Always glad to see a new person reacting to Pentatonix, especially a voice teacher. Really enjoyed it. Avi (pronounced Aah-Vee) is the original bass in the group. He left in 2017 because he had an illness in the family and could not be away as much as their schedule demanded. He was replaced in early 2018 by Matt Sallee. The solos are all superb but the arrangement is astounding - perfect in every detail, from the “-ujahs” in the first couple of choruses to the sudden quiet as Mitch begins his solo to the quiet octave unison just after. Interestingly, as the final crescendo begins it seems like Scott takes over but it is Kirstie that effects the climax just before the transition to the final humming. Brilliantly done.
Hey, Lauren thanks so much for offering your take on this piece. It was the video that got me hooked immediately on PTX but it wasn't until I heard comments from voice professionals such as yourself that I truly grasped the brilliance of not only their performance and their voices but of the incredible arrangement of this particular piece. I listen to it regularly and every hearing now uncovers something new - their switching between unison to harmony and back, the crescendos and decrescendos, the skillful way they weave their voices into the song to make it a memorable experience. More amazing is that, unlike a lot of artists who hire professional arrangers, they do most of their arrangements organically, sitting together and swapping ideas - no ego, no drama, all in service of the song. Add to that the brilliant cinematography of this performance and this herd of unicorns is pretty hard to top.
I love your reactions to them. They have a cover of The Sound of Silence from last year that you should definitely check out. It's amazing and really shows off some parts of their vocal ranges you might not have heard before.

The best part about really good singers to me, is that they don't "Need" to do a lot of theatrical stuff to convey a songs message. Their voices hold their own and they can convey a story that the listener can relate to. I have one for you. I just went backwards in time and listen to your reaction to their official video where Are You Christmas? And you made a comment about that you could tell that Mitch didn't have any auto-tune over his voice? I don't know how to tell that in a recorded song and it really got me curious. I would really love it if you could react to a song that is live by Pentatonix that everybody sounds good in of course but The Soloist is Mitch Grassi. I would really love for you to hear him belt in his upper range and hear the control he has he goes through his range live. And I also want you to hear how fabulous the entire group sounds live! It always amazes me that there are only 5 voices and they sound so full and big! I also wanted you to hear how everybody can do all of the little weird sounds that have to be done in this group. Everybody's part is so important! In the beginning of the video Kevin is putting away his cello from the previous number so only four people will be on stage. He joins the rest of the group off screen when Avi begins his solo before everything launches into space. The song is called "Aha"! live Singapore star Vista" an Imogen Heap cover th-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/w-d-xo.html
Enjoyed this so much and your comments! New Pentaholic sub here. You will always get genius with PTX, they do so many different kinds of music and always done well with interesting things to talk about. Can't wait to see you discover more. Gorgeous song!
Avi is a true basso profundo! Listen to “Can’t Help Falling In Love” the Elvis song. They do the song in a slow four rather than 6/8! This lends poignancy that 6/8 doesn’t. The ending chord is an AMaj 9! Avi sings a 3rd ledger-line bass clef A! The overtones ring like an organ!
Nikhil Varghese He IS a basso profundo despite your view! He himself has stated this-as well as voice professors throughout the music scene. By the way, he was an opera major at USC in SoCal! before he joined Pentatonix!
@@rmac1042 He is classified as a bass baritone which is quite different from basso profondo which means deep bass. If he's a basso profondo he's a poor one considering both Tim and Geoff go way lower than him regardless of what 'voice professors and ppl in music scene' say.
They are too gifted! For a real roller coaster of Pentatonix magic, be sure to check out their covers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Funk (which they won a Grammy for), and Imagine. Imagine is especially moving as a result of the message they share.
Please react to Avi Kaplan "Change On The Rise" to see what he is really capable of. It is so worth it. He was the song writer behind many of PTX's originals and honestly since he left I haven't found their arrangements as mind-blowing as they were before he left, which has led me to believe he had a major hand in arranging a lot of their covers as well.
Just finished watching this video. Avi who left was the bass. If you’d like to hear his range - react to the video with Peter Hollens with Avi Kaplan in Black Is The Color Of My True Loves Hair.
You also can see some of his range with the song “Ring of Fire” Cover by Home Free featuring Avi Kaplan although you do see the range of Home Free’s bass Tim Foust.
If you want the hair on your arm to stand up, watch their version of John Lennon's "Imagine." The choral climax at the end is incredible. It's just a massive vortex of sound, your heart will rise in your chest, you'd swear there was at least a dozen people singing, not just five.
Many people are unaware that Leonard Cohen never intended this to be a religious song, but instead a song about love loss, heartache and the isolation that it brings, using Biblical references to tell the story. He actually wrote over 80 verses to this song over the years, continuing to add new verses almost right up to his death. He always encouraged covering artists to use whichever verses they thought were appropriate for their particular version. Pentatonix recorded this song for one of their Christmas albums, and had originally intended on using some of the more Christmas-themed lyrics. They then decided to record this version, using Cohen's original lyrics. I've heard that Cohen heard this recording shortly before his death and called it his favorite version. I've never actually heard confirmation of that however. This song was my first exposure to Pentatonix, and I was instantly hooked. I've been a dedicated Pentaholic ever since. There literally hasn't been a day go by since then that I haven't listened to and/or watched the video of a song of theirs!
Kevin is also a cellist and a good place to hear that is in their cover of Say Something. They did a Brady Bunch style cover of Winter Wonderland/ Don't Worry with Tori Kelly, and a micro-theatrical version of the Wizard of Oz with Toderick Hall called The Wizard of Ahhs. These don't seem to get suggested as often but are still gems. Then of course Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, and their originals like Run To You and That's Christmas To Me are excellent as well. Even their competition performances on The Sing Off are very entertaining. Pick anything by Pentatonix (no "The" in front of the name, by the way) and you can't go wrong.
You need to listen to PTX’s version of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”! They do the song in a slow 4 rather than 6/8 which adds poignancy to the song! Also, at the end they sing an A9 and Avi sings a 3rd ledger-line bass clef A! The overtones ring making the chord sound like an organ!
HI Lauren, I think I am attached to you at the hip. lol The first time I saw this clip I basically said exactly the same thing. The ending . whoa . They are just masters at arranging . I think is is Scott who does most of it. It is sort of prodigy level to me. He is just genus. I have listened to them for several years now and they just seem always to be as good or better than their last song. They are sort of the Dimash of A Capella groups . You finish listening and you say to yourself " Did I just hear that ?". In a shoulda-coulda imaginary scenario I bet it would be fun for you to do a number with Pentatonix. I will guess that you would enjoy it . It sort of deals with different aspects for your training in that you are matching syllables and voice level and phrase ending to synch with the other singes. I am sure you would do well and I bet you would have fun. Kristin of Pentatonix did a number with a Florida A capella group can Voctave and I am certain you will like it. I will leave a link if interested. Thanks for doing the review. Enjoyed it. Great job ! th-cam.com/video/zLMeDUBKmBs/w-d-xo.html
Avi left in 2017, there is a video that you can look up and watch it is emotional. Avi left because Pentatonix was touring so much, he was getting homesick, his mother was getting sick, he wasn't seeing his family enough and wanted to be able to do that. I would also recommend checking out his solo work, amazing!!
There were a lot of factors involved in Avi leaving. He had a severe illness in the family, I believe a grandmother with cancer, and he wanted to spend as much time as possible with her. And there was also the fact that he needs time alone in nature to refresh and recharge. Both of those were just not possible with the touring schedule PTX keeps up. They parted as friends and, I believe, Avi helped them find his replacement. But yes. He has one of the greatest bass voices I've ever heard. Not only can he go deep or comparatively high with it, but he is melodic and can actually sing with it, which is something rare from what I've heard with deep bass singers.
Enjoyed your reaction to this incredible video. It has everything, except Kevin (beatboxer) singing a solo, which he does in a few of their videos. Please put Evolution of Music, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Grammy winner) and Imagine (Kevin has a solo part in this one) on your list. For a more recent video with their new bass Matt Sallee, please check out Havana. BTW, Avi Kaplan (Ahh-vee) studied opera performance in college, and is a basso profundo, the lowest vocal range. After leaving PTX, he has done some solo work. You can hear his beautiful voice and range in his videos Black Is The Color and Hey Ya.
@Lisa Holmes Change on the Rise is great,, but I prefer Black is the Color and Quarter Past Four and Hey Ya. Just a matter of tone - I like his folkier songs. But we both love his voice, and that's what matters most.
Avi has a; solo channel and is currently touring and is releasing an EP later this month. He has lots of recent solo work as well as some videos and music under a side group also found on his page, Avriel and the Sequoias. His voice is phenomenal. I'd highly suggest checking him out! The beatboxer in this group also has a solo channel with fantastic covers and music. His channel is under Kevin Olusola :-)
@@SingingwithLauren Im excites ab ou ut it. I saw hom in Boston last Aug and have tickets tk see hi. In Apri l.j again. Not only a gorgeous voice but also sermed genuinely humbled that people took the time to come out to see him.
There are 3 Acapella groups I really enjoy & try to keep up on: Pentatonix, Home Free, & Voiceplay. Voiceplay not quite as well known as the other 2, but if you want to hear some jaw dropping Bass check out cover of 'Daddy sang Bass' or 'the Oogie Boogie Song.'
And if you think Avi’s three octaves you mentioned in this were impressive, wait until you hear Geoff hit five octaves within ten seconds at the end of “Oogie Boogie’s Song”!
You will become a Pentaholic after listening to a few more! To use words from "Waitress", they are a perfect pie. I just subscribed and look forward to watching more of your reactions. I'm a musicholic❤
Thanks for reacting to this, Lauren; I love your presence & personality. May I offer you just a couple video recording tips? It seems that you may be looking at the screen of your recording device, when you are commenting; to me, the viewer, it looks like you are looking to my right, as though there were someone sitting next to me. I think you would be better served to just look right at the camera lens; then people will feel that you are talking to them, and not an imaginary person sitting next to them. Next, the video you played is louder than the ambient recording of your voice; so, I had to keep turning my volume up and down to compensate. Thanks for doing your thing, I'm really enjoying it all.
If you want to hear them sing live, watch the silent night video. They sing in a church that gives a beautiful resonance to their vocals. One of the most beautiful renditions of that song you'll here.
Another great a capella group that you may be interested in is Home Free. They're every bit as great as Pentatonix so I bet that you would really enjoy them.
Now go back to their beginnings. Look up "Sing Off" season 3, and you will learn how they got started, just a week before the show. You will enjoy their journey. We Pentaholics really enjoy watching it again with new pentaholilcs.
It would be wonderful if you could react to some of Avi/Ahvee's music. Some of his music is listen under his name, Avi Kaplan and some is Listed as Avriel and the Sequoias. He has released some really good singles, most of them are written by him. Change on the Rise, Aberdeen, Sweet Adaline, Hey Ya (cover) Fields and Pier, Otherside, Quarter Past Four and his newest being audio, I Knows Me, and man more. He just completed his European tour this week. As I am sure you have already learned, he lift Pentatonix because the schedule was too much for him. He mother has had cancer and he is so close to his family. His perfect place to be is in the mountains with water, trees and all this has to offer. He lived in Los Angeles for the 6 years he was with Pentatonix and hated the city. All of his music is worth reacting to.
I’m a new subscriber so speaking of late lol... PTX is absolutely amazing I’m a huge fan. Another group you should check out if you haven’t already is Home Free. It’s an all male a cappella group that also will blow you away. For a first from them I recommend their version of “Ring of Fire” featuring Avi Kaplan (bass singer from Pentatonix). The bass of Home Free is Tim Foust, a dynamic voice with freakish range and quality. Check them out. Love your reaction here by the way.
Love your reactions Lauren!! 👏👏 Would love for you to react to Gold (Kiiara cover)...one of my favorites of theirs.....I am convinced that you will enjoy the amazing arrangements and vocal performances in this one...they are truly amazing!! 😉👍
You should also check out Home Free acapella vocal group, they won The Sing-Off the season after Pentatonix did and they have amazing harmonies. John Denver "Country Roads" cover.Boyz ll Men "End Of The Road" cover, "Man Of Constant Sorrow" cover, or an Original of theirs "Dreamer".
Good reaction. I would love to see you react to Angelica Hale if you haven't already. She was the 2017 runner up on America's Got Talent. She was 9-10 years old at the time she did that show and she was amazing. I would request you react to all of her performances in order if you are willing. It goes, Rise Up, Girl on Fire, Clarity, Without You and finally Symphony. They are really good performances. If you want to do newer videos from Jan. of 2019 I would recommend her AGT Champions performances of Fight Song and then Impossible.
Better late than never! At least you didn't miss the Dimash train. Do yourself a favour and react to Superfruit (Mitch and Scott), Empire Medley. Soooo good!
Hi, Lauren, hope you're doing well. Just listening again to your reaction to this song by PTX (I circle back to your video for this one and "Where Are You Christmas" every few weeks) because I love your reaction and enthusiasm. I noticed that you haven't done any more of them lately and wanted to suggest a cover by them that seems more apropos than ever given the current state of the world. Please react to their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" when you get a chance - every member (including Avi) gets a chance to solo and the result is an interpretation that is stunning in it's simplicity and moving beyond words. Otherwise, I hope you and yours remain safe and healthy and continue to keep your positive attitude throughout this craziness. All the best!
If you are looking for other works that showcase their ensemble talents and vocal range, I recommend Carol of the Bells and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
I actually prefer this version over Cohen's. As a metal head myself, I love different voices, acappella. I started with, the nylons. Give them a listen. You have a new fan though! Thanks.
This is my 3rd fab of this song, after Jeff Buckley and KD Lang. They hit all the emotions the way I expect. Not soulless like so many other renditions.
please react to Elvis Presley singing "Way Down". Especially listen to the bass of J. D. Sumner. At the end, he reaches a low note that almost no one else can do. Really like Pentatonix and Home Free using only their voices and beatbox techniques to deliver some amazing performances.
Please react to Home Free Vocal Band, *however* please do not react to their cover of a song called 'Mayday' by CAM until after you've heard a few other songs from them. That song has a surprise that you won't see if its the first of their videos you watch. I recommend "Think A Little Less", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" or "Ring Of Fire feat. Avi Kaplan"
I'm with Smokey Tippins! Avi Kaplan's guest appearance with Home Free is the perfect opportunity to pivot into the second of three fantastic a cappella groups (PTX, Home Free, and VoicePlay). The Home Free version of "Ring of Fire" features something you NEVER see--two bass soloists! Tim Faust and Avi Kaplan are two of the best EVER! Please share with us your first reaction to Home Free (ft. Avi Kaplan) covering June Carter Cash's "Ring of Fire" (th-cam.com/video/0l3dsHCScxU/w-d-xo.html). NOTE: headphones are highly recommended whenever you listen to any of these three a cappella groups.
Please do "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman! The movie version, and the greenlight version. Oh, and you need to see the greenlight version of "From Now On". Went full on gospel in that version. I love it! One more, "Queen of Mean" from Descendants 3.

Thanks for the ideas and the well though out comment!! I so appreciate it!!
Enjoyed this so much and your comments! New Pentaholic sub here. You will always get genius with PTX, they do so many different kinds of music and always done well with interesting things to talk about. Can't wait to see you discover more. Gorgeous song!
Thanks for you comment!!! I can’t wait to hear more!!
He's not a basso profondo. He can't sing below A1 in chest.
Thanks for the comment!!! I can't wait to check this one!!
@@nikelodeon6852 his lowest chest is D1 i think, so saying he cant sing below A1 is a direct lie
They are too gifted! For a real roller coaster of Pentatonix magic, be sure to check out their covers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Funk (which they won a Grammy for), and Imagine. Imagine is especially moving as a result of the message they share.
I CAN LISTEN TO THIS MUSIC 24/7. I LOVE THE TRIBE, OPS, GROUP
That is seriously on the top of my list!! gonna film it tomorrow!
listens to THIS with one ear bud....made me tear up a little lol
Just finished watching this video. Avi who left was the bass. If you’d like to hear his range - react to the video with Peter Hollens with Avi Kaplan in Black Is The Color Of My True Loves Hair.
ooooo!!! can't wait to watch this one!!
More PTX and Avi Kaplan too!!
yes yes yes!
I totally agree about Avi...there's something about his voice, no matter what register, that is just so...Well, it totally resonates with me.
Hey Brad! Thanks for all the recs, I so appreciate it and love getting inspo from my viewers!
It is so nice to see someone new react and review this song. Good job with the analysis.
Hey there!! thank you so much for your thoughtful comment!!! i totally agree!! thanks for the recommendation and the link!!
Ben could actually be called the 6th member. He is involved in every arrangement, and is the studio producer.
Spend a whole day. On PENTATONIX. It`il be fun.
can't wait!!
Thank you, loved your reaction. 👍😊
I just watched it!! 😪 good for him though for doing what was right for him!
I wish he was still in the group but love his solo work he is doing he has an amazing voice
Thanks for letting me know that this song has an original with longer lyrics! lol Subscribed!
Thanks for all the recs!!
WOW!! excited to her that the EP is coming out soon!!
I def need to check these out!
Thanks Cheryl! and I LOVE waitress!! such an amazing show.
I so enjoyed your reaction, there is so much joy to be had in experiencing musical artistry of this level, no?
For some great live Pentatonix videos look up there Evolution series, Aha Singapore, and Silent Night
Thank you!!
Pentatonix & Home Free are my 2 favorite accapella groups! They have great voices and arrangements.
Thanks for the tips!! I do appreciate it!!
Great! You should definitely react to their daft punk medley! Thats probably one of the best (though every one is good)
Thank you!! I’ll def have to do that one!!
@@SingingwithLauren and Use bith sides of the headphones 😉 its a complete new experience
Miss Lauren you paused to early Mitch will give you chills with his tenor voice
If you want to hear them sing live, watch the silent night video. They sing in a church that gives a beautiful resonance to their vocals. One of the most beautiful renditions of that song you'll here.
Another great a capella group that you may be interested in is Home Free. They're every bit as great as Pentatonix so I bet that you would really enjoy them.
oooo!! a couple people mentioned them on here!! excited to check them out!
Now go back to their beginnings. Look up "Sing Off" season 3, and you will learn how they got started, just a week before the show. You will enjoy their journey. We Pentaholics really enjoy watching it again with new pentaholilcs.
Try out I am a man of constant sorrow by Home Free. Another acapella group.
It would be wonderful if you could react to some of Avi/Ahvee's music.
Some of his music is listen under his name, Avi Kaplan and some is
Listed as Avriel and the Sequoias.
Also PTX version of Kiara - Gold is INSANE!
Thanks for the rec!!
I'd also recommend Voice Play especially with Rachel Potter.
Lauren, I recommend that you use both ear buds when listening to Pentatonix because they use panning and you don't get the full affect using just one.
This chord gave me chills 8:44
Avi Kaplan's new path is enchanting! Feel free to look it up :) Thank you for that reaction. This is my favourite A Cappella cover!
Avi hasn't disappeared. You can hear him working with Home Free, another great acapella group. BTW, Matt has been a great addition to PTX.
Ah-vee (Avi)
And I know you felt those low notes, literally!!!
YES, 😱🌴🌟
Good reaction. I would love to see you react to Angelica Hale if you haven't already. She was the 2017 runner up on America's Got Talent. She was 9-10 years old at the time she did that show and she was amazing. I would request you react to all of her performances in order if you are willing. It goes, Rise Up, Girl on Fire, Clarity, Without You and finally Symphony. They are really good performances. If you want to do newer videos from Jan. of 2019 I would recommend her AGT Champions performances of Fight Song and then Impossible.
Thanks for all the recs!! can't wait to dive into these!
@@SingingwithLauren My pleasure.
Better late than never! At least you didn't miss the Dimash train. Do yourself a favour and react to Superfruit (Mitch and Scott), Empire Medley. Soooo good!
YES!!! will do!! thanks!!
The song " El perdon " by diana Navarro
If you are looking for other works that showcase their ensemble talents and vocal range, I recommend Carol of the Bells and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
please react to bohemian rhapsody and can you feel the love by pentatonix
Yes!! Those look like popular ones!
It’s not “The” Pentatonix. It’s just Pentatonix. Scott named the group when they were competing on “The Sing-Off” (which they won).
Gotcha!! thanks for the heads up!
For clarity, The Sing-Off season 3
I actually prefer this version over Cohen's. As a metal head myself, I love different voices, acappella. I started with, the nylons. Give them a listen. You have a new fan though! Thanks.
Hey Brandon, Thanks so much for the comment!! i'll check out the nylons!!
@@SingingwithLauren Oh my gosh. I'm blushing. My first heart on TH-cam, and I've been here for 11 years. Ty. I'm sad huh🤣
Another Acapella group you should react to is Voiceplay, their cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water is top notch
totally, they've been highly requested!!
like your comments would love to hear you react to a group that Scot from Pentatonix formed.... its a all girls group
love your reaction and your energy you have a new sub :)
Soooo Awesome 👌
Avi's range is amazing!
This is my 3rd fab of this song, after Jeff Buckley and KD Lang. They hit all the emotions the way I expect. Not soulless like so many other renditions.
You should react to pentatonix singing making Christmas.
Avi released two albums after leaving the group. I'll Get By in Feb. 2020 and Floating on a Dream in May 2022.
React to Mary Did You Know Pentatonix! Enjoyed your reaction!
React to them singing can you feel the love tonight pls its my favorite music from them 😊
Check out Avi's "Change On The Rise".. It's amazing.
please react to Elvis Presley singing "Way Down".
Avi Kaplan"
With Pentatonix, always wear both earbuds for maximum enjoyment of all the high & low tones.
great reaction, sounds like soon you can claim the title 'pentaholic'. Serious Pentatonix fans, your views should skyrocket :)
hah soon and very soon! thanks Tom!
React to 'Blinded by the lights" by Pentatonix. A great, catchy cover. Also Amazing Grace is..ahem..amazing.
You are so sweet & beautiful Lauren 😘💘🌷.
Thanks Jason!
The song " El perdón " by diana Navarro
I recommend Mary Did You Know by Pentatonix as well as Little Drummer Boy, the after that Home Free ing of Fire with Avi Kaplan. Total ear candy.
Please do "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman! The movie version, and the greenlight version. Oh, and you need to see the greenlight version of "From Now On". Went full on gospel in that version. I love it! One more, "Queen of Mean" from Descendants 3.
