      Kahlil Hernández planned obsolescence is where they cut the lifespan or plan the hardware disintegration. My 2012 mbp still works flawlessly and smoothly 5 years later. Apple doesnt do planned obsolescence

    • @v-m-a-p
      @v-m-a-p 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      it does what nearly everyone does: perceptive obsolescence. "new" features that should make your stuff more "useful", even though the "old" one still is fine.

      @TheZallene 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hasan 58 idk though dude, cause I bought a gaming pc in 2013 right, and yeah everyone says you can upgrade them. But if I upgrade the GPU now, it most likely won't be compatible with my CPU. And then I'd have to look at upgrading RAM too. Idk, it seems like I need to buy a new pc anyway to upgrade at this point.. p.s my MacBook Pro from 2012 still runs like butter

  • @DekriteN09
    @DekriteN09 7 ปีที่แล้ว +261

    Every year I hear the same story - if you have the previous generation MacBook pro, there is no particular reason for you to upgrade

    • @alexkwan3
      @alexkwan3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Evil Red it's the same for every product really. It's not limited to just Apple MacBooks. Phones, laptops, computer parts, etc. all can last a long time and there's no need to upgrade after a year.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evil Red same with Dell XPS, so what is your point? It is a mature market, a computer that is all it is, what else do you want. It is the best laptop by far but too expensive for me.

      Milos M not for most years. Most companies do incremental upgrades most years, and only a design overhaul or a big new feature once every few years. Take Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, etc.

      AppleBud that is because the 2017 base model has a starting 128gb ssd which is slower than the 256gb, specially on the write speeds around 700mb. I habe the 2017 nTB 13" with 256gb i get 1.4mb write and 2.4mb read, pretty much the same as the 256gb model of 2016.

    Few weeks ago bought a refurb 13” 2016 with touch bar. Love it - give the touch bar a chance, trackpad is great being so big if you use the many great Apple gestures, and the keys truly grow on you. Just love the whole package and saved a bit with a refurb so no complaints.

      If only they made a high end one without the touch bar, like Dave mentions. The touchbar has absolutely ruined my workflow and it hasn't improved after 6 months. It's a garbage innovation. The novelty wore off, quite seriously, in under 10 minutes.

      ahmad uhuh, I'm sure he knows what works best for him. Before you even suggest the XPS 15 or the Hp Spectre x360, note that I have owned both, and they both had to be returned for unforgivable defects. But if we limit it to the XPS 15, I sealed with very audible coil whine, ghosting, an inaccurate touchpad, frequent crashes and other less important but still relevant issues. The viable alternative is a desktop in my opinion, but he's surely buying a laptop for a reason.

    Great Video, but could you make more budget-tech videos? Especially XIAOMI or other high-quality, but cheap solutions. (For example the Mi Pad 3, which looks like a great iPad mini killer at a price point of only around $220, or the new Xiaomi Mi 6)
    I know you probably wont pay much attention to this but.. ehhh, would be great to see on your channel.

  • @tpar83
    @tpar83 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave, there is one touch of customization that I never seen you mention that actually matters for non-American buyers. Apple US website now gives you the option to customize your keyboard in almost any language you want. Personal example: I'm from Brazil and Apple products are so absurdly expensive in here that it is actually cheaper to book a promo flight to the US, buy a Macbook there and bring it home. I think this is the case as well for waves of tourists that visit Apple Stores in the US. It's lovely that now you can configure your MacBook on their website with your preferred keyboard layout and then set it for Store Pickup. It's something so simple that other companies like Dell, Asus and HP do not offer.

    Do you think the surface laptop is a good competitor or does the MacBook Pro 13 no touch bar blow it out of the market?

    • @waroment2989
      @waroment2989 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kai Low Here in Canada if the laptops are similarly specced, they cost about the same. You get similar kabylake i5 dual core processors, 8GB of RAM, but the difference is in storage; the MacBook has 128GB whereas the surface laptop has 256GB. Frankly, here's how I see it. The Mac has a better display, great build quality and touchpad, and it's equipped with thunderbolt 3 USB-c. The Surface laptop has a touch screen display, more storage, less than ideal build quality with the alcantara strip, and a USB 3 + mini display port. If you're interested in what High Sierra will bring to developers and consumers alike such as official egpu support, I suggest the Mac. If you think storage will be an issue, remember cloud storage is a viable workaround, but if you need a lot of memory for the softwares you use, perhaps stick with the surface laptop. I think ultimately both are solid machines, so whichever you choose won't disappoint you hopefully.

    • @kailow9055
      @kailow9055 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SteelRazorBlade // AdamSRB Not exactly since macs do offer best in class build quality, macOS and not bad performance tbh. If you game a lot then the answer would be *NO*, if you are on a 2016 model, it would be also a *NO*. If you are upgrading from like a 2010 or just want a Mac or you are looking for a well built laptop that looks great, then *SURE*

    I don't get these Macbook reviews,no hate Dave,but they are just plain useless. Should you buy one? Hell yes if you want to waste lots and lots of money for apple OS and nice build quality,but lack of proper components,and everyone knows this by now. If you are looking in a "normal" workflow laptop,you should just take a look at everything "non gamer", like the surface or some of Asus' laptops for everyday use,which have better components and are on the same build quality level as Apple for a lower price.

    • @jackblack4110
      @jackblack4110 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Macs are less prone to viruses, more simple, very reliable (hardware and software), and friendly to coding.
      Windows laptops are good too, but only the top tier ones where you have to shell nearly equal amounts of money such as the surface book. Cheaper laptops are a hit or miss.
      My greatest gripe is with windows 10 and the forced updates; bricked my rig once and had to format and reinstall my whole system

    • @brois841
      @brois841 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jack Black, I can say the same for the MacBooks.. I've had macOS crash/fail, the hardware can (and does) break just like on any other machine, etc. I think you hit the nail on the head with the price though. If you want quality, you're basically in a similar price point to the MacBook, aside from that, neither holds superiority - except to the proselytizers. I do prefer my MacBook Pro (and Linux) for development, but use PC's for almost everything else.

      DopeSpill Comics Theres differnece between hating price and hating value. Macbooks or any apple device has less value. Just see MI 10 Ultra smartphone for now. Its expensive as iphone 8 I will say (or less). But see its value like itjust kills even iphone 11 or iphone 10 or samsungnote 20.. everything.. thats the part

    Hey Dave, love your channel and have been watching a lot of your laptop videos. Never been a Mac fan, but my schooling may provide me with one when i re-enroll in college. This video has definitely been very informational, but is there anyway that when you do graphs (like the one you did for the 3 CPU speeds) that you could switch it to a more colorblind friendly scheme? I had to kind of guess which was which.

    I bought the 2016 MBP 15 inch about 3 months back and don't regret it. I thought of waiting for this but needed an urgent upgrade. I'm really liking it so far and everything just works. I do occasionally feel like a should have bought Dell XPS 15 for it's cheaper price and to play PUBG but I don't know if I would have been comfortable with using Windows after years on a Mac.

  • @DVRKSTXR
    @DVRKSTXR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm mainly going to be buying a MacBook Pro 2017 for Logic Pro X. That is my primary reason for choosing a MacBook over any other type of PC. The software of MacBooks is hard to pass on. Especially, since I intend to upgrade to an iPhone later in the year. That aside, I am fine with the fact that the 2017 refresh isn't that different from the 2016 refresh. Granted, I don't have a MacBook that I am upgrading from, so I may be an oddity in that argument.

    Nice video! I was an MBP 15 owner since they adopted Intel chips... until early this year. Switched to a Dell XPS 9560 and love it. The 4K screen is incredible and GTX 1050 performance is outstanding. I think build quality between the XPS and MBP is about equal these days. To be sure, I still love Macs. I also love my XPS. It's nice to have more choices when it comes to high-end laptops, now.

    I hear you always talking about how some keyboards are better than others and such. But what, for you, defines a good keyboard? I have troubles following along when you get too opinionated. What about the MacBook's keyboard that makes it so good? Is it how it feels when you press down, the texture of the keys them self, a satisfying click or snap perhaps? Please go a little more in depth and say exactly what makes them great. The video as a whole was spectacular though. I just love the way you do your edits and videos in general. Keep pumpin' them out :). Any pardon my memory I can't seem to remember but theres another laptop if I recall with a 1080 ti that's not the Zephyrus, it is around a cm thicker and had two foot things on the bottom of it to boost air flow. I just can't remember, but if you can, with the clues provided remember the name then tell me if you'll be doing a review if you get it. Or just tell me the name if you can. I just can't seem to find it. I think Linus did a video on it. Edit: The base model is $2,000 USD I think. Thanks!
