#2 'Don't abuse the warranty.' Absolutely! I've used Zippos for 40 years, I've returned two Zippos under warranty in that time, and Zippo's customer service is the best you'll ever get. If you want it to stay that way, don't abuse the warranty.

I mean they do have an entire display in their museum for lighters that obviously abused the warranty… they tend to be abused by the ones sent in that were purposefully destroyed. Split one in half with an axe and send it in… might end up in that museum case and I’m not even joking.

Number 10, letting the fluid evaporate, is hardly an issue for me. I know how to craft my own wicks by pulling strands from cotton oil lamp wicks, weaving said cotton strands together into a smaller wick, and then sealing the tip by tying it together with thin copper wire, so it doesn't become undone. Been doing this since 2006 with great success, these self-made wicks have been very robust and reliable for me, even resisting charring pretty well. And, more importantly, I have access to near infinite supply, making the wick charring a non-issue to me.
This is the absolute strength of the classic oil Zippo, compared to other lighters: Its high degree of end user maintainability. These suckers really are built to last from father to son. Few other companies appreciate quality like this anymore. You buy a BIC, you use it until it goes dry and then you bin it. With Zippo, you just keep it going with spare parts, and it's gonna be with you decades later. While I appreciate the new butane inserts they recently introduced, there will regardless always be a place for the traditional oil insert as well, for its simple, rugged reliability.

My dad (died 1963) had a Storm King brass finish, when he died I put it in the lockbox. In high school I pulled it out & used it for years. Then I went to matches & Cricket disposable in a Wind Shield plastic case and returned the Storm King to the lockbox. In about 2005 I bought a used Zippo Classic (dated 2003) also with polished brass finish, bought used because I like the look of used. Last month we closed the lockbox and I refurbished the Storm King (flint had gummed up in the tube, needed new wick) and it works a treat. I'm Two-gun Pete now! If you want to keep your Zippo running like new get two things. A small hobby wire brush (crown type) and cotton swabs used for gun cleaning. Use the brush to clean the crud from the spark wheel and use the swab to clean the wick. It'll light like new every time. Crud on the spark wheel is the biggest culprit in unreliable lighting (weak, cool spark.)

So I actually just unintentionally came across this video, stayed cause I was mildly amused and I’m blown away I didn’t know about the repacking thing. I’ve been carrying a zippo for 20+ years now. I lost one a few years back that was my every day carry for 8 or so years. I was bummed but oh well. Bought a replacement after a few months of not having one and the damn thing sucked. I’d have to fill it up every single day with fluid. I quit carrying it around after a few months and forgot about it. Now fast forward to today. I was looking up what fluid I should use in this windproof March I used cause I assumed my fluid must have gone bad or something and I learn the repacking and i realize the reason the lighter I loved and lost worked so well is when I first got it my little cousin was messing with it and accidentally yanked the wick out so I had to take it all apart and repack it. Wild. Thanks for the video. I’ll stick around for a bit.

Another "don't" would be to not be annoying with the Zippo.
E.g. flicking the lid over and over in an otherwise quiet room full of people. If you really need to fidget around with it, you can still spin it between your fingers or something, just do it quietly.
Otherwise you're just a slightly fancier version of the guy who keeps clicking the ballpoint pen. Nobody likes that.
And I'm not saying don't do it at all. It's fun to play with and I do it all the time, but read the room a little.

I ve got my first zippo and i still haven't been able to light it... I ve tried everything i found on the internet...
    Put fuel
Turn the well the oposite direction to "i dont know" the filnt...
    Changed the flint...
    Saturate the cotton
Over saturate the cotton (with fluid ofc)
    Trim the wick
Put the wick outside the edge on the zippo.. Inside...just on the edge...
    Reasamble it....
Bought a new wick and flint and fluid original....
Put the wick in the s patern...
It only works for a couple of times after i put fluid on the wick as u said...
But after 2 3 times of working (like 5 minutes) it wont light again.....
The single thing that seems to be the problem in my opinion perhaps can be the fluid... Even though i used the zippo fluid....
I also mention that i leave in eu so perhaps the zippo brand fluid is not quite the good one....
But im simply out of options to try i might as well just leave it be in my room at this point cuz its unusable

Hey hector. If your zippo is getting heavy use. I change my cotton once a year. U do notice a difference with a fresh change. No matter cotton bacon or regular cotton. The fluid eats at it and it looses its ability to absorb. So either way u need to change cotton. Cotton bacon just happens to be a better performing cotton.
