Shortly before he passed away, Leonard Cohen was given the opportunity to hear Pentatonix’s version of his song and he said it was the finest cover of “Hallelujah” he’d ever heard. RIP Mr Cohen.
Its really tough tho, cause they all have something so incredibly unique to them. And they’ve grown so much during these years. But Mitch😍 Yeah he is so Damn amazing🤗
So, in 2014 the Recording Academy who is responsible for the Grammys changed one arrangement category. That category had been had been Best Arrangement - Instrumental for eons. In 2014, they decided to change that category to Best Arrangement - Instrumental or A Capella. I am convinced they did that because of Pentatonix. I can't prove it...but Pentatonix did win that category 2 years in a row. And no other A Capella group has ever won a Grammy. 😉
They have three Grammys. The first was for Daft Punk, which you have reacted to. The second was for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, an instrumental by Tchaikovsky. A band that doesn't use instruments singing a song that doesn't have words. The third was for being Dolly Parton's backup band singing Jolene.
Their harmonies, especially when they crescendo and sustain a momentary high level of volume, are so so tight and electric that it often sounds like it's coming out of some sort of machine. Beyond incredible. . .
Fil, please keep reacting. I listen to you more than ANYONE else. There are 100s of people to react to Pentatonix, but I always listen to you first. You're the best!
This incredible song by Leonard Cohen actually has something like 50+ verses, and so every performer gets to construct their own version, using the verses they feel fits what they want to say.
I love this song, but the lyrics I feel are often misunderstood. You're right, it's an indictment, and I think a lot of people see it as as a celebration instead. "Hallelujah" as an exclamation gets used as a word of joy and affirmation/celebration, but this song celebrates loss and grief. Done properly, it will bring you to tears as you find that sense of despair/loss ("It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.") They do it right!
If you love rap pentatonix has an amazing cover of can't hold us by macklemore! Also their original song is upbeat I don't think it's technically a rap but is really upbeat and fun!
You mean their original song Sing? Well, it's got a bit of rap in it from Kevin, but it's mostly singing. Still, it's so much fun and puts a smile on your face. But yeah, I second the suggestion of Can't Hold Us. Everybody but Avi raps in that one and they're all fabulous. (Avi doesn't need to rap, he can just rattle your soul with his bass. That's good enough for me.)
The bass is Avi, in the beanie with the beard. He is a classically trained basso profundo and has been known to blow out speakers at shows, and can also do overtone singing. He left the band a couple years back for family and personal stuff, amicably, and helped them find his replacement, Matt.
They’ve won 3 Grammys so far. First was for their “Daft Punk” medley, the second one was for their arrangement of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, and the last one was for their duet with Dolly Parton on her classic “Jolene”. All were well-deserved.
Is this the time where we inform you that PTX can rap as well? Recommendations: Can't Hold Us, Thriftshop, No, Starships, Problem, We Are Ninjas, Sing! (an original PTX track). There's also their appearance on Drop the Mic
I've been waiting for SOMEONE to realize this is a song about the pain humans cause each other...the pain of the betrayed.. and the betrayers' triumphant shout of "Hallelujah!" is perverse when used in this context. The lyrics are heartbreaking.
A wonderful appreciation. I love your comments about them “capturing the spirit” of the song. That illuminates what I think of as a core PTX ambition for every song they do, and, for me, they succeed. They add to my happiness every time I listen. And you did too with this reaction, thank you.
One of their nicest performances. Several of their Christian sourced songs are top notch. Also react to Mary Did You Know, Amazing Grace, Silent Night, and more. Great reaction, as always.
It was the first song I heard from them,,, I've been under his influence ever since,,, you almost expected Jesus to appear on the tape for these heavenly voices.
I love how you reacted to the emotional component of them singing this song. They are exceptionally talented but beyond that it triggers a primal reaction of our hearts and spirits and that’s what makes it profound
I love your roller coaster metaphor - I can just see, after all of that building to the glorious climax, breathing deeply and gliding comfortably into the platform, almost as if the mother goddess is saying, “Your journey is done child. Come, breathe deeply and rest your soul.”
I'm just tickled pink that you are doing all their songs.. That's So Freaking Amazing cause I have always loved them... Thanks Fil !! Your are the greatest ❣️
Do you know what i love watching you do any Pentatonix reactions, it really gives me a lift when i see you turn your chair around when you get the shivers up your arms as if thats the only way you can deal with it. I also love Pentatonix, i listen to them every day and i am a 66 year old woman from the UK. Love it.
If you think they "took you to church" in this one, wait for Amazing Grace. I didn't think they could match Hallelujah, but oh my my my my! Both of these songs make me feel like I have a low voltage electric current running through my entire body and I end up a shivering, quivering puddle of emotion by the end. I never realized that layers of goosebumps could feel like they were vibrating! ❤
They do have 3 Grammys so far: 2 for best arrangement: Daft Punk and Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy 1 for best country group performance: Jolene (w/ Dolly Parton)
Another great choice 😁. The live version is "better" in my opinion, but that's only because you really are immersed in how truly acapella it is because you're not distracted by the production value. This is still great though. Anyway I look forward to the next, and, as always, remain blessed. -Kev
Great reaction!! Someone once said if they get to the pearly gates and don’t hear Mitch’s angelic voice welcoming them, they’re turning around and I agree!
Thank you for choosing this ! It is spectacular. The Mojave Desert, CA. Each voice gets to shine here. Love Mitch's passionate voice. This is about a break up, not religious. Grammy wins for them, #1) DAFT PUNK Mashup, #2) Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker DANCE OF THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY, #3) JOLENE with Dolly Parton.
Your breakdown of their singing style is truly insightful and your enthusiasm is infectious. Just keep on going down that rabbit hole lots more to hear see
That was some highly satisfying Mitch face! What you are capturing about their mastery of dynamics is exactly what I love about Pentatonix. (I am not convinced their new album does this as well as their past work.) What a great reaction! Can't wait for your next!
I could see how emotional this was for you. I could tell Avi gave you the chills as well. I have to say that's how 90% of people who reacted to this song. Some cried more and some have more chills all over. I cried when Avi sang the part about Samson having his hair cut by Delilah. The emotion Avi sang it with was so strong. Samson broke his vow to the father by chasing an unclean woman who cut his hair off. It's painful because, our father cut his power and connection off too. That's why it's a broken hallelujah. He cried out to heaven and was not able to be heard anymore. This I imagine was how the fallen angels felt when they disobeyed their maker. They could no longer connect to the love they once had. It's a very touching song and PTX I feel did it the best. I loved your reaction to this. I love to see how others react to this song because, I love to see the build up on their faces.
You are my fave reaction person ever I love your excitement and I’m like u watched all dimash vids and now pentatonic fan too I’m following ur reactions love them mate your the best
want to be mind blown!! listen to this song live!!
And there it is ... the Mitch Face! You, my friend, have been Mitchslapped!
hahahahahahaaaaaaa
"Please give these people a flipping Grammy!" Well they have 3 lol so you're good
Your Pentatonix reactions are the best.
They gave em three grammys daft punk, dance of sugar plum fairy, and dolly parton n ptx jolene
I was totally going to say the same thing!! Haha
I always felt this arrangement of "Hallelujah" deserved a grammy Grammy too.

That just made my day.
I appreciate your authentic response to Leonard Cohen's iconic, Hallelujah. Long live Leonard Cohen and his never-ending!
The Mitch face gets me every time
My favorite part of every video!
@@SilverFlame819 watching the Mitch slapped is a spectator sport, pass the popcorn please
Everyone who’s heard this before just waiting for Mitch once Phil says “we’re at the top now and looking down” 😂😂 Here he comes!
When the members of PTX were asked who was the best singer - all of them said "Mitch". He is so versatile - LOVE his voice!
Its really tough tho, cause they all have something so incredibly unique to them. And they’ve grown so much during these years. But Mitch😍 Yeah he is so Damn amazing🤗
I agree Mitch is the absolute best and then there was Avi next. Yet, they're all great singers and love their voices.
I, too, am captivated by Mitch's voice! He is so mesmerizing!
I cant pick a best including the beatboxer, thats a talent all it's own .
Love the Rollercoaster metaphor!!

yes Avi's bass always reaches untouched corners of the soul
Love the Mitch face. We have all been there. Also love your input. Thoughtful.
Beautiful. Simply Beautiful.
Imagine has probably the ultimate build up to what Pentaholics call the Wall Of Sound
It's a must ASAP
Nah I give that designation to The Prayer. There's 4 walls of sound in that sucker.
They have got 3 Grammy’s, they do deserve Grammy’s for every song they did/do I think, they are amazing

"A band that doesn't use instruments singing a song that doesn't have words." LOL. Best description I've heard so far and so, so true. Well said!

You know its getting real when Fable is siting backwards in his chair. Ha! Next level! ♡
I love when you said, " and when they do that, that's when you feel like you are human". You nailed it. Thanks for great content. Im a huge PTX fan.

Great reaction video. Please do a reaction video on Pentatonix with Amazing Grace, it is absolutely beautiful and brought many people to tears.

Well... this one is not a christian song one bit. We could ask the composer, had he not already passed off to pastures greener
Silent Night is incredible, sung in a church nave. Simple, stunning. And Run to You is straight vocals, haunting!
@Ola Bergvall Totally agree that it’s not a Christian song - especially as it’s composer was Jewish.
It was the first song I heard from them,,, I've been under his influence ever since,,, you almost expected Jesus to appear on the tape for these heavenly voices.
