Why X-WING TMG 1.0 Was THE BEST Miniatures Game

  • No other game has attracted as many new players in such a short a period of time as X-Wing. Why is that? While the popular IP is definitely a big part, there are so many other contributing factors.
    Personally, I think the wargaming community needs X-Wing to be popular, or a game like it.

      None existent, used to be X-wing game nights every weekend around 2015-2016. Could buy a ship at the register, walk to a table and play that new ship right away if you wanted to. Now its just MTG and 40k products, and even then most people exclusively play MTG at the local shop these days.
      Very sad to see, X-Wing was the game that got me into tabletop gaming at 15 and its very nostalgic looking back on those times. Crazy how many people have already forgotten about it already.

    I really enjoyed this video and very much miss the old X-wing. I have a huge collection of x-wing 1.0 but gave up when I heard you needed conversion kits or whatever for 2.0 as I wasn't willing to spend more money to get my already owned models "compatible" with a game that I'd already been playing for a long time. I feel like enough time has passed for me to come back but I am worried that the game has now dropped off and I've missed my chance. You're totally correct in saying that X-Wing 1.0 was the starting piece for many people. It was mine and other games since just haven't grabbed me as much as X-wing did when I first discovered it.

    I know a TON of people, myself included, who found out about and jumped into X-Wing 1.0 about six months before The Force Awakens was set to come out and Star Wars hype was through the roof. I spent a stupid amount of money on ships and still have every one of them. We splurged on deluxe dials and even turned to Etsy to get custom range rulers. I even have an alt art Darth Vader pilot card that I was able to get signed by David Prowse at one of his last convention appearances in the US before his health declined. He asked me what the card was for and I was given my greatest Star Wars memory ever: explaining the X-Wing miniatures game to f**king Darth Vader himself!
    So many people I know stopped buying new minis when 2.0 came out. We weren't about to drop money on conversion kits for so much stuff that we had already spent a lot of money on. I don't think it is a coincidence most game stores around us stopped doing tournaments around this same time. We still break out our 1.0 stuff from time to time. I love the game still.

    Hey I know that guy! The fact that the models were prepainted was what got me in the door. The fact that the shapes were relatively non organic in shape makes them less daunting to paint in my mind. Splitting the player turn into movement and combat phase also made each turn of the game feel intense down to the last. You spend the first half of the turn jockeying for position, and then you start rolling feels a lot more compelling to me than “I go first and nuke that unit off the board, now you get to move whatever you have left.”

    Great video! Great points. Heroscape was my miniatures intro as a child, but X-wing was my gateway into miniatures gaming in college. Seemed to hit at just the right time, and I was able to jump into Armada (crunchier game) armed with confidence. That, of course, eventually led to sinking into full hobby gaming over the pandemic (40k, Middle Earth SBG, Team Yankee, etc.)

    • @CornerCase

      I always thought the guys who played Armada were the real deal. Back then, playing x-wing, other games felt a lot less accessible. Since I made this video, I’ve been thinking a lot about the juggernaut strength of your first love miniatures game. When I think about it, it makes me understand a little better how so many people are stuck in 40K, regardless of what I think might be the state of things.

Tried to get them to play WH40k years ago, when they were 7-8 years old. One was interested enough to buy a 500 pt army. He still has yet to finish painting any of them. I think I would have better luck with X-Wing at that age.

    These are all very good points! The cool looking pre-painted minis are exactly what drew me into this and SW Armada. I just wish I could play this more often, it's just been so hard over the last couple years with the pandemic and when you have a baby at home to take care of. Although I didn't get to play 1.0 too much to tell if it needed fixing, I definitely appreciated the clear point values written on the cards making it easy to get into without needing to consult an app. Once 2.0 was announced, it was a bit annoying and there were still many 1.0 builds I wanted to try (and could probably still do so, who's really stopping us? :)), but was glad for the conversion kits to make things easy. I was just starting to get into 2.0, bought a ton of ships and card expansions, and now so many changes are being introduced with the AMG 2.5 ruleset, it's pretty frustrating so will likely try to stick with the 2.0 squad lists I'd already spent time generating and hopefully find a way to get X-Wing to the table someday soon. 2.5 feels more like some home-brew rules set that would maybe be fun to try but many aspects of it don't seem to make sense to me and seems unbalanced so I can't take it too seriously.

    The unbelievable upgrade cost involved was another reason to say no thanks FFG. Couldn’t justify upgrade packs full of stuff for ships I was never going to buy.
    My only interest in this game was playing ships from episodes 4,5 and 6. Couldn’t care less about the rest of the franchise. For me those movies don’t exist.

    I agree with you. You missed some key points of 1.0 however. It had still had cards with point costs on them , was simpler then 2.0 s wing and beyond. I’d say some of the loss for x wing was 2.0. I know I stayed with 1.0 and their practices haven’t gotten any better and I feel like they strayed too close to catering towards hard core competitive concerns to push tournaments as opposed to the great feeling fun game that got everyone into it in the first place. X wing pretty much died off around me when that happened.
    Kind of leaving me like Vader a sad practitioner of a dead religion.
    Though for my money x wing was an incredible game that if they didn’t burn it down with change for changes sake would have most likely still stayed strong around me to this day.

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL that Vader line killed me 😂. Yeah it’s kindof a difficult subject, but I do wonder if trying to cater directly to the competitive gamer is a trap. Like GW did that with 9th, and FFG did that with 2.0, and both instances created a difficult on-ramp experience into the game. I think my current POV is that maybe design for competitive should somehow be isolated from on-ramp experience.

    1.0 was the best. The golden age was definitely 2013-2014 though, when hard counters were not the only thing you needed to take to tournaments. There was room outside of the meta to take something that would surprise the netdecking WAACs. It felt like skill could have an outcome on games, even when dice went cold.

    2.0 only built upon the positives from 1.0. More lists and factions are viable than ever before. There are 7 factions now which may seem overwhelming, but you can truly just pick your favorite faction from the movies or books and you will find a list that is competitive.

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I am not anti-2.0. I think 2.0 is for a different consumer. I think 1.0 captured an elegance, a magic if you will. I think a lot of people fell in love with that. I think 2.0 was probably the natural evolution to improve the game over time, but I think having to pick between old fans and long term development is a tough spot to be in. In that regard, perhaps X-Wing is a victim of its own success.

    • @FeralWarpwolf
      @FeralWarpwolf ปีที่แล้ว +3

      2.0 was an improvement and streamlining of the overall rules' system, all right, but also made the core rules' catalogue much more complex for casual gamers to start with - while it did improve the game for (veteran) tournament players. Apart from the superior Turret rules of 2.0 I think 1.0 is the better system for _beginners_ - who play outside of a tournament setting, though - as the core game rules are comparatively simple and most of its design flaws can be mitigated by adding more gear cards to the lacking model (using house rules), thus making it very customizable. Heck, you can even transfer the 2.0 Turret rules perfectly fine into 1.0 and call it a day, if you want to.

    Played xwing, was the local TO. Have also played 40k, armada, legion, dabbled in bolt action and guildball amongst others. 1.0 was by a country mile the better rules set for us old timers. We also didn’t appreciate the whole “we changed editions, you now have to buy the updated stuff to participate in events” deal. It stunk of FF trying to be GW. 2.0 has effectively killed what used to be a community of 50+ players in my area. Now no store in my county that I’m aware of can move any of the product.

    You forgot one thing, the price. It's a lot harder to get into X-wing nowadays because the cost of the models has almost more than doubled since the game first released.
    I got into X-wing when it first came out in 2012. At first I was skeptical of the gameplay because the previous Star Wars mini game produced by Wotc was hot garbage. The rules in the Wotc game were braindead simple designed for 8 year olds. But it turned out the rules for X-wing were initially very well thought out and had the tactical complexity that my gamer mind was starving for.
    The models in the Wotc game were repurposed micromachines molds that were well past their prime with the X-wings that had lasers pointing in more directions than the bristles on my drybrush and Tie fighters that had solar panels as straight as a potato chip. Also the models in the Wotc game were not properly scaled to each other so you had star destroyers only slightly larger than the snub fighters. Not only are the sculpts in X-wing top notch, all the basic ships in X-wing are properly scaled to each other at 1/285th scale. So If the game dies, I can still use them in dioramas.
