Hi, I am a 76 year old grandma in Eastern Oregon. I love your program, thank you! When you mentioned vintage habits/ideas it brought to mind my paternal grandmother. She always had a small 2x3 inch beveled mirror on the sill above her kitchen sink to check her make up and hair if the door bell rang. She also always had a small bottle of Jergens hand lotion in the original cherry-almond fragrance next to her mirror. It has always reminded me of her and I have always used it myself. I had 2 sons but when they had children they each had daughters. From the time they were little they always used my Jergens lotion and always received a small bottle of it in their Christmas stockings. Both my granddaughters still say it reminds them of 'home'! I am so grateful that Jergens has kept their original fragrance in a world that always wants to change things. As of today, I have a bottle at my kitchen sink and bathroom sink! This is just a general comment to let you know how much you have changed my life since I started watching your channel. I am becoming a wiser shopper and a better, more creative cook. My family now asks if a meal came from your channel! Our kitchen waste has decreased dramatically and our food is healthier and tastier. I've been using Maybelline mascara for over 50 years, and Sally Hanson Hard As Nails for nearly as long, and if I really want a blast from the past, I buy a jar of Noxema. One sniff and I am 15 again. 😊

Been using backs of envelopes for year-wonderful tip! Another tip - we get alot of junk mail and often the backs of the paper are blank. We cut them into quarters and use for notes, short lists, reminders, etc.
I do the same thing.
I do that too. Any time there is blank space, I cut it up for note paper.

Me too, been doing it for almost 40 years. All the school notices the schools sent home with my children all the way from grade school on up got folded twice and cut, then stapled at the top to hold them together. Kept one pad next to the land line phone to take messages on as well as grocery lists and more. 😊
Years ago I wanted to come up with a seasoning for chicken that tastes similar to the KFC chicken seasoning. I wasn't happy with any of the copycat recipes that I found so I tweaked and combined a couple of them to make this blend. It's very good on roast chicken but it's also nice on other dishes. I always make a double or triple batch to have on hand.
CHICKEN SEASONING
1 tablespoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/2 teaspoon sage
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon marjoram
Mix well and store in an airtight container.
Makes 3 tablespoons

My Grandma was a dressmaker and her go to stain remover was Lava soap. It removed blood, and was great on collars and cuffs on my dad's shirts too. A bar lasted for decades.
I love Fels Naptha soap for laundry stains.
Mom used this and I did too!

I grew up on a farm, so my Dad often worked on equipment, and did many other farm jobs. We always had Lava in the house too. It was rough as sandpaper, but did a great job of getting our hands clean!
I didn’t know other people used old envelopes too. 🙂 I like to cut the envelopes apart to get a very flat surface. And sometimes junk mail is only printed on one side so the empty side is good for lists. My favorite is to use colored greeting card envelopes for my grocery lists. We could all use a little more color in our lives. Thanks.

My grandmother gave me my first Betty Crocker book at the age of 16. I still go back to that book for recipes. Also, she showed me oil of Olay face cream when I was 15 I still use I have a lady today. My skin is beautiful last awful I don’t use tissues in my purse. I use a handkerchief handkerchief, vintage hanker chips are beautiful to look at one day I hope to make a quilt out of them. I’ve been saving them for a long time.

I've been using Dove soap for 40 years on my face and body.( I know people will laugh)but I also use Vicks vapor rub for various things. My nails grow so fast I can't keep polish looking good on them but I do polish my toenails. Fun video!

Yes to the Vicks vapor rub the minute I feel a cold coming on. That stuff is like magic. And if anyone watches The Big Bang Theory you know we sing Soft Kitty when we apply it. If you know, you know. 😂
I use it on my feet in the winter (for roughness) It's also good for removing white spots on toenails that have been polished a lot. Rub it in the nails put socks on and it the morning the spots should be gone. I use it for sore muscles too. This sounds weird but if you have an ear ache put a little on the outside area of your ear and it will help relieve the pain. Put some in the sink with hot water. Put your head down with a towel covering the entire sink area and it will clear your sinuses.
I forgot bug bites and scratches.
Pears soap. I used it in college as a facial cleanser and it’s now only $1.25 at the Dollar Tree. I introduced it to my daughter and she said it works well!

That strainer brought back my childhood!! I was standing on a stool at the kitchen counter in a hot humid kitchen with my parents and sister all busy around me like a well oiled machine!! I was so proud that I could help smash the tomatoes or apples!

I use Vaseline for skin care on my face, neck, upper chest, elbows, lower legs, and feet. Then I rub in the remaining bit on my hands. So smooth, soft, and hydrated. Vaseline is so flexible in it's usefulness.

Vaseline is great for multiple uses: a lip gloss, eyelash shine to make them appear longer, rub on hand and wear clean gloves over night to soften, rub on leather or patent leather shoes to clean and shine and many other uses. Thanks Emmy for this cozy video. It takes me back to making biscuits in 7th grade home economics when my loves of baking took off. I make a similar caserole as you do and sometimes top with dressing. Your bone broth must taste extra good. ❤😊❤
I should have taken home economics. I did take clothing for two years. Got an A on my blouse BUT the cuffs opened to the inside of my wrist Teacher did not notice. Oh, I'm a n awful cook.
My dermatologist told me to use vaseline on a biopsy place and not to use anything else. It healed just fine.
Right now my husband is dealing with the end stages of cancer. He can still get in the shower with a chair to sit in. When his hospice nurse comes for his shower, they use his Old Spice hair and body wash. He loves it, smells so good.

A bit late to the party but I use Ponds Cold Cream to remove my makeup. I've been doing it for about 5 years now. I remember back in the 70s when my paternal grandmother lived with us. We only had one bathroom (three adults, three kids, no shower, just a cast iron tub btw!) My dad installed a little medicine cabinet for my nana to store her personal items. I used to love to see her lotions and potions! I have a strong memory of her skin being so soft and then remembered that she used Ponds. I gave it a try and I am a believer. It works beautifully and it always makes me think of my nana.

I keep a small container of baking soda in my bathroom. Occasionally, I sprinkle some on my wet toothbrush and brush my teeth, then brush with toothpaste to get rid of the taste. Alway compliments on clean teeth from the hygienist when I go in for a dental cleaning.

🎉 The way I always use the envelopes is to pay our lawn service. They have to have cash, so we leave it in an envelope on the door. However, when I was a small child, my mother would always have them in her purse, and she would open them up and give them to me to draw on at church to keep me quiet

To remove the stains,try dawn dish soap,white vinegar and hot water.spray onto stains.let sit twenty minutes.wash as usual.
Dishwasher pods also work.
Another trick,make a paste with baking soda and dawn dish soap,pat into stains.let sit until dry,scrub with a toothbrush.wash as normal, using tide pods

I use envelopes a lot for making lists, notes and as a scratch pad. No shaving cream? Use a little moisturizing lotion. Works great! I'm making French onion chicken in the crockpot. I started carmelizing onions in the crockpot this morning, added .99 / lb. chicken thighs a few hours later and a can of Campbell's condensed French Onion Soup I purchased on sale. About 15 minutes before I'm ready to eat, I'll top the chicken with Swiss cheese to melt. My house smells amazing right now. Have a wonderful weekend!

I framed a doily my great-grandmother made in the 1890's. It looks gorgeous...also had a bedspread my grandmother made in the 50'a and use it as a tablecloth for special dinners. I am making pantry and freezer meals at least twice a week when the "use by" date" gets close. Also, we had some very warm weather, and I entertained the dog with ice cubes outside...never ends what you can make/use around the house. I use bar soup in the bath/shower...much cheaper than ther shower liquids. gels and I like it so much better

My mother makes doilies still and I request one every year because once she is gone, it will be a lost art in our family. I know they are old fashioned and don’t work in modern decor but my house is filled with them and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The needle she uses is one she has had since she learned as a child and she has made so many of them that the needle has confirmed to her fingers and she can’t use any other needle to crochet with. My house will always be filled doilies… 💖💖
Just tried bar shampoo! Works great, lasts a long time. And it comes in a small recyclable cardboard box with NO plastic. I am so happy with this change.

I still use Ponds cold cream as a cleanser, Coty Airspun loose powder to finish my makeup, and Sally Hansen Miracle Gel nail polish and top coat. Vaseline for makeup removal, chapped lips, under eye cream, and rough heels and hands. Oh, and Dove soap. Love em all!

Dove beauty bar… I actually bought it fairly recently because the store was out of my regular brand, and as soon as I opened it, I was transported back to my grandmother’s house in the 80s. She used Dove and the scent is unmistakeable!
Dove was recommended to me by a pediatrician in 1985 when my first baby had sensitive skin. The whole family used it after that It's all I every buy.

I never buy prepared food. I cook soups and stews as the staple diet and that way save by using the less expensive cuts of meat. I get 4 meals out of one pot of either soup or stew and even a little left to add to my little dogs bowls.😃

The product that I don’t do it out and have used for 25 years is Oil of Olay. So many new expensive products but I love my tried and true!
My mum used it until she died at 91. The funeral director commented on her beautiful skin

I have an idea on how to reuse a crockpot. If the unit wore out, use the dish and lid to store breads and other baked goods on your kitchen counter. If the lid broke, use the dish as a fruit bowl. If you are lucky, you may find a lid to fit at Goodwill or a tag sale. Another possible use for the dish is using it as a casserole in the oven.

Another use is the crock for a planter, especially succulents as there's no drainage in it.
I love estate sales and collect old linens when I can find them. Thank you for the tip on getting stains out. It would work well in our Texas summers. Another favorite of mine is finding old tools. They are made so much better than what you can get now. As for beauty items, I quit wearing makeup and only use the original Oil of Olay face cream. My grandma had beautiful skin and that is what she used.

Oh. My. Goodness! My entire life, my Mom has had a drawer where she stores envelopes that came in the mail to use as scratch paper. I actually took a screenshot of you holding the envelopes to send to her. She’ll love it!
As far as vintage self care products go, I do love my shampoo and conditioner bars. I really like them way better than the overly chemical liquid that’s sold in the wasteful plastic landfill fodder. And I don’t know that this is so much vintage as it is ancient, but a little bit of olive oil is one of the absolute best skin moisturizers available. And its ingredients list is clean enough to eat. Lol. If cosmetics are toxic enough I wouldn’t eat them, I really don’t like to put them on my skin.

Another great video! Yes, use vintage WELL MADE items. There is a reason they have lasted 50-100 years. Sally Hansen- yes that is what my Mother used when she did her nails. I also started doing my own spice mixes a couple years ago and I love that it doesn’t have any questionable ingredients and preservatives. I am right on your wave length! Also still LOVE the smell of original Jergens cherry almond lotion. It is a comfort smell!!!😊

Great results on the tablecloth! It’s so pretty. I make my own spice mixes, the packets never impressed me. I spent today making red sauce and lasagna to make meals for my house and my mom. Making copycat Olive Garden breadsticks to go along with it, as well as oat banana bread and a pot of chicken Chile soup to share with mom as well. She is 80 and used to make everything from scratch but doesn’t really cook anymore for just her (my dad passed 24 years ago) so this way I know she’s getting several weekly meals except when she goes to taco Tuesday with her friends! 😂thanks for the video and I’m making the pot pie next week, she would like that (and I totally pie crust challenged! Some turn out perfectly and then I do the same thing and it turns out all wrong..smh!) I use ponds and Vaseline for my face (and feet). My grandmother didn’t have any wrinkles at 96 and that’s what she used!

There are three long standing items I particularly like when it comes to personal care. The first is Nivea Creme, the original Nivea moisturiser in the blue tub, it's been around since 1911 and the recipe has barely changed since then which tells you something. The second item is the Dove soap bar, this doesn't give your skin that dried out feeling after using it, and it smells lovely, not overly strong. My third item is Vaseline, not only can you use it on your body but it is also great for all sorts of uses around the house. I keep a jar in the bathroom and a second one in my toolbox. 😊

I’ve been using my envelopes to make my own little post it notes attached with a piece of scotch tape. I was always misplacing those little post it packs. Pot pie looks great! I’ve gone back to Sally Hansen for quite a few years now. Those other expensive polishes didn’t even last on my nails. Their gel polish is really good also (it’s not like salon gel, no light to dry and comes off with regular remover. It’s just an all in one base coat, color and top coat).

I use Pond’s moisture cream on my face , neck and under my foundation. I have used this I was in my 20’s. I am now 76 years old and still use it. I have people ask me what make-up I wear but I tell them it is what I wear under my makeup that makes a difference

My mom had an empty scouring powder plastic container that she cut down and kept in the shower. We would put about 1 tablespoon of cream rinse in and fill it with water, stir it with our finger and then use it to pour through our hair. Prevented lot of wasted cream rinse and it did the job pretty well , no tangles in my long hair.
I bought a lovely vintage tablecloth this year with pumpkins and autumn flowers on!
Am so pleased with it, it is on our dining room table!

Self care is Epsom salt baths and plain Vaseline for moisturizer on heals, hands and elbows. Then I’ll take what’s left on my hands after applying and rub them on my face now I’m older, or use rose hip oil. I rarely polish my nails but use the same stuff as you if I do.

I was reading some of the comments, and I was surprised at how many of them are in my house for daily use. Envelope scratch paper, Jergens lotion, etc. I also use cast iron that is so old and looks like new. I have a cast iron griddle that is over 100 years old and is my go to for sandwiches, pancakes. I sometimes think that I was born frugal.
Canning is also a great way to save money. My pantry stays full.😊

I use homemade rice or flax seed bags for a variety of uses! They’re so simple to make, just sew a piece of scrap fabric (be sure to use natural fiber, like 100% cotton flannel) about 12 or 15 inches square, on 3 sides with right sides together. Then fill about half-full with plain uncooked white rice or flax seed, tuck a half-inch of fabric inside the bag so you only have the right side of the fabric showing from the outside, and sew the opening closed.
You can put one (or more!) in the freezer to use as an instant cooling pack for bumps or sprains or to place over your face for cooling relaxation, OR put one in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time until pleasantly heated for a hot pack for achy muscles or a hand warmer. If you like, you can even add a tablespoon or two of dried lavender flowers inside when you’re making the bag.
As long as you make sure they never get wet, they’ll be good to use and last as long as the fabric does! If you live in a humid climate or have humid summers, you may want to store them inside a plastic bag - just remember to remove them from the bag before microwaving.
My grandma & mom made these in decades past, and now I make them. They make great inexpensive gifts for the holidays.

I have 2 sizes of that strainer that were my Grandma's. I found a 1991 Scanpan for $3. Been making own taco seasoning for years. Use used envelopes to save seeds in and write grocery list on, put any coupons inside the envelope.

I've found brocade and linen tablecloths that were torn or had holes in them. I cut them up, hem and make them into dish towels. They make perfect lint free tea towels. I used my strainer two days ago to puree sweet potatoes. Earlier this summer to make tomato juice. Will likely be using it for applesauce shortly.

Well, I grew up on a farm. The one product that has always been in our house is Bag Balm. The big green tin is a familiar sight. Grampa used it on the cows udders, he used it on his hands, so did Grammie. Mom and Dad did the same. I think that salve could soothe anything! More conventional products would be Dial Soap, Jergen's lotion and Camay. Every time I smell these scents, I think of the women in my family. Thanks for asking Emmy. Next time you do biscuits or anything that you have to "cut in" the butter into flour grate FROZEN butter into the flour then all you have to do is "fluff" the butter into the flour.

It's a little silly, but my mom always washed her face with Noxema- the original one. She had flaming red hair and delicate skin and loved how it made her feel. I use it just to remember her...such sweet memories. You mentioned that you don't like your phone in the kitchen. I have a phone case where my phone case is a magnet and it sticks to a folding wallet that has my key fob attached. This way I always have the essentials. A bonus is around the house I can stick my phone to things like the microwave (holds my phone at eye level for recipes),

Hi Emmy! Great job restoring that tablecloth, it turned out beautifully! That strainer is actually a chinois, I have one just like it and it still has the box and says it's a chinois. It's very useful in canning tomatoes since they have to be peeled for safety reasons. 😊 I just adore most older products. I bought a food chopper thinking it would make my life easier, I do a lot of canning and was thinking especially for salsa. Nope, hate it! And hate that I wasted the money on it. My good old fashioned product is a knife, turns out I'd rather hand chop 40 cups of veggies than mess with that thing! 😂 Thanks for a great video. God Bless!

It comes in a generous 15 ounce tub and costs under $5 at my local Wal-Mart and lasts me about a year. It’s the only face cream my mother ever used (she’s 74) and the scent reminds me of her coming in to kiss me goodnight with it slathered on her face. ❤

I used that trick for years on old linens. I always hung them out on the line. A good wind blows a lot of the wrinkles out. I use to use a sieve like yours for jelly making back in the day. I lined it with cheese cloth. I updated with a cheap auction find juicer.

I can identify more with that situation, but it also encourages me to make the best of it when that sort of oopsie happens to me in the kitchen (which is often does). For a year now, I’ve been using Amish bar soap to wash my face. It is very gentle and leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean. (I’m 70 years old).
I have my maternal grandmother’s Sunbeam stand mixer. The last time I used it, I made one of her famous pound cakes. The mixer still works very well for cakes. I use my Kitchen Aid for gluten free doughs.

I have two strainers , one is new in vintage box! . I am saving it for my daughter in law's Christmas present. The other one , I use to make grape juice. So handy ! I got them at garage sales for $2 !! I just bought 2 Presto pressure cookers for $15 and $25..

I use hankies instead of tissues. They are charming and softer and don't fall apart and pretty and i always keep one in my right pocket. If you go through my wardrobe you will find one in every right pocket!

I bought a beautiful vintage table cloth with bright lemons and foliage for a couple dollars. Lemon prints are so popular now. I too used the oxyclean and it worked pretty good. Vintage linens are the best. I got my Son hooked on cast iron skillets. It's so much fun.

My mother inherited from her mom a bronze mortar and pestle which is over 125 years old and which I have now. She used it for crushing all kinds of items such as garlic, nuts, etc. Lately I've been using it for crushing garlic with the peal which makes removing it is so much easier. .

My husband went back to the reusable razor. The disposable ones are too pricey and don’t work as well. Turned our son’s and son in-law onto them 😊

I have a 1930s or 40s linen table cloth I bought over the summer in Elijah, GA, while we were on vacation. It too has several stains on it. I'm going to be trying this tomorrow outside since it's supposed to be a sunny day. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful tip. I can't wait to try this method and put this absolutely beautiful vintage table cloth on my table. By the way, mine is so similar to yours, same color 💐 and same kind of fabric.

Chicken pot pie - Three of my favorite things - hahaha
I remember my grandma washing plastic bags and sheets of plastic that cooked ham would be wrapped in at the local shop. Sometimes she even hung them on the washing line in the yard to dry! This was in the 1960s. I buy zippy bags to portion my mince, and to store scones and buns in the freezer. I wash them in hot soapy water, dry and reuse them, just like grandma would do! I love that little sieve. It would be perfect for grinding dehydrated herbs.
We make our own seasonings too. We’ve pretty much found that any seasoning mix or blend (as well as boxed staples and sauces) has a copycat recipe online. We even did a series of videos back a few years ago that we coined “Make It Yourself May.” 👍

I loved this video on old-fashioned ways! My old-fashioned tip is using baby oil for my eye makeup removal. I have used it since high school in the early 70’s. You don’t need to buy name brand - Walmart & generic work just as well. I use cotton balls for this & keep my eye out at thrift stores, yard sales, estate sales for them.
