Happy New Year Duke! I'm like you, I love my Rivian and hope for a bright future for the company. As more people learn about the quality of their vehicle and the many benefits of EVs in general, I believe the company will have a bright future, even if it has some challenges currently. And like you, I have every intention of making my next vehcile another Rivian. R3X sounds about right to me. Cheers!
I think Musk saved Rivian by introducing Cybertruck with a very polarizing design. Rivian doesn't need to worry about Cybertruck taking away their market share. This reminds me of a Netflix story: The 1st CEO of Netflix said Blockbuster had a chance to bankrupt Netflix in early 2000 if it kept investing in its streaming business. Instead, the new owner of Blockbuster dropped the streaming business and therefore this gave Netflix a chance to grow its business.
Congrats on the silliest analogy I've ever seen. You realize the R1T came out first, right? You realize Tesla showed up dead last to the pickup party, right? You realize Cybertruck is by far the more technologically advanced between the two, right? lol The Cybertruck came from the very back of the pack to become the best-selling EV pickup and you think that makes them Blockbuster in your analogy? Please. I'm rooting for Rivian, but they aren't a threat to Tesla, silly. Tesla is worth all of the major auto manufacturers COMBINED.
I am thinking along the same line as you are Duke! We own a first Gen R1S and love it, plus I bet on Rivian by buying stock in the company. Love your videos Happy New Year.
I agree about the effect the $7,500 tax credit retraction will be less for Rivian than for its competitors. Even perhaps a little benefit for the next year. However for Rivian as a company to survive it all hinges on the success of the R2, which will be 100% affected by the loss of the tax credit.
I'm itching to put deposit down on their upcoming $45K smaller version of R1S and R1T. We see so many Rivians in the Phoenix valley not to mention last mile Rivian delivery vans. They are just cranking them out quietly without making too much noise, like Toyota. Love Rivian!
We own both the Model Y and Gen 1 R1S quad motor. Both of them are right there depending on what you are looking at. Software, I'll still give Tesla the edge though Rivian is catching up. Hardware design, I'm with Rivian. There are also some subtleties in software where either Rivian or Tesla has the edge. The good thing is that competition is growing which is good for us.
The R2 will be clutch for Rivian moving forward. If they can get it to preform as well as similar cars in that segment and keep the 45k price point, it will be cement their future success. You really can't beat ownership experience, it is the best.
You sound like a brand ambassador for Rivian, glad you enjoy the quality and service. Waiting for the R2 to arrive, they tease these vehicles then its two years before they start producing.
I do think the tax credit may affect R2 sales a little because it is for the mass market seller and does qualify for the tax credit. However, I think the R2 will overcome that. I was happy the R2 qualified for the tax credit and yes, it will hurt a bit and delay me a little in getting the R2, but I will be buying it in 2026 still.
The way this tax credit is structured it hurts resale value for everyone, especially those that are not qualified for it. Plus, they just accelerate depreciation. This is my fourth EV and you can basically just subtract the tax credit amount from the value of the vehicle almost instantly. If the R2 is good enough it won't need a tax credit to attract buyers. Thanks for commenting!
Bought a tesla October 2024. I got the 2025 model y, used my military benefits, referral bonus $2000, $7500 tax credits plus trade in $5000 with $2000 down in got it for 32000 instead of $50000. In GA 100% disabled veterans benefits didn't have to pay $3700 in taxes and fees, etc. But it's now January haven't gotten my plates, they are very slow processing my tags my temporary tags expired yesterday, so now I can't drive the car. Their customer service after paying for the car sucks. Didn't realize it would be such a slow process to register and get my tags. I haven't had to worry about the service maintenance but worry their services sucks their too. Will see how long it will take to get my tags. However, I do enjoy the model Y and charge from home outlet, which is fine by me.
Bailing on my Model X in favor of an R1S, which should be arriving within a week or two, and I'm MUCH more enthusiastic about Rivian going forward, at least as a car company, than Tesla, given where Elon's head is these days. And I'll be taking some gains from our Tesla holdings to shift them to Rivian as well. It may not be as dynamic as Tesla has been, but it at least makes me FEEL better! ;-) So I hope you're right - I'be been thinking along the same lines. Cheers!
You sound like a brand ambassador for Rivian, glad your really impressed by their quality and service. Waiting for the R2 to come out, they tease these vehicles then its two years until production begins
I wish all EVs success as we tackle whatever changes the administration implements. My bigger concern is that we might see a slower rollout of public charging infrastructure. Here in Missouri for example, there is a large gap in reliable fast chargers when traveling on I44. We also need expanded L2 charging at apartment complexes and mulit family dwellings. I'd happily give up my ev tax credit to see more public funding to help eliminate these barriers.
Honestly, I see a big oppertunity with installing these chargering station at large vistor centers along the interstate. People already stop there for bathrooms and food and sleep (in their cars). The government puts them there at their centers, they make some money, you improve the infrastructure, and the spending at these rest stops.
The I-44 Gap is getting better. If we can get a reliable Rolla charger, it will be good. Lots of chargers in Jopin, Springfield (Buckees has two vendors!), and Sullivan.
@ just after I watched this video I discovered they are almost done building a supercharger in St Robert’s so that will be very welcome. The Bucees in Springfield is nice but I actually live near this one so it’s not really needed on my trips. Sullivan is actually my most used DC charger but the Electrify America has had at least 1 out of 4 chargers down since I’ve own EVs. They had 3/4 down most of the holidays! I haven’t tried the Flying Js yet because I’m still using my EA credits
Because of you, I am thinking of purchasing a Rivian R1 T for my 138 mile daily commute in which 80% is highway driving. In your opinion, would the base model be sufficient?
I have the Tesla Cyberbeast. I absolutely love it! Rivian is too new for me to consider them. They look good and are more conventional, but the Cyberbeast is in another league.
Thanks again for sharing. Time effort and talent go into your work. Lori’s comment caught me. People have stopped by as I parked at Costco and innocently asked, “What is it?” My CT is more of a big high performance sedan than anything else, to me.
I don't have any EV but I am open to idea of them especially for local driving. I do like the concept of and EV but unlike you, I am not a "let me have the first edition" of anything. I don't want or need 1000 HP or the ability to kill myself by driving the 1/4 mile in 2.5 seconds. I just want a reliable vehicle that will take me where I want to go. Good luck to you in 2025 with your channel and best wishes to America as we transition from ICE vehicles to EVs.
The Rivian $7500 is already gone for 2025 due to the new battery requirements that they don't meet. The lease money is still there for 2025. Rivian will be fine, they have an excellent product now and for the future.
I would not purchase a Cybertruck over a Rivian. I would buy an ICE truck before the Cybertruck. Plus the R1S is the top seller for Rivian. Tesla doesn't have a real SUV.
Agreed. I do hope they keep the used EV tax credit because I think that is more important. More affluent buys are going to buy an EV regardless of the tax credit but the used EV tax credit could make the difference for lower income buyers that can only afford to shop in the used car space.
I'm wondering if the ride quality will be any good for R2 and R3. I keep hearing mixed reviews on the R1's, with the majority saying they ride rough, and that's with them having air suspension, which the R2 will not.
I love the way my Gen 1 R1T rides. The Gen 1 R1S ride is more firm, but still nice. The Gen 2 is a lot less stiff than the Gen 1 from what I am hearing.
I wish Rivian well, however I haven’t invested with them yet. They are nice vehicles but I would like to see more local support. No way to test drive or check them out in Ryder to make a decision.
CYBERTUCK at 100k outsold all over EV pick up combined. Now they have the 80k version and more importantly the 60k coming “soon” the will be everywhere like Model Y. Speaking of which, I think REFRESH Model Y going to really hurt R2 sales. It’s already number 1 selling car worldwide and now with the refresh having year+ advantage before R2 is released. As always, let’s see how it plays out! Keep up the good work!
Rivian needs to lower the prices on R1S and R1T at some point. With used Rivian's becoming available at significant savings, their market will be shrinking, and since the designs haven't changed (which I'm OK with), many with the disposable incomes to purchase new, will want to try brands with newer-designs.
Never better than Tesla, but certainly they are very nice vehicles. When a Rivian can take you cross country with 6 minutes of human driving, then I would agree with you.
If Tesla had Rivian's styling they would be unstoppable. Also, there is a large part of the market that don't care about self driving. This is why the Honda Prologue EV is selling so well. People just want regular EVs that look like traditional cars.
It probably is better but Rivian made only 50,000 trucks total; less than Ferrarri in 2024; they lost $40,000 per truck. It owes $6 Billion. One must question if they will be financially able to continue. How many will Rivian sell if the federal subsidies are removed and they have to ask customers for an additional $7500; or make it $47,500 lost per vehicle? BEVs don't make much of a work truck; the Rivian weighs 8500 lbs. On TH-cam a couple used an RT to tow a horse trailer across the country on the highway the range was exausted in 2 hours at 60mph the charge of the big battery takes near 2 hours on a fast charger to fully charge; they averaged about 30 mph on the trip, in good weather.
I wish nothing but the best for Rivian, but I disagree. Rivian is not the new kid on the block. It had its moment in the sun. I think the Scout will take the #2 position in 2027 onward
They have to produce a good vehicle first. It looks good, but so did the Fisker Ocean. Its has to perform better than Rivian with a competitive price where Rivian will be producing the R3 and maybe R3 if Scout ever produces a vehicle this decade. They are backed by VW who is experiencing some difficulties which is why I did not include the Rivian/VW partnership.
Now why you go and start this war lol. Rivian has nothing on the Model 3 and S. I’m just saying 😂 Rivians just cost too dang much. I know it’s aiming for upmarket rich folk/ retired folk but what about us mid to late thirties working class millennials with 1-3 kids? Rivian offers nothing compelling from a price perspective. When does the 45k model drop? In love the Rivian styling. I bet they’ll be purchased by VW or Amazon. Most likely Amazon lol
Please let me know your thoughts about Rivian's future in the comment section.
