    I HAVE A PERMANENT FIXED FOR THIS PROBLEM. I bought my 92 on January 1, 1992, and still have it. Just put an antique tag on it and the mileage as of today is 158k. It's been garage kept for 24 of the 30 years I've owned it. I had the same problem in 2004 and had the 80 towed back to the dealer 3 different times. They never did figure out the problem because it would always start for them after it sat and cooled down. After much research I found a mechanic online who identified the problem and said it was the EFI relay overheating. After much thought I ran 4 wires using the slip-on type of connector (one for each connector on the relay) from the fuse box through the fire wall and into the cab. Now my EFI relay is located under the dashboard near the emergency brake pedal, and I haven't had a problem with it since. I keep an extra relay in the glove box just in case but have never had to use it.

    This happened to me. A very temporary fix if a new relay is not available is to jump the 2 & 4 pins with a wire. This will start it right up. Not sure if its a good idea to leave it jumped, but It successfully got me home without a new relay and without any problems.

    Hi so This would happen to me a lot and I ended up finding an auto electrician. He relocated my EFI relay and put a heavy duty one. Haven't had that issue ever since. Now I just have a bunch of spare relays lol. If it happens often I'd recommend relocating and getting that heavy duty one. You won't regret it. Oh and it only cost me about $140 to do that work.

    Love your vids man! Mine went out last month after 6 years of owning my 92 as my daily driver. Jon Held also talked about “upgrading” the EFI relay to one from a newer Camry IIRC, bc it’s a more robust one, so that’s what I went with. Keep up the good work man! Your vid’s have given me lots of ideas of things I still need to do to mine.

      @@LNDCRUZIN I can't find the post where Jon Held was explaining it, but the PN is 28300-16010. It's way more expensive than what originally came on our FJ80s, but supposed to be less prone to overheating.

    One other less common issue is the coil pack (left side of the 3FE, near the cruise control unit); Had mine die on the highway after a rainy off-road day in Mojave. Check your connections and look for any cracks or deterioration on the shell. They're supposed to be good for the life of the vehicle but not sure if 260k+ miles was in the spec. Cost about $40 for the part at Autozone and about 10 min to replace. The tow was a bit more...

    Sitting in a hotel room in Borneo with a 80 Series that won't start towed to the shop. This sounds like it might be the solution, as the truck started ok when cool worse when hot, then when super hot, nope, not at all and no check engine light. I'll update tomorrow when I hear more.
    Toughest truck ever - two years ago, crossed four massive flood zones, waves over the hood, 1 Kilometer each crossing, in between zones (bit higher ground) let the truck sit still and run with the hood open to cook off all the water etc,
    After all the zones, let the old people out I was carrying across and drove 60K back to the city no problem. - AB @ Sea Dragon Adventures Borneo

    I have a 94 land cruiser. I accidentally jumped the +b on the diagnostic port when removing a paper clip after getting a code. I was almost certain that i blew a fuse related to the ignition. But I have tested all the fuses but i haven’t been able to test the efi relay since I don’t have the right tool. Do you think it’s possible I fried the efi relay. The engine is cracking just like yours on the video but won’t start.

    • @thedangerson
      @thedangerson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can test the EFI relay with a multimeter. Pins 1 and 3 should have continuity, and pins 2 and 4 should not have continuity. To test it, put 12v to pin 1 (+) and 3 (-) and you should hear the relay click. At that point, you can then check the continuity between 2 and 4 which should be closed.

      @@thedangerson thanks for the info for future reference. I ended up solving the issue. I ended pulling each fuse one by one and found the fuse that blew out. Easy replacement! Thanks again. I hope this helps other owners in the future

      Just bought a 91 started and worked and drove perfect 1/2 the drive home. Stopped for gas and wouldn’t start. I let it cool and it started. Got home and it wouldn’t start again. Was looking into fuel damper and fuel pressure relay. I’ll check this first although I do remember seeing the CEL on while trying to start it and it was on shortly after I got it running again but then went off. Is the no CEL a dead giveaway because if so I guess mine is not this relay? Thanks so stoked I found your channel 🤙
