When I was 12 while fish w/my dad & brother-in-law in a 12' v-bottom, a man near us was "test driving" a 17' wooden ski boat. While testing it, it was having steering issues & he got under the dash to see what was happening while leaving the motor "full throttle"...he never saw us. All I remember is my dad, then brother-in-law, jumping out while I sat there not know why they left. At the last sec I jumped & felt the boat leave me. His boat hit our bow, all 3 seats and our 9.9 motor with its prop. He then circled us but NEVER picked us up. My dads new flasher had just flashed "90 ft" when he hit us. Fortunate for us ppl skiing near by saw what happened and picked us up. One was a ER doctor. None of us were hurt. I thank the Lord to this day for His care for us all. Great is His faithfulness. The driver of the wooden boat was charged w/negligence & paid all fines due. Bottom line to date for me still is...I don't know when my last day is, nor does anyone else...Seek the Lord while He may be found - Isaiah 55:6

It doesn't matter what I believe or don't believe, but you folks chopping on the guy for expressing his opinion as to whether there is a God or not is no worse than you expressing your beliefs that there is a God. Think about it before you chop on someone. Maybe a little something else and help him/her see what you believe and why? Kindness and understanding goes a lot further than jumping on him. That only proves his point.

A co angler from Mississippi was killed in a BFL Regional on Lake Barkley a few years back. While waiting for our boat to blast off, 2 ambulances entered the parking area. We did not hear what happened until after the tournament was over. If I reemember correctly, the top 3 boaters donated their winnings to the widow.

Over 30 years ago my brother and a friend of his was fishing on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. They was in a 14 foot jon boat with a little 9.9 HP motor. They was anchored cat fishing when a bass boat with a 150 Merc running full tilt on the back ran over them. My brothers friend was killed instantly. My brother almost lost his right arm and was crippled the rest of his life. He suffered brain damage and was barely able to walk years later. My brothers friend was a 26 year old school teacher that left a pregnant bride of 6 moths behind. The driver of the boat that ran over them was fishing in a bass tournament. He only suffered a couple of bruises. 11 empty beer cans was found in the bottom of his boat. He had lost his drivers license because of a drunk driving charge yet he drove his rig to the lake to compete in the tournament. This happened shortly after noon on a clear sunny day. The driver was heard to say he never saw my brothers boat. My brother had nightmares of losing his close friend the remainder of his life. He passed 2 years ago age 68.

Now the memory of him along with my father continues to fish with me every time I hit the water. I am not condemning bass tournaments due to this one incident. By far the largest majority of these Pro's are stand up guys and go the extra distance to keep the game safe. Were it not for the Pro's refining strategy and gear we would likely still all be fishing with corks and a tin can of worms.

@@My_Fair_Lady Wrong, Kaycie... in this case, when headed toward each other the boats should pass to the right of each other just like two lane traffic on the road. If two boats are crossing paths, the boat coming from the left must yield to the boat coming from the right. Navigation lights indicate this as well: the red light is on the left side indicating to boats on the left to yield, and the green light on the right side indicates that the boat coming from the right has the "right of way" to cross the path.
Boats going in the same direction: the faster boat should make clear his intentions to pass and pass only after the slower boat signals that it is ok to pass.

Boating can be very dangerous. Thats why when I boat, I always make sure I never have a drop of alcohol in my system, make sure I'm well rested and in some situations like pulling a skier or tube, almost channel out conversation in the boat because u have to have eyes in about 10 different places at once. Accidents happen and usually because or jet skiers, drunks, or just not paying attention.

I Bass fish and do have a boat that’ll bump 80 MPH, but I don’t need the speed it just comes with the size of boat I feel comfortable in on big water lakes here in Texas…. I see guys all the time running wide open, white knuckling, rolled up on the wheel whit their heads locked in a forward position and scared to look around! Those guys scare me and I typically start looking to get away from them…… And yes, most seasoned operators can pick you guys out and aren’t impressed you passed another boat! If you’re not comfortable looking around your running to fast!

I worked at a Military Resort, on a lake close to the Base. There were pictures posted of an accident between two rented 14 ft mosquito ski boats with 70 hp Evinrude outboards. The operators were drinking and thought it was "fun to zig-zag and jump each other boats wake.
The pictures clearly illustrated the out come. These were deep-vee conventional ski-boats, but very light. There was a miscalculation and one of the boats ran over the other, t-boning it, where the driver/passengers were seated prior to impact, and the lower unit and prop crossed. The images still are burned into my memory. The pictures were graphic, but posted to show the GI's renting the boats what alcohol, goes and foolish behavior can result in.

I fished tournaments in the 80’s when there was a 150hp limit. When BASS knuckled under to competitors’ requests for higher HP and faster speeds, I bailed assuming safety was becoming secondary to going as fast as possible. It is a shame lives have been lost as a result. These losses are preventable, that’s what is so disappointing.

Blows my mind ... Does anybody not watch the video before commenting .... I'm reading inexperience .... Too fast ... Lots of different opinions but not many are actually commenting on actual video. Cop said they were both doing what was suppose to ... Both drivers assumed other driver would or would not turn thus both were steering back and forth until impact ... For those bitching about speed ... How fast is your mustang, charger, vet or mini van ..... Why the need for speed? Answer - on land (compensate for something)
On water - most fish boats need speed to shoot between locations while in tournaments or to get off lake should bad weather arrive.
Crap happens and its sad when there is a injury or death ... Bottom line ...be safe out there - land or sea. Watch for others and assume nothing ..kill the speed when not sure not each other. Just my 2 &3/4 cents

I guess it would have been, " oh well, crap happens," if it had been a family that had been hit because the other party was in a tournament? One of the dumbest long winded comments yet. Ignorance is not an excuse for the loss of life and danger caused by these "competitors".

This is why there are "way rules" for which boat is the "give way" boat and which is the "stand on" boat. This is something almost universally known in the salt, but which very few freshwater boaters have any idea about until there is a crash and it goes to court. If the paths of two vessels under power are going to cross, the vessel coming from the starboard is the stand-on vessel, it is the vessels to port's responsibility to avoid that collision.

Boating can be really dangerous there is no airbags or seat belts really nothing to keep you from getting killed. Years ago friend and I got to the lake early saw a fishing tournament was about to start it was still dark wanted to get to my spot before those guys go up there. We were going to fast and the lake being a reservoir late in the year was low islands were exposed. I spotted a reflection of a buoy I went to idle we were going about 55mph when we stopped we were in 2 feet of water if I had waited one more second I know we would have ran into island which was just a foot under water. After that I never went faster than 25-30mph at night fishing is never worth someone's life. I had another incident where some guys came right at us looked drunk going full speed turns at the last second we were in a cove that was no wake. I decided the lakes around here were getting too crowded and I had given up fishing by then anyway bass boat was sold.

Lake Conroe is a little less than 15 miles from the south shore to the north shore by boat. If you need to travel this entire length, at 45 m.p.h. it will take about 20 minutes. If you travel it at 25 m.p.h. it will take you 36 minutes. A difference of 16 minutes. Most likely, though, fisherman and other boaters traversing from one point to another travel intermediate distances from one fishing spot to another, or to a boat ramp. These distances are likely to be, though not always, less than half of the longest runs on the lake. For these runs the difference in arrival time between 45 m.p.h. and 25 m.p.h. is likely to be less than 8 minutes. To save these few minutes fisherman will add a couple of hundred horsepower to their boats and spend thousands of dollars doing it. At the same time it adds life threatening danger to themselves and other boaters on these small bodies of water.
Tournaments should have speed limits for all competitors of no more than 25 m.p.h. This would eliminate any advantage to spending thousands of dollars more for the horsepower. This would make it more fare for all income classes and, obviously, safer for everyone on the water during tournaments when there are large crowds all trying to get somewhere fast.

As with other forms of transport related activities (aviation and road) marine has it's own hazards, and one of the most unexpected is that of collision.
The otherwise peaceful surroundings found in a fishing environment can lull people into a false sense of security, failing to keep a look out or adequately judge distance and speed.
Something as obvious as keeping minimum separation distances from other boats or potential hazards is ignored or not even considered.
As in this instance, the consequences can be severe!

I reckon Scott Engle needs to be interviewed by law enforcment. He seems to be at an awful lot of fatal accident scenes...

Remember...boats do not have brakes and cannot stop on a dime.

Always think about this when co-angling the FLWs, one mistake and its over. - Scott.

One of my biggest fears too.. I hate being in a boat and not being the one in control of it. Last month on Grand in the Costa series I was fishing as a co-angler and there was a bad 2 bass boat wreck and they had to be air lifted. I think they all lived but I had lots of friends and my older brother fishing in the same tournament. It made it hard to fish the rest of the day as I heard about the wreck but didn't know who was in it. I was worried sick it was someone I knew. Gotta be careful out there..

Its a mess at times on the water, especially on the Delta. Your coming through canals into open spaces, its scary. Some of these guys don't slow down when I would if I was running the boat. - Scott.

Right there you have it. ON the water these rules are international. The driver of this boat did not give way to his right. Simple.

If relative bearing doesn't change, potential for collision exists.
Doesn't apply to this situation, but keep it in mind when on the water.

And again I say that there is no need for a 18 or 19 foot boat to have a 200 or 250hp motor.

That basscat in the video is capable of going 70mph. The guy crashed going 45mph. It’s not like he was pushing his rig to the max. 45 is a safe traveling speed. You guys sound rediculous

@@joshystenes8284 ........."no need"....he said "no need".....did you miss that part idiot? Who misspells a word when it is spelled properly an inch away? Have a 10 year old show you how to turn your Spell Check on....idiot.
