Selenium is a trace mineral. It’s only needed in small amounts. And even though selenium is abundantly found in our environment, deficiencies are a problem these days. It may be that our soil contains less selenium than it used to due to factory farming practices. But it’s also because our Western diet is highly processed and lacks many essential nutrients.
Symptoms of selenium deficiency are often related to the functions it plays. For example, hair loss is a symptom of selenium deficiency. And it’s also a symptom of thyroid disease. Other symptoms include:
Fatigue
Depression
Brain fog
Muscle weakness
Frequent illness/infections
Selenium deficiencies are also associated with serious degenerative diseases. And in many cases, evidence points to a loss of antioxidant activity.
For example, selenium-containing antioxidant enzymes prevent the oxidation of fats in your body, which helps prevent inflammation and the build-up of plaques in your arteries. Thus, evidence suggests a selenium deficiency could lead to heart disease.
Other diseases associated with a selenium deficiency include:
Congestive cardiomyopathy (e.g., Keshan disease)
Cancer (e.g., prostate, liver, and breast)
Thyroid disease
Neurological disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease)
Mood disorders
Bone and joint disorders (e.g., Keshin-beck disease)
Infertility
Inflammatory bowel diseases

I add azomite to my garden soils. It has selenium, chromium, and many other essential minerals in it.
Thank you for this tidbit❤️🌺
Thank you doctor for saving my life God bless i have thyroid problems and my hair nails skin so dry appreciate
Selenium is also necessary for the conversion of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) into its more active counterpart triiodothyronine (T3), and as such a deficiency can cause symptoms of hypothyroidism, including extreme fatigue, mental slowing, goiter, cretinism, and recurrent miscarriage👍
I had hyperthyroid and selenium helped me too big time. This is not for hypo only. The reason of these thyroid problems is because of epstein barr virus. coconut oil is a big help.
I feel you deserve to be WAY bigger on social media, awesome stuff

Great video Dr O. How much daily do you suggest to be healthy?
Here I go taking up 200 x 3 per day, seems to work for me for focus and zoned in
Selenium and iodine work together. See videos by Dr. Jorge Flechas.
Wow so selenium is very important
Great information... I've been trying to enlighten a friend about this nutrient since she has many of the symptoms. Frustrated!! How can I get through to friends who think the doctor would have told them if it was important? Thanks!
Good luck! Most people don’t know, or won’t admit, that the AMA regulates MD education and the AMA was created by the pharmaceutical industry. They aren’t taught to fully understand the intricacies of nutrition. They were taught to treat symptoms with medicine. Ken Berry’s books or videos might help understand.
@@amykeanewright Yes... Especially if their grandfather was a doctor long ago...😣 Misplaced faith in our medical system is the biggest epidemic we face!
@@KathysTube Agreed.... and I don’t want to minimize the importance of physicians in treating severe injuries or understanding severe infection or disease, but shouldn’t be your only resource for health maintenance and/or emerging symptoms.
@@amykeanewright Yes indeed.... doctors do save lives but... Chronic conditions are usually treated with dangerous drugs that don't fix the problem and often create new ones that are treated with more drugs.
I started eating one Brazil nut every day or two
Is 200 mcg enough when you have cancer or should you take more?
I believe u can go as high as u wont on any suplement in that situacion
I am a 74 year old male who eats two Brazil nuts daily for the sake of selenium. Is that optimum?
This guy is like ' listen to me or else ;' lol
