My word! That song is amazing! Only having dipped my toe into the Genesis library, this is like finding a whole new genre of music to listen to. Thank you!!!!
Knew the song had to be metal squadron! The brutal challenge of that stage will really test players, but the music hits so hard you’re not giving up unless you run out of credits!
Someone tell me there's a version of that song with real instruments. This song is outstanding, but with real guitars and drums I'm sure it would be even more mind blowing. Like a free crate of bananas and a free copy of Rocket Knight Adventures in lieu of nothing kind of mind blowing.
@@chaospoethere certainly is, and it’s bloody good. Search SSH - Lightning Strikes Again / Metal Squad. But for what it’s worth, that Genesis recording is terrible and there are much nicer sounding recordings of the original track to enjoy too.

Agreed! Absolute classic. For whatever reason it seemed like ea sports games ran better on the genesis compared to snes, and that was generally not the case
The assorted sports games on the Genesis were a HUGE part of it at the time and it feels weird to stop and say "wait, why doesn't anybody mention those" and the reasons are basically that they never stopped making sports games and improving on sports games, and there were SO MANY good ones in the era. I just wanted to let you know how much your videos have meant to me lately. I found your videos at the absolute perfect time, and they have been some of the most entertaining I’ve seen in so long. Thank you so much for the videos :)
The road rash series (especially 1&2) is one that I love playing - it never gets old and is so much fun beating up the other bikers and often hilarious at the same time! (Streets of rage series is the other obvious one, but I'm sure lots will mention it!)
One of my all time favorite Genesis games, maybe my number one, was a game called Burning Force. It was a Space Harrier clone made by Namco in 1989. It was an arcade game that found a home on Genesis and was a lot of fun. On top of that, the soundtrack was amazing.
Absolutely love your channel mate. Your subtle (hilarious, smart) humour, coupled with in-depth gaming knowledge is outstanding. We all appreciate all the hard work you put in to making these videos. Cheers mate.
1985 to 1995 will always be the great golden age of video games for me. whatever console you chose would serve up a great library of games to play, though you will only find a horror beatem up on the genesis/ megadrive in splatterhouse 3.
Hmm... if I had to pick one game to highlight it'd be Streets of Rage 2. Hands down my favorite beat em up of the era and title in the original series.
Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, the thunderforces, street fighter 2, beyond oasis, comix zone and Gunstar Heroes are the timeless classics that I could pick up at any time and have a blast playing. Always good in my opinion 🤘
Love the video! You have such a great sense of humor and presentation. I like the shots of you playing a game with just the screen and your hands working the controller. Makes me want to play some of those classics! I really like Alex Kidd and X-men 2 Clone Wars, but of course Sonic and the gang is always a classic
You won me over, buddy. Seen a few vids but they just keep getting better. I subbed, damnit! Pronouncing Ristar correctly and the long arms bit. Good stuff.
Somehow despite being on the Sega side of the console wars I never had even heard of Lightning/Thunder Force. Now it's a mainstay in "top games" videos like this
Yeah, it definitely wasn't as well-known as it should've been back in the day. Probably deserved to be one of the games "everyone had" for the Genesis back then.
I've been beating games on the Sega Genesis Mini 1 & 2 consoles recently, and being a GameCube/Wii kid, I came to really appreciate what it had to offer back in the day. Dynamite Headdy is one of the most artistically creative games ever, Streets of Rage 2 is beat-em-up perfection, and the Sonic games will have a special place in my heart (yes, even 3D Blast with its wacky controls). I also have a small collection of original Genesis games, so finally I'd like to recommend Animaniacs and Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention. As a fan of both shows, these games are genuinely fun to play, an uncommon thing back then for licensed titles. 😅
I have the Sonic collections on he Nintendo GameCube and they have many wonderful Sonic and other Sega games on them. I love these classic Sega games. Cool video. ^_^
My always return to game is Elemental Master. Just the music of the stage select screen immediately takes me back to my childhood days. Thanks for the great video. Best regards.
Loving the Nomad gameplay. SEGA was truly ahead when it came to hardware. The Genesis has some amazing games to it's name. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Streets of Rage 2, Castle of Illusion, Earthworm Jim, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Revenge of Shinobi, Castlevania Bloodlines, Lightening Force, Ristar, Comix Zone, Shining Force 2, Crusaider of Centy, Elemental Master, Mutant League Football, Phantasy Star 4, Rocket Knight Adventures, Gunstar Heroes. I could keep on going. That's not even scratching the surface. I personally factor in the Sega CD and 32x libraries when discussing the Genesis so that makes it even more amazing. Any console that lets you play Snatcher is an automatic win in my book.
Awesome vid, there are so many classics on the Genesis. Thunder Force IV and Shinobi III are my favorites from your original list. A few others I think will always be fun are ESWAT, Gaiares, Ranger-X, and Toe Jam & Earl (especially w/2-players).
I've loved Shinobi 3 since it came out, but I hadn't played it for a long time until a couple years ago. I started speed running it and it's quickly become one of my favorite retro games. It brought a smile to my face when you mentioned it, since most people put Revenge of Shinobi ahead of it (which is also great)
I remember being overwhelmed with possibility of what games I didn't know about when I had a sega and nintendo as my 2 systems when I was younger. I could never believe going to the rental shop and picking out games.
Seeing the nomad with the Sonic and knuckles cartridge and then the Sonic 2 plugged in. It kind of looks like the handheld version of the Tower of power
You're a good egg Bird, for accommodating people's various pronunciations of Ristar. You're also a correct egg, in understanding that it's always and only been "Rye-star" 😎👌
I love the way you shoot these videos and what u do with the lighting. Just discovered this channel and will be looking forward to more genesis videos! Truly entertaining retro content, thanks.
Great top 5! "Gunstar DDR" is hilarious! I think mine would be Sonic 2, M.U.S.H.A., Herzog Zwei, Castle of Illusion and Ghostbusters, but there are SOOOO many more those could replace (Contra Hard Corps, Beyond Oasis, Castlevania Bloodlines, etc.). :)
Great video! Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic 2, and Ristar were all childhood favorites of mine. Also, apparently Sonic was originally going to be a rabbit with stretchy ears much akin to Ristar's stretchy arms. I'm glad Sega brought the idea back with Ristar, but it is almost criminal we never got a Ristar 2! One of my personal favorites on the Genesis was Castlevania Bloodlines. I honestly love everything about it. The gameplay, graphics, music, and just general atmosphere. I can still go back to this game years later and enjoy it.
I actually think Ristar could translate really well to a 3D platformer in the hands of the right developer. Of course, I would certainly take another 2D iteration as well :)
@@RetroBirdGaming Yeah, I could definitely see it translating quite well into a 3D environment, too! Swinging around in 3D could be quite fun! There was Ristar on Game Gear which actually has a few different levels and bosses from its Genesis counterpart. It isn't quite as good as the Genesis version, but it is still more Ristar to enjoy!
Excellent selection of games, Retrobird. All of them are killer. Of course, like any good console, there's many more than just five games that will always be fun, so I hope to see another video in the future that features some of them.
Oh man my buddy and I clocked in a lot of hours on Shinobi 3. Also we played Lightening Force did not know it was a part of a series for Thunder Force being the 4th installment! Crazy! Because of you I ordered a Rocket Night Adventures case & booklet for my copy of the game! Thanks for the bird seeds for that game by the way! That game gets my scratch & sniff sticker! PS- My scratch & sniff stickers are bananas! But it's because of Super Monkey Ball. Sorry got off course from Sega games.
The Genesis game that is still completely unique to this day is Toe Jam and Earl. First of all it just Oozes early 90's vibes and is a literal time capsule for pop culture of that era. In addition to that, the video game industry really hasn't made anything like Toe Jam and Earl since (minus the adequate remake of the game itself AKA Back in the Groove). Sure, I guess it's kind of a rogue-like, and there are modern rogue-likes out there. But Toe Jam and Earl is really its own genre and hasn't really been replicated. It's still a blast to pop in the game and play it today.
These are my picks of "Sega Mega Drive/Genesis" games that will always hold up and always be fun to get back too; Quackshot starring Donald Duck Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse Aladdin Spider-Man vs. the Kingpin The Punisher Streets of Rage 1+2 Golden Axe Batman 89 Altared Beast Ristar Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3 Michael Jackson's Moonwalker Dick Tracy NHL 94 Mutant League Football Mutant League Hockey Eternal Champions RoboCop versus The Terminator Mega Bomberman
I’m just getting into retro collecting and just obtained a 27” Samsung CRT with all the connections from RF to component and purchased an NES. My next console is going to be the Genesis as I’m getting my favorite consoles in release order. The first two games I’ll be getting to go with that will be Sonic cause… DUH and, having watched maybe 88% of the videos on this channel now, Rocket Knight Adventures. The footage in the videos looks so fun and your undying passion for this game in most of the videos I’ve seen has me so excited to try it.
I think it's a blast to play. Most people agree, but I do occasionally run into comments from people saying they didn't like it. In any case, I hope you have a great time getting into retro gaming :)
Shadow Dancer all the way! Great sound track, beautiful visuals, and the dog mechanics, make it my favorite Shinobi game, and probably my favorite Genesis game.
Holding i think a+start opens the options so you can set it to hardest. It was the only genny game i had for so long i'd stretch it out by staying arnold-buffed for as long as it'd let me then then pick up the transformation orb. Still holds up i think. I'll play it and golden axe back to back when i ever feel like having a system 16 nostalgia session.
Outside of Sonic and Streets of Rage, I'd add Phantasy Star IV to that list of Genesis games that will always be fun. I would say it's at least as good as the Final Fantasy games on SNES, if not better
MUSHA is in my opinion the best shmup ever, and it also has one of the best soundtracks ever. I say this without any nostalgia, by the way; I first played the game this year and was blown away by it. It's a Mega Drive gem
Of all consoles, somehow I feel the Mega Drive to be the easiest to just choose a game and start playing right away. I agree about Shinobi III, and elevate it to being one of the 16-bit masterpieces ever conceived, it's brilliant.
@@RetroBirdGaming @RetroBirdGaming I tried some nso super nintendo and genesis games today(gunstar heroes, ristar, castlevania bloodlines, contra hard corps, super ghouls and ghosts) Got my butt absolutely whooped but I was able to appreciate them more after watching your videos! Hoping to find one that clicks for me soon!
@@scrilla4047 If it makes you feel any better, when we old people used to play them as kids, the idea that you might beat one of them was something you'd work your way up to, and also a bit of an achievement. It's okay if you find them hard - sometimes the best way to approach old games is to say "I've got an hour to kill, let's play something that will occupy that time" and not worry about winning. But as an aside - DO read the manuals. At least in the 16-bit era storage space was at a premium, so tutorials levels and even the story didn't always make it onto the cartridge. The manuals really add a lot to the experience. Sometimes you'll be totally stuck in an old game and you don't see any way forward, then you read the manual and go "Oh! I didn't know I could do THAT."
@@mausmalone thanks for the advice! I'm no stranger to hard video games, such as dark souls and cup head. I think with a little extra game knowledge I'd really enjoy some of these titles! I'm going to read the manual for super ghouls and ghosts. I can get the farthest in that game so far and I like the aesthetic. Thanks again!
I thought your ending tune was something you had made up. I Had no idea it was an actual 80s tune until Minty used it for his Flight of the Navigator video. I so closely associate it with you, that at first I thought I clicked on one of your videos accidently. Regardless, great music, excellent episode!
Yeah, the track itself is from the TH-cam Free library because I wanted to make sure my videos didn't get flagged. Because it is in every video, I didn't want to mess around and needed a sure bet. The singing is done by my friend. So, definitely shouldn't be expecting to hear that part on other people's videos haha.
from gunstar heroes into dance dance revolution, now there's a segue I never imagined I would see, LMAO! I don't know if I'm ready for that mashup, though. Gunstar IS probably my favorite genesis game ever though, from the moment you press start you get the high energy soundtrack and a couple choices to make then thrown into the game proper. then it just throws everything and the kitchen sink at you and it's up to you to survive!
The extended outro (that will be its own video) is coming at some point. My friend who sings it has been on tour a lot with his band though. Soon as he has a chance he's pumped to do it.
Myself I grew up on quite a different line of mega drive games. I have love for Valis III, Shadow Blasters, and Demon Hunter Yohko and Arcus Odyssey, seemingly B-tier games.

An excellent video as always! You've sold me on giving these a try, and as mentioned, a game with an amazing soundtrack will always be a draw.
Buckle up for Thunder force 4 then lol 😂
actually love your humor. it's not laugh out loud to me, but they're good bits that just stick in my head.
I'm a young retro gamer. God bless!
I just got a classiq 3 and it’s my first time playing genesis games. I’m loving this! Also beavis and butthead 😅
Great sense of humour and great video, gotta love the classics...
That is the best intro you ever did. When you looked into the mirror I lost it.
Commenting for the algorithm. :-) I never had a Genesis, and I was so jealous of all my friends who had one.
Of all consoles, somehow I feel the Mega Drive to be the easiest to just choose a game and start playing right away. I agree about Shinobi III, and elevate it to being one of the 16-bit masterpieces ever conceived, it's brilliant.
Is it weird if I enjoy this channel so much and never really been a retro gamer?
Everyone is welcome here :)
My favorite Genesis shooter with a great soundtrack will probably always be Wings of Wor.
I beat Shinobi 3 without knowing you could block. What you said about it was on point 😂
Wow, that Nomad is spotless
For me: Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Gunstar Heroes, Brian Lara/Shane Warne Cricket 96 and Aladdin.
Good choices, good content, good presentation, good job :)
I’m sad McDonald’s Treasure Land Adventure didn’t make the cut. I mean come on, you got Ronald McDonald and Treasure.
I agree with Sonic but my personal favorites will always be Boogerman and Herzog Zewi
First time seeing one of your videos. I spit out my drink during your ddr over the shoulder look back moment 😂😂😂
Welcome to the channel! Glad to have you here :)
Dito, Rocket Knight Adventures just now playing it. Five out of Five Bananas! Thanks Retro Bird!
If I ever make a moving company then I'll call it The Lightening Force!! -- "Let us Lighten your Load!!" Well... I'll work on the slogan later...
Work on the slogan for sure but that's a solid idea!
@@RetroBirdGaming 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was waiting for the random sparkster intrusion. I love rocket knight ever since I got it about 6 months ago. One of my favorites on the console
Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit is underrated and forgotten, until Greek Critique recently did a video on it
I always have sort of a soft spot for the old genesis. It was the console I first started getting into playing games on
Wonder boy in Monster world. That game was so fun!
from gunstar heroes into dance dance revolution, now there's a segue I never imagined I would see, LMAO!
Good choices buddy! Id also add Mega Turrican, MUSHA, Streets of rage 2, castlevania bloodlines, and mcdonalds treasureland adventure for my 10
Great job in the video, man! That dance scene always cracks me up, when you turn around lol Did you ever do that music video?
The extended outro (that will be its own video) is coming at some point. My friend who sings it has been on tour a lot with his band though. Soon as he has a chance he's pumped to do it.
@@RetroBirdGaming Awesome!
The dance dance revolution skit had me in tears 😂😂😂😂
Myself I grew up on quite a different line of mega drive games. I have love for Valis III, Shadow Blasters, and Demon Hunter Yohko and Arcus Odyssey, seemingly B-tier games.
Okay I wasn't interested in Thunder Force IV but you're right this music is nuts.
