    Hornady outfitter is loaded with a far better hunting bullet for big heavy game but goats have VERY thin skin. People think goats are bulletproof and end up poking holes in them over and over. I’ve guided many and the fastest kills are with deer type bullets . The eldx is a great choice because it opens up fast . Either way …have a great time !

      I agree with you 100%! Too many people use a tougher bullet and it just seems to pass through the goats. I shot mine with a Hornady SST and it dropped like a sack of potatoes

      My 308 loves the Precision Hunter 178 grain. They’re super consistent loads and it shoots 1/2 MOA with them at 100-300 yards except one out of probably 20 rounds breaks out to about an inch at 100.

    I used the 180 grain gmx from my commercial mauser 98 centurion 123 30. 06 and its a winner. Drops deer in their tracks so im sure it will take down elk and moose just as easy. I have mine set for 3 inches high at 100 yards for a 230 yards zero. Perfect round or hunting, 65 a box, abit expensive but its all worth it when that first bullet goes into a deer, elk, moose, caribou. I love hunting.

  • @josevelez7539
    @josevelez7539 ปีที่แล้ว

    Didn’t see whether the rifle is threaded or not or if you have a muzzle brake, but your rifle has a considerable muzzle rise, up and to the left. Again, consistency is key with any shooting position or equipment.
    Consider a muzzle brake such as the Ultradyne Apollo Max or similar or just shoot it without one.
    You may get a bit more consistency if you preload your bipod a bit!
    I was successful at downing a cow elk last week with the Hornady 162 gr ELDX. One double lung shot was all I needed at 407 yards with my SAKO S20 in 7mm Rem Mag.
    I tested different bullets and can honestly say that a rifle tends to like one bullet over other weights and even brands. I trust Hornady’s brand and their 4DOF app. Hasn’t failed me yet!

    It looks like to me, esp when compared to Federal ammo, that the factory velocity on Hornady is significantly slower when shot thru the same barrel. And haven't you come close to factory velocity with more Federal ammo? I am beginning to wonder if they are skimping on powder given the crazy situation with ammo since Covid began...

    they say the .22lr are picky with ammo but that will translate to all rifles actually. I run a howl 1500 6.5 creed at the moment, 18.5" barrel 1/8 twist and a 4" front mounted suppressor. best bullet is the 160gr RN from hornady but all the coppers from barnes works flawless. the same ammo you used, precision hunter coups a bit under .5 at a 100 in mine so thinking that one type is the best for all would result in no way. all guns are different and like different "food"

    Good review. Just a little bit of info but don’t believe what the box tells you about velocity. Best to chronograph it yourself out of your rifle. Most factory ammo is way less than what it claims on the box. This is because they use 24” to 26” test barrels and not real world hunting barrels. Also the deviation between shots if too extreme causes wider groups. Maybe a good bullet and hand loading could produce better groups where you have more control over deviations

    My t3x superlite did alright with the GMX as well 👍 only thing I would say which certainly shouldn’t make as big of grouping difference as you saw is that when switching from lead to copper bullets one always seems to act funny in my experience. I’ve heard it’s from the different hardness of the coppers in your barrel, could be false, but idk. My guns seem to agree.

      I just changed to gmx bullets in my .300 win mag this year. I hand load them super accurate and damn at some penetration. Killed a big doe yesterday 275 yards solid shoulder hit massive wound channel and was a complete pass thru with a large exit hole. I know the 300 is much bigger than the 6.5 but still a deep penetrating bullet none the less. Would recommend this bullet to any hunter with any caliber.

      @@joshradford1989 thanks a lot, much appreciated. Yeah anything in .300 will kick some ass! I just picked up some of the newer Hornady GMX 6.5 140 gr. Still working on load development but so far looks promising. Note they’re pretty long bullets so current loads are compressed a little in 6.5 cm cases. Too bad not a whole lot of load data yet for these newer GMXs. My buddy’s 6.5 PRC is extremely potent too with a little lighter recoil than the comparable long actions.

    You might ditch the 9 inch bipod and use a bag as a front support and tuck your support hand under the rear of the stock, your position although may be steady looking through the scope probably doesn’t offer good follow though. You may get get results out of the eld x by building a better position and getting rid of the bipod, however your groups were pretty decent with the other ammo so maybe it just doesn’t like it, my Tikka hammers with the eldx

    unfortunately you are restricted to the powder, primer and over all length of the factory ammo. if you where to load this bullet using different components and O.A.L, id bet you could find a combo that would shoot well at targets. for hunting.... I play it differently... I call it "hunting accuracy". I will not shoot past a give range, to develop that range I use the ballistics numbers from the chrono. 400 yards is my personal limit. if I can hit a 6" circle at max range and the 1800ft.lbs (for elk) are there, I am happy. At 100 yds. It will print around 1" or slightly over. the limits are lifted when you load your own, I would encourage you to learn from a vet re-loader if you have no experience. but the point is that the bullet is probably not the issue. if you are dead set on shooting a given bullet, factory ammo will limit your abilities from gun to gun
