I do get what you are saying. Yet it is sort of a fallacy. With all due respect, building a model is very different from designing the real thing. It's a huge, long process. Sadly, the scope is huge, and coordination can be difficult with consultants and all the constant changes. I work for an architect, and you do put detail into what you build. There were hundreds of people involved making the drawings- all of which pivoted on a deadline. There are drawings for everything. Architectural, site, structural and mechanical. Sometimes problems in some designs do come up but are resolved. A drawing set for an addition contains at least 100 sheets- maybe more. I'm sure that the drawings of the original were like that. Plans, elevations, sections and details. There were also drawings that coordinated finishes in the suites. Given that some drawings were 30 feet long and hand drawn, I'm sure it was a challenge to coordinate. Imagine how much those drawing rolls weighed. You do have two schools at work here. You have the engineering built to tight tolerances in thousandths of an inch and the interior finish elements that are allowing as much as 1/4" in some cases for tolerance. Not to slam them too hard, but they were doing a tough job and making the largest ships at the time.
"What does that sign say?" "I don't know. We're too far away to read it." "Let's move closer. What does it say now?" "It says, "Don't get too close or the propellers will chop you up."" Chopping and crunching sounds.
You are obviously skilled. You have obviously done your research. I'd say your opinion counts. Besides, your client like it that way. I think this has been an amazing project and is pushing me to my first ship kit in about 50 years, one with a few pe parts.
I wanted to comment here in current time about something in episode 16. There was much talk about what a shame it is you won't be able to fully appreciate the interior etched pieces and how cool the rooms will look.... The very first thing that popped in mind was to build an long acrylic display case for the wood base to set on, which can display miniature room dioramas. It would be an awesome addition, and would be a great way to get the full appreciation how great the details are :) In addition, since there will be a long space to fill, other items such as props, like documents, a dinner plate, boarding tickets etc etc could be displayed there as well :)
Amazing work Ben. No one should pick apart your opinion, even if you or your client think they should be say purple, then it is what it is. It's when people say it's definitely this colour then they leave themselves open to the incoming barrage.
Looking fantastic as always! Don't forget that back in 1912 black and white film was orthochromatic. That means it was not sensitive to red and orange. Red would appear as black.

Looks fab. Still along way to go for me. The only difference from mine to this one is I'm lighting mine up and fitting woodies rooms. It looks great lit up with the rooms but it's very time consuming and extremely hard work. Especially trying to hide wires inside the plastic decks.
@TheMidwestModelShop can't wait to see it. The biggest pain with the interior Walls is trying to fix the light bleed. I'm nearly at the point of fixing down B deck down but my only concern is what glue to use. I don't want to fix it down with ca as I don't want my windows fogging up and epoxy is so messy to work with but is looking like the only real choice atm unless you could recromend somthing 😀
At the 10:03 point, it looks like the bridge is just a foot or so (in scale) above the benches. Is it a trick of the camera's perspective or were passengers supposed to keep their heads bent when walking below the bridge? EDIT: Never mind, I just checked the movie and it was a pretty low clearance (9 feet maybe)
Do you guys ever look through the demos of Titanic Honor and Glory for information and details? I think it would be a very rich source of reference material.

Ben, when you installed your flag decals on the masts, did you stick them on aluminum foil? I can't find a lot of info about this and don't want to mess it up.
I'll experiment with the non wavy flags. It's just such an awkward position at the top of the masts and I'm hoping the foil will allow me to do the precision work in a comfortable position. Thanks! And as always, I get a lot out of your videos.
Ben, the foil works great! Before I applied the decal to the foil, I taped the over sized foil to my mat and applied a thin layer of glue stick. I slid on the decal and let it dry overnight, trimmed it with nice scissors then wrapped it around a tooth pick and glued it shut with CA. The best part is that the foil allows you to make ripples in the side to side direction simulating air flow. I slid it off the tooth pick and glued to the mast.
Great build, I love the details. What is the pencil are you using to pick up small parts? You used it to place the small red sign to the railing. I am new to model building and have issues using tweezers to place really small parts and the pencil you use looks like a perfect fit. I looked up wax pencil because that is what it looks like but that search pulled up a bunch of art pencils used for coloring.

That’s what I’m doing with my build too. I have some ideas about hiding the wires. We’ll begin tackling that project after this one is out the door.

Maybe try E6000 somewhere. I don’t think it will fog.

What glue do you use to glue PE parts and plastic parts to the wood deck.

You know I didn’t. That probably would have been a good idea. I just wrapped them around the post and stuck it to itself.
If you have extra flags, I would experiment first with the foil. I know sticking it to itself work, but I don’t know about the foil.

It’s a wax pencil. You can get them on Amazon for doing lady’s finger nails.
