Great insight. Was going to "upgrade" but I like to run dual OS X and Windows and this thing would seem to pose a problem. I also bought the highest end 2017 and it hardly seems like an upgrade especially for the price. Beautiful video quality and editing. Keep it up!

Is it worth buying now in 2023 for heavy Logic Pro and Ableton users? There's deals on ebay with these ones 16Gb ram for as low as $350-400 usd.

The i9 cpu hits 100C/212F. That is absolutely terrible. It doesn’t even hit the base clock speed. There is no excuse for this lack of design choice by Apple
apple puts in an i9 to make the numbers in the specs look higher to tech noobs ( AKA american teen girls ) and justify the price
MKBHD didnt go in depth on this aspect. I don't mind a laptop throttling (they all do it to a degree) but it should always be at least hitting base clock speed. Anything below indicates a serious thermal management problem.

I'm looking at a 15" MBP later this month when the better RP Vega options are available. Given the heat issues with the i9, do you think it's better to go with the i7? Even with Apple's fix for the throttling, I see reviewers stating that the new allowed level of heat in the processor could damage the logic board over time. What do you think?

I know this isn't a benchmark channel, and I appreciate that! However, it was disappointing that you chose not to discuss any details abut how bad the throttling on this laptop really is (which i thought you would have based on the title). Especially while discussing render times: this cpu throttles so hard within the new Macbook Pro that you're leaving EASILY 25%+ improvement on the table for render times alone. You can't discuss marginal improvements in render time without at least *mentioning* that you won't be getting even CLOSE to your moneys worth.

Thank you, for this video. I have been leaning toward the new I-Mac 2018, which I saw a video review and maxing it up. Last year, I went toward a Dell, and the one I got has a Quad-core I-7, 16 GB of Ram, 2 TB Hard drive (except it is 5400 rpm - which I am looking to upgrade that to a 2TB SSD), since the 2017 MacBook Pro has a Quad-Core I7. But Apple is not making them longer and with a numeric keypad - which I use a lot. I also have several ports that the MacBook Pro doesn't have 3 USB ports, and an HDMI port, along with an SD slot (which I don't use). I have a numeric keypad and a CD-ROM drive which I find useful, since I have CD's, from books and hardware install disks, like my Canon Printer/Scanner/Copier and my Wacom tablet. I do plan to get an LG external drive that has, CD, DVD and Blu-Ray read and write functions, and it is PC, Mac and TV compatible.
I would love to see Apple come out with a 17 Inch MacBook Pro with the features that the 15.4 Inch has and add a numeric keypad, CD-ROM drive and at least a USB 3 Port on each side along with the Thunderbolt port and an HDMI port as well. Mine isn't real thin but just thick enough to have a CD-ROM drive. That would give the MacBook Pro more room for the air to circulate and keep it cooler. I usually use my computer at home, so the I-Mac would be great and I can get the Keyboard with the numeric keypad and the Magic Mouse, (which I use more than the track pad).
I am also waiting for the next Mac OS, Mojave. And I hope Apple will add a touch Bar on the Magic Keyboard. I do love that it has a rechargeable battery and normally don't have to charge it but once a month. I will do that when I go to bed.

Nefarious Cheat alright, listen: Just the past two weeks alone ive built 3 Desktop systems and therefor count myself as someone with sufficient knowledge on the topic. I never liked anything from Apple, neither their iPhones nor the Macs but thats because in my opinion the OS sucks. Now, the main reason this Mac is considered overpriced by many is because of the thermal throtteling. This is one of the very first laptops that have an i9 CPU built in and its just stupid to do so without providing sufficient cooling, wich is impossible if you try to keep your system this slim and light. The actual power of the CPU cant be used at all, buying this is like burning money. If I was given 3000$ I could easily find an equivalent laptop, since the performance of well-running i7 systems will be better than throttled i9 systems. I understand that people like apple but sometimes they fuck things up as well, just like smasung did with the note 7. Deal with it

It takes my 2008 Core 2 Duo 250 SSD, 6GB RAM MacBook Pro around an hour to render a 5 minute 1080p short video utilizing many clips with varied stabilization and audio work on top into a 1080p mobile screens video.
Marques, I use my MacBook Pro for graphic design (2012 Model) and it's now really starting to chug on more complex pieces. Is this MacBook Pro (perhaps not this exact configuration) worth upgrading to in my case?
