Why did I buy this old rusty Zippo? Part Two: how it turned out.
I'm intrigued. How do you actually fill a vintage butane lighter? Does a modern butane nozzle fit into the fuel filler or does it have a disposable cartidge inside? I heard some vintage butane lighters have a disposable cartidge. Beautiful Ronson you got, by the way! I love it!
The butane I use comes with different adaptors for refueling different types of lighters. This particular Ronson can be filled with the regular nozzle. I use Scripto butane, which comes with five different adaptors in the cap that can be used. Thank you for commenting!
@@zippolyonsden1623 Thanks as well. I'm glad it can be refilled with modern butane cans. I'm considering including vintage butane pocket and table lighters in the collection. I was also thinking, butane-fueled would be more suitable for a table lighter since it doesn't evaporate.
@Jonathan_Bryan_Degamo both are great choices to add to one's collection. I own a couple of each. I've been thinking about getting a couple more non-zippo table lighters. A decent Ronson one would be cool.
$19 for a really good zippo? I don't know if you're lucky or they're just kind haha In my country a zippo in the same condition would be sold for over $100 :(
Thank you for commenting. The store I bought it from usually has Zippos at reasonable prices. It's a pawn shop, so they most likely barely paid anything for it themselves. This Zippo usually sells for around $100 or more as well here in the US. What country are you from, may I ask?
@@zippolyonsden1623 Ok I understand. Btw, I live in Indonesia, happy to watch zippo videos from this channel.
Thank you for watching my videos. It's very cool to find out where people are from who watch my channel. Indonesia looks like a beautiful area of our world to live. The landscape photos I see online are breathtaking. Lots of history as well!
@@zippolyonsden1623 Yes, you are right. Indonesia has many places that must be visited. Maybe if you have the opportunity to visit Indonesia, try Bali, Labuan Bajo or Raja Ampat. You won't regret it :)
thats actually a really nice zippo looking forward to seeing the collection
That's a steal!
Definitely couldn't pass it up for the price!
Dude I have this. And the lucky lighter with it. Original box. Lighter date is 1977
Very cool that you have one as well!
The box says "built to last." It will last forever as mine just will not light. I'm very disapointed with Zippo products. I used a Zippo over 50 years ago when i smoked cigarettes and stopped using it because after i filled it with fluid, it burned my leg...but it always lit, and i didn't have to fill it every 3 days. I bought the pipe lighter and it needed fluid every 3 days or it wouldn't light. I bought the Yellow flame butane version and that won't light at all! I have Bic lighters coming in this week and i know they will light. I also have an a butane insert from another company coming in. I'm really sorry i felt that i needed a special lighter for my pipe. Matches work well!
@archtopp1 fully understand your feelings on this. I don't use the butane inserts very often due mainly because of the tiny button, and I have clumsy fingers, lol. Yeah, I also know what you're saying about the fluid leaking out of a Zippo in your pocket and getting a chemical burn on your leg. Happened to me in my youth many years ago. I've been using a leather belt pouch to carry my Zippo since I was around 18, and I'm now 50. As for Bics, have you tried one of those newer style Bic lighters that Snoop, Willy, and Martha do ads for? I bought one to try and it has been working pretty good for my pipe. The regular Zippo pipe insert I use, I keep the wick really short compared to my other Zippo I carry when not at home. One question, though, about the Zippo butane inserts. Did you bleed them before refilling them? I've heard from other collectors that has been an issue with them. Thank you for commenting!!
I've been thnking of replacing my daily use zippo from the st benedict to a solid copper armor just to watch it patina and tarnish overtime. Not sure how i feel about the inlay though.
I felt the same way about the inlay as well. It does look good. I wish Zippo would've just made it a plain armor case.
I felt the same way about the inlay as well. It does look good. I wish Zippo would've just made it a plain armor case.
@@zippolyonsden1623 same if they ever release one without the inlay i'll definitely be making that purchase.
@@zippolyonsden1623 I ended up making this purchase lmao should be arriving in 3-5 days. I figured the fact that it's a limited-edition inlay adds nice unique touch to it and might actually look better as the patina develops. i must have rewatched this video 8 times before making up my mind lol thanks for the upload. just dropped a sub too keep it up!!!
@MonstersFlyinginTheSky thank you for subscribing!! Mine has tarnished a little bit already, just sitting in the box in the case I have it in. When you get yours, it'll be interesting to find out what year the insert is, along with whether the bottom stamp is right side up or not.
I have this same lighter but when I fill it with butane it still doesn’t work. It produces a spark but no flame. Any tips?
Sweet that you have the same lighter!! Possibly try adjusting the flame height. I was fortunate that this one worked well when I got it. Dependable Flame (a fellow lighter collector here on TH-cam) may have a video that could help you decipher what the problem may be. Possibly a clog somewhere? Where the butane would come out, there is what looks like a nut, turning that is how to adjust the butane flow. It may be turned down to low. Hope you can get yours working again.
@@zippolyonsden1623 Its ruined i think. When I try to refill it the butane starts to shoot out from the seams at the bottom of the lighter.
@@MonstersFlyinginTheSky very sorry to hear that.
Just switch the standard Zippo insert with the Zippo butane insert, and you won't have to worry about fuel evaporation👍
Thank you for the advice and for commenting. I don't use these gaskets anymore. Haven't for over a year now. Found them to be more of a pain than what they're worth, lol. I honestly don't like the butane inserts all that much, either. I use just a standard Zippo insert in my away from home Zippo and a regular pipe insert for my at home Zippo.
@zippolyonsden1623 I actually like a butane lighter insert, but I'm not a fan of Zippo's official butane insert. Why, because Zippo's official butane lighter insert doesn't have a window on it, which would allow you to see how much butane you have inside. The Vector Thunderbird butane lighter insert has a body made of clear polymer, so you can easily see how much fuel you have left inside. The one drawback to the Vector Thunderbird butane insert is that you have to slightly bend the metal tab inside the lid of your Zippo case to get it to fit the cam properly.
@ThomasConnolly I've been wondering how the Thunderbird inserts are. Fully agree about the Zippo butane ones and not being able to see how much fluid are in them. I also do not care for the small buttons on the official Zippo ones. I have clumsy thumbs that keep sliding off the little buttons, lol. I burnt myself a couple of times with the butane pipe insert 🤣.
I’m confused. The zippo site said 3 dots on each side was 1950s if it was model 2517191…..
There’s two spots. One says … … was 1960, but … 2517191 … was 1950-1957 Meh.
Zippo didn't start using dots on the bottom of their cases until late 1955. Late 1955, 1957, and 1958, all three have four dots on each side. Differences being 1955 also has pat pend on the right, 1957 only has the pat number on the left without a pat pend, and 1958 only has the pat number in the middle directly under the word Zippo. There's a really good website, glenzippo.co.uk that describes with pictures, all the differences in dating vintage Zippos. The chart on Zippo's site isn't really good for dating vintage Zippos, sadly.
@@zippolyonsden1623 Thanks! I used his site and dated it between 1956 and 1957, or possibly a 1960 with an old stock 1957-1958 insert. It has the humped spring and coated copper through-hole rivet.
@Zestypanda glad you're able to figure it out more. Yeah, Zippo had some stamps that, at a quick glance, look really similar yet have minor differences that point to the correct year of manufacture. The older the Zippo, the more one has to look at the details to determine the correct year. I own a 1942 that may actually be a 1941, but due to its age and the amount of wear it has, makes it hard to determine with certainty, so I just consider it a 1942.
Wow I didn’t expect to find a video of this one. This was the Zippo I used when I was a smoker. Went cold turkey and misplaced it several years ago and recently found it. I have several other way more expensive Zippos but this is the one I carry everyday
Glad to hear you were able to quit smoking! Congratulations! How has your zip guard Zippo been holding up with every day use? I use a plain brass armor as my every day carry.
@@zippolyonsden1623 it’s taken a beating but the guards are still in place and holding up just fine. When I was stationed in Germany I had a really cool Armor but TSA confiscated it when I was flying back home 😂!! It had a plate on the front with a face, one half of the face was a devil and the other half was an angel. Absolutely loved that thing haha!
Man, that sucks about the Zippo you had in Germany. Have you ever tried to see if you could find another one like it?
@@zippolyonsden1623 I’ve been hunting for it but keep getting sidetracked with nicer models haha!! If I do stumble on it on eBay I will definitely buy it. The TSA agents wanted me to fill out some paperwork so I can get it back when I returned to the country but I just wanted to go home. Whoever has that lighter now got a really good one 😂
Similar to what I commented on your WWII Black Crackle a few months back, this is another one of those iconic Zippos that a true collector should have in the mix. Darn good price too! Congrats!
Thank you. Yeah, I definitely couldn't believe the price when I saw it. Actually, I saw this one in the case before I saw the 1942 WWII Zippo that I posted a video on recently. Was a good Zippo hunting day.
Very nice
It’s for fixing the divot where the ball hits the green. Nice and the 2 markers are to mark your ball and clean it or ? Jfyi
Thank you for the information and for commenting. I've never played actual golf ⛳️ only disc golf and mini golf, lol. Part of why it took me so long to finally add a Greenskeeper to my collection.
Only reason why I want ever wanted to golf is to use this tool 😂 The extension tool is a divot repair tool, and as you said a cleat cleaner/ tightener. The ball markers are dime size so if you lose one, you can put a dime in there to replace it.
I never thought about why the ball markers were dime sized. I would use dimes instead in fear of losing the originals, lol. I also didn't think about the tool being used for divots 😂. I play disc golf. Thank you for commenting.
GOD Bless Alexis & her Mother.
Thank you very much.
A truly beautiful lighter. It is a very sad story but a great way to celebrate her life using her paintings. God bless
Thank you very much.
Wonderful! 😊 That chart you have is handy for collectors and the fact you have a Cummins diesel branded Zippo is cool. 😎
I printed the chart of of Zippo's web page. It definitely comes in handy when I make videos. This is actually my first Cummins Zippo. I had to look up the company to learn more about what they do.
Hmm, good idea with that rubber gasket. 🤔🙂 I can cut something similar out at home, just wondering if leakage is really an issue with Zippo's? I mean if they leak at the bottom the fuel has nowhere to go, right? 😊🙂
The fuel evaporates after a while. It doesn't really leak out of the case. Petrol lighters, like Zippos work off the fumes of the fluid. The idea with these rubber gaskets was to help with fuel evaporation. I went back to just using the felt pad that comes with the Zippo originally since I really didn't see much difference in evaporation. The only time fluid would actually leak from a Zippo is if it is overfilled with fluid. Some people use a small piece of a plastic sandwich bag to cover the bottom of the insert to help with evaporation.
@@zippolyonsden1623 Ok, thanks for getting back to me. 😊 It seems we can stuff the housing with all manner of absorbent material, as long as the wick gets a good padding aound it. (I have a Glow in the dark Ghost Compass Zippo.) 😃
I use regular cotton balls in my daily carry Zippo. Just make sure not to over pack the insert and have the wick run through the wadding in an "S" shape. They're not packed correctly in the factory. The wadding that comes with Zippos from the factory are rayon balls which is basically a synthetic cotton. The glow in the dark Zippos are really cool! I only own one glow in the dark one. The one where there is an alien ufo trying to beam up a cow, lol.
@@zippolyonsden1623 😊 Thankyou for replying, I've noticed my flint is getting short, like maybe 2mm deep so I wrestled a flint out of a Bic lighter but the wheel won't spin.. 😯 I'm thinkin' the flint is too long, putting too much pressure on the striking wheel. Maybe if I cut it in half it would go alright? It's about 6mm long..?
It may be too long. Maybe loosen the spring screw a little bit and see if that helps. I've never tried a Bic flint in my Zippo before. Zippo flints will work even when worn down to just a couple mm. I usually do not change mine until they do not spark anymore.
That’s a beautiful lighter
It definitely will hold a special place in my collection. I've been able to find out a lot about the soldier who originally owned it as well. Turns out he was from Wisconsin as well.

I have a spare authentic camp spring if u need it. I was saving it for mine but I never got one.
Oh, cool! May have to take you up on that. I'm waiting for the tool I need in order to rivet the spring in correctly. The one I currently have is too big. It's made for the flat and not the humped cam springs. Should be here by the end of the month.

I found an obituary for him. He was a military police sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, and later was a police officer. There are some notes in his hometown newspaper about letters he wrote home during the war. You can search for him in the Door County Library newspaper archive.
That is so cool!!! That is the same guy I had found as well!! Thank you for finding his actual obituary. For me, it's really cool to find out he was from Door County as well. My family stems from there. Next time I'm in Sturgeon Bay, I'll have to stop at their library and print out his obituary. He definitely saw a lot of action during WWII.
@@zippolyonsden1623 One of his letters from North Africa mentioned the Red Cross care packages they were getting from home with fruit, candy, and cigarettes. The whole letters aren't published in the newspaper, just little bits the parents must have told to the editor or a reporter. It sounds a lot like the stories in that Ernie Pyle book!
@Shorty43204 that sound really friggin' cool! I so need to look up his obituary.
That’s so cool !!! Love when there’s a hero behind the zippo
