Hey Rod I have another story for you! So I used too fish the lower canyon pools on the chehalis River ! I remember going there my first time,we would park at the camp site beside the river,we called it the the Boy Scout camp site! Anyway this used to be our number one river for coho small 4-6 pounders were first and they would come on the first rains in October! Approximately around the 6th! The trail actually was almost not there,so we hiked the mountain then along the face for about maybe one mile, then my dad tied a rope onto a tree and threw it over the cliff!and down we went!(when I took my dads ashes there that rock face now had a three by three trough going down it and was way easy) Anyways we kept four nice10-17 lb coho that day my job was to tie the fish on a rope and hang them over my neck,my dad took the rods and He would get under me and help me climb the rock by pushing me up😆 Great memories! We used to fish a lot with Ken and Silvia Bruce Great People GREAT childhood! Started fishing there on my 8th birthday! I’m 66 now!
On day four of Carl and Alex Fishing's Canada fishing adventure, we attempted float fishing for coho salmon at Chehalis River near Chilliwack. Enjoy! :)
Thank you rod wish you the best on all your fishing trips. Go get em buddy.
Another awesome video Rod. Thank you for sharing your time with those great kids. And what a great experience for them as well !
rob lipiec Thanks!
Hey Rod, love the video. Glad you are taking your passion and making it available for all of us to see. I live up in Anchorage, Alaska and fish almost every weekend in the summer. You should make a trip up and try fly fishing the Russian River for red salmon, sure is a blast. Also, Halibut charters up here make for pretty fun times as well. Nothing beats Coho fishing however. Anyways, keep up the good work, and if you ever visit Alaska, I'd love to fish with you and share some of my homemade flies with you!
That's a beautiful place rod.
We have amazing locations here in BC, very spoiled.
I've got a case of coho fever and watched this video again... I really like the look of your 2 camera scenes Rod. It looked like you lads had a great time.
Cheers,
Thanks! Just a couple more months until we do it again! :)
I always tell the boys to reel in the slack and feel the fish before setting the hook... When you crack the whip on a slack line like that, it seems you lose a lot more fish..
Beautiful scenery there Rod.. Great video, thanks.
bernie lee Thanks. Definitely gotta keep that line tight on the hook set, either by cranking the reels or keeping the rod high. What I didn't mention in the video is that the line should always be kept somewhat tight between the rod tip and the float as it drifts downstream, but not tight enough to interfere the drift. It also helps to keep that section of the line off the water to avoid any resistance on the drift or hook-set.
hey rod, heading there this weekend, you think my best bet is float fishing?
Hi Rod, what to expect on the river late April please?
Not a whole lot goes on in Lower Mainland rivers in late April.
Hey Rod I’m heading up there this July, what’s the best way to get access of the river? Also would it be productive during July?
Not a whole lot of opportunities in July beside some chinook salmon fishing.
@@FishingwithRod Thanks! What about accessing the river? What is the easiest way?
this was a great video Rod! Have an awesome Christmas!
Mathew Wong Thanks! You Too!
one day i will be the great fisherman you are rod my hero
Do you do any charters? I'd love to travel to where you are and go out with you for a day or 2 ! Or more!
i find it funny that people have nothing better to do than come and hate on someone that makes so many people happy
maybe you dont like him, but hes done everything for me. maybe i wouldnt be here right now if it wasnt for him...
Great vid Rod you got some beautiful rivers in your neck of the woods. Be cool
Cooper w Thanks! :)
Great videos and what fish can I fish for in the Coquitlam river?
18:00 fish was still alive. Tried but darn
I'd love to have that setup. Good fishing
MrSKEZgraffiti Thanks. Shimano Chronarch baitcasting reel and Islander Steelheader centerpin reel, they are my two go-to reels for this type of fishing.
Rod, do yo offer guided 'walk and wade' trips? I'll be in the Harrison River area in November, adn wondering if there will still be clean / mint Coho around the Chehalis River? Please let me know.....Joe
Hi Joseph, I don’t do any guiding at all actually. November can indeed be a great month for coho salmon on the Chehalis.
Hey rod. When you go salmon/stealhead fishing on the river. What do you look for in like a spot to fish at. Any special spots?
Rodney Ruggles Some spots can be great for me every year but generally the river changes each year so what is a productive spot during one year may not be for the next. For coho salmon, I look for either moderate flowing runs (walking speed) and concentrate on the mid section of the run and the tailout where they tend to hold. I also like to fish pools with very little river current when casting and retrieving lures.
Great info. ....may I ask what kind of waders and boots you recommend....
Thanks! I like Simms waders and boots, the jacket too. :)
have you ever fished the birkenhead river for sockeyes
Salmon fishing for the Birkenhead River is closed year round.
Fishing with Rod lol you exposed him 😂😂
are you doing a bc swing cast on your centerpin ?
Vanouhi Not sure what kind of cast that is, more like a self-taught Rodney cast.
Hey Rod, I'm float fishing for Salmon right now and I just wanted your opinion on the last part of my setup, I don't know how long to make my Fluro leader, I know I will have to adjust my bobber for different depths but I didn't know a steady length for my Fluro leader. I was also wondering on what a better main line for float fishing would be, Mono or Braid? Anyways hope to hear from you soon! I hope the salmon fishing in BC right now is going well... always waiting for your upcoming videos and I'm always recommending them to my friends :)
For main line, I always use Maxima Ultragreen mono (12 or 15lb). For the leader, 1 to 1.5 feet is all you need. Any longer you will start missing bites.
Thanks. More videos to come starting this fall. Taking a break in August right now. :)
***** Thanks Rod! I'm going to be adjusting my setup. Cant wait for your videos coming up! Really Excited :p
I already missed Coho season, It was a pretty good year for me :)
Lai 9 more months until we do it all again! :)
Hey rod! What size float and weight are you using? Looking to get out and float for some coho this fall. Thank you
My preference on floats for coho salmon is 12 to 15g if the water is slow. If it is faster, I'd move up to 20g.
very interested in using a bait casting rod would like to know the make of it
+Dan d That particular one is custom built, but my other favourites to go with right now are Gloomis IMX 1262-2C STFR and their E6X series.
Nice fish can you do a video fishing the capilano river
Possibly.
Do you have chinook salmon in bc?
Cris Nick Alex Yes we do.
Centerpins are better than a baitcaster and it's made for float fishing
what size rod was the baitcasting? power on the rod? also what line were you using?
hunter idk The rod is 10'6", rated 8 to 12b, medium. The main line is Maxima Ultragreen mono, 12lb.
When is Coho season Rod?
Anders Jensen Depending on which river you are fishing at, coho salmon fishing starts anytime between June and October. In Southwestern BC (Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island), coho salmon fishing starts around early September and ends in late November, but peak time is generally around early October, depending on the river level.
Thanks! Love the videos. I was just on the Kenai for the first time and few weeks ago after King salmon. Amazing experience. Best from Denmark
Wow this is six year ago!+
Yes! 😊 So long ago already.
what is the best bait for coho salmon?
+Riam Mey Bait that work for coho salmon include freshly cured roe (like what you've seen in this video), dew worm, shrimp, krill, single eggs... Each bait can work better others under certain situations, so there isn't one single best bait for coho salmon. Try each out and discover which works best for you.
Alright!
what do you use to edit your footage I really love your videos
***** Thanks. Final Cut. :)
thank you
Fishing with a rod with Rod. 😂
😆
Hey Rod, I have a question on hook size. I use 6/0 Bar Fishing with spin n glo. 4/0 Coho fishing with lures, 2/0 Pink Fishing, all are Gamakatsu octopus. What size to you use drifting for Coho with roe? Thanks. I am a big fan of your videos, keep the information coming.
Personally I like size 1 Owner needle point SSW hooks, but I've heard of friends using as big as 2/0 and as small as size 6. It depends on how big your target species are and how clear the water is etc as well.
What’s the best spots for Coho ?!
Where they would sit and actively bite.
Hey Rod, I just started fishing the veddar for coho with spoons and spinners after watching some of your videos. I was wondering if you ever add a small weight to get deeper in pools that are 10 ft and more, or is a 1/4 Croc enough, also im guessing that would effect the action of the spoon. And should i mabe concentrate more or pools that are about 5-8ft deep.
Thanks excited for more videos this fall, defiantly a big help!
Way to not kill wild fish. Its always awesome to see the wild ones go free
Awesome video! i also upload fishing videos. If i could catch one you
got, I will definitely upload. Like your video. Subscribed!
Thanks!
Hi Rod, I used to have the habit to keep the fish alive until taking off to make the fish fresher but I think fish must suffer through pain. I should have killed it right away if I want to keep. Thanks for the video :)
+quoc anh Nguyen You're welcome. In British Columbia it is in fact mandatory to kill the fish you want to keep immediately. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that it is cruel to allow the fish slowly dying. Two so you can't release a fish later and keep a bigger one.
Your guide talk too much though.
And carl.. have you ever hit the fish with the stone like that before?
This ain't a guided trip.
sick guy don't hit fish Killer!
陳映霖 How about doing some research on how fish should be properly and humanely dispatched before making an uneducated comment? If a fish is to be kept for consumption in Canada, you're legally required to kill it immediately to prevent it from suffering any further. Killer? Yes. Sick? Take a look at your backyard in Taiwan first, plenty of more disgusting behaviours over there for you to correct.
Rod, you didn't kill the fish. Between the 2 of you it was clunked on the head with a rock a half dozen times ineffectively , and it's gills were still moving in subsequent video. In order to effectively kill fish of that size, it is quite easy to snap the head all the way back and break the spine. This instantly kills the fish, and has the added bonus of bleeding it out as well. You will also find your eggs turn out much better with no blood in them. For larger Chinook you can just cut the throat with a sharp fillet knife and bleed them out.
