How to GROW or SHRINK Silicone Molds! | Make Larger or Smaller Copies of Resin Casts

  • Here's a way to EXPAND or SHRINK silicone molds. I show both mineral spirits as well as specialty silicone solvent.
    I also use both Mold Star 15 Fast and Mold Star 16 Slow in this video. The techniques should work with most any silicone molds.
    The mold expanding trick should even work with molds you have lying around.

      @TheCraftsMan ...how long did you have to wait for your silicon to shrink down after that initial demold? I cast and demolded about 2 days ago...getting some funky looking pieces right now. Used 50/50 silicon to mineral spirits. Wanting to see if I can scale down 1/12 scale heads to 1/18 scale 🤔
      Wondering if a dehydrator would help?

      @@David-ch7yb As a kid and teenager I made puppets, built spaceships, and was generally always making, drawing, or building something. I went to school and got an Industrial Design degree then reached out to a couple toy companies. My first job was at Mattel / Fisher-Price in New York.
      As for salary, it depends. A freelance designer can charge anywhere between $60 - $300/hour depending on experience, the client, and the service provided.
      20 years ago, as an employee at Mattel, salaries started around 40K but included a pension, benefits, and stock in the company. I'm sure it's higher now. Most designers I know make between $300 - $500 per day.

    One of the mai problems with cheap silicone diy molds with the pure caulking is how thick it is. Using mineral spirits helps but most crafters saw this as a problem as it weakened it and would shrink. Now that I consider this, I see that I could sculpt my minis at a higher scale and use this trick to compress the detail on purpose both with high quality silicone for end products and diy silicone for doing preliminary molds.

      It always makes me wonder who dislikes and why? If they don’t like the presentation/presenter, just leave n not come back, this channel is not for you. They found an “error” in the subject presentation, then you leave a note saying “I disagree, you need to do **** instead/as well. Or are they just trolls who vote down anything n everything.
      It must be a rather sad life if all you have is the love of the dislike button.
      Personally I have only ever down ticked a video is if the content is unwatchable quality or the presenter is sharing some pretty vile views or actions. But those are channels I won’t sub to, or view other videos by them. I don’t waste my life looking to be offended enough to dislike something.

      The dislike button is there as a quick way to the creator to say that you disliked the video but cared enough to let them know. Dislikes rank the video higher for interaction and ultimately help the video reach more viewers than no interaction at all.
      It's not a personal attack on the channel or the fans of the channel. Think of it this way, if someone dislikes your video or a video made by a favorite channel of yours, they are still helping the creator.

    This was awesome to see in action, thank you so much for taking the time to make such a great video about it! I've got a wee little bit of Oomoo 30 left right now, might have to see how that fares with the shrinkification. :-) You're the best, Crafsman!

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ricketron, let me know! As far as I can tell, it works with pretty much any silicone. Making a shrink mold typically means your silicone will cure slower (so like the Mold Star 16 Fast will take longer than the normal 30 minutes). But you should be able to also make a regular Oomoo 30 mold and let the final cured mold soak in mineral spirits if you want. Either way. Hope it works!

    11 days in room is best for shrink molds I've found if you want no warping and proper scale. I do this as well its addicting and fun. Low order mineral spirits will shrink it faster and xylene will completely shrink it in a day tho I don't recommend that it's highly toxic. Thanks for the expansion mold process i never knew this about soaking them. Awesome video.
