I like that this movie is less about teenage pregnancy and more about teens dealing with adult situations and realizing "Oh wait, I'm not as mature as I thought and I can't really handle this situation." That is such a canon event in teenagehood and this movie did it perfectly
It’s my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE coming of age movie for that reason, the most universal teenage experience is “I’m not as mature as I thought I was, and I’m in over my head” and I’ve NEVER seen a coming of age movie do that as well as Juno did it. I 🩷 this movie and it ALWAYS makes me cry
It's that and so much more there's a plethora of characters both young and old trying to figure out who they are and what they want and realizing that what they have isn't necessarily it
Its so annoying when people say that the child went after the older person first. Like idc if a 16 year old was begging a 30 year old to please give them a chance and date them, the 30 yo would still be a problem for agreeing
I was telling off a person on Twitter (X) years ago until I finally said "You're the one with control of your own pants zipper." That finally made them understand. They kept going well what if she...? Well what if she does this and that? No, sir you are older, you have ALL the power to say no, walk away, block them, explain to them why it's wrong, etc.

If we go to bars I'm the one making sure people eat and drink water, watching all the belongings and drinks so they aren't tampered with, etc. Telling off people for filming my friends drunk. Standing in between and telling off people who SA my friends, etc. I was at a music festival with my friends when a drunk guy tried to pee near us before he ended up smacking my friend's butt. I'm 5'4" and this man was taller than me but I went right in the middle of them and was ready to knock him the hell out if I needed to. I've taken Jiu-Jitsu but I definitely make sure I always have my safety devices as backup. Always go for the 3N's Neck, Nuts, and last Nose. Nose is last because it can be fatal if you do it wrong. You want to immobilize 1st and foremost. The neck and nuts are the best option. Neck is number one because they will instinctually grab for their neck/ throat when you hit it. Nuts are 2nd because while it is effective they could block you with their legs if they see your kick coming in advance. I'm nice and quiet but don't freaking cross my friends and me because I will be in your face ready to strike. I've had a few moments where my friends went dead silent and they just went whoa "who the heck was that" referring to me lol I'm glad you've gotten to a place where you realized how much of a creep that person was so you can more effectively defend yourself against those kinds of creeps. I've had the misfortune of being a target for creeps as well, stay safe and alert. Especially now! 🫂

the juno soundtrack was heavily inspired by elliott page's own taste in music as a teenager! the director wanted to know what the teens were listening to, and ironically this movie ended up influencing indie music even more. in a way, we have Elliott to thank for that era of moldy peaches - esque music.
I love and listen to the soundtrack all the time, and it music I don’t even really listen to, some of the songs are actually going on my wedding playlist 😅
Also the fact Jennifer Garner willingly took a MASSIVE paycut, so they could have the budget needed to make the movie. Like she knew what this movie was gonna be and i love that.
Not to trauma dump but I saw this as a pre-teen, and when my step dad started acting the same when I was an older teen I heard the alarm bells and remembered JUNO and told my mom!!! This movie is a life saver. Edit: thanks for all the kind words! I’m in my 30s now and better than ever thanks to therapy and community 💛 I realize it’s not a trauma dump now 😅

Pregnancy is a level of body horror men could never understand. So many men are so happy to just think oh their stomach boats, they get morning sickness and mood swings, then there's a baby after some painful aches. They don't understand all the changes that happen to a women's body, the fear of childbirth because it is scary, the months of recovery after birth, there's so much more to it than just the basic things people know about it.
I am terrified of pregnancy and have told my husband multiple things that happen to your body or could happen. He knows A LOT at this point and has always been sympathetic to me if the situation happened, but we both agree kids aren’t for us at this point.
Let’s be careful not to use pregnant people as an object lesson for your own distress. Lots of people want the experience, find meaning in it, and inhabit what you’re calling body horror for 9 months of time. Pregnant people are more likely to be exposed to violence at the hands of others and displaying them as a horrific museum piece in people’s minds is not the way to accomplish your desire to be understood or protected in this arena.
@@andianderson3017 good point. sometimes complications actually arise due to a lack of support (on an interpersonal or medical level). that's the real body horror of it all. of course, even with the best care possible bodies can just fail us sometimes, but i think we overlook how much systemic failures contribute to pregnancy being much scarier than it needs to be

I never wanted people to treat pregnancy as horrific, I just wanted respect as someone who chose to take the risk, and did not regret taking it for my child. I want them to listen to me and appreciate me. I didn’t want them tell me I’m stupid for having another child or acting horrified that I did because it bothers THEM. It wasn’t about anyone else but me and my child. The near death was absolutely at least partially the fault of a nurse who was treating me like an irritation and an object who needed to do what it was told. I am just not down with objectifying pregnancy as a metaphor or illustration for why some people don’t want to have children. I respect that choice all day, just respect mine and recognize that pregnancy represents a person who is in that body for a significant period of time.
“creepy men ARE nice & that’s the horrid part” no that’s soooo true like my mom & adults & even tv warned me about the weirdos creepy dude in the corner & not to talk to strangers but it took personal experience learning majority of the time it’s the quote unquote “nice” guys that try to push the boundaries & be inappropriate after they feel like they have your trust & can manipulate you. i was so focused on staying away from the “bad” guys i walked right into the “nice” guys radar :/ it even took me watching this movie when i was older to realize he was inappropriate the ENTIRE time not just the part where they were dancing & he makes a move on her. i 1000% agree w trin !!!
For real. The Stranger danger Thing Always annoys the hell Out of me. Throughout my Teens my parents kept making me scared to be Out at night, to be aware of "creepy" men (which turned Out to be every men in the street), telling me to Not Go Home alone or Go Out alone. Aka: restrict my movements and make me paranoid so i dont get jumped by a Stranger. Now all of that is warranted to a certain degree. If im Out alone, i should be aware of my surroundings. Stuff can Happen. But Theres a difference between being aware and being terrified. And of course the majority of the time, it isnt the Stranger in the street thats the Problem. It's the nice Guy at the Party, it's someone's friend or boyfriend, Most of the time it's a Family member or a Family friend. Instead of making Girls scared of Strangers, we should be teaching them boundaries and how to recognize inappropriate behavior.

But a guy I knew totally tried to take advantage of me being drunk and I’ll never forget it. Before anything happened he kept asking me throughout the night if I was okay, feigning nice guy but totally checking how gone I was. Even drunk I knew something was off about him but my bf didn’t believe me and kept leaving me alone which gave the guy an opportunity to literally grab me by my wrist and pull me into a bedroom! When you first watch this film, you might think that Juno and Mark are going to have an affair, but fortunately, that's not what happens. We see before she does what's happening, including Mark starting to dress like Juno, and she's horrified that he wants to leave his wife and unborn child to chase a pipe dream. His regression into immaturity triggered her coming of age.
Wow what a great observation about him starting to dress like her. I noticed the similarity but chalked it up to just typical masculine fashion, not looking into the deeper meaning. Super creepy
As someone who had a baby at 16, this movie means so much to me. So many pieces of the story ring so true and are told with so much compassion. I love that the focus is on Juno's growth and well being. And the scene after she has the baby when she is laying in the bed and starts to cry is just perfection. She had choices and she made the one that was right for her but that doesn't mean it wasn't painful. Its this very real moment of humanity that teen parents are not often afforded. Love this movie so much.

You write very beautifully, I'm also glad to know that this movie is a good depiction of what teen moms go through. My own mom had me at only 18 (barely, just turned 18 two months before I was born), and every year I get older is another year I wonder how my mom did it at my age? It has given me so much more empathy towards her, and I feel like I can understand her so much better now. Thank you for sharing ❤
My mom was adopted in 1960... I think about what my biological grandmother must have gone through more than anyone might expect. My mom never brought up her own adoption and I'm very close with her adoptive mom, but I still think about her and wonder.

Absolutely! I don’t understand why people characterize this movie as pro-life. Like, it openly mocks people who are “pro-life”, and even though Juno doesn’t go through with the abortion, it’s because she wasn’t comfortable in the facility and she chose not to go through with it
But we also shouldn't have to constantly act sad about abortion and pretend like it isn't a fantastic medical advancement. You should be allowed to be happy that abortion is possible and not feel negative about it just to have people respect our rights.

I think thats summed up well with the dialog between Juno and the soon to be new mom "oh pregnancy is beautiful" "lucky you don't have to be pregnant" like... both are true and neither person is wrong for feeling that way (although they said it out loud😂) because yeah, Juno is a kid. To her pregnancy is this horrifying thing out of her control, but to the woman who wants to adopt her baby because she can't have one? She's not a kid, she "should" be able to have a baby but can't.
@@Aster_Risk Medical advancement? Jewish women have been providing women with abortions for thousands of years. I’m not sure if it was legal or not. I know they would usually do them during the night, but I read that was because many of the women they preformed the procedures on were Christian, and Christians don’t allow abortion. Jews believe the soul enters the body when a baby takes its first breath through, so abortion is allowed. Mothers would teach their daughters how to preform them, and that would continue through the generations. The way the procedures are currently done can be seen as an advancement. However, that doesn’t mean the Jewish women were doing anything super unsafe or unsanitary or anything like that.

being an adult man this movie feels so different than It did when i was a kid. As a teacher, especially now, I’ve become so aware of how vulnerable kids can be to grooming and manipulation in general. It’s really dangerous when adults prioritize themselves in relationships with kids, or blur the lines between guidance and friendship. Movies like this are incredibly important for boys and men to see, because they hold up a mirror to the ones behaving this way, whether they want to realize it or not.
Absolutely true. It does not take much for kids to think you're cool. Vulnerable children who crave attention and guidance will suction onto you if you're kind to them and see them often. That kind of attention can feel good-- Especially if you're an immature and not very successful adult. BUT IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE. A mature adult redirects the child to a community support network of friends and family. An immature or predatory adult seeks to isolate the child and fill the role as their only confidant.

The more I watch this film, the more I appreciate Mac and Bren's characters. They're not exactly thrilled to hear about Juno's pregnancy, but they're calm for the most part, and trust her to make her own decisions. Also, Mac's speech about how the right person will love you at your worst lives in my head, rent free.

I think when I watched this I was struck by how everyone is making sensible decisions. To adopt out the baby, to leave the creepy man rather than forgive, even the way the parents support Juno, it's all like, people are making the best choices in the difficult circumstances.
I think the reason I also like that scene of “I just thought you were the kind of girl who knew when is when” is because it tackles the stereotype of “fast girls” who get pregnant and forces us to realize that even girls “like Juno” who “should know better” can make mistakes like not practicing safe sex, or just one slip up could result in something so big like pregnancy.
That scene killed me. I could just feel the disappointment oozing through the screen. Having had the experience of my parents being literally mad at me when I was pregnant, it was like a kick to the gut.
Diablo Cody did a great job writing Mark\Vanessa. She made you initially like mark and dislike Vanessa (your tween years reaction, and my adult initial viewing reaction) and by the end you’ve totally flipped that. Artful writing. It will always be one of my faves. I hope it brought you some comfort this week.
talking to so many women in adulthood about Juno, I think part of the art of the film is how your perception of the characters' actions changes as you get older. not intentional but so important.

I remember watching this when I was younger, I'd say I was probably 11/12 and I think how much my opinion on the relationship with mark and Juno has changed through the years shows how well it was played and how people Junos age don't think it's as much of a problem. When I first watched it I just thought he was nice and they just had things in common and hung out and didn't understand Vanessa's reaction, when I was 16 I thought it was just them being friends until the last scene where he makes it RIDICULOUSLY obvious but still thought they had built that up and I thought she was so mature for someone who was meant to be my age, and then when I watched it when I was like 18/20 I realised that from day one he was weird and their relationship was not ok. I think people do forget how young she is, and the fact she is quite a lonely character (obviously she has her family and her best friend, but she doesn't have a group or a partner going through it with her) adds another layer of vulnerability that mark can use as an excuse.
The way she reacted made me think this maybe wasn’t the first time something like this happened. She wasn’t possessive of her husband but protective of Juno. I thought she was jealous of Juno’s friendship with Mark at first.
@laurajaynenolan2149 looking at it now I'm in my mid 20s I'd 100% react the way Vanessa did, in this situation she acts how she should. She's angry and feels betrayed by mark but doesn't put any blame on Juno, if anything she does what she can to protect Juno. I think it shows how wonderful of a mother she will be. The fact she immediately goes to blame mark might even be that her or a friend had something similar to them happen and she recognises the signs of grooming from personal experience. I don't know if she would have still been with mark if he had done this before.

I haven't seen this movie SINCE I was like 11- maybe 13, and i relate to your comment so much!!! I was shocked to see the top comment talking about a creep because I was like "....in Juno?? Do I just not remember?" but seeing it now as a 24 year old...😥 oh god! It's actually scary how this is so accurate to real life.

I watched this when it came out a few times and watched it again recently, after 4 kids. The part that always hits me hardest is after Juno gives birth and her dad is comforting her, and he says, “You’ll be back here one day on your own terms” Makes me sob every time. The decision Juno makes isn’t an easy one, and I love that he tells her it’ll happen again and be different next time. Such a great movie
so validating to hear someone talk about how creepy men can also be nice, they can be charming, they can be handsome, you can share interests, sometimes you don't feel creeped out but more so infatuated. and they're everywhere. not just the sketchy guy you might see out in public and stay away from, but places where you feel safe, comfortable, and never thought you'd find yourself in a predatory situation. nothing ever went into sexual territory but i had a very similar situation like this when i was 13 with an adult, and it's good to see that representation with juno and to hear someone actually talk about this.
What u talk about 20:00 made me think about how Paulie is a runner and doesn’t have to give that up. He’s able to continue to be extremely physical. I know somebody in my high school that got pregnant and she had to stop swimming bc of it (she was on my swim team). There’s a lot of sacrifices women have to make that men do not have to. Some food for thought.
Dude the whole thing about men pay child support is dumb too bc the parent paying child support is paying a supplemental amount but the primary parent is STILL paying more. Not to mention the expense of constant time and attention, the expense on the body of the mother, etc. Like if you want it to be just about money. Child support is a small portion of what it requires to actually raise a child.
17:25 I wonder if that audience response was intended, cause to the naive (like pre-teen/teen) viewer, Vanessa is the "nagging wife" who doesn't want to let her husband have any fun, which is how Juno sees her (at least at first) which pushes her further away from Vanessa and closer to Mark. So the viewer is caught up in this predatory relationship along with Juno. In a way, the movie manipulates the viewer the way Mark manipulates Juno, but in such a way that invites the viewer to later reflect on why they reacted the way they did towards Mark and Vanessa, why that manipulation worked, on the viewer and on Juno, and why the viewer perceived the relationship with the teacher as gross but not Juno's relationship with Mark
20:42 the trauma after giving birth and giving the baby up is insanely hard, i didn't feel this film till i put a child up for adoption, you TRY to rationalize it, but it still leaves invisible scars, the guy who got me pregnant saud he was fine only to tell my family he didnt know..i had proof he did but the stress caused me to hemorrhage and lose my uterus, adoption isnt easy and i still cry, i dont regret it but i feel guilty. This is honestly a good film and it hurts differently now
I feel like if there were a sequel to this story, Juno would eventually put two and two together on Mark's grooming when she's much older and closer to his age, because let's face it, even though she gets upset about him leaving Vanessa, she's still not fully realizing the gravity of this situation at this point in her life since she's not even seeing this as what Leah is doing/feeling with the teacher. So many people have this epiphany later than we'd like, but that's just being human and growing up. It was appalling and heartbreaking when Demi Lovato had the courage to release their song "29" about their experience with Wilmer and realizing the entire 6 year relationship starting when they were 17 and only making it publicly official when they turned 18 was majorly messed up. "Finally 29. 17 would NEVER cross my mind!" and the aftermath of the song's release was a tsunami of women--of all ages--bringing their own grooming experiences into the discussion. The grammar in that last bit is a little wonky, sorry, but yeah. I love this movie too. Elliott is such a brilliant actor, as is Michael. Everybody is. Juno's dad is the dad I want and need (but that's a rant for another time lol). and I hate that the anti-choice weirdos co-opted this movie for their agenda and the director and writer openly admitted that she wishes she never made the movie because of that.

If you like Juno, I recommend the sweet indie movie, Grandma. It's a film about a helpless granddaughter who is broke, pregnant and needs money for an abortion before she goes to her scheduled appointment. Her grandmother drops everything to help her as they adventure to find the money. This is a great film that touches not only on abortions and women's autonomy but also deals with grief, complicated relationships, and dysfunctional parenting And Lily Tomlin plays Grandma in the film... Like... What's better casting than that???
i also think that while we should teach kids about the nuances of a “creep”/predator, we also have to call out that person when we see signs of it happening. Cause mark is only bold enough to prey on Juno because no one outright calls out his behavior until it goes way too far. As a society I just think we need to shift our focus from having kids constantly be on alert to having these people who exhibit disgusting behaviors to be the ones afraid to even try and step out of line.
I can’t stress enough how important this is! Thank you 👏👏👏 Don’t wait till it’s awfully obvious that a kid is being groomed/treated inappropriately. At the first sign, confront and stop them on the spot. Show them there are consequences to acting inappropriately. And don’t rely only on the kid protecting themselves, because they’re obviously overpowered!! They can and should try all they want to break free from an abusive relationship, but the adults should also do their part supporting that child. My adults looked away, because it wasn’t terribly obvious. They still do. They even have taken his side. I had nowhere to go, because they enabled him. Even if I just wanted to leave, because I knew in my guts it was messed up, I could do nothing. I would always be treated in a menacing way whenever I wasn’t compliant, so even asking for help was scary. What I’m saying is, don’t rely on the kids saving themselves alone. If you’re in a position we’re you see something that’s wrong and can help anyhow, please do it. You may be that child’s only hope into safety.
this is my favorite movie as well, i have a long relationship with it as well; I had my daughter at 15 and this movie was very important to me while i was going through the process, particularly since i didnt have any options because of religions parents..so it was a comfort to watch another weird girl go through a teen pregnancy and see the baby be adopted! another thing i wanted to point out, the yellow note at the end is one of my favorite details, because its just a receipt Juno wrote on the fly. Early in the movie we see Vannessa picturing what will go on that wall and imagines a perfect image, in line with the rest of the house. Her putting the yellow note up shows she embraced some if Junos imperfections and quirks and will hopefully pass those stories on to her son ! just a sweet detail i love!
I love your talk about how monetary support cannot compare to what a woman goes through. Not only is Juno a teenager, dealing with peer pressure surrounding sex, she has to deal with the repercussions. Just based on this video, I feel like Mark was a safe space for Juno. He made her feel like she could be a person, rather than a surrogate. The sad thing is, he used that to get close to her. He liked playing house with her. It was never about how he felt about her. It was about how she made him feel. I can easily see a younger person looking at this like it's love. That's why this movie is so important. It not only explores what happens after a teenager gets pregnant, but how that affects their relationships.
My mom had me at 19. Juno was the first “grown up” movie that I ever watched from under a blanket when I was supposed to be asleep and for that reason it’s resonated with me for years. I’m happy to see other people who enjoy it as much as I do.
It was quite a few years ago now but when I was 24 and I was walking to get some paint and this guy asks for directions then starts a convo with ends with him asking me out 😅 I tell him I have a child and I'm married and he was surprised he thought I was 17.... he was clearly at least 35 he had salt and pepper hair gross. He also kept trying despite my marriage 😳 so gross.
Weirdly the part that stuck with me most was when her parents were making comments about how it was HER fault because the guy “doesn’t have it in him” or whatever they say. The gag is that the dude is a wimp and that Juno is more aggressive. But it comes off as sad because obviously there are two people involved in making a baby and it is so casually placing all the blame on her.
girl I'm 21 and in the past year I've had not 1 but *2* creepy older men hit on me at my college! One was a professor (who was fired for other reasons thank god) and another is one of my coworkers (who is on thin ice). Both of them are above 40 and *both* have children. It's important to remember this stuff doesn't just happen to teenage girls, and that you're not immune to it even as you get older. I've never seen Juno, but watching the grooming scenes reminded me exactly of the creepy interactions I've had with older men. Stay safe out there everyone, and above all fuck creepy men
To add about creepy men, there was a middle school teacher that was very popular with the kids because he was trying to be the cool teacher and until watching this I didn't realize how much like Mark he was. There was always that feeling underneath of this is maybe crossing a line but usually it was always the girls who felt it and didn't want to say anything because he was so well liked. One day he thoroughly crossed the line though when he stuck his fingers in a student's mouth to scoop out the apple she had eaten off his desk and tried to make it seem playful. Thankfully she immediately went to the principal and he ended up getting busted for child porn and went to jail
That escalated quickly... To be fair isn't that why we have to say something? By the time someone's acting like that in public I don't even want to think about what they're doing in private.
Non-binary man here, I feel like that should be fine too when speaking on Ellen Page when she hadn’t yet figured out her identity, I think it’s the same thing as someone in the closet, we shouldn’t out them until they’re ready and even if a public person was straight for a time and eventually came out you can still refer to them as being straight and in a straight relationship without it being controversial since it’s just a part of history, I mean you can call the actor Elliot, I think it might be confusing for some though and eliminates Elliot Page’s story and career

I adore Elliot and this film! I first found him through Hard Candy of all things XD He was one of those actors I wanted to watch everything he was in. Fast forward to Juno. I took my family to see it in theaters and left out what it was about XD But even after all these years they never fail to say isn't that the pregnant kid when we watch stuff with Elliot in it. Needless to say this film left a mark on them too lol I love revisiting this film every now and then too, as well as Whip It which you would love!!

I feel like Juno, Whip It, Little Miss Sunshine are films I constantly rewatch when I need to be comforted, or even when I go to sleep. I just saw Juno for the first time recently, actually! It was always one of those films that interested me, but I never got around to watching. I got pretty sick and figured that was the perfect opportunity and I couldn’t have been more happy. I love this film so so much! I also want to add, I love how naturally this movie conveys Juno’s age and immaturity. It’s not this over exaggerated quirk, but it’s still there. I love how real this movie feels.
I think part of what motivates Juno to get closer to Marks is also that she likes the idea of her baby going to someone who she feels has similar intrests to her. While she's definitely attracted to him she genuinely isn't expecting anything to come from it and that adds to her horror when she finally realises what was really going on and find out Mark wants to leave his marriage. I felt so bad for her in that moment as a teen and now. She trusted the adult to have good intentions and he just doesn't.
I cannot handle the scene at the end where Sea of Love starts playing😭 There are way too many specific coincidences in that scene that align with my life perfectly. I was adopted and given up shortly after birth, and that song is the song that I associate with my biological father who has passed away. I associate it with him because he literally dated the artist who sang the song (Cat Power). The worst thing is I associated the song with him before I even remembered which scene in the movie it was from so you can imagine my shock when I rewatched the movie, waiting for the song to come, and then heard that first chord at THAT scene😭💓 Love it so much though, such a beautiful song and movie

Juno has such a deep place in my soul I bonded with my mom over this movie, even though we had very different perspectives... her resenting being adopted and me having always wanted to adopt. To this day, it ages like a fine wine and offers a new perspective each time...
My teacher was also a family friend and had known me since I was around eight years old. I wish I would’ve seen this movie, when I was in college I was still 17 and his actions made me uncomfortable but I just thought he was trying to be nice. Thankfully I had an older classmate and when I walked to him about it, he told me to not be alone in a room with our teacher anymore and that if I ever felt uncomfortable come find him. I don’t talk to that classmate anymore but thank you Connor for looking out for a young girl who didn’t understand that the creeps are the ones who are overly nice.

I remember when I was a senior in hs, we went on a field trip to the Grammy museum and we watched Juno followed by a Q&A with some of them actors. It was very fascinating seeing the movie and hearing the perspective from people that worked on the movie

People who call the Mark Plot unnecessary also miss the point, to go alongside of what You're saying, is that big Life events tend to compound on one another. You don't experience one thing in a vacuum. Juno is an incredibly realistic feeling movie because it has so much mess going on all at the same time.
I have not watched this movie since the first time when I was so so young. I was way too young to understand the actual themes and message this movie delivered. I truly wish that I had seen it when I was between the ages of 12-15 because I was 100% into older guys and was actually taken advantage of by multiple men older than 18. As a 23 year old woman now looking back I am disgusted. I know that this is the unfortunate case for thousands of young girls. Thank you Trin for making this video, I hope your young audience will take your words to heart and protect themselves from creeps.
Juno and Easy A are some of my fav movies from those years of my life man. They're some of my big comfort movies. Also I wouldn't say Bleeker is apathetic to her pregnancy, I always saw it was fear/awkwardness. Bro seemed really terrified and froze up. Being awkward and struggling to express himself is a huge part of his character.

I was groomed 3 times and I am barely 20. It was an older man and then two guys that were almost adults when I was 12. The bad guys can look like good ones and grooming is a long and manipulative thing that I didn't even learn about until I was 17. Juno was so important to me. It really helped me reflect on what it meant to be validated growing up and how much I craved it regardless of where it came from. It wasn’t always the best places and I had to make those mistakes on my own with no one. I hope other people can understand how much movies(and other media) make people feel less alone in the world.

dude this movie is sorta a comfort for me too -- i watched it around new years with other patients in a psych ward (there were like three of us and a nurse that loved the movie) we were all kinda upset about missing new years at home and this was a movie i really really enjoyed watching while we all just chatted also made me cry 👍

aside from being an awesome movie, what i REALLY love about juno is that she has a very supportive and involved family but that doesn’t absolve her from being vulnerable. she’s also portrayed as very assertive and a know-it-all which throws young viewers off because they fall under the impression (me included when i first watched it) that she’s the one in control when it’s the opposite. she’s the child, she was never in control. i mean even bren pointed out that juno, as much as she thinks, doesn’t know how complex adult relationships are. she was warned and made aware of how inappropriate it is for her to show up unannounced without a guardian with her and to hang out ALONE with mark. yet all of this didn’t make her any less prone to grooming. it’s so rare to see someone in a film/tv show who doesn’t “seem” like a potential victim, fall under the manipulation tactics of an adult.

Movies like Juno and The Perks of Being a Walflower are very special. I feel like most of us watched those movies when we were really young, but as we got older we started to pick up on things we never understood and related to them. They're nostalgic and taught me very important lessons. These movies resonated with me even if I don't find them super relatable. And we don't get these kind of movies made anymore, and I'm glad people are still talking about them
even when you’re 18 or just becoming an “adult,” be skeptical of any older person that feels like they’re in a different stage of life than you. That means if you’re just starting college and they have been working a full time job with benefits, why else would they have interest in someone significantly younger? I always have thought to myself for every year of difference there’s literally millions of other people they could form an intimate relationship with. And that number grows exponentially. It’s okay to want to take your time to find people who make you feel safe. Any older person with power over you should not be seeking validation from people that aren’t their own peers :(

I have a fonder appreciation for this movie not only bc I’m a mother who’s currently pregnant with her second kid but because of you and you make this movie such a beautiful coming of age comfort movie which I’d say is my comfort pregnancy movie bc I had only seen it a couple times but I too also didn’t like Vanessa at first and first watched this as a teen but now as a 25 year old soon to be mother of two I can appreciate it more and literally the acting, the writing, the actors are just everything. I’ve also always wanted to see little miss sunshine so I’m definitely on the lookout for that next ☀️
back in my hs freshman year, my health teachers showed us Juno during our puberty/teen development unit. it's one of my faves of all time and one of the best 2000s and coming of age movies.

26:47 thank you for making this point, I tried to convey this a few years ago to avoid a situation like this: I had a close friend up until a few years ago. He grew up in a home without stable income, verbally and probably physically abusive, and his father went to prison for something relating to being a p*do (I don't remember details). Kid spent years telling us he didn't wanna be like his dad and we thought we could be a good influence. He, my bf and another close friend all started working at a local pet store that opened- we were maybe 23 when they started there. Kid stayed at the store for a while and we'd all still hang out nightly. One night he said a high school girl he worked with dropped him off after work. Immediately we all were like "hey dude, no. You can get along at work but she's 16 and that's not a boundary you can cross." I even leveled with him when it kept happening, explaining "when you're a teenage girl, theres a strong likelihood that if an older guy pays attention to you, you're gonna develop a crush. It's just natural. She may like your attention and want to be your friend but it's YOUR responsibility to hold the line. Get along at work but being alone or spending time together outside, don't do it, for your or her sakes". Thought we got through to him. Cut to FATHERS DAY WEEKEND 2 years later. Kid had developed epilepsy and we hadn't seen / heard from him in a few days and his mom said he was in the hospital so we thought it was a seizure. I remember laying in bed with my BF when he got the text (I was notably left out of the group lol) "I'm not in the hospital for myself.... my TWO YEAR OLD SON has pneumonia". He not only has a son, it's with the SAME GIRL we told him not even to befriend bc she was too young. And he proceeded to come over and smoke and play video games NIGHTLY FOR TWO YEARS knowing this kid was out there. They'd "reconciled" and he met the child and bonded with him, hence why he suddenly was important enough to tell us about. I thought the other boys were going to kill him. As of now, guy still has an on-off relationship with the kid, has been in and out of court for years, the girls life has been altered for ever, and we do not speak to him.
We're 30/31 now and as someone who grew up with Juno but didn't understand how absolutely dangerous and disgusting Jason bateman's character was here until I was older, I'm so glad we're talking about this shit. So many girls are manipulated and groomed and assaulted by older men like this and it's so scary bc they literally make it seem so innocent to the child when EVERY ADULT can see it. It's despicable

I like that this movie is less about teenage pregnancy and more about teens dealing with adult situations and realizing "Oh wait, I'm not as mature as I thought and I can't really handle this situation." That is such a canon event in teenagehood and this movie did it perfectly

Absolutely! I defend fiercely! I'm always the 'protective mom' of whatever group I hang out in. If we go to bars I'm the one making sure people eat and drink water, watching all the belongings and drinks so they aren't tampered with, etc.
Telling off people for filming my friends drunk. Standing in between and telling off people who SA my friends, etc. I was at a music festival with my friends when a drunk guy tried to pee near us before he ended up smacking my friend's butt. I'm 5'4" and this man was taller than me but I went right in the middle of them and was ready to knock him the hell out if I needed to. I've taken Jiu-Jitsu but I definitely make sure I always have my safety devices as backup.
Always go for the 3N's Neck, Nuts, and last Nose. Nose is last because it can be fatal if you do it wrong. You want to immobilize 1st and foremost. The neck and nuts are the best option. Neck is number one because they will instinctually grab for their neck/ throat when you hit it. Nuts are 2nd because while it is effective they could block you with their legs if they see your kick coming in advance.
I'm nice and quiet but don't freaking cross my friends and me because I will be in your face ready to strike. I've had a few moments where my friends went dead silent and they just went whoa "who the heck was that" referring to me lol

the juno soundtrack was heavily inspired by elliott page's own taste in music as a teenager! the director wanted to know what the teens were listening to, and ironically this movie ended up influencing indie music even more. in a way, we have Elliott to thank for that era of moldy peaches - esque music.
I love and listen to the soundtrack all the time, and it music I don’t even really listen to, some of the songs are actually going on my wedding playlist 😅

Pregnancy is a level of body horror men could never understand. So many men are so happy to just think oh their stomach boats, they get morning sickness and mood swings, then there's a baby after some painful aches. They don't understand all the changes that happen to a women's body, the fear of childbirth because it is scary, the months of recovery after birth, there's so much more to it than just the basic things people know about it.

I am terrified of pregnancy and have told my husband multiple things that happen to your body or could happen. He knows A LOT at this point and has always been sympathetic to me if the situation happened, but we both agree kids aren’t for us at this point.
Let’s be careful not to use pregnant people as an object lesson for your own distress. Lots of people want the experience, find meaning in it, and inhabit what you’re calling body horror for 9 months of time. Pregnant people are more likely to be exposed to violence at the hands of others and displaying them as a horrific museum piece in people’s minds is not the way to accomplish your desire to be understood or protected in this arena.
@@andianderson3017 good point. sometimes complications actually arise due to a lack of support (on an interpersonal or medical level). that's the real body horror of it all. of course, even with the best care possible bodies can just fail us sometimes, but i think we overlook how much systemic failures contribute to pregnancy being much scarier than it needs to be

I never wanted people to treat pregnancy as horrific, I just wanted respect as someone who chose to take the risk, and did not regret taking it for my child. I want them to listen to me and appreciate me. I didn’t want them tell me I’m stupid for having another child or acting horrified that I did because it bothers THEM. It wasn’t about anyone else but me and my child. The near death was absolutely at least partially the fault of a nurse who was treating me like an irritation and an object who needed to do what it was told. I am just not down with objectifying pregnancy as a metaphor or illustration for why some people don’t want to have children. I respect that choice all day, just respect mine and recognize that pregnancy represents a person who is in that body for a significant period of time.

For real. The Stranger danger Thing Always annoys the hell Out of me. Throughout my Teens my parents kept making me scared to be Out at night, to be aware of "creepy" men (which turned Out to be every men in the street), telling me to Not Go Home alone or Go Out alone. Aka: restrict my movements and make me paranoid so i dont get jumped by a Stranger.
Now all of that is warranted to a certain degree. If im Out alone, i should be aware of my surroundings. Stuff can Happen. But Theres a difference between being aware and being terrified.
And of course the majority of the time, it isnt the Stranger in the street thats the Problem. It's the nice Guy at the Party, it's someone's friend or boyfriend, Most of the time it's a Family member or a Family friend.
Instead of making Girls scared of Strangers, we should be teaching them boundaries and how to recognize inappropriate behavior.

But a guy I knew totally tried to take advantage of me being drunk and I’ll never forget it. Even drunk I knew something was off about him but my bf didn’t believe me and kept leaving me alone which gave the guy an opportunity to literally grab me by my wrist and pull me into a bedroom! When you first watch this film, you might think that Juno and Mark are going to have an affair, but fortunately, that's not what happens. We see before she does what's happening, including Mark starting to dress like Juno, and she's horrified that he wants to leave his wife and unborn child to chase a pipe dream. His regression into immaturity triggered her coming of age.
Wow what a great observation about him starting to dress like her. I noticed the similarity but chalked it up to just typical masculine fashion, not looking into the deeper meaning. Super creepy

As someone who had a baby at 16, this movie means so much to me. So many pieces of the story ring so true and are told with so much compassion. I love that the focus is on Juno's growth and well being. And the scene after she has the baby when she is laying in the bed and starts to cry is just perfection. She had choices and she made the one that was right for her but that doesn't mean it wasn't painful. Its this very real moment of humanity that teen parents are not often afforded. Love this movie so much.

Absolutely! I don’t understand why people characterize this movie as pro-life. Like, it openly mocks people who are “pro-life”, and even though Juno doesn’t go through with the abortion, it’s because she wasn’t comfortable in the facility and she chose not to go through with it
But we also shouldn't have to constantly act sad about abortion and pretend like it isn't a fantastic medical advancement. You should be allowed to be happy that abortion is possible and not feel negative about it just to have people respect our rights.

I think thats summed up well with the dialog between Juno and the soon to be new mom "oh pregnancy is beautiful" "lucky you don't have to be pregnant" like... both are true and neither person is wrong for feeling that way (although they said it out loud😂) because yeah, Juno is a kid. To her pregnancy is this horrifying thing out of her control, but to the woman who wants to adopt her baby because she can't have one? She's not a kid, she "should" be able to have a baby but can't.
@@Aster_Risk Medical advancement? Jewish women have been providing women with abortions for thousands of years. I’m not sure if it was legal or not. I know they would usually do them during the night, but I read that was because many of the women they preformed the procedures on were Christian, and Christians don’t allow abortion. Jews believe the soul enters the body when a baby takes its first breath through, so abortion is allowed. Mothers would teach their daughters how to preform them, and that would continue through the generations. The way the procedures are currently done can be seen as an advancement. However, that doesn’t mean the Jewish women were doing anything super unsafe or unsanitary or anything like that.
But you _are_ encouraging abortion if you are including it as a choice at all.

being an adult man this movie feels so different than It did when i was a kid. As a teacher, especially now, I’ve become so aware of how vulnerable kids can be to grooming and manipulation in general. It’s really dangerous when adults prioritize themselves in relationships with kids, or blur the lines between guidance and friendship. Movies like this are incredibly important for boys and men to see, because they hold up a mirror to the ones behaving this way, whether they want to realize it or not.

Absolutely true. It does not take much for kids to think you're cool. Vulnerable children who crave attention and guidance will suction onto you if you're kind to them and see them often. The more I watch this film, the more I appreciate Mac and Bren's characters. They're not exactly thrilled to hear about Juno's pregnancy, but they're calm for the most part, and trust her to make her own decisions. Also, Mac's speech about how the right person will love you at your worst lives in my head, rent free.

I think when I watched this I was struck by how everyone is making sensible decisions. To adopt out the baby, to leave the creepy man rather than forgive, even the way the parents support Juno, it's all like, people are making the best choices in the difficult circumstances.
I think the reason I also like that scene of “I just thought you were the kind of girl who knew when is when” is because it tackles the stereotype of “fast girls” who get pregnant and forces us to realize that even girls “like Juno” who “should know better” can make mistakes like not practicing safe sex, or just one slip up could result in something so big like pregnancy.

Diablo Cody did a great job writing Mark\Vanessa. She made you initially like mark and dislike Vanessa (your tween years reaction, and my adult initial viewing reaction) and by the end you’ve totally flipped that. Artful writing. It will always be one of my faves. I hope it brought you some comfort this week.
talking to so many women in adulthood about Juno, I think part of the art of the film is how your perception of the characters' actions changes as you get older. not intentional but so important.

I remember watching this when I was younger, I'd say I was probably 11/12 and I think how much my opinion on the relationship with mark and Juno has changed through the years shows how well it was played and how people Junos age don't think it's as much of a problem. When I first watched it I just thought he was nice and they just had things in common and hung out and didn't understand Vanessa's reaction, when I was 16 I thought it was just them being friends until the last scene where he makes it RIDICULOUSLY obvious but still thought they had built that up and I thought she was so mature for someone who was meant to be my age, and then when I watched it when I was like 18/20 I realised that from day one he was weird and their relationship was not ok.
I think people do forget how young she is, and the fact she is quite a lonely character (obviously she has her family and her best friend, but she doesn't have a group or a partner going through it with her) adds another layer of vulnerability that mark can use as an excuse.
The way she reacted made me think this maybe wasn’t the first time something like this happened. She wasn’t possessive of her husband but protective of Juno. I thought she was jealous of Juno’s friendship with Mark at first.
@laurajaynenolan2149 looking at it now I'm in my mid 20s I'd 100% react the way Vanessa did, in this situation she acts how she should. She's angry and feels betrayed by mark but doesn't put any blame on Juno, if anything she does what she can to protect Juno. I think it shows how wonderful of a mother she will be.
The fact she immediately goes to blame mark might even be that her or a friend had something similar to them happen and she recognises the signs of grooming from personal experience. I don't know if she would have still been with mark if he had done this before.

Makes me sob every time. The decision Juno makes isn’t an easy one, and I love that he tells her it’ll happen again and be different next time. Such a great movie
so validating to hear someone talk about how creepy men can also be nice, they can be charming, they can be handsome, you can share interests, sometimes you don't feel creeped out but more so infatuated. and they're everywhere. not just the sketchy guy you might see out in public and stay away from, but places where you feel safe, comfortable, and never thought you'd find yourself in a predatory situation. nothing ever went into sexual territory but i had a very similar situation like this when i was 13 with an adult, and it's good to see that representation with juno and to hear someone actually talk about this.
What u talk about 20:00 made me think about how Paulie is a runner and doesn’t have to give that up. He’s able to continue to be extremely physical. I know somebody in my high school that got pregnant and she had to stop swimming bc of it (she was on my swim team). There’s a lot of sacrifices women have to make that men do not have to. Dude the whole thing about men pay child support is dumb too bc the parent paying child support is paying a supplemental amount but the primary parent is STILL paying more. Not to mention the expense of constant time and attention, the expense on the body of the mother, etc.
Like if you want it to be just about money. Child support is a small portion of what it requires to actually raise a child.
17:25 I wonder if that audience response was intended, cause to the naive (like pre-teen/teen) viewer, Vanessa is the "nagging wife" who doesn't want to let her husband have any fun, which is how Juno sees her (at least at first) which pushes her further away from Vanessa and closer to Mark. So the viewer is caught up in this predatory relationship along with Juno. In a way, the movie manipulates the viewer the way Mark manipulates Juno, but in such a way that invites the viewer to later reflect on why they reacted the way they did towards Mark and Vanessa, why that manipulation worked, on the viewer and on Juno, and why the viewer perceived the relationship with the teacher as gross but not Juno's relationship with Mark

20:42 the trauma after giving birth and giving the baby up is insanely hard, i didn't feel this film till i put a child up for adoption, you TRY to rationalize it, but it still leaves invisible scars, the guy who got me pregnant saud he was fine only to tell my family he didnt know..i had proof he did but the stress caused me to hemorrhage and lose my uterus, adoption isnt easy and i still cry, i dont regret it but i feel guilty. This is honestly a good film and it hurts differently now
I feel like if there were a sequel to this story, Juno would eventually put two and two together on Mark's grooming when she's much older and closer to his age, because let's face it, even though she gets upset about him leaving Vanessa, she's still not fully realizing the gravity of this situation at this point in her life since she's not even seeing this as what Leah is doing/feeling with the teacher. So many people have this epiphany later than we'd like, but that's just being human and growing up. It was appalling and heartbreaking when Demi Lovato had the courage to release their song "29" about their experience with Wilmer and realizing the entire 6 year relationship starting when they were 17 and only making it publicly official when they turned 18 was majorly messed up. "Finally 29. 17 would NEVER cross my mind!" and the aftermath of the song's release was a tsunami of women--of all ages--bringing their own grooming experiences into the discussion. The grammar in that last bit is a little wonky, sorry, but yeah. I love this movie too. Elliott is such a brilliant actor, as is Michael. Everybody is. Juno's dad is the dad I want and need (but that's a rant for another time lol). and I hate that the anti-choice weirdos co-opted this movie for their agenda and the director and writer openly admitted that she wishes she never made the movie because of that.

If you like Juno, I recommend the sweet indie movie, Grandma. It's a film about a helpless granddaughter who is broke, pregnant and needs money for an abortion before she goes to her scheduled appointment. Her grandmother drops everything to help her as they adventure to find the money. This is a great film that touches not only on abortions and women's autonomy but also deals with grief, complicated relationships, and dysfunctional parenting
And Lily Tomlin plays Grandma in the film... Like... What's better casting than that???

i also think that while we should teach kids about the nuances of a “creep”/predator, we also have to call out that person when we see signs of it happening. Cause mark is only bold enough to prey on Juno because no one outright calls out his behavior until it goes way too far. As a society I just think we need to shift our focus from having kids constantly be on alert to having these people who exhibit disgusting behaviors to be the ones afraid to even try and step out of line.

Don’t wait till it’s awfully obvious that a kid is being groomed/treated inappropriately.
At the first sign, confront and stop them on the spot. Show them there are consequences to acting inappropriately. And don’t rely only on the kid protecting themselves, because they’re obviously overpowered!!
They can and should try all they want to break free from an abusive relationship, but the adults should also do their part supporting that child.
My adults looked away, because it wasn’t terribly obvious. They still do. They even have taken his side.
I had nowhere to go, because they enabled him. Even if I just wanted to leave, because I knew in my guts it was messed up, I could do nothing. I would always be treated in a menacing way whenever I wasn’t compliant, so even asking for help was scary.
What I’m saying is, don’t rely on the kids saving themselves alone.
If you’re in a position we’re you see something that’s wrong and can help anyhow, please do it.
You may be that child’s only hope into safety.
this is my favorite movie as well, i have a long relationship with it as well; I had my daughter at 15 and this movie was very important to me while i was going through the process, particularly since i didnt have any options because of religions parents..so it was a comfort to watch another weird girl go through a teen pregnancy and see the baby be adopted!
another thing i wanted to point out, the yellow note at the end is one of my favorite details, because its just a receipt Juno wrote on the fly. Early in the movie we see Vannessa picturing what will go on that wall and imagines a perfect image, in line with the rest of the house. Her putting the yellow note up shows she embraced some if Junos imperfections and quirks and will hopefully pass those stories on to her son ! just a sweet detail i love!

I love your talk about how monetary support cannot compare to what a woman goes through. Not only is Juno a teenager, dealing with peer pressure surrounding sex, she has to deal with the repercussions. Just based on this video, I feel like Mark was a safe space for Juno. He made her feel like she could be a person, rather than a surrogate. The sad thing is, he used that to get close to her. He liked playing house with her. It was never about how he felt about her. It was about how she made him feel. I can easily see a younger person looking at this like it's love. That's why this movie is so important. It not only explores what happens after a teenager gets pregnant, but how that affects their relationships.

My mom had me at 19. Juno was the first “grown up” movie that I ever watched from under a blanket when I was supposed to be asleep and for that reason it’s resonated with me for years. I’m happy to see other people who enjoy it as much as I do.

It was quite a few years ago now but when I was 24 and I was walking to get some paint and this guy asks for directions then starts a convo with ends with him asking me out 😅 I tell him I have a child and I'm married and he was surprised he thought I was 17.... he was clearly at least 35 he had salt and pepper hair gross. He also kept trying despite my marriage 😳 so gross.

Weirdly the part that stuck with me most was when her parents were making comments about how it was HER fault because the guy “doesn’t have it in him” or whatever they say. The gag is that the dude is a wimp and that Juno is more aggressive. But it comes off as sad because obviously there are two people involved in making a baby and it is so casually placing all the blame on her.
girl I'm 21 and in the past year I've had not 1 but *2* creepy older men hit on me at my college! One was a professor (who was fired for other reasons thank god) and another is one of my coworkers (who is on thin ice). Both of them are above 40 and *both* have children. It's important to remember this stuff doesn't just happen to teenage girls, and that you're not immune to it even as you get older. I've never seen Juno, but watching the grooming scenes reminded me exactly of the creepy interactions I've had with older men.

To add about creepy men, there was a middle school teacher that was very popular with the kids because he was trying to be the cool teacher and until watching this I didn't realize how much like Mark he was. There was always that feeling underneath of this is maybe crossing a line but usually it was always the girls who felt it and didn't want to say anything because he was so well liked. One day he thoroughly crossed the line though when he stuck his fingers in a student's mouth to scoop out the apple she had eaten off his desk and tried to make it seem playful. Thankfully she immediately went to the principal and he ended up getting busted for child porn and went to jail
That escalated quickly...

I adore Elliot and this film! I first found him through Hard Candy of all things XD He was one of those actors I wanted to watch everything he was in.
Fast forward to Juno. I took my family to see it in theaters and left out what it was about XD But even after all these years they never fail to say isn't that the pregnant kid when we watch stuff with Elliot in it. Needless to say this film left a mark on them too lol

I just saw Juno for the first time recently, actually! It was always one of those films that interested me, but I never got around to watching. I got pretty sick and figured that was the perfect opportunity and I couldn’t have been more happy. I love this film so so much!
I also want to add, I love how naturally this movie conveys Juno’s age and immaturity. It’s not this over exaggerated quirk, but it’s still there. I love how real this movie feels.
I think part of what motivates Juno to get closer to Marks is also that she likes the idea of her baby going to someone who she feels has similar intrests to her. While she's definitely attracted to him she genuinely isn't expecting anything to come from it and that adds to her horror when she finally realises what was really going on and find out Mark wants to leave his marriage. I felt so bad for her in that moment as a teen and now. She trusted the adult to have good intentions and he just doesn't.

I cannot handle the scene at the end where Sea of Love starts playing😭 There are way too many specific coincidences in that scene that align with my life perfectly. I was adopted and given up shortly after birth, and that song is the song that I associate with my biological father who has passed away. I associate it with him because he literally dated the artist who sang the song (Cat Power). The worst thing is I associated the song with him before I even remembered which scene in the movie it was from so you can imagine my shock when I rewatched the movie, waiting for the song to come, and then heard that first chord at THAT scene😭💓 Love it so much though, such a beautiful song and movie

I bonded with my mom over this movie, even though we had very different perspectives... her resenting being adopted and me having always wanted to adopt.
To this day, it ages like a fine wine and offers a new perspective each time...
My teacher was also a family friend and had known me since I was around eight years old. I wish I would’ve seen this movie, when I was in college I was still 17 and his actions made me uncomfortable but I just thought he was trying to be nice. Thankfully I had an older classmate and when I walked to him about it, he told me to not be alone in a room with our teacher anymore and that if I ever felt uncomfortable come find him. I don’t talk to that classmate anymore but thank you Connor for looking out for a young girl who didn’t understand that the creeps are the ones who are overly nice.

I remember when I was a senior in hs, we went on a field trip to the Grammy museum and we watched Juno followed by a Q&A with some of them actors. It was very fascinating seeing the movie and hearing the perspective from people that worked on the movie

I have not watched this movie since the first time when I was so so young. I was way too young to understand the actual themes and message this movie delivered. I truly wish that I had seen it when I was between the ages of 12-15 because I was 100% into older guys and was actually taken advantage of by multiple men older than 18. As a 23 year old woman now looking back I am disgusted. I know that this is the unfortunate case for thousands of young girls. Thank you Trin for making this video, I hope your young audience will take your words to heart and protect themselves from creeps.

Juno was so important to me. It really helped me reflect on what it meant to be validated growing up and how much I craved it regardless of where it came from. aside from being an awesome movie, what i REALLY love about juno is that she has a very supportive and involved family but that doesn’t absolve her from being vulnerable. she’s also portrayed as very assertive and a know-it-all which throws young viewers off because they fall under the impression (me included when i first watched it) that she’s the one in control when it’s the opposite. she’s the child, she was never in control. i mean even bren pointed out that juno, as much as she thinks, doesn’t know how complex adult relationships are. she was warned and made aware of how inappropriate it is for her to show up unannounced without a guardian with her and to hang out ALONE with mark. yet all of this didn’t make her any less prone to grooming. it’s so rare to see someone in a film/tv show who doesn’t “seem” like a potential victim, fall under the manipulation tactics of an adult.

Movies like Juno and The Perks of Being a Walflower are very special. I feel like most of us watched those movies when we were really young, but as we got older we started to pick up on things we never understood and related to them. They're nostalgic and taught me very important lessons. These movies resonated with me even if I don't find them super relatable. And we don't get these kind of movies made anymore, and I'm glad people are still talking about them
even when you’re 18 or just becoming an “adult,” be skeptical of any older person that feels like they’re in a different stage of life than you. That means if you’re just starting college and they have been working a full time job with benefits, why else would they have interest in someone significantly younger? I always have thought to myself for every year of difference there’s literally millions of other people they could form an intimate relationship with. And that number grows exponentially. It’s okay to want to take your time to find people who make you feel safe. Any older person with power over you should not be seeking validation from people that aren’t their own peers :(
Fr. I am about to be 26, worried about electing benefits and my taxes. Tf business do I have dating a person who just graduated high school? Or a person who *just* got the ability to order a martini at a bar? My sister is 20, I have absolutely no desire to be friends with people that age 😂

I have a fonder appreciation for this movie not only bc I’m a mother who’s currently pregnant with her second kid but because of you and you make this movie such a beautiful coming of age comfort movie which I’d say is my comfort pregnancy movie bc I had only seen it a couple times but I too also didn’t like Vanessa at first and first watched this as a teen but now as a 25 year old soon to be mother of two I can appreciate it more and literally the acting, the writing, the actors are just everything. I’ve also always wanted to see little miss sunshine so I’m definitely on the lookout for that next ☀️
back in my hs freshman year, my health teachers showed us Juno during our puberty/teen development unit. it's one of my faves of all time and one of the best 2000s and coming of age movies.

26:47 thank you for making this point, I tried to convey this a few years ago to avoid a situation like this: I had a close friend up until a few years ago. He grew up in a home without stable income, verbally and probably physically abusive, and his father went to prison for something relating to being a p*do (I don't remember details). Kid spent years telling us he didn't wanna be like his dad and we thought we could be a good influence. He, my bf and another close friend all started working at a local pet store that opened- we were maybe 23 when they started there. Kid stayed at the store for a while and we'd all still hang out nightly. One night he said a high school girl he worked with dropped him off after work. Immediately we all were like "hey dude, no. You can get along at work but she's 16 and that's not a boundary you can cross." I even leveled with him when it kept happening, explaining "when you're a teenage girl, theres a strong likelihood that if an older guy pays attention to you, you're gonna develop a crush. It's just natural. She may like your attention and want to be your friend but it's YOUR responsibility to hold the line. Get along at work but being alone or spending time together outside, don't do it, for your or her sakes". Thought we got through to him. Cut to FATHERS DAY WEEKEND 2 years later. Kid had developed epilepsy and we hadn't seen / heard from him in a few days and his mom said he was in the hospital so we thought it was a seizure. I remember laying in bed with my BF when he got the text (I was notably left out of the group lol) "I'm not in the hospital for myself.... my TWO YEAR OLD SON has pneumonia". He not only has a son, it's with the SAME GIRL we told him not even to befriend bc she was too young. And he proceeded to come over and smoke and play video games NIGHTLY FOR TWO YEARS knowing this kid was out there. They'd "reconciled" and he met the child and bonded with him, hence why he suddenly was important enough to tell us about. I thought the other boys were going to kill him. As of now, guy still has an on-off relationship with the kid, has been in and out of court for years, the girls life has been altered for ever, and we do not speak to him.
We're 30/31 now and as someone who grew up with Juno but didn't understand how absolutely dangerous and disgusting Jason bateman's character was here until I was older, I'm so glad we're talking about this shit. So many girls are manipulated and groomed and assaulted by older men like this and it's so scary bc they literally make it seem so innocent to the child when EVERY ADULT can see it. It's despicable
