    Last year my TSH W/REFLEX TO FT4 Result was 6.32 (abnormal range), today it was 3.48 (normal range). I have had hypothyroidism for awhile, but never took any prescription drugs for it. I started taking selenium last Fall. I wanted to heal it myself. By the way, my doctor never told me to take selenium. I had to become my own doctor. I'm so happy to be in the normal range now.

      I really, really hate how people make dumb statements like one or two Brazil nuts will give you " all the selenium you need" and regurgitute it like it's a fact. I eat tons of Brazil nuts and I'm STILL deficient in selenium. There's so many things that affect your selenium. Just because you eat something doesn't mean your body absorb it or depending on weather you're deficient in other needed vitamin and minerals to unitized selenium. I've recently discovered I've had a severe vitamin B1 deficiency for years which can negatively affect your body no matter how well you eat. If you have the MTHFR gene mutation like I do how you body process what you eat various greatly depending on your particular mutation. Bottom line when it comes to health there's no one size fits all. That kind of thinking is like going to an allopathic doctor and him writing you a prescription based on what everyone else with your symptoms needs, STUPID!

    Adequate selenium is also necessary for bone health including bone density. So, ostheoporosis could also be a sign of deficiency (but the more obvious deficiency there would be magnesium with calcium loss as a side effect of the body having to mine its bones for the magnesium).

    Speaking of compromised gut function affecting nutrient levels and absorption, I would love a video about the nutrient effects and other possible considerations one might encounter if they had to have their colon removed, and/or also an ileostomy. There aren't many videos out there on this topic, and I know your video would be extremely helpful for many!
    Thanks for taking my suggestion!

    • @kaleidoscope8743
      @kaleidoscope8743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the good news is that your gut absorbs nutrition through the villi of your small intestine. This is where the body creates a soupy slurry of your digestive enzymes and the food you ate. The colon is the large intestine. Under normal conditions, it's the colon's job to absorb the excess water and make the waste more solid ... i.e., poop.
      So no worries about the nutrition if colonoscopy is done.

    • @summersalix
      @summersalix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kaleidoscope8743 there is actually a huge risk for mineral/electrolyte imbalance/depletion due to electrolye and other mineral/water soluble vitamin loss due to having no colon to reabsorb fluids and thus having dehydration issues and mineral/vitamin loss.
      Many B vitamins and SCFA like butyrate are fermented in the gut by the microbiome, and the microbiome is essentially eliminated along w the colon... B12 deficiency, anemias, and vit d deficiency are potential issues as well.
      A healthy immune system depends on a good working colon and microbiome... A huge majority of immunity we have is thanks to that organ. When that's gone, it's gone and I'd also like Dr Berry's thoughts on prevention and making sure the immune system stays balanced
      In addition, while we know the benefits of having a balanced microbiome, we don't know much about the effects of having NO gut flora (yes, a small amount of flora is in the upper gi tract, but it's a very small amt and different types). As mentioned, it's important in fermenting some nutrients, immune function, mood, hormones, weight, disease prevention, and so many other things that have yet to be discovered.
      There are other possible concerns like hormone/endocrine issues, pelvic floor concerns, and even metabolism (due to the above mentioned and also 20% of thyroid hormone is converted in the colon, so that could impact someone whom already has thyroid issues), not to mention food choices due to typically needing less fiber (carnivore and keto are definitely helpful for most).
      Anyways, there are of key things the colon does, but those often get overlooked. It's more complicated than hydration and I thought Dr berry could dissect this from many angles. It's not a subject talked about and it would help many people.

    • @Vixinaful
      @Vixinaful ปีที่แล้ว

      The shitty part is people overeat to get the nutrients their bodies need but if the soils doesnt contain the nutrients, they can overeat to death and still be defeciant leading to surgeries that lead to more defeciencies bc of lack of absorption. Nasty cycle.

    Great video. Regarding the selenium in foods and the soil, my farm is in an area with low selenium in the soil. I must give my calves a shot of selenium within 24 hours of birth or they can die of "white muscle" disease. Only once have I actually seen a newborn down and unable to stand, but within three hours of giving him selenium needle he was up running. If it's not in the soil it won't be in your food no matter how much you eat. On another matter, in 1994 I had a PSA of 5.3 and was sent for a biopsy(50 years old). No cancer, but I read up on the subject and started to take 200mcg of selenium daily. Six months later my PSA was 2.7. I have not had to have a biopsy since, although my PSA did go to 5.88 once when I foolishly had a specialist tell me that in research studies selenium had been shown to give no benefit, and I believed him. Then, I ignored the so-called research and started taking selenium again and soon had the PSA below 5. I am 77 years old. I have worked as a research scientist in industry and university, and about research I have accepted the golden rule, "He who has the gold makes the rules".

For centuries people have been mining the soils and when they do fertilize they hardly ever add trace minerals. Selenium is indeed toxic and one account I read said that when Marco polo went through an area that had high selenium soils, some of his ponies died. Also in university I read of a study where researchers wanted to determine how much better natural cereals were than packaged ones. At the end of the study, the kids eating the packaged cereals fared better. It turns out the study was carried out in a region with low selenium content in the soils and the wax paper used in the packaging of the cereals contained enough selenium that the kids eating it got a valuable supplement.

      You may want to cut back a little - maybe twice a week, or at least keep monitoring. Individual response to dosage can vary, and maybe you need it daily at least for a while, but studies have linked selenium supplements to overdose symptoms, harming the brain and the prostate (not that your name matches the profile to have the latter).

    I have 3 Brazil nuts on days I eat...currently fasting alternate day. For those that don't know, it's also possible to get selenium poisoning, which I'm kinda surprised Ken didn't mention. One common way is over consumption of Brazil nuts. The 3 I have is pretty much the max amount recommended, but it really depends on the crop they came from, as to the actual selenium concentration. In other words, you might get away with more than a few a day, but the risk is obviously not worth it.

    Dr. Berg: Can you please make a video on the importance of using a Full Thyroid Panel test in diagnosing thyroid patients, as opposed to a TSH only test?
    I went 25 years without a Full Thyroid Panel test, because my doctors felt the TSH test and T4 were adequate to measure and treat thyroid function, in spite of the fact it did little to improve my symptoms.
    Recently, I went to a naturopathic doctor who ran a Full Thyroid Panel test, including TSH, free T3, free T4, auto antibodies and Reverse T3, and we discovered I have a severe Reverse T3 problem. Instead of the T4 converting to active T3 as it should, it was reverting to almost all Reverse T3.
    It's no wonder I still had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, which were getting increasingly worse over the last two decades. If you would be kind enough to do a video on this to spread awareness, I would very much appreciate it, and so would the thousands of hypothyroid sufferers who are receiving inadequate testing and treatment, and being treated like hypochondriacs.

      humans are genetically designed to be PLANT based not meat based. meat is an acid food, so ingesting a lot of it constantly will cause the body to go into acidosis; the baseplate of all the major diseases. read the Starch Solution book, and go plant based, just make sure your food intake is 50% veg fruit intake vs the starch component. your stomach issues will vanish.
