From the Field -- Scale Competition Thoughts & Practice with the JHH A-7 Corsair II (The RC Geek)

  • If you've been following along on my social pages (@thercgeek), you've been seeing the work I've been doing to get my Jet Hangar Hobbies A-7 Corsair II EDF ready for the upcoming 40th annual US Scale Masters Championships in a couple weeks (usscalemasters.org). While at the field getting in some flight practice, I thought I'd use it as an opportunity to talk about the airplane and scale competition in general as competition scale is one of my passions that I do enjoy quite a bit. Competition scale flying is a whole other challenge that requires precision and realism and it's a good way to really push your scale flying to another level. It's going to be tough, but I'm hoping to carry even just a little of some of the magic from the 2016 USSM Championships when I won with my Mirage IIIRS ( • The RC Geek's JHH Mira... ). Big thanks to my friend Paul for helping capture video as my regular cameraman (Air-Jon) has been on vacation the last few weekends. :) He's not really done any RC air filming previously.

    I’ve always loved your content and that’s one sweet plane. However, that Jetfan unit could be balanced much better. There is a noticeable drone that resonates in the airframe when you run it up.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The JetFan come dynamically balanced. I probably just need to clock it differently on the motor shaft. Doesn’t really bother me that much thought truthfully.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve found that even the most balanced fans can still have a natural frequency that interacts with an airframe. That natural frequency resonance is much less noticeable on foam aircraft since the material absorbs it better.

      The double image is a result of the airplane having been repainted. It carried the markings and then was actually repainted on the cruise home if I remember right. So it’s now coming through since the paint has faded so badly.

  • @ModelAV8RChannel
    @ModelAV8RChannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good luck man! You are a great builder...that plane looks amazing! I had a question for you about scale contests - I notice the turn arounds seem "hurried" as in they don't seem to take up much airspace as if you are flying a tight pattern. I notice most scale contest pilots doing this. Is that because of limited airspace at the particular venues? It always seems like planes at airshows (full scale) like Jets and warbirds eat up a lot of sky. I've always felt like flying a bigger pattern with a model tends to get the timing closer to the real planes and look more scale. That may not be a possibility in a contest. Not being critical of you by the way...you are a good stick and I'm sure you are doing it exactly the way you intend to. Just always wondered about that. Your maneuvers like the roll seem to be right on point comparing it to video of a full scale A-7. I also notice a lot of scale pilots hurrying those to. A P-51 just doesn't look right rolling at the same rate a F-16 can, but you see stuff like that quite often in contest video. Thanks for any light you can shed on that!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! You know, some of that has to do with airspace, some of it has to do with pilots and their preference. In my case, being an EDF, I have a very limited amount of time to get the maneuvers in, so that is a big consideration. Thankfully, this airplane and setup are quite efficient, so I do have some extra time. Also, based on the size of the airplane, the further out it gets, the harder it is to see, so that is another consideration here. There should be no issues with space at the competition, so during the practice day on thursday, I'll definitely work to get my bearings, etc. (with a different airplane of course just in case! ;) ).

    Hi! How does the nose gear retract with the launch bar extended? Does it fold by itself and if so, how? Thanks!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The launch bar is attached to the strut and by the forward plunger (part that would push the bar downward on the full scale airplane). The plunger is made from concentric aluminum tubing with an elastic cord inside to spring it closed. When the gear retracts, the bar pivots along those two attachment points and that forward plunger extends and the bar pulls up into the scale retracted position. Hopefully that made sense as it’s kind of hard to explain.

    • @velcro62
      @velcro62 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thercgeek i got the gist of it but if you could show a video of the gear retracting, I'd greatly appreciate it! I'm trying to build a launch bar for rc jets so that one day they can be launched from a rc aircraft carrier.

      Pretty much, yeah and more, haha! It's like being part of an exclusive club. I don't dare tell them that I never read the books or even saw all the movies... lol

    Do the moves have a K-Factor to them?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each maneuver is scored to a maximum of 10 points and is weighted by Precision (5 pts), Placement (2.5 pts), and Realism (2.5 pts).

      Maneuver selection is extremely important and vary based on the airplane. It's always best to keep it simple. Competing with an EDF has additional considerations based on the flight time also. There are only two maneuvers in my routine that use full throttle, takeoff and the Immelmann. Everything else is partial throttle.

    If you still have this aircraft and if you have any desire to sell it let me know

      I do still have the airplane and while I appreciate the offer, it’s not for sale.

    Scale competition with a foamy?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! The pro am categories allow you to compete with models you haven’t built. Including foamies. It’s all in how well it’s flown and presented.

      So, no static judging?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, it’s an auto set amount of points for static by showing it’s a real airplane so it’s all weighted by the flying scores.
