Having watched only part of your read-thru on Blackacre...
On one hand, a significant amount of the worldbuilding is "I understood that reference." Like, the things it points to as inspirations are fairly blatant and felt kinda "yes, i can simply throw all my favorite grim horror things in a pot and stir, too."
On the other hand, it's also kind of a case of "good artists create, great artists steal" - it's different *enough* that it's not simply one-to-one from the inspirations it lists. There is at least *some* effort put towards making them harmonize, or at least not contradict each other. And I'm willing to accept contradictory information, *a la* Elder Scrolls Deep Lore(tm).

This isn't the first Fate fork to abolish the Fudge Die. ICONs is probably the most famous example (the superhero RPG, not the fantasy Lancer stuck in development hell)

Fate: Core is still one of my favorite systems :)

I wonder if any of these new projects use their own engine.

It's doable, but building your own engine from the ground up means you're spending a lot of time trying to tune that engine to do exactly what you want over taking an existing engine like 3.5, Cain, Opend6, or in this case, Fate and modifying it here and there to make it work without having to reinvent the entire backend. It's the same reason so many game devs just use Unity or Unreal.

I mean, sure the Fate system has its (arguably many) flaws, but to me the rolls outcomes in Fate are so good for storytelling (failure/success with a great cost → success with a minor cost → success → great success) that it's a shame throwing them out for a bland "good→great→cool→supercool→wow→ultracool".
And yeah, the stunts feel so weird, it's like they don't belong in this system.
Otherwise, it's neat to see Fate getting some action! I have a love/hate relationship with it.
