  • Turn any water-based (acrylic, latex) paint into a wood stain, very easily.
    The "white-wash" shown in this video can approximate the look of pickling, although pickling is more traditionally a staining process used on oak.

    Not sure if you ever saw the technique, but you can stain wood with coffee or tea then spray on the apple cider vinegar/steel wool solution to set the stain. Non-toxic and the coffee or tea gives it a very warm, rich color. Oh, and Crafsmama, please let Crafsman get an image stabilizer gimbal. Truth be told, it's not for him, it's for us; you don't want us gettin' sea-sick from a shakey-cam, do you? Thanks!

    Something to keep in mind though... Watering down acrylics thins out the polymers that allows the paint to stick to the wood. It will not take long for it to fade due to physical contact (like furniture) or microscopic flaking (such as walls, etc.)
    I would recommend either diluting the paint or sealing the well dried (overnight if possible) finished project with low odor acrylic sealer. Especially if it's too be used outside.

    I think it's okay to paint over wood if it makes you happy. There's some woods like cherry or walnut that don't make sense financially to paint over, but paint makes for a very durable finish and it can hide imperfections. Solid wood furniture is definitely a premium option in today's world, and some people want to show off the natural beauty of the wood, but I think that a painted finish can be beautiful too in some applications.

      I found if I sand it lightly -because it raised the woods grain a little bit- with a high number sand paper (I had 1200 & did it quick) and I applied a 2nd layer of the paint/water mixture .. then did a nice finish. The end result was so beautiful. A second layer isn’t necessary but it did add amazing depth. 🌹

    • @debrajol3585
      @debrajol3585 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JP-lg8ml I know it sounds crazy but I use Windsor & Newton’s Professional Spray Gloss Varnish when I want a really high gloss finish.. and then I do the last glossy finish. It brings OUT the woods grains shapes/colors amazingly well. I get it at Michaels with a coupon code online.. it’s back with the acrylic & oil paints on the top row usually. There’s 2 cans that look the same so be sure to check for ‘Professional’ .. the other says multi-use or something & that’s not it. But yah.. I do light coats, spraying left to right and then top to bottom. On the 3rd or 4th coat something magical happens! If the piece is light use this can be the end after it cures.
      It does smell terrible so I do it in the garage quickly and run inside after each spraying .. but it’s so pretty. Try on a test piece tho bc your humidity or something may be different from mine.
      I use this on my acrylic art pieces and one day I wondered how it would be on a little table. The results are great!! 💜💜💜

    Oh Wow Crafsman!
    I was just about to start on a small project, and didn't want to buy expensive wood stains. I am very appreciative of this video, it is right on time for me. Thank You!!
    About, do I think wood should be painted? Well, personally I am not a big fan of painted wood, but an antique dealer friend of mine said, alot of nice old furniture would have been lost to rot, if it hadn't been painted. She explained, a lot of the furniture she acquired over time, came out of old barns, and the paint kept it protected.
    So, I guess I am thankful because I have some nice antiques that were formally painted.
    Thanks again for the video!!
    Also, Mrs CrafsMama, Crafsman said he could use a gimble..... I hope i said that right.
    Have a great day!!
