As much as you love the look of Kona, do you feel the same way as I do that it looks like a mini version of a Li (Lixiang) EV - ONE, L7, L8 and L9?
If its the same price, which would you choose?
Nice review. Own the BYD Atto3 since Aug 2022. 23k traveled average 13.5 kw-h per 100km over that entire distance, mixture of city and county driving. City driving only around 480km, country 360-390km usually with four people and a hairy dog, NZ roads. Can charge to 100% with the LFP blade battery without worrying about degradation. Really happy with this car and quality. No issues apart from annoying safety warning system that can be turned off everytime. Ps no rattles or annoying noises so far. Highly recommend.
Apparently the Seal has a fuse in the fuse box you can pull, and it turns off the driver warnings, but it also turns off cruise control,
In the latest update you can turn off the safety system permanently, if I recall correctly.

And on the inside it seems the design team were given total freedom to design to a cost point.
Had an Atto 3 for about 12 months now and found it to be a great car especially around the city. My wife drives it the majority of the time as I have a dual cab and find that we drive the Atto most of the time on weekends with the occasional drive down the Bruce to Brisbane from the Fraser Coast and it's great on the highway and would make the distance easily but we usually charge along the way anyway. Yes it has the odd quirks and features (Sorry Doug...) but overall we are loving it.
BYD's pickup truck is a right hand drive, it's probably gonna be released in Australia and Thailand first. It could be a good upgrade for you.

You might wait until around July 2024. CATL announced it will halve the price for its batteries until then. BYD definitely won't keep the prices up then either.
Agreed. 52K for the dynamic seal is better.
At 50k price, you can get the Atto 3 ext. or you can get a Seal Dynamic. Both of which are much much better than the Hyundai.

ATTO2 (yuan up) will be launched in China soon, and the price should be around 22,000 Australian dollars. This is a small car with CTB chassis technology, which is the same technology as seal. It definitely feels good to drive

Sorry, the front of the BYD is symmetrical and smart with headlights that look real. That Kona charge port ruins the otherwise okay look.
4 star vs 5 star (competition over, inexcusable Hyundai).
You can buy a really well packaged aftermarket space saver for $900 to suit Atto with jack etc included. You remove the lower floor and it fits straight in. The boots are then equal for that spend. $1k on a set of Continental 235/50 tyres and you are still $1k cheaper than the cheapest Kona.

Had the Atto for over a year. Love it to bits, wonderful drive and ride, simply outstanding value. Super easy to drive, love the entertainment system, opening roof and sun shade.
Access is very good particularly for those less able. I have to carry a wheelchair and it easily fits the back of the Atto.
Finally, lots of grunt and good range.
I rarely use DC chargers and around here they are mostly 50KW. My typical time on the DC charger is 20 mins.
Similar points to yours.
Also have carted home 2.4metre Ikea flat packs, which amazed the staff who thought it would never fit. And last week it was a washing machine which made it in the back with millimetres to spare. Already go my money back on carrying loads and saving on delivery fees!
BYD hybrid should be better.
BYD hybrid has beaten up Toyota's hybrid in Chinese market because BYD has much bigger batteries(longer battery range) and drives much smoother and quicker.
What BYD's admirers have in common is that they are Chinese. :( The patriotism of the Chinese is great, but you must not lie.
The LFP chemistry of the BYD is much LESS energy dense than the the NMC chemistry of the Kona. This means that the battery is bigger and heavier than the equivalent capacity. However, it is much safer being less prone to thermal runaway. Wouldn't have a car without it.
He is talking about the entire battery pack, and you are talking about the battery cells. Because LiFe has better high-temperature safety and BYD’s innovative structure, BYD’s LiFe battery pack of the same size is actually better than Hyundai’s LG lithium-ion battery. Pack energy density is higher. LG is a soft pack battery, and the battery pack requires a high-strength battery pack casing.

To save your battery life,
Manufacturer recommended charging you battery between 20% to 80%.
but not with BYD's LFP batteries, you can easily to 10% to 90% (or 100%, just after 90%, charging getting slow)
All lithium ion batteries, including LFP, suffer degradation under high SOC. LFP however has to be charged to 100% because it has a flat discharge curve which makes it difficult for the BMS to estimate accurate SOC/range without recalibrating the BMS.
@@tooltalk LFPs are expected to have significantly higher cycle life, so when you talk about degradation I am assuming you mean significantly less degradation.
@@GDM22 LFP has significantly higher lifespan under stationary batteries (or ESS) workload. They don't last nearly as long in moving vehicles (or EV) workload, which is why LFP is mostly deployed in compact/small EVs. There are different aging mechanisms for different workload and a lot of rabid Tesla fanbois intentionally conflate the two to hype up Tesla's use of inferior batteries in SR models.
EDIT: spelling and missing words
@@tooltalk Where did you get that inforrmation from, reference it. Watched a Cleanerwatt video early 2024 and the LFP battery degradation using Tessie Global data shows that after 45,000 miles, the LFP models have the lowest degradation at 2%. @@2kayBaby well. Then it's the brand name. Isuzu is not a big brand like Toyota outside of Japan. Mitsubishi is generally not considered as a reliable brand like Toyota and Honda everywhere around the globe. They might be good now but the damage has already been done.
So unless people stop buying the expensive Hilux Toyota doesn't need to lower their prices. I mean come on if people are not buying it Toyota will lower their prices. So educate the people, I guess.
@@2kayBaby it's the same here in India.
Indian companies are able to make well build cars with premium looking interior but Toyota is selling Fortuner with a high price. Fortuner is good looking on the outside. But the Indian companies beat the Toyotas in terms of features and design. But people buy the Toyotas with that hefty price. When people ask why owners reply it will last long (which is true). And when it's Toyotas hybrid a big car like that will only drink the fuel like a small car.
But if people are buying, Toyota has no reason to lower the price. Financially abled people (not talking about the rich, but the upper middle class) in India might buy a bad Toyota car with high price because of the brand name. Both Hyundai and BYD and any other company don't have that power all over the world.
To me BYD looks much better. I saw the Hyundai the other day on the street. I was shocked by the front, where the light line goes across the front and the front lights BELOW that line! And they were quite dark. Soooo weird! That the charging is in the front is really a stupid idea.

At present, BYD cannot reach the top spot in the world because there is also Tesla. The future is possible.
Strangely in the UK the basic trim level with bigger battery in both cars costs about the same price, about £37,000-38,000.
Kona looks cool at the front, and lousy at the back IMO. Those rear lights are frumpy - and ugly.
On the interior it's no contest, the BYD is much cooler.
The LFP battery on the BYD is handy, but the charging is slow if you charge publicly compared to others. The regen on the BYD leads to longer range in the city than the WLTP, but shorter on the highway where there is less braking.
byd有100kwh,120kwh,150kwh,好几种速率。充电时间其实差不多的,越高速率会带来发热,然后降速和更多的能源损耗。
Korean manufacturers lost the advance of battery cost than Chinese ones.
The Kona uses almost 10+ year old NCM6, not de facto industry standard NCM8/9. The Kona is after all an entry-level EV. LFP is also for entry-level, low-range EVs due to its low-energy density and weight -- and outcompetes against NCM6 in price.
And the fact BYD manufactures their own batteries saved more.
In China the atto 3 in video costs less than A$ 30k.
Or 20k USD, 19k EUR, 16k GBP.
@@chrischen7092 : just to be sure, Chinese's battery competitors' key advantage is their raw material cost. The raw material cost for NCM8/9 already cheaper than LFP -- we would just have to wait a few years for NCM8/9 to be commodified .

Coming from your previous byd ATTO 3 review video and you mentioned it is a Medium SUV in that video but are stating it is a Small SUV in this video? Which is it please? 😭
The BIGGEST plus about the Atto 3 is that the battery is the only difference - as far as I know. Everything else is the same. No bullshit where you need to upgrade for certain features.
Mistake in the video @ around 8:20 you say the LiFe battery in the Atto 3 is more energy dense than the lithium ion battery (probably NMC) in the Kona. It's the other way around. You getting more Wh per kg with lithium ion chemisties as opposed to LiFePO4.

@@yudogcome5901 Sorry - he specifically said LiFe is more energy dense which is just plain wrong. Both batteries are around the same size (64kWh) so even that argument makes zero sense. The Kona is lighter because the battery is more energy dense - more kWh per kg

LFP batteries are effective in lowering vehicle prices, but their physical energy density is inevitably low. China can't catch up with Korea in NCM battery technology at all. However, the current issue in the electric vehicle market is that the price is high compared to the insufficient infrastructure, so LFP appears attractive because the low-priced market is the trend. However, as time goes by, as the production cost of electric vehicles decreases and expensive brands become EVs, LFP will disappear from luxury brands.
The Kona looks too much like the Xpeng G9. And like a knockoff version of the G9 for that matter. That's why I hate it. Can't believe the Koreans would steal a design like that.

@jimmyp1433 I remember Clarkson from Top Gear was testing the autonomous emergency braking on a Mazda. It literally hit the wall at least than 3mph and broke the radiator and rendered the car useless. All modern cars are extremely vulnerable at the front so it will make no difference where the charge port is. Bad location? Yes, but will have the same outcome, a completely un drivable car.

I think hybrids are still more practical in Australia with limited recharge infrastructure. A BYD hybrid would be attractive.
Don't mislead people with strange comments.
There are significant differences between NCM batteries and LFP in terms of physical characteristics. LFP batteries should be 40% cheaper.
Do not buy an electric vehicle that does not use NCM batteries. After a few years, LFP battery cars lose their value.
Currently, the best performance and control for electric vehicles is the Hyundai EGMP Module.
Do not confuse car users with inaccurate information.
Why would LFP batteries lose their value after a few years. The next version of the Blade battery has 25% higher energy density and CATL have an LFP battery coming to market with a 15 year, 1.5 million km warranty with zero degradation after 500,000kms.

Please don't compare BYD to any Koren brand, Compare it with German or US ones. I forget to mention Japanese brand ? Sorry, there is no Japan EV yet
BYD booming in indonesia, order now and car on july or agust
The Kona charging slot at the front is a NO NO NO for me.
How do you charge in your short garage when the power point is at the side of the car ??
I think problem of KONA is prize. Specialy if you pay more, you can have IONIQ5, which is more great than KONA. But if you want budget one, I think BYD is fair enough.
Lithium-Ion has more power density than LifeP04 (LFP or Lithium Iron Phosphate).
After decades as the world's factory, China has mastered the entire industrial chain from low-end raw material processing to high-end precision manufacturing. With resources, skilled workers and advanced technology, it is hard to imagine that they will not succeed. They can easily cut the price down.
BYD hands down
What's wrong with fake leather?
100km/h in Kona you have to be 103km/h
Comic Sans would have absolutely been the better strategic decision. In my professional opinion. ✅
The Kona driver system is obviously in place to distract you from the rattling.
🤣
The boot space is marketed as around ~467 litres in the UK for the Kona. Maybe that's because it doesn't come with a spare wheel here.
For me, the Kona is easily better looking inside and outside, has better range, more storage, better drive, and more toys. Sure, it comes with an increased cost, but you'll find plenty of people willing to pay for all of those improvements/extras.
Have you driven both or have you gleaned that from reviews. For the extra cost I would buy a Tesla.
In USA and Canada, Hyundai is dealing with the PR nightmare of the $60k battery replacement cost. Is that happening in Australia?
As for the charging port in front…..after driving on the highway in the summer…. I don’t want to touch that cover…..
Do not compare other EV with China.
Yeah the Hyundie is crap
There are more than 1.5 billion Chinese people around the world. If they say they like each other in comments, the comments become meaningless. Anyone can see that BYD has an old design and has not been verified.
The global sales disagree with you!
I think the old design is the key why it became a successful global model.
Don't look at others with colored glasses. You have to drive first. It's not too late to comment.
没有经过验证?出口之前我们已经验证完了,才会买到海外。明白?相反,真不清楚什么人会买韩国车?韩国人吗?😊
What do you mean by verified. Who needs to verify the design.
I prefer the Kona TBH it's better looking
I would buy the Atto 3 and pay $1k more to get 4 good tires...
BYD far more good looking than the Kona and the price are better, money worth !
그래서 귀하는 비야디 한대 사실건가요?
@@mgm5316难道买韩国车吗?
The BYD LFP battery is actually less energy dense than Kona's NMC.
He is talking about the entire battery pack, and you are talking about the battery cells.
