Great and entertaining video as always! But you forgot one option. Playing Neo Geo CD with an SD Card Mod. This makes the loading 3 times faster. So with that you can collect the physical games but play it from an SD card. A way to play that I use with Saturn, Dreamcast and PS1 for some time now and I love it. Specially when friends come over and you can quickly change a game.

    Quick Little Story For Ya™
Back in the NEO GEO heyday... maybe 92-93? I got a major talkin' to from my parents because my neighborhood buddy got a NEO GEO after his parents got divorced and were showering him with gifts trying to win custody.
... Of course I didn't understand the complexity of it at the time and just asked my parents "If you guys ever get divorced, can I have a NEO GEO?". They said no.
20ish years later, they got divorced right as I finished college.
They never got me a NEO GEO.

    • @remakeyourself
      @remakeyourself 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oh and also - I have a bunch of the NEO GEO home console thingies. The mini arcade cab you showed (the really tiny one), the Arcade Stick Pro, and the NEO GEO X which was made by a 3rd party and most hardcore collectors hate, but I think it's awesome because of the way it is a very slick handheld which docks into a mock AES. Basically the Switch 15 years before we got the Switch.
For those interested: The Arcade Stick Pro is the way to go. It's $129, but set a camelcamelcamel watch because it drops to 105 almost monthly. Comes with 20 games and a full-size arcade stick that can be used on almost any other system/PC as a controller, but is a full self-contained platform with a nice interface.
PLUS if you register the serial number (which CAN be done if you buy it used), you get a little download for 20 MORE games that can go in the SD slot
PLUS PLUS it's been fully jailbroken so you can play any game you have a ROM for.
PLUS PLUS PLUS the Arcade Stick Pro is fully compatible with all of the official NEO GEO peripherals released for all the mini consoles, so you can use a NEO GEO CD controller on the Arcade Stick Pro.
Wow. I just typed more about the NEO GEO in 5 minutes than I did in probably the past 5 years. Banana.

When the AES system launched I pulled out my trusty Amex and took it home. I believe I bought it from Electronics Boutique. I remember the games being pretty hard and was disappointed when things got busy onscreen it was accompanied by significant slowdown.
I remember games like The Super Spy, Magician Lord, Nam 75 and more. I sold it after owning it for about six months. I wish I still had it in my collection. I did love the massive controllers. You're welcome Bird. A pleasure to do so for you bro. 8^)
Ah, so you enjoy a good game of Bust-A-Move. A superb choice for sure Bird. I love the game and like to whistle the music from the game when I was a boy even now when I have the game on my mind. 8^)
As for me, the game that will always be Number 1 will be Magician Lord. It was the first Neo-Geo title that I ever played in 1990. The first time I played on the Neo-Geo MVS was at a local Dairy Queen on Rt. 4 in Paramus, New Jersey. Me and the family were having our Sunday afternoon lunch when a video game distributors truck was starting to roll off a "Big Red" for 4 slot unit into the entrance to the restaurant. At first, I was fascinated by the technology from the description by the store manager explaining that you can play up to 4 titles by simply pressing the white button on top of the joystick. That was mind blowing for me at he time.
Once the MVS was ready to be played, Magician Lord was the first choice for me to do so....Man! I must've spent $10 Dollars in quarters barely defeating level 1 in the game. It was the most challenging for me at the time. But, it made me continue on because it was just so entertaining to play. Everything about Magician Lord was perfect for me. Since that day forward, I was a Neo-Geo buff. 8^)
Thank you as always for allowing me to share your material Bird. Glad to share a brief history of the Neo-Geo in my life and awesome to read yours as well bro. Keep up the great work and looking forward on seeing more from you soon my good man. 8^)

Just started an MVS collection this year. Got a couple bootlegs but if they play fine they play fine. Neo Geo had a stranglehold on the Chinese market so if you can find the right seller you can get started with an MVS collection for about $150 (MVS board, Supergun, KOF 98, cables, and a controller/controller adapter). There's also the PolyGame Master, a Taiwanese competitor to the Neo Geo that had some fantastic games like Demon Front (a Metal Slug competitor) and even some Cave shmups like Espagluda and DoDonPachi (DoDonpachi II, a game for the system, was not made by Cave but was made under license and is what got Cave to stay in the arcade business). PolyGame Master is about the same price as an MVS, and the games range from $30-120. Since it uses the same Jamma connector (and has a shell), it's already basically consolized.

I'm a military kid and my parents were stationed in England. Our on base arcade got an SF2 cabinet and it was impossible to get on it as people had quarters lined up for days (as was the fashion back then). Sad and dejected, I made my way to the on base bowling alley (my parents were air force if you couldn't tell) and saw a new machine in the back corner. Neo Geo. Fatal Fury 2 was loaded in it and it instantly caught my eye. I fell in love with this game and have been an SNK fanboy ever since. When people caught on that they couldn't get on the SF2 machine either, they'd make their way to the bowling alley, where I would destroy all that challenged me. When I got old enough, got a real job and made my first real money, the first thing I did was buy a Neo Geo off ebay and Fatal Fury Special. Still have both and picked up a Neo SD Pro. Fatal Fury 2 and Special will always have a special place in my heart but there are so many great games on this system.

Unfortunately, that just isn’t the case. However, I have a great number of NeoGeo options on my Switch.
Playing these fantastic games at home, or on the go, is absolutely fine by me. Either in a classic compilation (Samurai Shodown Collection), or individually at $7.99 a pop (sometimes less because of a sale), I have a lot of NeoGeo love for me right now.

Just finished restoring my first Space Invaders Deluxe cabinet and working on a Sega Turbo. Looking for a MVS cabinet as my next project specifically because of the cartridge interface and how approachable the games are. I bought a Neo Geo CD unit with a broken disc drive last year, and installed an ODE. It handles the unibios stuff and also speeds up the loading to the limit of the hardware, surpassing the CDZ speeds. Probably the cheapest way to play on original hardware. There are differences and exclusives between MVS, AES and CD titles as well - really need them all to experience the entire library. Currently using the Mister FPGA and unibios for MVS and AES, and playing the CD titles on original hardware. Neo Geo is cycle accurate on the current Neo Geo core.

Picking favorite games is tough, as most are pretty fun playthroughs. But I think of Metal Slug 1-3, and the KOF series first.
Other notable games, either based on fun factor, or the fact they were the games I saw in so many Neo Geos as a kid were: Sengoku, Puzzle Bobble, Crossed Swords, Nam 1975, Blazing Star, Shock Troopers... Geeze, I could Keep going. Pop a game in and have some fun!

I had an opportunity to acquire a Neo Geo CDZ a couple years ago through an online acquaintance, and I have no regrets. The load times don't bother me, and he gave me a pretty good deal on it with a handful of choice games. There are a few that will probably remain out of my price range, but I should be able to get most of what I will want to play without paying too much, and I'm okay with that. I'll also vouch for those SNK collections. I put a ton of time into the PSP compilation after I bought it.

Always wanted an AES since seeing it as a kid in Hong Kong, so now that I’m an adult with adult money, I figured time to take the plunge.
If it wasn’t for the wave of giddy nostalgia, I likely would have gone the emulation route using a MISTer or something similar, but there is a certain joy from slotting in the monster cartridge and hearing that Neo Geo startup sound when you power it on :)
Also picked up a Neo Geo CD, which gets an unfair amount of flak imho. Load times are only a problem on most fighting games and later titles, so a worthwhile option for original hardware and a great way to play some of the games that are vastly more expensive on the AES.

Unfortunately that SNK Arcade Classics game you showed near the end has pretty lousy reviews online, with many outlets saying the PSP and PS2 versions have long load times, and overall emulation is spotty with only Metal Slug and Last Resort being worth it. Though interestingly the best rated version was the Wii release, so if you want to play them on the Wii you got options. Another option is Virtual Console, also on the Wii. The Virtual Console service is dead... but sailing the seven seas never dies, so all you need to do is go to a certain Mariocube Repository, and enjoy all the Neo Geo Virtual Console you'd like (or as many as they added, which was around 50 if I can recall). Beyond this, there was a Metal Slug collection on the PSP and PS2 which I actually own on the PSP and it's definitely worth it, and Arcade Archives has re-released a bunch of Neo Geo games for around $8 CAD a pop on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

    Hi Bird,
Good to see you again bro. Another excellent Neo-Geo video you share to help many in the community find alternatives for them to game on the Neo-Geo. The SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1 for the PS@, Wii, and PSP are great choices and well worth playing with the price that won't hurt your wallet...As a Neo-Geo buff for 34 years, is the Neo-Geo worth it? YOU BET!! Since I play and collect for the AES, that's my first choice personally for sure. 8^)
I shared your video up for you on the Neo-Geo thread over on the forums for others to take notice for them to view on AtariAge. Thank you for sharing this with us bro. Keep up the great work you always offer in the community. 8^)

I went down the emulation route for neogeo. Bought an arcade1up yogaflame and sodtmodded it to run retroarch. Its kinda wierd how much nostalgia the neogeo has. Even if i never played it back then, i still have this feeling of familiarity when i play the games.

It's definitely worth it, I have been collecting for 2 years, I have the mvsx, the arcade stick pro, I have versions of the games on my other consoles, and I'm contemplating getting a consolized mvs board and then getting a flash cart to go with it. As an adult, I've come to like arcade games more than anything, I do like the pick up and play anytime. And being able to play all of these is something I could of only dreamed of as a kid.

Everyone likes to compare Metal Slug to Contra but if you think about, it plays more like a beat 'em up than a run 'n gun. You'll often come up to sections where you can't progress any further until you defeat all of the enemies on screen and it even has the "GO" arrow that most beat 'em ups use.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's a great distinction to point out. What I've always felt makes them the most different from each other is that Contra feels like more of a platformer than Metal Slug (especially after Metal Slug 1).

I bought the SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1 and the Samurai Shodown Collection on PSP years ago and they've been a great way to play SNK games, especially after being able to transfer them to PS3 and then Vita. Then, all I had to grab what single games I was missing and wanted off the PS4 storefront, like Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Waku Waku 7. Not a bad way to play!

Fun video Bird. Yeah, retro gamers should all check out the Neo Geo. Lots of good stuff. I'm not a fan of one on one fighters but still so much good stuff to play. Of course the Metal Slugs are my favorites but Shock Troopers, Blazing Star, and Nam 1975 stand out and the sports games are also surprisingly fun with Baseball Stars 2 and Neo Turf Masters as a couple of good titles.
One other quick option for some people could be Antstream Arcade. They have something like 60 SNK titles. Not a great option for collectors but definitely for those who want an official way to enjoy the Neo Geo.

So, I am older than Return of the Jedi and used to be a pretty big game collector. At one point, I had every game I was ever interested in that was released prior to 2004. Unfortunately, among the disasters I survived were such that claimed my Neo Geo collection. While I have since elected to just go the 'original hardware plus flashcart/ODE/CFW' route, Neo Geo is the one that made me deviate. Rather than try to buy another AES or go consolized MVS route, I put together a MiSTer and have been using that for Neo Geo and RGB 8-bit. Yeah, you have to put on an eyepatch, but I spent a good chunk of money as a student with disposable income on those NG carts that are now worth more money than Twitter. I still play on real NES and SMS etc hardware when I need the composite nostalgia punch, but the MiSTer is my go-to for that era otherwise, and especially for Neo Geo.

Aw yeah, Retro Bird finally discussing the one true big boy console! The Neo Geo is a difficult system for me, though. So many fighting games -- and the only one I only really need is Street Fighter 2 Turbo, which is not on the system. It's also such a shame I can't get into Metal Slug despite loving Gunstar Heroes and Contra. The limited special weapon ammo, the lack of autofire for your pea shooter and the floaty jumping are major annoyances for me. I always end up dying over and over, credit feeding and eventually quitting. I did make it all the way through Metal Slug 3 this way and I do have to admit it has some fantastic set pieces and wild, creative ideas. Fortunately, the Neo Geo also has a bunch of shmups, action games and platformers like Spin Master which are more up my alley. Still, I would probably only get one if I got it for super cheap -- which, of course, is highly unlikely.

Yes, the Neo Geo is absolutely worth it ^^
I went from a second hand Japan-Version AES and a handful of games I've sold again to these consoles I'm still using:
    - Wii (SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 & AES downloads from Wii Virtual Console)
    - Nintendo Switch (unfortunately only the MVS versions available)
    - SNK Arcade Stick Pro (with the complete library hack)
    - Mega Drive Mini (hacked)
My favorite SNK titles (I cheat a bit here) are:
    - Samurai Shodown 2
    - Real Bout Special
    - Metal Slug
    - Shock Troopers
    - Garou
    - Super Sidekicks 3
    - KOF 98
    - KOF 2000
    - KOF XIII (here's the cheat)
    - Andro Dunos 2 (the even bigger cheat)
Btw: If you're looking for a great new Run N' Gun, check out The Huntdown. It's part of my trifecta.

Unfortunately the Neo Geo cabinet standard prevented it from having more racing games. They just could not attach a wheel to the cabinet or compete with dedicated cabinets so most of them are overhead view racing games that are not very impressive.
