    Ahh such good memories of that lodge. Me, Rob and Geoff started doing an annual winter steelhead trip there in 2004. We still go but a family has rented the entire lodge for Christmas for about 5 years now during out trip so we have to stay at the best western...:(

    What’s the difference in meat texture/quality based on the coloration? This is fascinating. Great educational videos

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As salmon move upstream to their spawning grounds, they'll expend energy, which comes from the fat and protein of their body as they do not feed once in freshwater. Because of this, the quality of their flesh degrades the closer they get to spawning. Colouration is a good indicator for judging how good the fish still is. Ideally, you want to find silver ones which give you the best quality. With that said, some fish such as these chinook salmon, have a tendency to colour up faster than other species so slightly coloured ones like you saw in this video can still be excellent.

      I dont think she was being rude or stuck up. She did come off as passive aggressive / assertive alot... maybe cause she is knowledgeable and a skilled fisherman and most would write her off as "just a girl who fishes" so in turn maybe she has to "fight" to be heard most of her fishing life? She seems like she could teach you a thing or two? Wish my wife was this passionate about fishing Haha! It was a great video!

    Why do salmon become darker? is it to do with spawning? Will a darker fish affect the meat? And also when would a cock fish develop a hooked lower jaw and why?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question. Salmon become darker and change their body shape due to spawning. The males tend to develop the hump back and teeth for dominance. Darker fish definitely are not as good. As salmon get closer to spawning time, their meat is no longer great for table fare. It's best to keep fish that are still silver or just slightly coloured.

    Is there a reason why you like to use mono many line instead of braid. Money, stretch

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We like to use mono as our main when we are float fishing because it gives it a better feel. The thicker line just makes it easier to control the float and mend. For spinning, we do use braided instead of mono.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Pat, Matt was anything but impatient. Kitty had all the time in the world to bring that fish in. That fish was on for at least 20 minutes and it broke off in the end due to a careless mistake that any angler would make at some point in their life. Don't look too much into it and take it too seriously, it is just a fish.
      As for why Matt was fishing, well because we wanted him to.
