    Note: Another idea would be to sleeve the second portion of the mast to the lower portion with a smaller diameter brass rod or steel rod.
    By the industrial grade LOCKTITE will permanently adhere all of the individual mast sections together just fine without the need of soldering or epoxy.

    Nice job. When I saw u thinking of using 6000 adhesive, I said "brass!...solder it" and u did. Thanks. Love the masts/wires. Interesting that the overhead views in this episode brings into focus the diminutive size of the lifeboats in the scale of the real ship and begs the question "what were they thinkin'" at H & W....16 x 65 = 1040 souls.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well… the “books” imply that they really didn’t think they would be needed. That whole space along the boat deck is meant to be filled with lifeboats. But someone thought it would look “cluttered” so they cut the number down to look good to the eye, and that happened to be 2 more boats than required by the law at the time so 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s obvious now, of course, but back then… I think they figured it was already overkill.

      @@TheMidwestModelShop Agreed, I just wonder if that rational applied to other ships but was not tested as was Titanic. Do today's builders use the same logic on these cruise ships with 3/4000 ppl aboard.?

      Today there has to be a lifeboat seat for every single person on board.

      Even with the huge amount of time Titanic stayed afloat, it would not have been enough time to launch more life boats if they had them anyway. Too much confusion on deck. I think James Cameron did a video timing life boat launches to see if more boats would have helped. They discovered they just did not have time. Britannic and Lusitania went down in less than half the time of the Titanic did. So with almost perfect conditions Titanic still did not have enough time to launch any more boats.

    Looks fantastic.....great modeling skills....just one thing lol....
    Where aerial connects to mainmast the four wires come off spreader to a point like foremast but a 'single' line connects from there to mast.....not like foremast connection point where all four wires come from spreader to triangulate at mast directly...

    Great approach re establishing the rake of the mast. The rake of the masts is most often the same as the rake of the funnels. An alternative to using the "vertical from deck placement" reference point (which worked very well for you), might have been to calculate the angle using one of the funnels, then construct a jig/template (wood or plastic strips) to align your drill. Different ways to skin the same cat... apologies to the ASPCA.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually made a jig to set the angle of the masts with respect to one another. And you’re right, the angle is the same as the funnels. I was hesitant to push them back further because it’s more than KA suggested. But the funnels are 3D printed and I don’t want to assume one is correct or they are both correct, etc. That is part of the reason I used the verticals placement check.

      @@TheMidwestModelShop Makes perfect sense. Loved your approach to use your mini-milling machine/lathe to mate the tube to the solid mast. Since you were on a roll I was REALLY impressed when you ditched the ca glue and soldered the antenna arrays (now they're gorilla-proof). Will you be breaking out your Miller TIG welding rig next for, say, the deck railings? I can still remember the horror that you endured when you tried the Eduard 3 part railing system (stanchion, chain and turnbuckle) on the Arizona project. Although its only been a few short years its amazing just how far you and Nora have improved your modeling skills/techniques AND shared them with your humble flock.

    If you want the solder to flow better you need a low temperature solder, as well as a good flux. It's no good saying temperature to heat the brass to as the aftermarket aren't particularly choosy when picking the brass aside from the price.

    Hey Ben! Awesome job as always! Since the masts appear to be smooth tubing, top to bottom, what about rigging up an "angle iron" jig...a long 90-degree channel to set the mast pieces in. This set-up would be self-aligning and take much less time.
    Keep up the great work!

  • @154Colin
    @154Colin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It would be nice if the mast was one piece, but that would be almost imposible to undetake at that scale. If the sections fit together in such away as the maintian the smooth diameter reduction could you solder them together [1st and 2nd sections] and if need be place it on a thick piece of tempered glass heat it up gingerly and roll it straight; Sorry for then long sentence. Rinse and repeat for the upper too.

      I just make them. You can buy clear plexi glass at Home Depot or Menards if you’re in the states. Then get yourself a bottle of nail polish remover from the dollar store. (It’s acetone) But your clear parts together, make sure they stand in place nicely, and let some of that nail polish remover run down the seem. In 20 minutes the joint will be fused together.
