- top fuel mustang put together for burnouts and power cruising, it's running on 80% nitro -20% methanol. it's been de tuned massively with very little throttle movement to make it semi tame. put together with spares from 90's set up.

This is built by Darren Di Filippo, an ex-Top Fuel racer here in Australia. Pretty sure he doesn't need to be told it isn't running the full set up that a Top Fuel car would usually run. It's still an engine out of a Fuel car.
It can be better than a race legal top fuel setup. They could theoretically run 100 percent nitro in this engine, which is outlawed in IHRA/NHRA.

This car sure sounds like a top fueler but I've never seen someone handle a TF rod with this kind of carelessness. Hitting the throttle with the wheels turned and at these angles? I'm just thinking maybe it's an alcohol funny car instead of a true Nitro Methane top fueler. I'm probably wrong but I think if you hit the throttle on a real top fuel NHRA funny car in a small, tightly confined area like this little parking lot, you'd have a problem on your hands. In any case, this is a NASTY rod. I really like it.

So what I gather is the guy didnt have the driving ability to whip a donut which is clearly what he was after. If ya cant whip a donut in a tube chassis car with 5k plus horsepower and I say that because we dont know what actual fuel hes running... if it was actually nitro I doubt everyone would be standing around smiling without a waterfall of tears rolling due to the fumes.. as I've stood reasonably close to a top fuel rail after a rebuild start up and it takes seconds to be crying like a bitch so I give him half a chub rating because he definitely has some bad horses in that poopstang.

Guaranteed he was mashing that brake pedal as hard as the system will allow maximum stoppage.
The brakes on these cars, are thin wall discs. They are designed for one hard brake session and not constant use like a regular car.
They don't grab hard either, so when you pull the chute, or in slower cars with no chute, but still fast, at the finish line, you don't want grabby or else you can get squirrelly and wreck.
Even cars that finish at 150mph, slow in comparison to this UFO, you brake first and then release the gas pedal. Also, you never just let off the gas quick, you do it slower so you don't de-torque and risk getting squirrelly.
Turning that steering wheel over and over and basically going nowhere, loud as fuck, getting in and out damn near breaks your balls, uncomfortable, constantly looking at guages etc etc....it's hard work.
I dreamed of this stuff for decades, finally got my hands on full cage chromoly chasis beast for the street, pump gas, 540ci, narrowed 9", 800hp.
I remember the first time I drove it. Got down the street a bit and just stomped the shit out of that gas pedal and it went instantly ballistic WAHHHARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
I had plenty of muscle cars, some were built up, but never seemed to have satisfying power.
800hp in a 2300lb car set up for 2000+ hp, chasis nhra certified for 6 second quarter mile, is satisfying power.
But goddam uncomfortable and basically not fun after the novelty wore off.
I wouldn't want that beast in the video and I guarantee 95% of the people commenting, if they had a chance to stomp that bad boy in a huge parking lot for one full second, you would shit your pants, panic that the lot isn't big enough to slow the car down while mashing the shit out of the brakes.
Then your last thought would be to ever go full bore at a quarter mile track. You couldn't. You wouldn't want to either.

Top fuel ran single mags and plugs for decades people. Not all fuel teams run 100% nitro either. 80% is a pretty healthy mix.
Believe there aren't any that run 100% nitro, heard of up to 96%

That is possibly one of two things...... Either that thing is the baddest thing I have seen or that is one of the scariest things........ I wonder how much that thing weighs dry. Before putting any weight on the chassis..... motor-cage-driveline......2100 lbs is my guess and that might be to heavy. Fuel motor on an Altered's wheel base, Craaaaaaazy!!!!

its running on one magneto. so it cant be nitro. or maybe less than 80. you may have methanol to keep it running but quite a power hungry that goes power hungry.
Old top fuel had only one magneto …sometimes running 90

very cool but not quite top fuel. he's only running a single distributor/magneto. real top fuel uses 2 spark plugs per cylinder and a much higher gpm fuel pump. still awesome tho. would love to see it do a full pull if it could ever get enough traction lol
You don't know what you're talking about. It has nothing to do with mags or even distributors just fuel.
because it takes two plugs per cylinder and magnetos to keep the candles lit... This is a cool Alky motor, nothing more.

N2Otorious Top fuel basically refers to the use of Nitromethane. Today's modern high horse power Top Fuel engines may use two magnetos and 16 spark plugs ,ect,ect,,,,but Nitro has been used in much simpler setups since the sixties,,maybe the fifties. One mag,eight spark plugs,ect.
And that's not alcohol he's burning.

Just curious? Is there a racing class for cars like this or is it just for exhibition running? Seems like a lot of money and effort to engineer something that will not provide much return on investment. Am I missing something here?

Besides, These are Aussies...There may be a certain class for these types of entries in their parts, But most likely even for "Down-under", Its an exhibition car. There use to be a class for an application such as this here in the states labeled as "Nitro-Coupe". Not sure if its still around though.

Its an alcohol motor with maybe 40% nitro

yeah well i don't believe it... you don't shut down a nitro motor like that. that's all alky no nitro...
no 2nd magneto so most likely lower nitro percentage as mentioned
this is for sure a fuel motor. they killed the pump and shut it off with alky in the bottle. -fuel inlets to the pete jackson barrel valve. which isnt needed in alky unless theyve got a 230 in it for a main dumpin all of it back to the tank. single mag top fuel is still wicked. shit anything with nitro is. ive been on plenty of fuel teams
