This is very well done Quinn, I just watched through the whole thing. The interviews are fantastic and these conversations should be had continuously. Identifying the shared values between user groups, recognizing the challenges ahead and developing compromises to reach the common goal, which is fish for the future, are needed. At present time, we have one management which is trying to accommodate multiple mandates but has failed to do so by disengaging all communications between user groups. Good stuff. These are similar visions I've shared and hopefully as videographers, we can convey these messages to all before it is too late, and we are certainly running out of time.

What a great film, with a lot of insight into a problem with a very convoluted solution. As someone from the Pacific Northwest, a lot of my time has been spent watching the decline of the fisheries of the west coast, and I hope that one day a solution is found!

Excellent video Quinn. I'm on the same wavelength. I've spent my entire adult life commercial and recreational fishing and have a foot in both camps. My greatest wish is that all the user groups can come together for the love of salmon. Fighting amongst ourselves and the blame game is not going to cut it. I hope everyone watching this feels the same way and are prepared to make whatever sacrifices are required. Right now we have a Federal government that is running interference for an unsustainable fish farming industry, we need to make that politically unpalatable.
Quinn you are real as it gets so natural. keep living the way you do,educate people we all should nature is life.
Although 2018 was one of the worst on record for Chinook I was still able to fish the Skeena near Terrace in Septenber and I landed the Steelhead of a lifetime. It taped at 37 x 22 inches which is 10 kilos. Here in CA the Steelhead are 4-5 kilos. Sad to see one of the world's great rivers gasp as man slowly strangles the Skeena.

This is a very good documentary man. Steelhead and or salmon have effected a lot of peoples lives. Even here in Western New York where its all stocked and no wild natural reproduction. People always need to blame someone else and cant be happy with anything. Fishing gets worse and worse every year. I had to stop making videos myself due to all the bull shit. True when you said nice guys do finish last at the end. People cant come together now a days. You're videos are always inspiring and you always have a great attitude and outlook on life. I hope your fishery can come back some day.
I travel from my home here in Ireland to the Pacific northwest of Canada annually to coincide with the migratory runs of Anadromous fish in the fall. I usually travel with one or two other guys who are aficionados of the sport too. The usual time we spend there is around 14 nights and during that time we can land on average 30 fish a day per man.
Out of all the fish we catch, only one fish will be harvested for an evening meal which we cook. EVERY other fish is caught on an artificial fly and landed quickly where it is unhooked in the water and allowed to continue its journey and reproduce.
These trips are enjoyed by us, we interact politely with the Canadian and First nation people who are always very welcoming and some of whom have become friends over the years. We take photos, videos and memories, we leave footprints not litter and we put money into the local economy for fishing tackle and guides, accommodation, food, and beverages.
If everyone respected the country, fishery and resource the way we do it would get better year in and year out and would not be in decline.
Only keep one, in river , fish a year. Never had one die on gear or fly. Average 15-20 a year, in the fly water, North Umpqua. But this video still reminds me to minimize my impact. I pickup trash, pocket old line, pince barbs, dont take my sweet time bringing them in. Thanks for keeping us conscious as we obsess. Steller film yet again Quinn!

Excellent video. Being a PNW fisher I follow the fishing world quite a bit. Fish and game laws do very little to protect species. People break the laws every day because many do not fear the penalty. Add to the fact that many would kill for their spot in the fishing world whether it be sport or commercial fishing and the responsibility of conservation always falls on someone else. I've been incredibly disheartened with fishing over the last few years and now I would be hard pressed to get out once a year. Now matter how or why you fish, if you do, you are having an impact on the species.
If we all had this in mind there would be more healthier fisheries but there's people out there just looking out for themselves and money. I've been watching your videos for a while now appriated every one Quinn. What I would give to come out there and fish with you. Would be my dream. Actually you are living my dream. Love the family on the river awesome. Please keep us updated with videos and if i ever get a chance to make it your way i would love to meet up. Thanks again Quinn

Great film ! The simple fact is there is fewer and fewer salmon returning every year , I agree with Rob 100% we are all to blame ! Too many sport fishermen , too many First Nations catching food fish and the commercial fleet ! But as the population increases every year more and more people try to feed their families ? In my opinion the amount people catch every year has to be reduced ! Or this resource will be lost ! In all sectors , I said to one of my non native co-workers , shut everything down for one season ? For everyone ? His reply was , thank you sir . I would sacrifice one summer of food fish so my grandchildren would be able to enjoy this great natural resource ! Thanks Cap n Quinn

I started using size 8 to 12 hooks while fishing in local wild/catch and release rivers for Steelhead. I haven't noticed a change in my landing ratio, but I have noticed that the Steelhead just don't bleed from such small hooks. I think B.C. should make a hook size restriction in the regs, particularly in wild rivers. Even if you do lose a % more fish on smaller hooks - the pros of a small hook doing minimal damage to a wild fish that needs to be released is invaluable. Also B.C. should adopt Washingtons regulation that you legally cannot take the fish out of the water unless you are keeping it. In my opinion those 2 rules being added to the regs would drastically reduce mortality rate on fish.

I think treble hooks need to be banned in the tidal water salmon fishery. Treble hooks cause huge mortality in juvenile and non-target species. That measure alone would result in some really meaningful conservation without diminishing enjoyment of the resource. Single barbless hooks, maximum 2 points.
@@allancrow134 I think big single hooks do even more damage than a small treble. Trebles are nasty either way but if there small and barbless there not as bad as a 4/0 or bigger single.
@@benjaminaxselholm I agree, we could have a discussion about maximum hook size as well. Tandem trebles or trebles with a single trailer(which are legal in tidal waters in BC) are often lethal, especially where there is juvenile bycatch. Where there is little or no enforcement barbs often go unpinched. Hate to say that but it's true. Cheers.

@@TheCaptainQuinn I fly fish here on the Bow and Southern alberta. Even with my barbless hooks and 100 percent release I kill some fish. It is hard to live with that aspect of the sport

This is a great film. I fish for food only, but I only target one sustainable fish and then stop fishing after I get it. I'm not gonna travel there to take or catch a fish if they're threatened.

Great video, some really good talks in this one.... really makes me wanna document and make it public how bad poaching is in the tributaries of Lake Ontario here in southern Ontario. The salmon run around here in the city attracts all sort of people who fish unethically simply because they have no idea what they’re doing or because they’re never any forestry officers around to put a crack down on this huge problem that is right underneath everyone’s nose in these big cities
Education can play a huge role in helping the situation :)

same problem in ny here in buffalo for every 300 steelhead there is probably 1 brown trout but when deer and wildlife stock 1000 brown trout the let people keep plenty of fish if everyone was required to practice catch and release for atleast 5 years our lake erie trubutaries would be full of brown trout also people would rely on salmon for food in the lake erie tributaries there are probably every 1000 steelhead there is 1 coho or chinook salmon and ny refused to stock them anymore and natives living on cattauragus creek in the seneca nation are screwed but there are stories from old guys saying that lake erie tributaries used to be as abundant as burt dam or oak orchard which are on lake ontario its heart breaking
Good film. I have watched others with a similar theme, lots of finger pointing to who or what is to blame. The one thing that never seems to come up is the millions of litres of raw sewage being pumped into the ocean. How much does this affect the salmon population and their ecosystems

Time is ticking and the clock is half past nine these fish are in trouble and they need more help than ever right now. imagine completely wild salmon runs that are sustainable think about it back before the industrialization of salmon. Too many people look at fish in general and see them too often as a product and don't really look at what it takes for that fish to become what it comes back to the river as; everything is deeply connected and it seems humans always try to manipulate those connections for their benefit without looking at what could happen or looking when its too late . Everyone plays a part not just in the decline of salmon but all wild species on this planet; we only get one earth and if something is not done soon what will we have left? well have memories and everyone on this planet will feel tremendous guilt especially when soo many people don't even realize the harm they cause the environment myself included its a very hard battle especially for the ones who do care. I really do hope that one day in the near future everyone can come together for themselves and for these extrordinary fish and for our planet . Knowing a lot of the salmon and steelhead’s plight is out of our hands, If we’re serious about wanting to be part of a solution, 4:46 then we need to acknowledge if there is continued want to $$$ beside these animals, then your simply shuffling recycled solutions without understanding greed has no role into their recovery.
You’d be amazed once the $$$ is removed.. or at the very least-known only at a distance how we can get the hell out of the way and let their stocks recover.
Make it a strict rule for catch & release for all river anadromous species, and also for all the guide services, and cut out the commercial fisheries. Single barless hooks, and no bait.

Maybe start opening up other fisheries that have been protected for awhile (ie white sturgeon,lingcod in some areas) sparingly. Perhaps this will alleviate some pressure on prized fisheries by giving anglers opportunities. Diversify the damn thing. Just as was said here @ 34:48 perhaps if people were given incentives and experiences with animal itself, maybe they might fall in love with the animal and gain some appreciation. In theory...
The 4 dislikes are from fish farms because everyone hates them
The fact that Skeena runs are down in an area free from fish farms only supports the idea that farms are no effect on wild stocks to the south. I don't hate fish farms because there is no evidence to support any harm to wild stocks. This film delightfully doesn't go down this rabbit hole because it only provokes more division among people. There is room for responsible and sustainable aquaculture and healthy wild stocks if we could only get along .
There is plenty of proof that fish farms are bad for wild salmon look up Alex Morton she has done some great work on fish farms

Try living in OC CA, this is the biggest offense to natural eco systems, in the west coast, the water is nasty, and only Arroyo Chub, Mosquito fish, and Carp, can survive in our low oxygen, algae driven creeks, and the Carp only live outside of brackish areas, so they can't actually survive in these streams, inland, we have Steel Head Trout stuck in San Juan Creek, and no one is willing to help, I have made many contacts, one day I hope to see natural fresh water fish, I wish , I could scoop, fish for, these fish out and save them, I do from time to time, but it is illegal to fish for Steelhead here, even if it is to relocate them to safety..I might take the risk soon though.

I don't think that statistic is true, it really depends on how much of an idiot the angler is. If you keep the salmon wet and in the water, use barbless, don't play the fish for too long, quick photo and release then zero of your salmon should die.
