  • In this video I go over the best edc zippo. What I use personally and what other users might need for the situations they are in. I go over everything from vintage zippos, armor zippos , vintage look zippo , 41 replica zippo , rubber gasket for inserts , single torch butane insert , double torch butane insert , zippo fluid gold plated insert , even some zorro inserts. Sandwich bag trick and much more. Let me know your edc in the comments. I left out the yellow flame zippo butane insert due to its lack of windproof reliability

I used to collect different Zips and change my EDC every day, then a buddy gifted me a cheap China knockoff that had a neat art piece on it. I liked the art so much, and the fact that it was the first lighter that I received from another person, that I put a soft flame butane Zippo insert in it and it now lives on my belt pouch as my everyday carry.

i've wanted to change my everyday carry zippo to something more "generic" because of its sentimental value (it's engraved and i got it for my graduation) so i searched some auction sites and bought a what i tought to be brass zippo on a local auction clearance sale. i was somewhat skeptical when i first got my hands on it since solid brass oxidizes and it lost some of its color on the most stressed parts. so i read the timestamp (VII-91), looked into the catalog, and it turns out it's actually a gold plated one. it also came with a handmade case and the best thing is, it was only 8 bucks and it had 3 flints under the felt pad. it's not in the best condition (especially the insert, it has lost most of the coating), but at least i won't feel bad using it)

I guess I'm a nostalgic type, but I very much like the fact that I can know exactly when the case/insert was made.
The easy dating system makes it possible to get an old Zippo for every important moment of your life. So I carry one that's built the month I got my drivers licence. Or meeting my wife. Or any of my kids being born. Etc.
I like 'my Zippos in brass so I have removed the coating on quite a few of them. I get a beat up coated lighter that has a meaningful for me date stamp, for cheap as can be, remove the paint in a bath of acetone and there it is - another EDC.
My first Zippo was in fact brushed chrome - for some reason this was the cheapest option back then and might also be today - which is weird, as chroming and brushing can not possibly be cheaper that just leaving it being brass as it was before chroming). I bought that one in France in 1997 and still have it), but these days I hardly ever carry anything but straight brass.

My very first zippo is a classic brushed chrome dated I 14, but for sentimental reasons it's been retired from regular service. Gramps had the same type years and years ago, though he wore the finish right down to the brass.
So for the winter months it's been a tumbled brass armor H 21 with the super thin finish accidentally polished off (oops), and it's original matching date insert. For the summer it's been a regular black crackle C 22 with a single torch. I am considering moving to a 41 or another armor, one that's more tarnish resistant.

I been experimenting with making my own fuel formulas and have successfully made some of my own fluids that outperform even my zippo fluid. Especially in old ass lighters with weak flint wheels or wicks not positioned in the best place to catch a spark.
All I do is add very small amounts of kerosene to pure hydro-treated naptha. Seriously 5% TOPS, I tend to stay in the 2.5-3% range for my own purposes. Less kerosene = more volatile, evaporates quicker, vaporlocks easier, but the trade off is that you can light pure naptha in below freezing weather without fail every time. But without kerosene, at room temperatures, the naptha is so volatile that you constantly get vapor lock leading to double strikes.
How much kerosene you add should really be dependent on the local environment. For summer time hot months 5% kerosene additive works best - 3-4% for regular weather, 2-3% if not less for some of the coldest places:
I wish I had known this years ago. I had rarely used my naptha to fill my zippos BECAUSE of the quick evaporation and vaporlock despite how cheap it was. Swore by zippo fuel over all else. Until one day I had a chance conversation with a man who had previously worked in the lighter fluid industry specifically helping companies formulate lighter fluids. Although he would not tell me any specific formulas he let loose that lighter fluid is just naptha/light petroleum distillate that has been mixed with secondary fuel additives such as kerosene or lamp oil to adjust the flash point optimally for spark ignition. And by god he was right! It’s the missing link! I’m seriously kicking myself for not knowing this sooner because it has brought back some of my “drawer” lighters I never carried due to them often requiring a double strike.
It also makes me question whether zippo is using kerosene or another oil as their additive because as soon as I add the kerosene and then shake the solution up it starts smelling IDENTICAL to my zippo fuel which always had a uniquely gassy smell to me.

Hi ZF! Can i have your humble oppinion regarding Barrett Smythe series ( precisely Taurus 2008)? I have just started diggin' through the Zippo world and You seem like a competent person to help me with this "issue"😊 Thank You in advance & all the best!!!

Barret smythe zippos are awesome. Every one is a cool design. He only ever made so many for them. And in the future I see them being a good investment for your collection. They are still affordable. Get them now. In 20 years I predict them
      To go up in value.

Can you buff and polish the rose gold? It’s really pretty and relatively inexpensive so if the finish is durable I just have to get one. But I do like to keep them shiny.

No that’s normal not that it’s more air tight it will make the flame bigger when u first fill it. Lite it a few times will go back down to normal. Or just trim your wick down to desired flame height if the flame u have is to big.

i personally never like/want an armoured zippo, mine has many dents in it and i like it, gives it character and some age and i like the vibe, its like a beater car, dont get discouraged if your favourite zippo gets a few lil dents (mine has a huge dent on the top of lid of when i durability tested mine and i love it), thats why we have lifetime warranty for if the time comes and we need a repair/replacement.

I EDC a 1989 produced vintage look with slashes in brushed brass. Beautiful but not tacky, and at no cost to functionality. Fits neatly in the watch pocket in jeans.
Carried trough Finnish defence forces service by me and my father before me. The hinge is a little loose but other than that and the patina its still like new. Used plenty of alternate fuels in it from moonshine to gasoline directly from the fuel tank of a Bandvagn 206, GI style.
Gotta keep it in an inner pocket during winter though. It wont light when its real cold.

Nice buds ! I’m edc a vintage look also right now. Cool that your using your sentimental one also. I’ve had mine in the outside pocket of my coat in minus 50 Celsius many times and always lites first strike. Maybe it’s your fluid or the way it’s packed. Might need to change your wick and clean your chimney. The soot causes it to clog up.

    Hey Fanatic, hello 😅
A bit of an offtopic question but I really don't know anybody that knows zippos the way you do 😅 So I just found a local guy near me who sells a Wild West Western Attire 1862 for practically no money. But the strange thing that I've noticed is that the writings on the insert are sideways not horizontal as it should be. Also they are a bit on top of each other like... like the machine that manufactured writings, was broken or something. What is the case here? I can send you an image somewhere, if that makes interest to you :)
    Thanks in advance.
    P.S. +1 sub, of course 😊
