  • Find out what had me quoting 80's hair band "Whitesnake" at this budget border hotel in the town of Macará on the Ecuador Peru border! Hotel aside, this may be the easiest Ecuador/Peru border crossing.

      Hi Allen. It's so lovely to hear from you. There are some great budget deal hotels out there. For us travelling is a great way to spend our Leader Creek bucks 😉. We hope to see you at LCF again this summer and we hope you're keeping well. Happy New Year Allen 🎉🎊.

    One concern I would have is who the neighbours would be at that price point. I would worry about sketchy residents. (I once ended up in a crack motel in St Petersburg Florida - one of the worst nights of my life).
    You mentioned researching hotels - if they aren't on the booking sites, where do you get your info?

    • @ACoupleofDrifters

      Indeed, I [Jerry] worry about uncouth and/or boisterous neighbors at hotels. We've had some doozies in the USA as well - a lot of flop house-type hotels and motels over the years. Having said that, they all haven't been bad.
      Like we say in the intro, _many_ of the hotels we stay at aren't on booking sites. Some of them are, like the one we're in at the moment. We researched a few booking sites which featured this hotel, browsed photos and reviews, noted the online rate for the particular type of room we wanted and then walked in off the street and were quoted a lower rate.
      We also use Google Maps to research hotels by hovering over the map, clicking on the pink hotel icon and browsing photos [often from the hotel _and_ guests] and guest reviews. Sometimes a hotel will link to its website [if it has one] in the google maps info section. The photos we find in the info section are given rough timeframes as to when they were added - a week ago, two months-ago, 2018, etc. These timestamps, along with the photos, are invaluable information. With google maps we can often take a street view of the hotel, with a month and year timestamp on those images. This gives us a sort of glimpse of the neighborhood and what kind of shape the outside of the hotel may be in. Still, a crumbling hotel and/or a dodgy neighborhood may not deter us!
      We take some online reviews with a grain of salt - they are sometimes added to plump-up a hotel by owners/friends of the owners or used by competitors to smear a particular hotel - these reviews are often very easy for us to spot, The more genuine ones can be just as easy to spot and are filled with tidbits of helpful information which we use to decide whether or not to pursue a hotel on the ground.

    What do you do with your Alaska gear when you travel to a different climate?

    • @ACoupleofDrifters
      @ACoupleofDrifters  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We're very lucky in that we get to keep most of our Alaska gear up in Naknek and we're also able to keep the rest of our gear at our long-term house sit in New Mexico.

    Well, Hello You Two, This little room reminds me of some I stayed in the interior of panama. Very small and only cold water. But, I still miss them. Thank you both. Take good care.
