They have a couple of heavy brass ones that are machined from a single piece of brass that incorporates a slot around the insert that has a replaceable o-ring that helps with fuel retention. Thank you very much for commenting!
I stumbled across the rubber gaskets on Aliexpress one day and just figured might as well try them out. They were really cheap through them. I have a few other Walmart blister pack Zippos in my collection as well. Some of the designs are pretty good.
Collected Zippos for years, just came across those gaskets & picked up a pack. I use a torch insert in my carry Zippos because I like them better for my cigars but still use the original inserts in my workshop. I'm anxious to see how these gaskets help.
Thats great! I'm hearing the rubber gaskets basically last indefinitely while the plastic ones start to shrink after some time. Where did you find your gasket? It seems to be working for you.
I purchased the ones I have through Aliexpress. I no longer use one in my daily carry anymore, though. I've switched back to just using the felt pad that comes with a Zippo. I do not have anything against these little rubber gaskets. I just decided that I prefer using just the felt pad.
Hmm, good idea with that rubber gasket. 🤔🙂 I can cut something similar out at home, just wondering if leakage is really an issue with Zippo's? I mean if they leak at the bottom the fuel has nowhere to go, right? 😊🙂
The fuel evaporates after a while. It doesn't really leak out of the case. Petrol lighters, like Zippos work off the fumes of the fluid. The idea with these rubber gaskets was to help with fuel evaporation. I went back to just using the felt pad that comes with the Zippo originally since I really didn't see much difference in evaporation. The only time fluid would actually leak from a Zippo is if it is overfilled with fluid. Some people use a small piece of a plastic sandwich bag to cover the bottom of the insert to help with evaporation.
@@zippolyonsden1623 Ok, thanks for getting back to me. 😊 It seems we can stuff the housing with all manner of absorbent material, as long as the wick gets a good padding aound it. (I have a Glow in the dark Ghost Compass Zippo.) 😃

The hinge is where it leaks from. Its always a good idea to store a zippo wrapped in a small plastic bag. This stops vapour evaporation. A zippo will normally last a few days without wrapping but if you wrap in a plastic bag it can last over a month.
Definitely correct, that they leak from the hinge as well as from the bottom. I use my Zippo throughout the day, every day. I just keep it in a leather pouch.
