Whenever they washed one, water always got into a bank of connectors just behind the cockpit and we had to pour freon into it to dry them out. There were fabric kick panels in the rudder wells that someone removed and lost. If we had to change the AFCS roll trim actuator, I always got a shorter person to do that, otherwise I'd have needed another elbow on my forearm. If anybody dropped something in the cockpit, the armor plating in the rudder wells had to be removed to retrieve it. That was always a fun job. In the engine area, there were two flat panels and two wraparound panels that had to be removed for certain jobs and those things were heavy. Far too heavy for aluminum and they didn't feel like steel. They may have been depleted uranium. I transitioned from the A-4F Skyhawk to the A-7E Corsair II. Our birds went to the Marines who didn't want anything to do with the A-7. I really miss the A-4.

The A-4 was designed based on simplicity and by a true genius- Ed Heinemann. I do agree that the A-7 should have been more service-friendly. It was based on the F-8 but wasn't designed for making evasive maneuvers if the bad guys jumped you. But the mid-70s music in the film was something else, I will say that.

Those armor panels around the the engine you mentioned, could they have been tungsten?

Active duty Nellis, DM, England and Myrtle Beach. I was at Nellis and DM '73 to '77. Vought tech rep for 12 years and 8 Navy cruises after that with A7-E. Lot's of fun. 20 minute box-swap fixed most gripes. Great plane to work on. Too bad Vought/LTV went bankrupt and didn't build another plane.

@@mikecarscallen4795 vought continued building major aircraft sub sections like the B1B bomber aft section and well into the 80's and the B2 stealth bomber 60 percent was built in by Vought. The C17 was wings and nacells were built by Vought. I retired in 2002 after 34 years of service
