  • Trujillo has a wonderful Peruvian food tradition on Mondays - that means we had to partake in this ourselves! We started off the week in Trujillo with a rather rich and hearty Peruvian food called shambar... and getting a case of the Mondays will never be the same for us again!
    We simply loved shambar in Trujillo even though we found this particular food in Peru to be an unlikely local favorite. Find out exactly why we think this delicious Peruvian food seems a bit out of place in a hot, dry place like Trujillo. This may seem like an unusual Peruvian food to us, but we found shambar in Trujillo to be absolutely delicious nonetheless.
    Also, this video features a brief tour around Trujillo, Peru before we get a big bowl of shambar on Monday morning. After eating this local food in Peru we show the remains of Trujillo's old city walls later on in the video.

      Hello Marthe. Shambar is absolutely delicious and you're right it is very nutritious. We'll hopefully be back in Trujillo soon. We'll try to line our stay up to encompass a Monday and more shambar! Thanks for enjoying Marthe 🤗🤗.

    This does look delicious. Good on you for searching out the best. As a culinary anthropologist, I am so looking forward to this food culture. We are so excited to be in Peru next month and film it for our channel. Machu Picchu is #1 on my bucket list. We are a father and son who travel the World to plant trees, clean beaches and teach people about culture, history, and natural wonders. Glad to find your stuff and hope you might like ours too. - Bear

      Hopefully you'll love Peru as much as we did. Peruvian cuisine in particular really surprised us with its variety. Prior to arriving in Peru we really knew nothing about it aside from ceviche but we quickly learned of so many other dishes during our travels. Enjoy your travels!

    Thanks so much for continuing to share the food and cultural highlights from your travels. We really enjoy them! BTW, we are in Mazatlan and tomorrow we are in search of some local langostinas so we're gonna go check out Las Changueras and we heard it's the season for lobster! We're going to try a different local restaurant to cook up what we find than you visited...we'll see how that goes! It's so exciting that after all our years of research and watching videos, here we are, traveling around central Mexico checking it out for ourselves!

      Hello Blue Butterfly Travels. We're excited to hear that you'll be paying a visit to Las Changueras tomorrow. Keep us posted on the lobster search and which restaurant you end up going to. We're so happy for yous that you're living your dreams. It's fun watching videos and doing research, but nothing beats actually being there (wherever there may be), exploring and having your own adventures. Keep on adventuring... 🤗🤗.

      It really was surprising to find such a hearty winter-warming dish be so popular in such a tropical climate! It would be perfect for yous right now, yeesh those are some brutally cold temperatures.
      Right now we're in Ecuador. We've been legging it through here over the last couple of weeks (it's pricier than Peru, hence our cracking pace through Ecuador). We crossed into Ecuador as I was only stamped for 45 days upon entering Peru on Dec. 5th. We thought we would have been heading to Bolivia by now but that's not to be on this trip. Hence we headed north to Ecuador in order for me to not overstay my 45 days in Peru.
      We are currently heading south back to Peru. Once there we will focus on the northern part of the country - right now it is less volatile than the south and there is plenty that we want to see up north in Peru. We'll be returning to Ecuador to fly out of Quito late March. We're hoping to make it as far south as Nazca, Peru but we'll see how the roadblocks are. We're just dying to get back to Peru, we really do love it there.
      Stay warm. Not too long now 'til you'll be packing up and heading south! 🥰🤗🥰🤗

      @@ACoupleofDrifters wow - you guys really live the explorer life - and I'm surprised nobody on youtube talks about Peru given what you saw and what you share about this country. I think everyone hypes up Mexico and Ecuador, and they are becoming pricier and pricier... Enjoy your stay in Ecuador 🥰😍🤗

      There are definitely a few expat/traveller enclaves in Peru. We're loving Ecuador, it is very beautiful and very green here... at least the route we've taken through it. We can't believe that when we headed out in early December we had planned on visiting 3 countries in 3 and a half months! Even though we're no longer visiting Bolivia on this trip we're feeling like there just isn't enough time for Peru and Ecuador. We definitely like slow travel 😉. Hopefully we'll be back in Mexico this year. Mind you knowing us who knows where we'll end up exploring later in the year. 🥰🤗🥰🤗

      The shambar was delicious! Yes, that was glass covering old bits of the city walls and foundations. Sadly, the view below is a bit hazy due to deep scratches on the surface of the glass and condensation on the underside of it.

    Yes, Shambar is an iconic and delicious chowder from Trujillo served on Mondays only. Another typical attraction of Trujillo is it Spring Festival with competitions of a typical dance from the coast of Peru called Marinera. As a matter of fact Peruvians come from all corners of the world to compete in this beautiful and elegant dance where a man tries to conquer the heart of a woman. It is a very passionate dance. This an example of this young couple of champions.

      Hello Adolfo. We will be back in Trujillo soon and hopefully we will line our visit up to encompass a Monday, so that we can have shambar again.
      Thank you for the Marinera link. I (Fiona) had really hoped to see the Marinera dance whilst we were in Trujillo. Our guide book had said that there were performances on the Plaza de Armas on Saturday evenings, alas there were none during our visit. I was compelled to to a little research on the dance and I am amazed at the dedication and the lengths the dancers (especially the ladies) go to for their craft! We would love to attend Trujillo's Spring Festival, or the Concurso Nacional de Marinera (National Marinera Contest) held in January - maybe some day.
      Thanks a million Adolfo for your comment.

      @@ACoupleofDrifters You're welcome. If you made a video about Shambar is because you want to know more about the people of Trujillo and Marinera is typical dance that runs deep in the veins of all trujillanos. The dance demands being in good physical shape, passion and a dedication that generally starts at an early age.

      Hello Adolfo. Thank you for the links, they are very helpful in sharing with viewers what the Marinera dance is like. Fingers crossed that next time we are in Trujillo we may get to see a live performance.
      We do have a question for you about shambar. Do you know why it is only served on Mondays?

    • @adolfobriceno1635
      @adolfobriceno1635 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ACoupleofDrifters Excellent question. It is the only dish that I know of that is served on a specific day of the week. They say that ladies came to Trujillo to sell their produce on Sunday and on Monday before going back to their farms they would make Shambar with the leftovers. Like a lot of dishes, it has a humble origin.
      If you are still in the north coast of Peru see if you can try Arroz con Pato, a typical dish from Trujillo and Chiclayo. This one can be served any day of the week…….LOL. Fiona, your British accent gave the liberty to banter a bit…… 😂

    • @ACoupleofDrifters
      @ACoupleofDrifters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Adolfo. Thank you very much for answering our question.
      We are currently in Ecuador but will be back in Peru in the next couple of days. We are very excited to return there as we very much fell in love with Peru. We plan on spending hopefully around a month in the north of the country when we return. In all honesty we could happily spend that month in Trujillo alone! However we plan on visiting the archaeological site Kuélap, so we may well find ourselves in Chiclayo to get to Cajamarca, and thus on to Chachapoyas (via Celendín). We will definitely try arroz con pato if we get the chance, thank you for the recommendation.
      I'm from Dublin, Ireland 😉, but we also love a bit o' banter. Actually we (us Irish) can "talk the hind legs off a donkey" (an Irish saying for... we love to talk). Thank you so much Adolfo for enjoying our video 🤗🤗 and for sharing the beautiful Marinera dance with us, and for clearing up the mystery of why shambar is served on Monday only.

    Trujillo looks nice and shambar looks delicious (but I will pass on the pig skin). I like your idea of randomity checking out restaurants on google. I have huge FOMO - always worried about the place I am missing one block over. Your strategy is a good way to at least have a sense of what is available in the vicinity. Enjoy!

    • @ACoupleofDrifters
      @ACoupleofDrifters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Our google strategy is improving quite nicely. Fiona is doing a great job of partaking in my slight obsession with searching up hotels, sights, sites, attractions, pubs and restaurants. Her help has brought our prowess up a notch! 🤣😂 Sometimes she accidently picks a restaurant which happens to be miles away from where we are staying, so she is working on how to scale/gauge distances. Having said that, we'll still venture out a bit for some lovely grub. FOMO is real - embrace it!
