Ha ha my friend and I were fishing that day . We were slaying springs on the fly . I was using a single hand rod . That girl I was talking to on the side of the river . Very enthusiastic fisherman!!!
I've been going to P.A, Ukee, and Tofino for decades, and boy oh boy has the food scene ever improved. Ucluelet used to be very limited cuisine if any at all. Now there are some fantastic restaurants.
Rod you honestly have one of the best fishing channels on TH-cam. production value and content are stellar. I think you just have to upload more consistently and you'll be set. good luck!
Thanks! Consistency has always been the weakness and I agree if that is achieved we'll see a bigger audience. :) Videos like this one can't come out consistently because they take quite a bit of time to make, but there is a plan to have more consistent upload schedule for all video types (these features, tutorials, livestream, etc)... :)
11:25 to 11:49 was some of the most breathtaking visuals I have seen on any fishing show. what a perfect pairing of audio and visuals. love the music on this video.
The boat ride down that section was incredible. I did my best to capture it. It looks pretty good in the video but it was even more amazing seeing it in person. :)
Liked how silent it was before your bite at 16:25! As always very good video. Pretty light tackle you used for this fish no? 2000 size reel? Fun to watch! Congrats Kitty and Rod, keep going!
That spinning rod is a Shimano Clarus, model # is CSS90ML2B. It's 9' long, rated 6 - 10lb, and my favourite setup right now for coho salmon when casting and retrieving a lure for them.
Hi Adam, the Somass River chinook salmon fishery happens throughout every September. Peak time is usually mid September which is when this was filmed. Float fishing with roe is the most effective way to catch them as you can see. You can watch the tutorial on standard float fishing setup for salmon at: th-cam.com/video/qe2VVDzpnSg/w-d-xo.html
What model Shimano Clarus are you using Rod? I'm looking at buying 3 of the CSS86M2B for my Wife and 2 oldest daughters to use for Coho. Would they have enough backbone for the odd spring?
I have the CSS86M2B, which I find it too stiff for coho salmon. Most people would find it fine, I just prefer something lighter and more sensitive. It should be ok for chinooks. The one I am using in the video, and I've used this for the last four seasons now and absolutely love it, is CSS90ML2B. This is my go-to rod for Vedder River coho. I've also been using it for bigger coho up to 15lb, and it works just fine. The top section is quite soft and sensitive, so you don't miss many bites. The bottom section has quite a bit of backbone so holds well when you have a big fish.
Kitty, THIS time you were using a left hand reel baitcaster. Are you ambidextrous? I'm right handed but cast left and reel with my right. Are you using your own rods?
I know this video was from 5 years ago. Im sorry I’m very late to the party but Rod on the second day was it a lure day only? I know sometimes you guys do only lures days. If it wasn’t, was there a reason not using other methods? Perhaps, bobber roe, bobber bead, twitching...ect? It just sucked you didn’t hook up much and nothing for Kitty. None the less I’m sure it was a wonderful memorial trip. Tight lines brother!
Yep! So on that second day, we fished the Stamp River, which is a tributary/upstream of the Somass River where we fished on the first day. There is a bait ban on the Stamp River, that's why we were only using lures. Those coho, like most coho actually, were pretty hook shy, even though they had not been fished by many people in the area. The main reason is that water temperature was still pretty high at that time. Coho salmon tend to be less aggressive to lures at the higher temperatures. Once temperature drops, they would be a lot more willing to chase down spoons, spinners and jigs.
Absolutely, if we are talking about the Chilliwack/Vedder River specifically, you can catch coho salmon right until early December. My favourite time is in fact the last week of October and first week of November. Keep at it. :)
I notice you don’t advertise g.loomis as much as Gibbs delta, Shimano, Pautzke, and islander. Why is that? Are they one of lesser sponsors (They don’t pay as much?)
The hens during egg production cannibalize there own flesh turning it white and grainy. My experiences come from the Hoh river. This is why they mentioned the condition of the fish.It is not a matter of being picky,The hens can look great, turn black in the fish box in an hour and not be edible.Like I said it is a crap shoot. The system they are fishing could be totally different.
I think a lot of it has to do with how far up a system the fish is spawning, the farther up the better.kind of like chums.Their flesh goes south even in the salt because they tend to spawn in the lower few miles.
The two female chinook salmon that were kept at the beginning were actually caught very close to the ocean. Despite of their colours, those fish probably just came in from the inlet. We were less than half a mile from the river mouth.
If you are in BC, just about all fishing retail stores, Canadian Tire, Walmart, Cabela's etc carry them. If you are in the US, you can head over to their website gibbsdelta.com and check out which retailers down there carry them. If you still can't find them, you can phone them up and see if a special order can be arranged.
Rain or shine, the video is beautiful!
Thanks! :)
Rod the best thing you have added to your videos lately is Kitty's smile and enthusiasm!
I agree. :)
Ha ha my friend and I were fishing that day . We were slaying springs on the fly . I was using a single hand rod . That girl I was talking to on the side of the river . Very enthusiastic fisherman!!!
I'm still shocked that you don't have more subscribers. You have some of the best fishing content on TH-cam.
Thanks... :) Keep sending people over! ;)
YES!!!!! Shaun is back! Loved the video Rodney!
Glad to hear that! :)
I've been going to P.A, Ukee, and Tofino for decades, and boy oh boy has the food scene ever improved. Ucluelet used to be very limited cuisine if any at all. Now there are some fantastic restaurants.
We fishermen are pretty spoiled these days! 😉 Going on a trip to these spots on the West Coast is really a treat, more than just about the fishing.
Someday.....Someday I will get up there and do some fishing like that!
you guys do an amazing job ROD and Kitty !!! Thanks !!!
Thank you Jose! :)
Nice Fishing. Beautiful scenery. Huge salmon. Great video. Thank you for sharing.

Nice work, great scenes!
Thanks Brent!
Great video! What type of Rod were you using on that last bigger fish with the braid? More specifically length and action.
That spinning rod is a Shimano Clarus, model # is CSS90ML2B. It's 9' long, rated 6 - 10lb, and my favourite setup right now for coho salmon when casting and retrieving a lure for them.
nice touch on the music rod!
Thanks Mark! A lot of time was invested on finding the right music for this, so I'm glad it was worth it. :)
Nice production guys. Enjoyed. ATB.
Thank you. :)
WOOOOOO ROD
:)

Would be fun to watch you guys try to hook up with some of these fish on fly rods
We will do that soon for sure. :)
9:50 would like to know what Bait Kitty is using. We have alot of rainbows and salmon here in Ontario and would like to see if it would work here?
Hi Bruno, we're just using cured salmon eggs. :)
@@FishingwithRod Thanks Rod, if you don't mind me asking again. What brand is the cure?
Pautzke Bait Fire Cure. :) I like red.
Rod have you ever fished the snohomish, skyhomish, etc rivers down near seattle
Not yet, but we hope to one day. :)
i see people use the same leader line length on vedder flossing

Syd, that's because those reels were not hers hehe... She usually can handle both left and right hand reels pretty well.
you should try the puntledge river in the comox valley
Sounds good. :)

Rod ,do you think coho will be good after the storm?
Absolutely, if we are talking about the Chilliwack/Vedder River specifically, you can catch coho salmon right until early December. My favourite time is in fact the last week of October and first week of November. Keep at it. :)
I notice you don’t advertise g.loomis as much as Gibbs delta, Shimano, Pautzke, and islander. Why is that? Are they one of lesser sponsors (They don’t pay as much?)
No, gear gets promoted in videos when they are used, that's all.
I am surprised you guys keep the hens.I always found them to be a crap shoot,no matter how bright, as far as table fair.Great video
I heard some picky guys out there for fish but you my sir are just on another level.

Why does it look like the fish are bleeding out if there gills?
Because they are...
Fishing with Rod oh haha
Are you left handed or right handed?!?
I cast with my right, reel with my right, I'm weird that way. ;)
What brand of spoons were you fishing?
The coho was caught on a Gibbs Koho spoon (size 35, orange and silver).
+Fishing with Rod where can I buy these spoons at?
If you are in BC, just about all fishing retail stores, Canadian Tire, Walmart, Cabela's etc carry them. Good looking girl on a kinda rough day and she also knows how to fish,
NICE:)
Kitty Kanhoffen after work? Do you live on the island? I thought you guys live on the main land
Kitty lives on the island, I live in the Fraser Valley.
i dont know what it is. but for the life of me i cant justify a spincast over a baitcast
They both have their own advantages.
My buddy is stripping in at the beginning of video ! Cool!!!
lol everyone here for kitty or fishing?
Everyone's here for Rod, no? ;)
