In my opinion, her absolute best performance of Hallelujah is from the opening ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Being Canadian, I treasure that two of the most talented musicians are also Canadian - Leonard Cohen, who I got to see in concert when he was 76 was soooo amazing, and k.d. lang, who is off-the-charts amazing, has been an icon for so many years. @@pamstuckey8349 I had not heard of Samara Joy before reading this comment. I thought if someone was mentioning her in the same breath as k.d. lang, then I will check her out. OMG! I am so glad I stumbled across your comment. Thank you.
k d lang sang this at the Vancouver Olympics and there was a huge amount of joy! It made me so happy as a Canadian to show a beautiful song written by a Jewish man and performed by a lesbian woman in no shoes that made everyone tear up!
The Olympics performance just broke me. In the best way possible lol. Closest thing to having a 'spiritual moment' I've experienced in my life. Such a simple but powerful presence, has K.d.
Constant Craving is one of her more popular songs and I still love it. And yes, Crying is another chills-giver. Probably more than this one! What I love so much about KD Lang is her remaining so humble as well. You can see it on her face at the end of this performance. What a blessing she is.
I used to frequent a local dive in the mid 90's after work. Among the regulars was a drummer from a major 60's band (he will remain nameless here). The jukebox mostly sucked, but I found "Constant Craving" and played it. He looked at me and said thank-you, that is a great artist and a masterpiece of a song. High praise for this artist and song from a very talented musician.
I love that about her too. She's never been on an ego trip. In the beginning her name would be displayed, 'kd lang', all lowercase. If I remember correctly, she did that on purpose because she was just delivering the music. She wanted the music to be the focal point.
Yes! Constant Craving is beautiful! I think that was her first big hit. (??) But, I absolutely love her singing at the beginning and end of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. (Starshine?) She has such a pure voice. Almost magical. ❤ 🎶
The magic of KD Lang is the absolute purity of her voice. No autotune and no fancy runs. Simple, pure emotion and clear tone. It’s rare to find that anymore.
This was her Kennedy center honors performance. I've watched it so many times and I still get chills. K D Lang is one of the most underrated singers on earth. She doesnt just "sing" a song she PERFORMS the song. From beginning to end. A spinetingling performance!
He also told Jon Bon Jovi that his cover was the best. I don't know the timing. I love k.d. Lang, and I hated the way country music treated her when she came out as being gay. BUT, I like Jon's cover better, it's a live version before the surgery that messed up his throat. I got mad at him when I learned that he still smoked. All of us '80s kids get passes on some things. We didn't know what smoking did long-term to you back in the day. Our music and our movies are what the new generation is trying to "improve" on. You can't improve on perfection so they need to think up some of their new sh*t. But, he knows what addiction is and cigarettes are an addiction that will kill you. Ask Eddie Van Halen, may he rest in peace, it started with smoking. He should've stopped smoking once we knew it could kill you! He's got enough money for whatever treatment plan was required. But, it's sad to listen to him try to sing their anthem songs. He can't do it anymore. He needs to change the arrangements around to fit this new voice or write new songs. Something has to change. I know it's getting close to the holidays, and the New Year, so he should make a New Year's Resolution to stop smoking and keep it! Maybe the gift he was born with could be returned if the house was finally clean. But, the way he sings it live, gives me chills. You should go look it up.
I remember hearing about that too and thought it was great that it was another fellow Canadian that received his accolades... what a wonderful honour.....
A daughter of Canada. I first saw KD preform this at the Olympics in Vancouver Canada and the next time was at Musicfest in the Comox Valley BC. KD closed an evening of music with this song. As she sang the moon rose. Surreal, magical experience. She is well loved, a fabulous voice and a beautiful soul.
KD Lang had all of Canada in tears when she sang this in the opening ceremony for the 2010 Olympics. She sings it with such emotion, you can’t help but be moved by it
Not just Canada! In the U.S., I set my VCR to tape her, not even knowing what song she was going to sing, but knowing it would be outstanding. I believe she also sang Turn Me Round and did a little square dance. 😃
No one has ever done it better than KD. Her performance at the Vancouver Olympics was the single most powerful performance of any song by anyone I have ever experienced🇨🇦
This believe that when the singer is bare foot on stage heor she can feel the vibration of the band playing. It is very grounding and felt throughout the body. Connects the performer to the music even more. Such a spiritual experience. You can tell KD feels the emotion of the music. The band members feel this in the instruments, and they are all as one, singer and band, shared with the audience. Wow. Magical.
It is like standing in the grass barefoot on a beautiful day and feeling the rythmn of the earth in your feet. This changes with each season, and our bodies and mind respond. God gave us all such gifts- I am grateful for the experience.
KD Lang. The woman with the golden voice. I remember her running up to accept a Canadian Juno award when she burst onto the scene in a wedding dress and cowboy boots. She is a unique and amazing human being.
I can imagine, i can see everyone literally breathing together as the absorbed, listened, cried and glorified the gift they were saying goodbye to but knowing they could continue to hear this in their hearts forever!
Just rewatched 2010 Olympics version from the opening ceremonies..makes me cry everytime...and for a giggle, rewatched kd lang at 1988 Calgary Olympics closing ceremonies ...that was an amazing 2 week party, complete with Eddie the eagle and Jamaican bobsledders. "CONSTANT craving" by kd lang was given credit by Rolling Soles for their song "Anybody seen my baby". And "crying" sung by kd is showstopping
One of the best concerts I'd ever been to was KD Lang. No flash, no costume changes, no dancers. Just this effortless voice and her band. This song blows you away in person.
Yesssss. I was fortunate a few years ago to sit in front row at a small fund raiser gathering of hers and she sang this song (barefoot of course😏 Wasn’t a dry eye in the place. Your heart simply exploded 💓 She can channel many songs with her talent and soul, but boy o girl! This song, many have tried to cover, no one got it like KD. Even Leonard Cohen agreed.
Ditto!❤KD. Now when I hear her voice, it takes me back to my youth, and she is there to serenade me along the way. The "soundtrack to my life"sounds trite... it's so much more than that...she is part of my heart and soul.❤
I was at this Juno performance. When she started singing, people stopped talking. No one was whispering. Everyone was captivated. I don't think I have ever seen an audience so completely focused on a performer.
Celine Dion Barbara Streisand Whitney Houston....so many others and they don’t come close to KD she sings with every part of her being, she transports you and when she shares her gift with this piece of music you don’t realise you are crying until the tears fall off your chin. A huge talent, so huge she found her way out of small town rural Alberta and against all odds her voice brought her to world attention and for them that had not had the joy of listening to her the Olympic Games performance in Canada changed that forever. Canadian icon.
I wasn't expecting tears to accompany my morning coffee. Check out her performance of this song at the 2010 Olympics opening ceremony. Proud Canadian supporting a Canadian legend.
K.D is a true Canadian gem, she’s from my home province of Alberta and she has one of the best voices ever. Check out her duet with Roy Orbison “ Crying “
I met KD when she was still dancing in punk rock hair, western boots and an old school western ladies outfit like Loretta Lynn. She was performing at the Longhorn in Calgary. She outperformed so many acts you could go back everyday night and she was different. Followed her for a lifetime.
K.D is underrated, always has been. The way she immerses herself in music, plays into her performative arts background. She was way before her time, and her early country days were wild! She commands so much emotion, especially that first hallelujah.. at the start of each chorus,so heart wrenchingly beautiful. ❤️ Thank you for sharing!
KD Lang has been around for years and just keeps getting better. Fantastic voice and stage presents. Listen to her sing "Crying" it will blow your mind.
As a Canadian, thanks so much for covering a Canadian artist. One of the aspects I love so much about her rendition of Hallelujah is the tension she played with. It was like an elastic band, pushing and pulling and playing at all the right times. Peace.
KD lang s one of the worlds greats and she proves it here with the all time best performance of Leonard Cohens classic! But my motivation to comment is because of who YOU are, Polo…I’m new to your work but so deeply touched by your energy that I now watch every one you do even if I’m not interested in the song. Your gentleness and kindness and compassion shine through every episode! I always feel drawn to you and lean into the tv as I’m watching as thought that will bring me even closer to you. I’m grateful I found you and thank you for sharing your huge soul with all of us! BTW I’m an 85 year strong white woman (going on 39) and agree with an earlier commenter who talked about transcending race, age, gender…I feel that totally! Thank you again…💝
Love KD Lang - she's astonishing. Leonard Cohen was asked to perform this song at the 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony - he told them to have KD Lang do it - as she does it best.
K.D. is amazing. You need to go and read about her career. She was outcasted when she came out and it really hurt her career but she stood strong and kept going. She has an amazing voice and no one can hold a candle to her.
Yeah, Check out her cover shot on Vanity Fair magazine w/ Cindy Crawford. (Aug. 1993) She has said she got tired/exhausted of being the figurehead for lesbian. Check out her version of Crying.. later years she did a duet with Roy Orbison of it. Her own songs are gorgeous as well. Her album ‘Ingenue’ is gorgeous. Constant Craving song is a must.
She was extra cast out when she came out against meat. The province she’s from has a huge beef industry, and she was vocal in being vegetarian (this was in the late 80s I think, and that term covered pretty much all vegan/vegetarianism) and anti-meat production. You would have thought she was the Antichrist. She was just unapologetically herself, and I think she’s amazing.
Leonard Cohen declared after he heard KD do this song that he didn't know it when he wrote it decades ago but that nobody, not even himself, could sings this like KD. Her performing this song in front of Leonard Cohen is so moving. Just seeing the master take her hands at the end and give a little bow over them makes me cry every time.
Leonard Cohen was one amazing poet and songwriter, but his voice was (in my opinion, only) not able to recognise the fullest extent of beauty in his songs. He could convey emotion well enough, but it's like comparing a pop singer's rendition of Nessum Dorma to Pavarotti's.
@@deathandcats I don't deny that but even angels can't make a really badly written song move the soul. I don't think Mr Cohen ever described himself as a singer; a poet yes, many times. And that's what he was. Canada's poet; he will be forever missed.
Thanks for listening to KD Lange!!! She always gives me goosebumps when I hear her sing. I believe she's one of the best singers ever. She has such power and beauty in her voice..
I agree. I think she is one of the best singers. She is fantastic! I became a fan of hers the first minute of hearing her sing years ago. I hope to meet her some day to thank her for sharing her passion of singing with all of us.
Little footnote. She doesn't use capital letters in her name - I read it in a biography but can't remember why. Hers is still the best concert I've seen in 30 years.

Loved kd since her country days waaaaay back. She makes me proud to Canadian and her version of Hallelujah is my very very favourite. She also sang with Tony Bennett and it was so gorgeous. Thank you for featuring her 🇨🇦
This is the most personalized rendition of this song. Vocalized by someone who has loved and sacrificed and lost. A mature understanding of the glory, and joy, and heartbreak, that is loving someone else.
What a perfect reaction. I’ve listened to her sing this countless times and ALWAYS covered with goosebumps. She is truly incomparable. Her voice is truly a gift from God.
A song by a Canadian legend sung by a Canadian legend. I second the recommendation for Crying. She is from the same province I am. I remember her coming out at a time when that was not easy. She has always been uniquely herself and I greatly admire her.
Leonard Cohen and his girlfriend/backup singer were at that concert. In an extended version of this video, K.D. Lang acknowledged him, and he was proud of her.

Her voice is amazing, and I love her phrasing. She owned that audience, and the homage they paid her at the end was moving. Did you see her face as she accepted the ovation they were giving her? She seems so humble. I love that she performs in her bare feet! Great request, and your reaction, while reserved, conveyed how much you enjoyed the song. Dig into her library. I have been listening to her for decades, and she has some remarkable tracks for you to check out. Peace
As of June 8th 2023 Yesterday by the Beatles is the most covered song ever with 1600 recorded versions. Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah comes in at # 9 on the list.
She absolutely deserves respect for her music and I'm so happy to see folks responding with praise. I wish TH-cam had been around 30 years ago because radio treated her like shit and refused to play her music. They did their best to bury her and not let her have any airtime. It hurt her deeply. Thanks for posting this.
Like many Canadian artists, they would only get recognition once they'd make it big in USA. For a small country (population-wise, we do produce some pretty remarkable artist).
She was completely black balled by the Industry for not playing along, and therefore was given little to NO exposure. They could not stop her though, nor her fans. Despite her rather underground career, legends lined up to perform with her. You can't stop something this Powerful and God given, the purity of her voice is unstoppable.
A girl from the Prairies, Canada. She busted onto the scene at the Grammys' running onstage in a full wedding dress and tennis shoes. Everyone said whotf is she?? Now they know. Listen to her song Constant Craving. You won't be sorry. 😁
Yeah, she was WAY ahead of it all--and that was the challenge. The record companies initially knew she was busting with talent but how to market it?! It didn't stop her. Whether it's to 1,000s of people or on top of a soap box on a street corner, only she she knows is that breathing & singing are one in the same for her 🙂 The world is blessed for it. Thx K.D.
To have that kind of God-given gift to sing like that (and a ton of practice no one else sees), is truly remarkable! I first saw her perform in the mid-1980s and she was, and still is, amazing!
I'm nearly deaf. When I was a young woman I was able to hear k d Lang and collected her albums. How I wish I could hear her again, but I'm so grateful that I was able to hear her when I did. She sings like an angel.

She has been so overlooked! Had very little air play in the US. Maybe too good for the competition?
No gimmicks, no strobing lights, no backup singers. This is REAL talent.
As Stephen Sondheim called this type of vocalist: a singer with a capital S!
All people are born with certain gifts. KD’s gift was her soulful voice. Glad you found her.
K.D. Lang is our Canadian Iconic Treasure. Nobody sings this song like she does. The absolute best version.
She is a Legend and us Canadians love her to bits. 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Leonard Cohen was still the best!
@@janetf9076 I like KD's version better. Leonard also Canadian.

Thank you for sharing her with the rest of the world! I’m in the US and LOVE K.D.!
Leonard cohen once said hers was the best
The woman has one of the best voices anywhere, ever. Gives me chills, no matter what she sings.
She has a perfect voice IMO. For me only Samara Joy has a more perfect voice
@@pamstuckey8349 I had not heard of Samara Joy before reading this comment. I thought if someone was mentioning her in the same breath as k.d. lang, then I will check her out. OMG! I am so glad I stumbled across your comment. Thank you.

Check out her album,"DRAG"
The first time I saw her on TV I was in love. Couldn't believe her voice. Tony Bennit said she had the voice of an angel. He should know.
k d lang sang this at the Vancouver Olympics and there was a huge amount of joy! It made me so happy as a Canadian to show a beautiful song written by a Jewish man and performed by a lesbian woman in no shoes that made everyone tear up!
You can add Buddhist to the list ...that's why the bare feet😊
According to his son, they asked Leonard Cohen to sing at the Olympics. He said no, that kd lang sang the ultimate rendition.
That Canadian Jewish man, Leonard Cohen, was a great poet and his music is so special-Suzanne, Dance me to the End of Life, Anthem etc
The Olympics performance just broke me. In the best way possible lol. Closest thing to having a 'spiritual moment' I've experienced in my life. Such a simple but powerful presence, has K.d.
@@carolynquinn8325her Olympic performance was one of the most breath taking performances that I have ever heard. Incredible!!!!!
K.D. Lang sings from her soul regardless what she sings and she makes it her own❣
Constant Craving is one of her more popular songs and I still love it. And yes, Crying is another chills-giver. Probably more than this one! What I love so much about KD Lang is her remaining so humble as well. You can see it on her face at the end of this performance. What a blessing she is.
Definitely ❣️❣️
I was just thinking the same. Constant Craving is soooooo on point. She articulated what im sure many couldnt.
KD Lang has been a completely underrated singer.
Only to people who never heard her sing.
You took the words right out of my keyboard, @@sitori663
She is one of my favourite singers, had the privilege of seeing her live in concert twice ❤
Perhaps to mainstream radio pop/rock/hip -hop but she is very well appreciated in country, folk-rock and folk-country listeners.
Not to us Canadians!! She is one of our greatest treasures!
This was her Kennedy center honors performance. I've watched it so many times and I still get chills. K D Lang is one of the most underrated singers on earth. She doesnt just "sing" a song she PERFORMS the song. From beginning to end. A spinetingling performance!
The testament to how good KD’s version is the fact that Leonard Cohen said it was the best he heard. Thanks so much for this reaction. 👏👏🥰
I do believe he was at one of her performances of this and loved it.
I believe his words were, "Well, it's her song now."
You should go look it up.
he also said that Pentatonix had the best version
@@Gwennedd when he was present at one of her performances singing Hallelujah he cried - I don't recall him ever crying EVER before that
Leonard actually commented that this was HER song... that's how fully she owns this. Kudos to you for appreciating her.
I heard that said too! This song is hers❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌺🌸🌺❤️❤️❤️❤️
Cohen was asked roaming this at the Vancouver Olympics and he responded “why would you want me to sing it when you can have k.d.lang”
I remember hearing about that too and thought it was great that it was another fellow Canadian that received his accolades... what a wonderful honour.....
My favorite version ❤

Leonard Cohen does ! He brought this song to life by his own hand and voice ! She's great but , no one will ever do it better than him !
I will never forget that moment ever! I have yet to find a cover of this song more moving. It’s a masterpiece!
I still get teary-eyed when I watch that performance ❤

Her voice is unmistakable and she is a true Canadian National Treasure! She also likes to sing in bare feet! Gotta love KD Lang! ❤❤
So did Anne Murray! Interesting...
@@kathcasey2090 so did Rita McNeil. (or Macneil?)

Yes - sitting here crying.

One of KDs finest moments… still gets me all these years later. Her performance of it at the Olympics was one of the greatest moments in music ever.
She sang Crying at the Roy Orbison memorial concert and it was incredible. A 4 minute standing ovation.

K.D. Lang is a very great artist, with complete control and complete empathy.
I'm so proud of my fellow Canadians. Leonard for writing the song and KD for delivering the best version of it at the Olympics in Vancouver.

Celine Dion Barbara Streisand Whitney Houston....so many others and they don’t come close to KD she sings with every part of her being, she transports you and when she shares her gift with this piece of music you don’t realise you are crying until the tears fall off your chin. I met KD when she was still dancing in punk rock hair, western boots and an old school western ladies outfit like Loretta Lynn. She was performing at the Longhorn in Calgary. She outperformed so many acts you could go back everyday night and she was different. Followed her for a lifetime.

I first saw KD singing “Crying” with Roy Orbison on some TV variety show. Blew Me Away!
KD Lang is one of the few singers who can routinely bring me to tears....her singing is so emotive and so beautiful!
Me too!

"That's the type of performance that make you put all your money in the offering basket." Best compliment ever : )
So soothing
Leonard Cohen was one amazing poet and songwriter, but his voice was (in my opinion, only) not able to recognise the fullest extent of beauty in his songs. He could convey emotion well enough, but it's like comparing a pop singer's rendition of Nessum Dorma to Pavarotti's.
@@deathandcats I don't deny that but even angels can't make a really badly written song move the soul. I don't think Mr Cohen ever described himself as a singer; a poet yes, many times. And that's what he was. Canada's poet; he will be forever missed.
KD is another amazing Canadian musical icon. She always, ALWAYS gets a standing ovation.

Thx K.D.
How has someone never heard KD Lang? Especially her version of Hallelujah. You should watch the performance she did at the Olympics.
