Never apologise for rewinding to listen to something again, especially when it’s Mitch lol trust me we don’t mind. My favourite thing about PTX is that there’s no ego in the group whatsoever, they’re all completely focused on what/who is going to make the arrangement sound best & that’s what they go with and they always make sure that whoever is leading shines while they’re being supported. One of my favourite stories is when Kirstie told an interviewer that when she found out they would be on The Sing Off she cried, not because she would be going on the show but because people would finally get to see Mitch’s (guy in the awesome hat) talent, they’re 100% there for each other & it’s beautiful 🥰

Guy in hat is Mitch Grassi. He has a ridiculous range and amazing tone to his voice. Be aware that he is a chameleon and LOVES to change his look. People after think it’s a new member, but it’s just Mitch changing things up. Kirstie likes to change her look too. The ONLY member change was the bass. Avi (beard/long hair) left in 2017, and Matt took his place.

My favorite part about this song is how they seem to take turns doing solos but they are NEVER solo. Its just a different voice moving up to the forefront while still blending with the group in a perfect harmony. The final set of hallelujah really showcases it. Its a chorus but they are constantly altering whose voice is prominent like its a round or something. It never stops flowing from one voice to the other like a boiling pot with specific ingredients rising to the top only to sink back into the rest of the broth as the next bit floats up.

One of the amazing things about Pentatonix is that every one of them is a first class musician alone, as well as being able to blend and work together with all of the others beautifully. Kevin, the beatboxer, has done some very impressive videos solo in the last couple of years, and Avi, the bass, has left the group and done some beyond beautiful work of his own since 2018. Their new bass, Matt, is equally a spectacular musician on his own, and blends seamlessly with the others in the work they have done since he joined. They are all, together and individually, a gift to the world of music.

I have basically spent all of 2020 watching Mitch break people with his high notes (and a few minds snap on how low Avi can drop)
If you listen when all of them sing together, you can pick out each voice if you try because all of them have such powerful vocals. Go back to the sing off days and watch the ensemble performances. There can be 30+ people on the stage singing the same part but you can always hear the pentatonix members. (It's also fun watching the others try to keep up with Scott's riffs)

🧡 Pentatonix. One could even imagine sting and synthesizer instrumentation incorporated in this rendition using just their vocalizations. One live version I've seen does use drums on stage for effect. Before Leonard Cohen passed he awarded this version of his classic as his favorite cover. Quite the honor. The thig that has always impressed me about PTX is their generosity and respectfulness of one another. There really is no "lead" singer; they arrange the music and allocate parts based on their vocal abilities. These five (now six with Matt taking over for Avi in 2017) do a brilliant job of crafting heir covers to bring something new to each piece without losing the soul of the song. We never see ego get in the way of the music, and in the videos from their tours and their behind the scene coverage they seem to be every nice and decent as you could hope for them to be. In performance you will often find them in line and see the person who has the solo move forward for their part and thn return, and so on (see their cover of "Sound of Silence". And as impossible as it might seem, they sound every bit as good in person.

    • @bill.godwin-austen
      @bill.godwin-austen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Absolutely spot on! All but Kevin (who came up as a beatboxer/instrumentalist) come from a choir background and truly buy into the concept that the background harmonies' job is to make the soloist sound great. There's no "diva attitude" ego getting in the way, and even those seen as a superstar within the group like Mitch accept the background role with gusto, knowing that when their turn comes to lead the others will do the same. That's what makes them so great. Five first rate, soloist/lead artist talents who are willing to fill the background roles and let each other shine.

That this was on a Christmas album throws some people off, since it doesn’t really scream “Holiday!” to you. Back story-their original recording of the song used lyrics from a Christian group that tell the Christmas story. But, when they were reviewing the tracks for the album for approval, they decided that it really didn’t work, so they wanted to replace it with a new recording of the original Cohen lyrics. Problem is that they were on tour in Asia at the time and only had one day free to record, and had to work with the studio’s sound people. Lucky for them that they were in Taipei, Taiwan, and that their beat boxer Kevin speaks fluent Mandarin! He has said it was the most satisfying professional day of his life, being able to combine his language skills with his music.

You've hit on so many accurate points regarding this performance, its impressive. All those things you said about respect for each other, distinct voices yet when they come together magic happens. They support one another. Example: When Mitch(tenor with sweet hat) is serenading us with his solo you can distinctly hear Avi's bass which enhances Mitch's performance even more. The dance of the tenor and the bass is stunning. This dynamic happens in other performances as well but is especially noticeable in this one. When Avi sings his solo notice there is still a bass. Not quite as pronounced as Avi's bass but its there and its Scott Hoying (tall blond baritone) covering for him. Each of these members is ultra talented and a stand out. However, their goal is not to focus on themselves being the center but to honor the spirit of the song. Avi's voice for me has not only warmth but emotion and together they all touch our souls with their angelic voices and musical composition. This is not just a performance its much more than that. Its an experience that transcends. Their voices lift and transport you. I feel forever changed and hopeful after listening to this. If you can watch the live performance of this as well. (Christmas Special 2016) It will not disappoint. Please react to Danc eof the Sugar Plum Fairy(their second Grammy) and an original written by Avi and Kevin Olusola (beat boxer extraordinaire) called Love Again.

People come to these reactions to see the Mitch Face, after someone gets Mitch Slapped for the first time. He can hit notes that change the migration paths of bats 😆
Avi is the second singer and the base in the group and he was classicly trained as a Basso Profundo, which is why he can hit the sub basement notes usually reserved for cellos and grand pianos. For a completely different musical style but even more impressive display of their range, you might check out the Grammy winning Daft Punk medley.

Bingo. Yes, most think there's an outside "effect" on Kevin's work (the beat-boxer) . There is not. Several places here you will find other reactors the played both this cover back to back to one of their live performances. They all came away with the same conclusion....the microphone is better in the cover but there is no outside "effects" or "treatments" to either voices or sound effects other than adding obvious up-front drums to a few of the songs when they were on extended tours.

This was recorded in the studio, so it does indeed use reverb and other general effects. They don't use a lot of pitch correction (autotune) but they do minor timing fixes, reverb, and EQ in the studio. Some of their recording are "live" (including a live version of Hallelujah) which put to rest if they are "real" or not. They are the real thing. Live Hallelujah: th-cam.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/w-d-xo.html

  • @elcarto22
    @elcarto22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Keep in mind that to produce a video like this, they are literally lip-syncing themselves, as there are no mics involved. But they are all just so good, and so precise, that you can NEVER tell the difference. Meaning that they were singing along with their studio recorded version while doing the video, but just not recording it. And, as others have suggested, if you catch the live version of this from their Christmas show, you'll see that it makes no difference anyway. ;-)
I'd point out that while Avi (Jesus) is their usual bass, Scott (tall blond) is a baritone with a four octave range, who just slides into the bass when Avi takes the lead. Similarly, on many songs, both Kirstin and Mitch have such an incredible upper range that they often start a note or phrase with one singing and the other finishing, and you have to listen really hard to notice it. It's not just that they're all AAA level singers singly, but that they work that well together. If this is your first P{TX video, you have a rabbit hole to fall down the size of the Grand Canyon.

They do use reverb on their parts, especially Kevin's "drums", of course so do live performers. On their recordings, I understand they will double or triple record the backup parts to thicken it a little. Not much beyond that. They need to be able to produce a good live version of everything they record, since (before Covid) they like to tour a lot. Which is why Avi left the group around 2017 to take better care of his family. Touring can be hard who really like being with their family.

I often think of this song and Sound of Silence in the same thought. They showcase each member (four amazing singers & Kevins ridiculous skills) and their unique arraignment of a classic song that many people have covered. Both also highlight the groups bass (Avi and Matt) so nicely. And please don’t apologize for playing Mitch twice! He’s a gem!!!

The fact that the voice is so versatile does not negate the fact that it IS an instrument. I believe it is considered the FIRST instrument, as well. So, the fact that you are an instrument guy makes you perfectly capable of assessing their skills and abilities - you are just assess from a different point of view than a vocal coach or professional singer.

LOL. Please don't apologize for any lack of "expertise" as a vocal coach. Your commentary and analysis is quite interesting. You mentioned more than once about their ability to work together, to "stay in their lane" and yet enhance each others' performance is unique. Not the first time we've heard that. As another reactor put it, "they get out of each other's way" and yet you can clearly hear each member as they don't fade enough to be unnoticeable. They each hold their own place but the arrangement is so cohesive. Definitely a favorite version for so many of us!
However, you also made a comment that I'd not heard before and it created a wonderful word picture for me when you said "it's like breaths coming at you." Your reference was in the first two verses, specifically in Avi's verse, and I could picture the sound like small waves ebbing and flowing over the toes of the listener standing on a seashore. That's EXACTLY what it sounded like. Thank you for this unique description that added to my listening experience.
Special? Yes. Unique? Definitely. And so are you.

Avi is a basso profundo with a contra bass range ( he can sing a bass clef 4th ledger-line F# with power!) Mitch is an authentic Countertenor (often called a male soprano; not true a literal analogy, but his timbre will make you think that). Kirstie is a strong mezzo who can belt like the boys! Scott is bass-baritone with a huge range with a lot of soul! Avi’s last note is a 2nd ledger-space bass clef Bb!
Kevin is a genius! He has perfect pitch, he’s a monster beatboxer, but also plays cello and sings tenor! When The Trio comes together with Kev and Avi or Matt, they hit us with the wall of sound!

hahaha i love channels who have just found out about pentatonix because now i get to do my schpiel
PTX members (from left to right)
Kevin Olusola: only black member in this video, beatboxer, tenor, amazing voice and range
Mitch Grassi: guy with the big hat, tenor, can hit every note on the freaking piano, he has changed his appearance a lot since the group formed, but it is always mitch. his hair has been black or brown or both (i really don't know, they look the same to me,) purple, blonde, bald, VERY long mullet, and now he has a short mullet.
Kirsten Maldonado: the only girl in the group, mezzo-soprano, has a beautiful voice and dyes her hair a lot. her hair has been black, brown, auburn, blonde, a kind of thunderstorm blue with gray tips, and now it's back to blonde again.
Scott Hoying: tall blonde dude, baritone, whenever avi (or matt) takes a solo scott does the bass line
Avi Kaplan: guy with the beard and beanie, bass, also has a higher key than just bass, left the group in 2017 and started his own stuff, check him out
Matt Sallee: not in this video, bass, is an amazing soulful singer, replaced avi but is a great addition to the group
Note: if you ever want to see kevin sing, check out imagine by pentatonix (but he sings in a lot of other songs)
    suggestions:
    sound of silence ptx
    come along ptx
    bohemian rhapsody ptx

I know I'm late commenting on this, and I have not read all of the comments so I dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but I believe the leather gloves that Kevin is wearing while "drumming" in this are adding some of that "snap" that you're hearing. If you watch them perform this live, you'll notice that he doesn't wear the gloves then, and the "drumming" just doesn't have quite the same bite to it that it does here.

Congratulations Jim! You have now completed my three-video "Pentatonix 101" primer! I always suggest that newbies to Pentatonix start with Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Daft Punk, because you get a lot of variety and highlights of the various members. But you truly cannot go wrong with anything that they do. My two suggestions for where to go next are "O Come All Ye Faithful" (who cares if it's past Christmas), which has an awesome Lion King vibe, and "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" which features their lush, chilling harmonies, along with new bass Matt and an incredible location. Have fun!

Here is my breakdown- PTX=polish polish polish, always perfect; Home Free= country vibes and lots of fun, killer beats and bass and Voiceplay=fun, theatrical, also killer bass. I think all 3 are amazing for different reasons, while some pick a favorite, I love all 3.
