Simply cant get enough of that generation of evo.. Quite high tech for the time, but all geared toward performance. I love that it ended up with AYC and a tape player lol. I think it's completely wrong to call what's happening an 'electric car revolution', as it can only be a revolution if it comes from ordinary people rather than elites. Moving to electric is only benefiting those who already live in the castle
Loving this resto although as much as I'd try and keep the engine bay as stock "looking" as possible I definetly think it would be nice if it had abit more power personally I think I'd stroke it to a 2.1.
Try POR 15 diluted and doesn't chip and looks satin. Need to water or bead blast so nice and fine finish. For rusty bolts etc try Bilthamber deox C or Gel. Don't lacquer underside just colour as will look to blingy.
I would not put 2k over that rubber undercoat as it won’t stick properly and will crack easily when flexing or chipping. You should have gone with tintable gravitex which you can mix with the body colour. Epoxy primer , key the surface then add seam sealer and the use gravitex or raptor liner
I second the raptor liner I've just done my type r shell it's like concrete awsome stuff although you do have to be extremely careful with it if you don't prep it perfectly its horendous stuff.
Good luck with some parts, a lot of these types of cars have parts that can be a essentially impossible to "make at home", especially any seals because they are not normally a constant cross section unlike lots of classic Jaguars, Morris, etc. I am having this exact problem with Fiat Uno parts (for Turbo i.e. projects). Blue or green Impreza's on gold wheels are the bollocks! I'd love a green estate one!
I like factory look, so satin for factory black would be my pic too. I would try sourcing parts not eaten by rust where ever you can...shinny black looks like a pig with lipstick. Get piston skirts re coated, all bolts zinc coated, wet blast alloy and then clear coat to protect it. Lot of 2 door trim parts no longer available. Nice work

I thought in an earlier episode you had mentioned that you didn't like the rubberised undercoating because when it gets punctured, the moisture gathers in between. Did I misunderstand that?
Great work guys. I'm in the process of preserving my UK Classic (see profile pick). Owned it since 2003 and I probably did the first pass on re-underseal (waxoil product) of the arches (with struts out) back in 2008/9. This was topped off with Silver smoothrite. I then gave it a bit of a refresh a year or so ago. My MOT man (also a Subaru fanatic) pointed out this year that the underseal had flaked off on the outside edge of the rear strut tower. So at the moment the strut it back out and I'm mid preservation. All is solid but Fertan, Zinc primed and seam sealed so far and aim to zinc it again once seam seal dried, ditrinol seal and ditrinol underseal. But is there a better colour top coat material to use these days other than silver smoothrite or a Royal Silver rattle can. Bearing in mind this is in my garage with with no compressor for painting. Cheers
Hi mate, seeing as its the underside i would suggest getting a decent brush ( ask a decorator friend if poss) and get yourself a can of normal 2k automotive paint in a colour you're happy with. This will brush on fine with an acceptable finish for the undersides. The aim here is longevity over looks for the most part but using a high quality brush you'll be surprised how good the final product will look. Source : auto painter for 14 years, industrial painter for 5 Cheers
@@mattwindsor2472 thankyou. I did it with a colour matched rattle can plus laqueur in the end. I may try a brush on the other side. Bonus uscyou get alot more paint for your money in a tin than you do in a rattle can.
@@Scott555ish Absolutely true and no overspray to worry about! Just keep in mind to get a decent solvent safe brush and you'll be laughing! if you do the other side and get decent results (which i'm sure you will) You can always keep the remaining paint for touch ups etc down the road! Just one word of caution, don't be tempted to go over the side you've already used an aerosol, Aerosols as a rule aren't to be painted over with 2k, this is due to the solvents in the paint eating into the aerosol which will cause crazing/pickling which is zero fun to remedy. (you have to remove and start from scratch IMO) That said having spent the time and effort on your car, i'd say its not going to see much road salt etc so what you have done should last a very long time! Cheers
Jeeeeeezus that STi V6 Limited is sooo good looking. I would give up my '04 and my wife's '11 hatch (and then some) for that car. The only thing I don't really care for is the wheels. They don't look stock to me, but after doing a quick google it seems they probably are. I'd rather see it sitting on the '04 BBS goldies or maybe even the '98 2.5 RS goldies. But yeah. Damn. Edit: also, agreed - that gloss black powder coat on the suspension parts is gross. It would probably be advantageous for repelling contaminants, but it's definitely fugly and making all the pitting underneath even more obvious.

No offence but all those powder coated bits look terrible. Would you be interested in getting me to source some nice rust free pieces from here in Australia. None of our cars rust at all. Like you can decrease and pressure wash 90% of the stuff and it comes up brand new. Most parts can be easily sourced from Subaru Forester but some of the other stuff is harder to get. Let me know!
The 4G63 is not a bad engine. When you compare it to its closest competitor - the 3SGTE from Toyota - the 4G63 does not hold up. Not in terms of reliability, power output potential or manufacturing life (3SGTE lasted 21 years with only 5 major revisions). Admittedly, Honda engines are surpassing both nowadays.
