I have been trying to only spend money two days a week, one for groceries and gas and the other for paying bills, etc. and then marking an X on the calendar for the days I don't spend money. I accomplished that goal this week! I was also able to keep my grocery bill $30 below what I allotted so that is a win! Also, I canned 12 jars of tomatoes and 12 jars of salsa. I will be canning pickles and pasta sauce tomorrow. Every little bit helps and I find when I limit myself to only two days of spending, I don't spend as much!

    • @sandrabryan9106
      @sandrabryan9106 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Marking no spend days on a calendar was how I got started and I also kept receipts in an envelope and recorded spending on outside of envelope. I also recorded all costs in a spending journal. After a year, I would add up my totals and discard of the envelopes with receipts. This really helped me to see were I was overspending and gradually got my costs down by challenging myself further.

My frugal moment of the week: Two years ago I dropped and broke my beloved Corning casserole dish. This week I found a perfect replacement at a thrift store for $4.99!! I was thrilled! Luckily I saved the lid and it fits the new casserole perfectly.

I was gifted hundreds of packages of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds. I was able to gift seeds to 12 other families and still have extras. What a blessing we all received. We are gardeners and have been preserving all spring and summer. Just completed canning 7 quarts of vegetable soup. Growing your own food requires initial and ongoing preparation and funds, but the knowledge and bounty acquired weighs out the costs. Nothing tastes better than homegrown tomatoes! BLT is my favorite.

I was in Walmart when they put out the marked down meat. I got 3 whole 6+# chickens for less than $1/#, I got 10# of bacon for $12, bought a solid wood side table in excellent condition from a thrift store for $10.
I’m in Texas with 100+ degree weather, bought some plexiglass and made my front and back door windows double pain. Sealing around all the air leaks I can find in my house. Our AC has been working overtime trying to keep up, so any savings will help now and into the cold months.
I use appliances in the early morning to cook, clean and dry clothes. I cook in batches so we can just heat supper in the microwave. We are using fans for circulation to help it feel cooler.
Just paid my second almost $400 electric bill so hoping the improvements make a big difference in the coming months.
You are probably asking why I didn’t do all of this sooner… I have been recovering from a broken arm and rotator cuff surgery so I wasn’t physically able to tackle it but, it gave me time to plan. And since I have been released without restrictions, I am doing all of this carefully as therapy instead of spending $70/week for rehab.

Years ago I had a friend that would mock me for buying my children and myself clothes from the thrift shop. She would say, "Eww, they're used". But, as soon as you wash brand new clothes they are used anyway. And buying thrifted clothes means I have more variety in my wardrobe while spending less money.

I have bought from thrift stores for many years, especially since I donate so much myself. And knowing how much of what I donate are brand new items bought impulsively, I know others have done the same. My younger years I bought from stores but I will say the furniture, or clothes, shoes, purses that brought me most pleasure were bought from the thrift stores at a fraction of the cost. Most items, including the furniture were almost brand new.
In fact tomorrow I will be donating a brand new ninja food processor and blender combo so somebody will get a bargain.
My frugal win this week was getting a $17 package of chicken breast for $2, a $9 pack of chicken drumsticks for $2 and $8 ground turkey for $2.

I took a chance one year and bought flower seeds from Dollar Tree. They were 4 packages for $1. I was surprised that they grew. When they finally started to die, I harvested the seeds and used them next year. One year we got orange Tiger Lilies for free. We call them Ditch Lilies around here. They love to spread. Here on the old homestead we produce a good portion of our food. I encourage others with room to plant, get a garden in next spring.

I decided to wait till the beginning of next week to grocery shop. I could do that now, but If I wait till next week, it'll be a month since I've shopped, and I'll be back at my usual system of shopping only once a month. I've been doing that for a long time.... years. When I lost most of my food stamps in the spring, it threw me through a loop, where I felt like I had to stock up more, and I ended up shopping frequently and spending too much! I couldn't do that for very long! I've just come back to my normal, and it feels so good!

Your gardens are beautiful and both recipes looked delicious. I especially liked the tips on putting outfits together with the style you have chosen. I have not shopped in thrift stores for clothes but certainly would now if I needed clothes. I bought well-made, simple clothes on sales when I worked in an office that can be dressed up or down. I am still wearing them ten years after retiring for the most part. I have basic darker colored pants and print tops. I can mix and match quite a few outfits with them so don't need a large wardrobe. I also like to wear the camisoles or tank tops under my tops due to V-necks or to be warmer in winter. My win this week is not buying more hobby items when there was a great sale going on. I have plenty to use up already and gave myself a stern talking to! Lol. Thank you for all the inspiration and encouragement! 💕💕🙏🙏

Two frugal wins this week: I bought some basic sweaters at a thrift store to wear over my summer house dresses as the weather turns cooler. I really prefer dresses lately but all of mine are sleeveless. Also I shopped the “world food” aisle at our local Meijer and bought several 8 ounce bags of Mexican pasta for 24 cents a bag that has a sell by date of 2025! But on the flip side, we did go over our budget when we were in Ohio Amish Country at Walnut Creek Cheese and another bulk food store. What we bought there will probably last us six months. I’m not going to feel too bad about that as I won’t have to buy those items at regular NE Ohio prices this winter. Love that coneflowers are now in colors that are so bright - remind me of the bright colors of zinnias. Have a great weekend.

Great video as always. I was especially interested in how you mix and match your wardrobe. Did you know that Princess Ann - the late Queen's daughter - STILL wears outfits that she wore back in the 1980s? She just turned 73 and I saw a show about her (as a Canadian, I am a fan of the Royals) and she has recycled MANY outfits for decades. So there should be no stigma in wearing retreads!! If it's good enough for the Royals, it is good enough for all!!!! Thanks for your tips and ideas.

Unfortunately, our family traveled for my sister's memorial service but we did it on as much of a budget as we could. I shopped around for a car rental. I packed sandwiches for me and Dad along with snacks. We flew the most budget airline we could but it was still a lot. We shared an AirBNB with my other sister and her husband who bought breakfast and sandwich makings. The one lunch we had out was at the Amish market near my sister in KY. I haven’t had any this week…had a few fails but nothing major and more in the lines of food waste. But thankfully, our city has citywide composting for all homes so even wasted food isn’t really wasted as it gets composted and is used to fertilize the city green spaces. I’ll chalk it up to a donation to Mother Nature, 😂 but I really hate food waste and work hard at avoiding it. Speaking of food waste…well…I broke the container i had put my farm fresh blueberries I bought in and glass shattered everywhere. I had to throw them out Vs composting for safety purposes as there were little shards of glass everywhere mixed w/ the blueberries. I know you cannot compost glass shards. 😢 Oh well. Next week will be better.

My Frugal win this past week was something pretty cool for me. I had gone to visit my younger daughter she lives about an hour away and she wanted to take me to a farmers market that was at an apple orchard. When we were walking through the market I grabbed a bottle of apple cider went to the cash register to pay. Behind the cash register I saw a table set up with a few bags of something and a sign that said free. I asked the store owner what the free sign was about. They told me it was a few of their specialty baking mixes that they sell that were past the expiration date and they could no longer sell them. I said would I be able to have them they said of course. One was a beer bread that I only had to add two or three ingredients to and the other one was scones. I looked at the expiration date it was exactly a week past expiration which is hardly old at all. I brought them both home put them in freezer bags and put them in my freezer and when I want a special treat for our family in the future I will have those to pull out. What was neat about it was each of those bags though they were small were $6.00. So it was a total of $12 worth of free treats for the future.❤

I just recently found your channel and am so grateful to have so many videos to catch up on. I grew up without money and am still of few means, but because of it I am resourceful, independent and have learned quite a few skills out of necessity. I have the least of all of my friends as far as technology, new devices or unnecessary appliances, but I am grateful and content to live with what I have. I don't live like my peers and I couldn't care less about what most of society and social media seem to idolize. I am proud to know how to cook, fix things myself and make do with what I have. I love that your videos not only acknowledge and normalize this purposeful, grateful and simple way of living, but you celebrate it with genuine enthusiasm. It confirms for me that I am not weird in a negative way, I just have different priorities and am a resilient and resourceful woman! ❤❤❤

I have a suggestion for onions....Sweet onions are only available in our grocery stores a few months of the year. When they are, I like to stock up, chop them, and sauté them until tender (in either butter or olive oil) over the outdoor grill. The smokey flavor of the grill adds a great ‘extra’ to the onions. Once cooled, they can be frozen in 1-onion serving containers. Great way to have sweet onions for recipes all year long.

This week, I made pumpkin spice muffins and herb & cheese scones. I also stretched 2 pork chops (no bone) into 4 dinner servings by cubing and adding onion, chopped peppers, pineapple, soya sauce, a bit of BBQ sauce and seasonings to make a crock pot stew and served it over rice. I like making very distinct looks out of thrifted clothing by adding a pop of colour or an accessory (jewelry, scarf, watch, belt, purse, etc.)

Thank you for the wonderful video Emmy and Paul ❤ That chocolate cream pie looks delicious and I will definitely be making some homemade tomato sauce to stock up for winter. My frugal win this week was a homemade draught excluder for our back door. I took an old duvet cover, cut it to length, then filled it with old bits of fabric (stained baby clothes etc), then tied both ends with some pretty ribbon from my sewing box. I'm so pleased how it turned out! Clothes didn't end up in a landfill and I will be saving on energy bills this winter by keeping the draught out. Best wishes ❤

We had a small amount of spaghetti left, not enough for us to eat for a meal again, and I had used penne noodles, instead of spaghetti noodles. Instead of throwing it out I sautéed two cups of green peppers and a small onion and added a can of tomato sauce and a can of Italian seasoned diced tomatoes then added the leftover pasta and sauce and made stuffed green pepper soup. It all got eaten and no waste.

Hello there: at our cottage this past spring, we needed to replace the water line from the road to the cottage: about 100 ft. We have been waiting almost 3 months for a landscape company to come and fill the trench and reseed the lawn. Today my husband and I picked up 2 loads of topsoil and a large bag of grass seed and repaired it ourselves. Total cost of repair $120. It was backbreaking work for us old folk but we're damn proud of how it turned out.

My frugal win for this week was Acme had celery on sale for a dollar a bag I’d like to make soups during the winter. What a great deal on the celery. I cut the celery into disks and blanch them, pat them dry and put them in the small freezer bags in the deep freeze and pull a bag out, slam it on the counter to break away what I need and put it back in the freezer.

My big win is realising that both my childrens bank accounts are finally earning decent interestand being added each month. For so many years it has been basically 1%. I started when they were born adding about $100 a month every month. Finally the compounding and interest are starting to grow. It is a higher rate than term deposits but only if you add something each month. The bank counts on you being too busy to add money, a dollar is enough. And hence they dont give you the high interest bonus that month.
They didn't count on this smart frugal mamma! I never forget.

We have found a grocery store in our area that puts all meat that has a Best Buy date the day before or the day of in a frozen section. Yesterday we found 3# chubs of 80% lean ground beef marked down to $5.99. $2 a pound is unheard of around here lately. I bought six of them…four for us and two for my sister. I froze three of ours and my sister's. I cut one of them in half and put them each in a quart freezer bag and flattened them for easy freezing and thawing. We have a ricotta meatloaf recipe that calls for 1.5# of ground beef, so we are ready for two meatloaf meals. I didn’t have time yesterday to do anything more than freeze the others, but in the next few weeks, I’ll take two of them out and fry them up. I’ll turn about 4 pounds into a big batch of chili for the freezer and put the other 2 in 1 quart freezer bags and put them back in the freezer. At least once every 2 weeks, I take a package of precooked ground beef out of the freezer and make either tacos, sloppy Joe’s, or meat sauce for pasta. What I’ve discovered lately is that I don’t really use a whole pound for any of those recipes, so as I’m freezing now, I’m only going to freeze about 12 ounces in each (that’s precooked weight), so I’ll get 4 packages out of 3 pounds of meat. It’s my favorite quick meal tip. I didn’t even thaw the cooked meat, I just add it to a jar of pasta sauce, or a jar of chili sauce for sloppy Joes, or water and taco seasonings for tacos. The meat thaws and heats up right along with the sauces. Saves a lot of trips to fast food restaurants at the last minute because dinner can always be on the table in less than 20 minutes. (And just to be clear, I didn’t buy all the chubs the store had…there were still planets left for other people!) 😉

Your tip about breaking up a store bought graham cracker crust was brilliant! I'm going to try that! Also, my mom likes to bake those crusts for a few minutes to add more flavor. My most recent frugal mission is to try not to waste the multitude of grape tomatoes our ONE plant is producing! I pick bowls full of them each week. I am taking sandwich bags of grape tomatoes to give the staff at my Dad's care center, sharing with neighbors, and taking them to church to see who I can bless. Our yellow cherry tomatoes are like candy, and I eat them daily on my large lunch salad. Bliss!
