    To make my fake kintsugi I've found it helps to slightly bevel the edges on your broken pieces with a cheap dollar store diamond file. Then use thin super glue to put it back together. Paint over the cracks with metallic (water based) acrylic and let it dry. Don't worry if you go over. May take a few coats to fill. After the paint has dries use a slightly damp cloth to rub over the filled area to smooth/sand the area down level and clean off the surface paint. Also it is pronounced more like keent-su-gee. The letter "I" in japanese is pronounced like"ee"

    Just when I thought I couldn't love you any more...I am proven wrong again! I LOVE that you did this! I love this concept and had JUST written about it recently. Here's what I wrote: "Contemplate this thought today. Imagine that whatever hardships you’ve encountered on your journey that have “cracked” you, were an essential part of your growth - to make you into the fabulously unique individual you are today. See if you can imagine yourself lovingly, painstakingly dusting those cracks with gold. Stand back and admire them; appreciate them; and maybe even be grateful for them. " I also love that you show yourself just trying something, even if it doesn't turn out perfectly the first time - gives us all more confidence to just try. Crafsman, I've tried this before, and I found that the gold mica powder I used seemed to act like an accelerant in the epoxy I'd chosen (PC-Clear). You might consider just mixing up the epoxy as normal (with no additive) then just dusting the seams with the powder so it clings to the epoxy that's squeezed out of the seams. I really love how the concrete bottle turned out though! Also, as much as new windows cost these days, if you tell someone you're window shopping while you're looking at windows, they might just think you're rich....

    In Hepburn romanization for Japanese, the "i" is equivalent to "ee" in English. "Keen"tsugi
    The root "kin" means metal, usually of value - genkin is the word for cash, due to coinage being prominent in the Japanese monetary system. Typically, kin refers to gold though, where as gin ("g", like in gray) means silver.

    • @censusgary
      @censusgary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The bottle looks great! The only improvement would be to fill up some of the deeper cracks with something (polymer clay? Super glue and baking soda?) before you add the gold. The epoxy method clearly needs a much brighter gold powder and very controlled application. I actually have a handmade ceramic pint cup that I've been wanting to do the epoxy method with for years now. Thanks for making some mistakes for me :) Maybe I'll actually get around to doing it.

      I agree with this 100%! I thought of doing a filler but wanted to see just how it would turn out with straight gold leaf wedged into it. That ended up being a sort of filler in itself, but still - you're right - adding the gold leaf on top of a filler would have given an even nicer result.

    The milk bottle cast looks great! A tip for repairing bowls and plates is after applying the epoxy, put the object into a bag of plastic beads or pellets. The pellets support the weight of the object so the joints don't open up. Any that stick to the object can usually be snapped off easily. I got a bag of cheap plastic pellets used for making a weighted blanket, which I had used to try my first injection molding cast, and they worked great to glue a plate back together! Keep on steady craftin!

  • @saml7610
    @saml7610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I did this back in the day with epoxy and brass filings (gold is expensive and all that). It was still beautiful and my favorite mug managed to live another ten years after that before finding itself thoroughly crushed when it fell under the tractor. I utilized a "food safe" epoxy for the whole thing, but this being back in the late 90's, I've since realized it probably wasn't actually food safe considering it's not available for purchase anymore. There may be decent replacements out there today, though, I just haven't looked.
    As long as you're not putting it in the microwave (the metal content can do some crazy things in there). Another thing that I learned was that it was a good idea to use more epoxy than you need. It should be flowing out of the joints so you can get a good surface finish without pits later on.
    Often it helps to construct a jig if you can. I ended up using extra foam packing material and I carved it to hold the pieces in place while the epoxy cured. That's really the hardest part - getting the epoxy to the right working texture and then putting the puzzle back together... you don't want to be asking yourself which piece goes where in the moment, you want to be FULLY prepared and have it all planned out.
    The final recommendation I have for anyone trying this is to do a number of test pieces (just like CrafsMan did) before working on your favorite mug. That's what I did, and the first two mugs I fixed were horrendous. The third looked pretty good, and then I felt ok going in to fix the favorite mug.

    I loved how all of them turned out but that concrete bottle looked as though it was a historical relic. Love the videos!

    I mean this in the most polite way possible. Your videos help me sleep and no it isn't because they're boring. The content is great! Your voice is so soothing that I get so, so relaxed :)

    CrafsMan, this vidja is sublime. I’m having an epiphany right now. The process of glorifying the mending of a cherished vessel is exactly what humanity should embrace at this moment. “Equal under god”, the creator.

    Thank you so much for this demonstration! I have not seen this technique since art school. There are a number of pieces around my house that are hand made pottery that have had "little accidents." I will practice on some mass produced things just as you have, and hopefully, bring the originals back to life when I feel more confidence!
