1400km in a BYD Atto 3 - Road trip!

  • A matter of hours after collecting our new BYD Atto 3 from Andrew Simms Auckland BYD, we hit the road, visiting a number of @chargenetnz4010 chargers and even a sneaky charge on a Tesla unit.
Time pressures mean this video is a little rough! But hopefully the BYD faithful love it!

The BYD Atto 3 is an awesome Ev. I took delivery of my Blue Atto 3 last Friday here in South Australia, I'm customer no 2 in my state, my brother is customer no 3, he picked up his White Atto 3 up on Monday just gone.
I have fitted a full set of carpet floor mats, A carpet cargo mat and a dash mat all black but with blue trim that I purchased from Aliexpress.
On Monday I changed the tyres to Continental Ecocontact 5 XL tyres that are specifically designed for Evs.
The tyre size is identical to the tyres already fitted to the Atto 3. I also had blue colour coded mudflaps fitted to my blue Atto 3. My brother is buying the tyres off me that were originally fitted to my Atto 3.
On Friday I'm having all the windows tinted ready for summer.

BYD pretty good on range . I believe in Australia they can get more range due to more straight roads as compared with Newzealand more hills and curved roads.

Actually you get better economy the slower you drive in ev’s, unlike ice cars, which get better economy if you travel on overdrive at highway speeds. It may be worth putting a gearbox in ev’s to solve this issue, because no point in having that extra torque available at high speeds - no- one needs to do burnouts at 100 kmph.

That USB-c port with PD is great! I haven't heard of any other car doing that. On a 2019 tesla, if you plug more than two or three devices into the USB, it gets flakey... not much power, had to disconnect the game controllers, and only plug in when using them, otherwise my USB drive would drop, and no recording of camera video (sentry mode.)

Thanks so much for sharing all your videos👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺. From your first BYD video to this one; there all informative educational and have real life entertainment !!!! Really looking forward to your next TH-cam , please keep them coming.!!!!! My ‘white’ BYD comes in December in Australia. { you fellows in NZ are always just in front ie New Year’s Eve [lol]} and the ‘bloody’ rugby!!!!
I live in the country, northern NSW, so this was the perfect video for me. Especially the realities of your informative (not a nerd to want too learn information and specs you provide!! Lol) guide me to the realities of my future car in a different environment; I can take note of what you have shown and try to apply that to my country driving environment ; my climate is slightly hasher and hotter than yours ( it’s not a competition lol)! {we average 28 plus !!!! in summer and 18 in winter, few more pot holes and dirt roads & driving near 100km from our town to the coast {west to east} the elevation goes from 100m to sea level, less north to south!!! , 5% of driving will be at 115kph of hwy driving, 35% @ 100kph hwy driving , 40% 80kph hwy driving {with the occasional pot hole!!!😱😱😱} and 20% ‘country’ city driving so it appears up-to 300-340 kms??? @ 17w-22w per 100km{ is that the correct term or concept to use????) not for 420kms plus I guess you can achieve in city driving IS THE REALITY OF WHAT MY DRIVING DATA WILL BE. THATS OK, WITH THE BYD AT NEAR 1/2 $$$COST compared to the top end Teslas and other good brands, and EVEN more importantly it is more than competitive, arguably the best, in its class & above, I understand it now has a 5 star safety rating, it has many features founds in top quality EV’s and in some cases $1000’s plus, less new govt $$rebates; SO YES EV AND ESPECIALLY BYD Atto 3 has BECOME a real OPTION 🎉
Now the govt just have to take a $$zero of the price tag & we all would own one LOL 😊😱😊
Last weekend we had a regional EV exhibition showing every car available or coming soon lol, in Australia. { That Porsche Shapped 911 EV looks pretty cool!!!!) in fact nearly every single car looks very very cool. No more 2005 Prius style!!. I think the tricks is to give the interior something amazing, yet familiar , something you don’t need a pilot’s license to drive, BUT WHAT WE except from a futuristic looking car ( nothing to out there, quite yet!!!) same as the exterior, yet , still making us feel comfortable both inside and out AND THE BYD, FOR ME, FULFILS ALL MY SIMPLE NEEDS; IT LOOKS VERY IMPRESSIVE!! A simple car to get from A to B, no fuse, no issues, easy to drive like a video game, lots of modern tech & safety features and ‘child proof’ to dive, a car that moves but not a sports car (0-100 km in 7.3 sec was a hotted up rocket or a European sports car when I was in the 70’s 80’s, now its in a suv WT??????
I got to feel your touch of the BYD Atto3. It’s not a BMW or Mercedes but for what it is, it is more than perfect. I just need something simple easy to drive with all the modern safety equipment, just to drive me to work comfortably, to sit on the highway for 30 minutes @100 km an hour at 4 am in the morning and have that lane assist to help me if need be, I hope not but you understand !!!! And I’m a little fellow so size wise it was perfect. the seats felt plasticky but I don’t care they were very comfortable And the layout look terrific.
I had know interest n or idea about EV‘s , until about 6 weeks ago. Never thought of a EV because in real real life i live in the country ( 230km for a charge WT??? Even up-to 300kms was no good, & yes $70-$80 gets you your 500-700km ? Of range, if you have $70-$80k but to get a real 420, I have seen Chinese videos get 480-510 !!!???!!! Petrol is now $250’a week to get to work. A friend told me about BYD and its relationship with Toyota and Tesla and all the markets they are successful in AND THEY MAKE CARS!!!. After watching every BYD Atto 3 in every language, even though I only speak one of them ( they have pictures0) I put my order in straight away for my BYD Atto 3 extended range.
That’s enough essay, simply thanks for great video, look forward to continuing the journey!!!

the only exception to that was a trip I did to the US recently and hired same car and used a V3 charger and achieved 248kwh.... once only out of 30 chargers mostly V2. I have been closely looking at the atto3 for my wife and I have found yourvideo on this awesome 👌 thanks so much.

The headlights have auto-high beam don't they? Did you run the heater or heated seats? Love to see the charge curve from as close to 0% as possible to 100% and look at the 10-80% figures particularly. I believe you can play up to 10-20secs of licensed music as there is a EV youtuber in UK, EV Puzzle, his entire title scene uses licensed music but only short bits of a variety of songs and hasn't been copyright struck or de-monetized. Would imagine TH-cam has it written somewhere in their creator policies. The 192Wh/km is not bad for the entire trip. The cost as well be interesting what a average fossil car would do based on current fuel prices in comparison a similar sized SUV to the Atto 3 maybe a Hyundai Tucson perhaps. Going from my Ioniq in 1.5yrs when my lease is up to the Atto 3 though will be abit to get used to the efficiency change but not as bad as it could be.

Maximum charging speed I've seen is 211kW, so 20% to full in about the same time as a pee and a cup of coffee. Yes, one day the batteries will deteriorate (the Leaf has a fairly crude battery and management system), but even then their batteries can be repurposed to use as household batteries for solar charging systems.

How much highway driving do you do?

    • @qilu2004
      @qilu2004 ปีที่แล้ว

@@deanstyles2567 when I drive on highway, I keep the speed between 100-110 km/hr, and get below 18kw per 100km. but when I drive on local roads, traffic jams means often time 20km/hr speed. energy consumption is also around 18kw. when I can average 50km/hr for a stretch, I can get just under 16kw. My Han is awd with 363kw max power. it is understandable thirsty.

@@LaowaiDaveJCP in winter, it would be around 21kw. I always run ac at 23 degree and turn on the seat heat. one more thing, my infotainment console and speakers are always busy. either I play music or videos (to keep the kids quite) and I almost always run navigation on the split screen to find the best route under real time traffic.

That’s terrible efficiency. 5.5km / kWh? or 181Wh/km. That gives the LR only 330km range? Assuming it’s 60kWh useable which it’s probably not.

The EV Age: When charging, software and range become the most important topics. I´m doing 1.200 km trips six times a year. Good luck using an EV for that. You will need three more days 😂

There's a video on TH-cam (link below) of two people driving from Sydney to Melbourne (900km), one in an Ioniq5 and another a petrol Hyundai Tucson. The Ioniq5 arrived less than an hour after the Tucson. Sounds like a long trip is perfectly doable with suitable charging infrastructure.

I agree! I'm struggling with the fact that Taupo to Auckland is only just capable on 1 charge and that's with 1 person and some minor luggage, so 2 people + proper luggage means another stop...please, are we really kidding ourselves thing that these are the way to go? I hope loke hell you never need to tow anything, your range will plumet to 50% or less, that will make for fun times. Also what happens when your having to que for and hour or more to use said charging stations when we've all had to convert, then don't start on the road user charges that will apply to EV's as the Govt is loosing tax on fuel! Then how are we going to create the new energy required for all these cars? We struggle with power in the summer now. Can wait for the future 😀

Its like buying a smart phone which you. cannot update operating system or purchase apps. In a year or two it will be toast, a big reason why the horrible depreciation
If the car was priced at $35K as originally promised, maybe consider, but now at over $55K, lower overall cost to purchase quality Korean or Tesla with much better quality safety performance and lower cost of ownership
