I love fake or fortune, it adds an extra layer to the conservation by introducing the history behind some of these pieces. Can’t wait for the BBC to make another series but I imagine it would take some time just to produce the ones they have already.
Me and my art friends watch these and it's quite funny to hear teenage art students sit at lunch going "I can understand not having the materials but over painting like that is irresponsible" "Yeah, I kinda expected him to say they used Staples too" "I mean it wouldn't work with that painting but I did kind of expect them to use fish glue or something" "I'm glad he kept his composure." Someone once asked if we were talking about you and we were so surprised that we ran into another fan in the wild
After watching 7 or so of his videos... Julian: So I'm applying this layer.... Me: Isolation layer! Helps show the colours of the painting when its complete! Separates your work from the original artist's work!
At least y'alls protesting isnt just crazy violence. Sending yall love either way, just glad to see actual protest instead of rioting and lighting things on fire. Gives me some hope.

Previous conservator: *receives painting called blue skies smilin’ at me* Also conservator: “Ah yes, I will retouch this yellow sky painting, because that’s obviously how it is meant to look I guess. No need to clean it or anything”
Color mixing is pretty wild, especially when done on the canvas. With oil paint, the underlying colors can show through, so to get specific blends, one has to paint in layers, and credit to BGR for working it.
one of my favorite parts is reading his comment section bc its basically just all of us being like " I love how Julian roasts past conservators" its so funny. Julian we love your work. I'm re-watching this video a third time
I know most of his clients want to keep their anonymity, so people don't try to steal their treasures. But this one! I really want to know just how excited they were. Like they gave him a yellow painting! It's now vibrant and breathtaking!! How impressed were they?!
I'd love to see all the client reactions to the restored paintings. I'm here in awe staring at the process and results. I want to see the clients witnessing their painting all anew for the first time.
My favourite part of these is that even though he’s alone in his studio he’s still dressed up like he’s going on a first date. If this were me and I was alone, 50/50 I’m not wearing pants.
My artistic talents are modest, at best. My house clothes tend to be very informal and possibly incomplete. Oddly enough, I always dress nicely and completely for my studio. It makes me feel sharper, more in control. My beard is not nearly so nice as is Julian's, though.
There comes a time when watching you work, a person either just shakes their head or goes "...dude." When you made that impression and then transferred it to the fill in material to replicate brush strokes of the original artist, you became a Jedi master. Wow.
Would love to see a “day in the life” video. How many different paintings do you work on, what kind of conversations with clients (would love! to eavesdrop on one of those), do you do research or other professional development for art history purposes or conservation purposes, what does testing look like for various paintings. I get that the magical part of your job is the work done on one specific painting and the transformational journey, but there’s so much of your career that seems fascinating. Maybe another TH-cam channel would partner with you and follow you around.
@@Bildgesmythe - Could be a gentlemen's club - lots of cigars, pipes and whiskey on the rocks.....don't come at me; I like giving the pictures he works on a back story. ;)

i love that julian is so professional throughout most of his video and then in comments we’re like: “YES JULIAN DISS THE SHIT OUT OF THESE PAST CONSERVATORS”
I know you probably won't even see this, but, as an artist who deals and struggles a lot with severe anxiety, your videos bring me a lot of peace. Seriously, you have no idea how much they calm me. Thank you
When Julian says “What’s so exciting about this painting is just how dirty it is”, I got the same pure positive vibe as when Marie Kondo said “I love mess!” The cleaning is always my favorite part, too. ^_^
Probably not very professional to bash others in the industry from Julian's point of view - but I would LOVE this!!!! A sin-staple-o-meter for the win!
RDSwords oh my gosh! I was reframing an old painting in our house (frame is irreparably damaged, so I’ve recreated it) and when all was disassembled and I found staples, I immediately said (to two very unimpressed dogs), “Oh, Julian would have something to say about this. Shame on you, prior framer!”
I just like to imagine the phonecall to the client after he cleans it. "Hey, so that painting you sent? Ya, that one. Its actually a very colorful painting. Its not in a brownscale."
Go back 2 videos. It took me until that video to realize why he kept using his dad's hot table and not the new one he built. He was using the big table for the BIG painting. And it took FOREVER
I’ve always thought Julian’s ability to match colors was his superpower. But seeing that silicon mold I now realize that his astonishing amount of knowledge, experience, inventiveness, creativity, technique and patience are all part of one big bundle of Julian awesomeness.
"I would film those and show you them but we're already at 30 some odd minutes and hopefully some of you are still awake, uh, and I fear that if I continue just to show retouching, you won't be." I wonder if Julian realizes just how soothing his work and voice is? I would LOVE to sit through hours and hours of watching him bring these beautiful paintings back to life.
Me sitting on a Gymball, stuffing my mouth with some Pasta: "What kind of uncultured conservator would use that much paint to retouch, let alone OIL PAINT. Unbelievable..."

Trying to clean shelves to restock would mean a riot.
I was purposely waiting for the ad just to see how he was going to do the transition. By the time he started saying the thing about leaving an impression, I knew I was too late to guess that it was about to happen.
Me when he begins retouching: that green is gonna stand out! Idk how he’s gonna make it blend Me five seconds later: oh shit Also, idk if it’s just me who found that impression thing he did really cool, but goddamn that was cool.
recently in art school we had an exercise that pretty much showed off how much the underpaint can affect a painting, so the second julian brought out the Big Green Blob i knew we had a big storm comin
This is also where my intuition, for getting what's in my head onto the paper, falls flat on its face. I've seen artist put greens and purples on areas where they wanted to draw skintones and asked myself: "did they slip, when picking this?". Only after it's blended in it suddenly feels essential to the overall look. Can't really wrap my head around that yet...
Yup, it's sort of the same as matching makeup. It's not just about matching a literal color from that area of the face/canvas, but being able to step back and figure out the proper undertone to then layer on top of. He is a master at this, among many other things 😁👏👏👏💜
Oh my god, I love the comment section of these videos. Y’all are so welcoming. It has the vibe of someone sitting with hot cocoa, a giant blanket and just chilling while roasting a bad movie. And I am here for it! *grabs a pillow and gets comfy*

I love how this channel's audience are all wrapped up with bundles of blankets, eating all sorts of junk food and noodles and are overly enthusiastic about belgian linen and tacks. And the great thing is, so am i. Hahaha
Me too.

Yes, that is something I would love to see, too.
Wouldn't it be funny if the client really liked the color yellow, and were kinda disappointed that the painting wasn't yellow anymore? :D
@@MrXerios that's a fair point! Good or bad, still curious what they thought :)
Nathan Binns pants are kinda required when dealing with people or on a video or mainly when u have potent chemicals rolling around...
