  • In this video i will be letting you of the effects large tires have had on my old Land Rover Discovery 1. There are some benefits to them, but also many negatives.

I had 285/75R16s on my Land Cruiser BJ70 and hated them for their bad road manners. Changed to 255/85R16 (yes 255, not 235) which came with a lot of benefits. They are a little taller, the narrower tire drives better on the street, gives a little less resistance, fits better under your wheel arches, can be used with narrower rims which is lighter and the tires themself are lighter. Additionally i like the classic narrow look more on older vehicles.
Off road they are pretty much equal to wider tires in my opinion. The downside is a very restricted tire choice.
I chose Toyo Open Country MT and never regreted this choice. Not that noisy, great on wet tarmac compared to the BFG MT. On the other hand you need to rotate them regularly to avoid uneven wear and the profile suffers from sharp rocks.

@@riverbedoverland I'm thinking about doing 255s on my D1 as well. What modifications did you do to get them to fit right?

Helpful video thanks. Been running 33s on my Disco 1 for about 6 months now and agree with everything you covered in the video.

Great infos! I have 205/80R16, and now it's time to change them so I was uncertain between the same or 235/70R16, so you clarified many points to me. Thanks for sharing (Discovery 1 300tdi)

I went from the stock 235/75 r16 (29") all terrains to a set off 245/75 r16 (30,5") mud terrains on my Disco 300tdi and I can't be more happy with them. I have bigger exhaust, the diesel pump mod and more turbo pressure, I also have a 2" lift. I am really surprise with de capabilities of the Disco, I'm looking at future to go to 265/75 r16 and put a Defender 110 rear axle wich is more heavy duty than the stock one.
Great video as always, greetings from Argentina!

I find with my 265/75/16 the car doesn’t drive too bad, we do a combination of on and off road so went with an all terrain

Very thorough review. Right now I have BF Goodrich K02 315/70R17 but these are larger than I prefer. My next tire will 285/75R17. That seems to be a good choice for my 2018 Toyota 4Runner. New subscriber here.

The largest legal size is normally 235/70R16 I have only once many years ago come across a Discovery 1 with legal 7:50 R 16 tires which come to 31inch diameter! CT Discos had 7:00 R 16 which are 30 inch!
Why lift any vehicle and go to over-sized tires I do not understand. In 50 years off roading on 5 continents I used snow-chains a lot, also in mud and never had more problems than others with wider, bigger and higher! Probably even less since one tends to "read" the area driven on a bit more than others!

It all depends on the tracks you want to do.

I have the same tires on my Discovery 2 V8. I think with a gear swap they are great off-road in every way I don't like skinny tires I don't buy the theory about drag and all that crap because I have seen skinny tires sinking really really soft sand so easy

I'm always feeling like my disco with 205/80R16s looks more like a toy car because the proportions are wrong lol.
