Knew the song had to be metal squadron! The brutal challenge of that stage will really test players, but the music hits so hard you’re not giving up unless you run out of credits!
Someone tell me there's a version of that song with real instruments. This song is outstanding, but with real guitars and drums I'm sure it would be even more mind blowing. Like a free crate of bananas and a free copy of Rocket Knight Adventures in lieu of nothing kind of mind blowing.

But for what it’s worth, that Genesis recording is terrible and there are much nicer sounding recordings of the original track to enjoy too.
Streets of rage series, 2 in particular are still great beat em ups. And those soundtracks are timeless

NHL 95 on Genesis will never stop being fun. Not really a hockey fan and I don't play other hockey games but that game is such a blast.
Agreed! Absolute classic. For whatever reason it seemed like ea sports games ran better on the genesis compared to snes, and that was generally not the case
The assorted sports games on the Genesis were a HUGE part of it at the time and it feels weird to stop and say "wait, why doesn't anybody mention those" and the reasons are basically that they never stopped making sports games and improving on sports games, and there were SO MANY good ones in the era. There are 7 Madden games on the Genesis so even if you really loved Madden as a kid - which one? So, yeah, Genesis sports games are sometimes victims of their own success when it comes to lists like this.
hell yeah the genesis hockey games were alot of fun. being able to create your own character and put them on your team was really cool
I got Rocket Knight Adventures because of this channel, and I’m so glad I did. Thank you. One of my favorite games for the Genesis now.

The road rash series (especially 1&2) is one that I love playing - it never gets old and is so much fun beating up the other bikers and often hilarious at the same time!
(Streets of rage series is the other obvious one, but I'm sure lots will mention it!)

imo, comix zone will always been fun to play. the writing and art style continue to set it apart nearly 30 years later.
One of my all time favorite Genesis games, maybe my number one, was a game called Burning Force. It was a Space Harrier clone made by Namco in 1989. It was an arcade game that found a home on Genesis and was a lot of fun. On top of that, the soundtrack was amazing.
1985 to 1995 will always be the great golden age of video games for me. whatever console you chose would serve up a great library of games to play, though you will only find a horror beatem up on the genesis/ megadrive in splatterhouse 3.

Hmm... if I had to pick one game to highlight it'd be Streets of Rage 2. Hands down my favorite beat em up of the era and title in the original series.
I’ve had some pretty lengthy play sessions of Gunstar Heroes where my eyes dried out from lack of blinking.
F-Zero GX also has that effect.

Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, the thunderforces, street fighter 2, beyond oasis, comix zone and Gunstar Heroes are the timeless classics that I could pick up at any time and have a blast playing. Always good in my opinion 🤘

I really like Alex Kidd and X-men 2 Clone Wars, but of course Sonic and the gang is always a classic

Quackshot and Castle of Illusion are two Genesis games that will never get old for me.
I have spent so much time playing Gunstar Heroes as a kid
I've been beating games on the Sega Genesis Mini 1 & 2 consoles recently, and being a GameCube/Wii kid, I came to really appreciate what it had to offer back in the day. Dynamite Headdy is one of the most artistically creative games ever, Streets of Rage 2 is beat-em-up perfection, and the Sonic games will have a special place in my heart (yes, even 3D Blast with its wacky controls). I also have a small collection of original Genesis games, so finally I'd like to recommend Animaniacs and Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention. As a fan of both shows, these games are genuinely fun to play, an uncommon thing back then for licensed titles. 😅

You won me over, buddy. Seen a few vids but they just keep getting better. I subbed, damnit! Pronouncing Ristar correctly and the long arms bit. Good stuff.
Loving the Nomad gameplay. SEGA was truly ahead when it came to hardware. The Genesis has some amazing games to it's name. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Streets of Rage 2, Castle of Illusion, Earthworm Jim, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Revenge of Shinobi, Castlevania Bloodlines, Lightening Force, Ristar, Comix Zone, Shining Force 2, Crusaider of Centy, Elemental Master, Mutant League Football, Phantasy Star 4, Rocket Knight Adventures, Gunstar Heroes. I could keep on going. That's not even scratching the surface. I personally factor in the Sega CD and 32x libraries when discussing the Genesis so that makes it even more amazing. Any console that lets you play Snatcher is an automatic win in my book.

Hyperstone Heist! I'm also one of those weirdos who prefers Sonic 1's design to 2's. the game seemed more focused on exploration vs speed run.
Those are all solid picks. Streets of Rage is another great one too.
Somehow despite being on the Sega side of the console wars I never had even heard of Lightning/Thunder Force. Now it's a mainstay in "top games" videos like this
Yeah, it definitely wasn't as well-known as it should've been back in the day. Probably deserved to be one of the games "everyone had" for the Genesis back then.
As someone who struggles with attention the fast paced games with shortish levels that squeeze a lot of action/skill into short periods are gold

I strongly disagree, but it's okay if you enjoy the game. You've played it in the last 30 years right?
The thing is that it is so short that I almost always don't mind spending a quick 5-15 minutes on it.
Holding i think a+start opens the options so you can set it to hardest. It was the only genny game i had for so long i'd stretch it out by staying arnold-buffed for as long as it'd let me then then pick up the transformation orb. Still holds up i think. I'll play it and golden axe back to back when i ever feel like having a system 16 nostalgia session.
For me: Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Gunstar Heroes, Brian Lara/Shane Warne Cricket 96 and Aladdin.
Seeing the nomad with the Sonic and knuckles cartridge and then the Sonic 2 plugged in. It kind of looks like the handheld version of the Tower of power

I remember being overwhelmed with possibility of what games I didn't know about when I had a sega and nintendo as my 2 systems when I was younger. I could never believe going to the rental shop and picking out games.

The Genesis game that is still completely unique to this day is Toe Jam and Earl. First of all it just Oozes early 90's vibes and is a literal time capsule for pop culture of that era. In addition to that, the video game industry really hasn't made anything like Toe Jam and Earl since (minus the adequate remake of the game itself AKA Back in the Groove). Sure, I guess it's kind of a rogue-like, and there are modern rogue-likes out there. But Toe Jam and Earl is really its own genre and hasn't really been replicated. It's still a blast to pop in the game and play it today.
That game is especially great to play with a friend!

Great top 5! "Gunstar DDR" is hilarious! I think mine would be Sonic 2, M.U.S.H.A., Herzog Zwei, Castle of Illusion and Ghostbusters, but there are SOOOO many more those could replace (Contra Hard Corps, Beyond Oasis, Castlevania Bloodlines, etc.). :)

I've loved Shinobi 3 since it came out, but I hadn't played it for a long time until a couple years ago. I started speed running it and it's quickly become one of my favorite retro games. It brought a smile to my face when you mentioned it, since most people put Revenge of Shinobi ahead of it (which is also great)
Excellent selection of games, Retrobird. All of them are killer. Of course, like any good console, there's many more than just five games that will always be fun, so I hope to see another video in the future that features some of them.

Awesome vid, there are so many classics on the Genesis. Thunder Force IV and Shinobi III are my favorites from your original list. A few others I think will always be fun are ESWAT, Gaiares, Ranger-X, and Toe Jam & Earl (especially w/2-players).

Some of my faves....Pirates Gold, Shining Force, Skitchin, Road Rash 1 and 2, MK2, General Chaos, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Rampart, Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Boogerman, and Splatterhouse.
Outside of Sonic and Streets of Rage, I'd add Phantasy Star IV to that list of Genesis games that will always be fun. I would say it's at least as good as the Final Fantasy games on SNES, if not better

DDR segment was a very welcome surprise!
Sonic 2, Bassmaster Classic Pro Edition, PGA Tour Golf 2 and its companion PGA European Tour, and Winter Olympics. Back in the days when my dad was still into gaming, and we and my sister would often play on Friday and Saturday evenings since it wasn't a school night.
from gunstar heroes into dance dance revolution, now there's a segue I never imagined I would see, LMAO! I don't know if I'm ready for that mashup, though. Gunstar IS probably my favorite genesis game ever though, from the moment you press start you get the high energy soundtrack and a couple choices to make then thrown into the game proper. then it just throws everything and the kitchen sink at you and it's up to you to survive!
Some of my favorites to this day are, Grind Stormer, Truxton, Castelvania Bloodlines, Ranger X, X-Men, and Shadowrun.
16 but era was just about fun being someone that has live through every console gen I would say 16 but era was the golden age of gaming

Monster World IV, baby. Once a Japanese exclusive, an official English release was finally made available on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, and can still be found in Wonder Boy collections on newer consoles. It's a 2D platformer, but the storytelling and dungeons are similar to classic Zelda, and I'd argue it's as good as A Link to the Past. Really great puzzles, spritework, charm and atmosphere. One of the console's best, but often overlooked by fans outside of Japan. You can skip the "Asha in Monster World" remake, though.

I got to play Shinobi 3 for the first time via the Switch and I did not realize I could sprint or do other moves for the longest time >.> I eventually beat it! A great game, but I think an OG controller would have improved the experience.

Yeah, the track itself is from the TH-cam Free library because I wanted to make sure my videos didn't get flagged. Because it is in every video, I didn't want to mess around and needed a sure bet. The singing is done by my friend. So, definitely shouldn't be expecting to hear that part on other people's videos haha.
