hey kel! i absolutely adore your work. i just recently made my first screenprint for one of my university classes, and its such a fun process! you've inspired me to be more ambitious and experimental with my next piece ;-) it's so cool how you have access to a studio, unfortunately where i live i don't think there are any near me :( so i'm going to soak up having access to the studio at my university. great video
I love to hear that! There’s so much you can try with silkscreen, especially if you get into monoprinting you can get really ambitious. Good luck in the studio!! Definitely enjoy all the space and resources at your university studio
Your art is SO BEAUTIFUL :)) Could you possibly do a video on how you use your iPad as an artist? I've been wanting to purchase one but haven't been able to find an artists perspective on using it as creative tool and you seem to use it so effectively!!
Hi Dounia! Yes, I can definitely make a video on using the iPad a bit more--like chatting about my favorite tools and then more specifically about drawing on Procreate? It's my favorite program on the iPad for drawing by far!
@@KelBelter Yayyyy! And exactly! I was just curious about what apps you used, what you like/dislike, how you translate your sketches to digital, what aspects do you most apply to your medium of screen printing, and especially what it feels like to draw and write on it (they don't let you try the Apple Pencil in-store where I live and I'm very curious how it feels to draw on glass compared to writing on paper)? Any accessories? I'm a sophomore majoring in studio arts and I've been considering investing in one but I haven't been able to find the opinions of someone who would be using it in a similar way as I would...Thank you SO SO much, you're a literal rockstar :))
@@douniametje1245 Saving your comment and will definitely work on a video about this! Overall, I would definitely recommend it and I think you'll find you get used to it pretty fast and it helps a lot to speed digital work along
@kelbelter Great video! Question. When you are making the screens for each color, do you have to have the transparency in the EXACT same spot on each screen when you burn them in order to have good registration? Or does the whole registration process happen after that and doesn't really matter?
Hi Kelly! Can you make a video explaining how to mix colors to create the transparency effect? Or explain it in a comment. There's not mucho info out there. Great video, very insightful and wonderful piece.
Thanks Steven! To create transparency in inks you can add in something called 'transparent base.' Speedball sells this and you can mix it with their acrylic inks to give more transparency. You can also use an 'extender' that will make the ink more transparent. If you check out Speedball online or in a store, you can see the different options! You can also use textile/waterbased inks instead of acrylic inks, and some of those are naturally a bit more transparent than acrylic silkscreen inks. Especially CMYK process inks, because those are meant to be somewhat transparent so that you get a layering effect.
Im having little problem to find about the metal pin that you use on the internet. Do you have the image upclose or maybe some link to buy the metal pin online?. Or do you have any suggestion for other options that have same function? Thank you so much the video process really helps me
currently in quarantine so I have been thinking more and more about this video! What are you trying to print btw? Maybe I can address it in my video so it's helpful for you ^^
they're just scrap pieces of plastic with a hole punch in them! But I'm sure you could buy some as well. Seems like a good way to reuse old acetates :-)
Hi Kel, I'm planning to create an A2 poster using Procreate. Does it matter if I draw it on size A4 then enlarge it to size A2 on Photoshop? Would the quality still be the same? :) Thank You!
Hi! It will be better to make it A2 size, otherwise, it will come out a bit pixellated---but if you are going to screenprint, it might be a bit easier to correct in Photoshop. Try to make the size you will print it at if you can~!
I enjoyed this video. I am interested in screening onto canvas. There is an inequality between the height of the canvas and the height of the silk screen frame in relation to where the frame lands when the hinges are closed onto my canvas. How do I get the hingeclamp base to be 1.5-2" off of the table to fit my canvas under the hinges and frame?
Some screen printing devices have adjustable areas so you can raise the screen up. I would recommend looking for one of those, or maybe putting a block between the hinge and the table if it's a simple set up. Since I'm not an expert on what equipment is available in your country, it's probably best to ask a studio or shop near you what your options are!
when screenprinting, you use registration marks (they look like little crosses inside a circle) in order to make sure that your layers match up with one another! you prepare this beforehand in photoshop before you make the screens and print everything. I use a 'registration sheet' before printing each layer to check that the marks match up correctly. you can see a visual example here: www.retrosupply.co/blogs/tutorials/how-to-make-a-screen-print-from-procreate#registration
I did recently, using a laser to engrave my silkscreens! Will definitely do some more home printing videos soon ☺️ let me know what you’d like me to show during the next one and I’ll try to include it!
Hi, just getting interested in silkscreening and wondering if you do any lessons? If not, any recommendation would be appreciated. We’re in Geoje, Korea but willing to go up to Seoul. Thank you.😊
I don’t but I think there are many studios in Seoul that have classes, if you are still looking! Dbprint is in my neighborhood and I’ve heard nice things about their class!
it's 300g paper that my studio stocks (so idk the exact brand). It's not cotton based, but it is archival and acid free! I pay around $10 for 20 sheets.
for this one, it's a little bigger than A3, so I printed on a film roll. The roll is up to 60 cm wide and you can print as long as you want, since it's not cut into separate sheets. But if I wanted to print it just a little bit smaller, with margins, I could have just used A3 sized film.
I'm referring to acrylic silkscreen ink! Brands like speedball make that for printing. But for printing on fabric, you should use Speedball (or other brands') water-based textile ink!
In this video, it’s just 300gsm uncoated acid free paper. Nothing fancy! But sometimes I also like to use cotton rag paper, and watercolor paper can also work nicely if you’re looking for some texture!

Just curious, who manufacturers the press you are printing on ? Is it a Korean company?
yes! it's a Korean company
Thanks for the great video. Just wondering if you know the manufacturer of the press that you're using to hold your screens?
It's just called Holder, a local Korean brand.
hey, and thanks for sharing your skills! still, i don't get how you center the different frames / colors to match up. can you elaborate on that?

How exactly would you do this if you’ve created your painting on a canvas?
I would see if there's a way to scan your painting first, and then you may be able to create your layers from there with Photoshop.

Hey, What are the plastic tabs to hold the paper in place called. Or where can I find those
You can make them by just cutting up some old plastic/plastic folders and using a hole punch :-)
If you want to see the Elvis of this process, his name is Takashi Murakami.
