Are fishes normally sticky? What about rabbit skin? Maybe that’s how the scales and fur stay on.
@@jimmiles33 is that a serious question?
In my restoration days I would always choose the land-based fish for my glue.

Is anyone else feeling unreasonably emotional by how utterly *stunning* the colours and textures of the clothing are once the grime & varnish are cleaned away? Just me misting up over here?
The white on a couple of the dresses literally made me gasp when he cleaned them. Stunning is the right word for sure!
I love this. I feel the same way. Do you ever feel this way with other art forms? I do with music a lot too, acting..(=
No, it's the same for me. My mouth was hanging open when he reavealed the beautiful light blue on the first dress and the pale violet on the fourth. Don't even let me start on the faces, which suddenly have so much more dimension and look so fresh. I loved every second and could have watched for hours.
He makes me cry
Yes!!! These paintings are so beautiful. No wonder we think they're boring when they're all crusted up with grime!
Someone needs to make a game in a similar style to Car Mechanic Simulator or PC Building Simulator but it's Painting Restoration Simulator.

@alphant1That would work wonders for the impregnation.
Julian: removes old varnish and the vibrant colors appear
me: *suprised pikachu face*
I really should know by now that old varnish is pretty dirty but my brain has old paintings saved as very muted and odd yellowish skin color XD
Agreed. The first time I saw a restoration video on this channel I was so shocked at how bright the colors were. Beforehand, I'd just assumed that renaissance painters liked yellow and brown.
@@mikkurzhal7390 SAME!!! I was like wow ok well thats not really my cup of tea (yellow and brown) for colors but who am i to judge lol
Might have to overwrite that save of old yellow paintings with new vibrant paintings XD

Julian: Come, you’re safe now my sweet child...
that is just the sweetest thing 🥺🥺
He zooms on the faces for us because he knows it’s our favorite part when cleaning also 🥰
Man: lemme play you some Bach while I clean this painting
Me: ok...?
Me five mins later: damn I didn't realise how much I needed this 🥺
I 100% agree. I just wish he had turned the music sound down a bit and the ambient sounds up. Love the ASMR of cleaning.
It strangely made me emotionnal like I felt so priviledged to see the reveal of the true nature of the painting !
"No, no, no, don't end it here, don't end it here... this is the best pa... God dammit"
Same!! I was so caught up in it I didn’t realize the video was about to end right before the touch up part! Nooooo!
I honestly just said 'Julian NO' when he ended it haha
I felt the same way!!!
When I saw the video was 30 minutes, and then saw the epic amount of damage, I knew the video couldn’t be long enough. So I checked the title and sure enough it said part 1. I can’t wait for part 2.

Imagine working on your tan for hundreds of years only for this guy to come and swab it away in a matter of hours
😂
Yes, indeed!
After years of rewatching this video I can never get over the varnish removal of the clothes. The artist was really a master of painting fabrics, the subtlety and colors are stunning
No one has ever cared about their followers as much as this man and his few minutes of Bach and cleaning
When he said, I'll leave you with some Bach, I immediately said "OKAY GOOGLE PLAY THE SOUND OF RAIN!", made myself some tea, and jumped back into bed. This was definitely the best Monday morning.
I say that all the time haha!
I wish this will happen to me today, all I did was stay up until the next morning in my bathtub writing 8 long paragraphs about the West side of Rome and how it crumbled. Attend 3 Google meets. Write a "Short response" that was about how technology will change over time, Do a survey 4 times, because it couldn't save. I've always thought that would be a fun and fascinating career, but I wouldn't be able to handle the pressure lol.
emeralddarkness same
this is me every time he uploads LMAO
Perhaps he should have uploaded the unedited continuous 200 hours of footage for you to realize how dull and tedious it can also be. You really need to be extremely patient to do this kind of work.
Johnny lol hence the word “phase”
Him : delicately put nice, calculated, even pressure
also him, a few moments later : put up few cinderblocks on top of said painting.
The only thing more satisfying than his conservation skills is his smooth transitions into the ad reads.
linustechtips should take note
Linus doing a good transition, I like how bad his are.

I don’t think someone as talented as Julian is short of work. I think he was excited at what he will be able to achieve with this painting.
Haha I know, it was just that the chance presented itself for the joke.

@@BaumgartnerRestoration I just love the fact that you randomly have concrete blocks stashed in your studio. XD You never cease to surprise and amaze.
When I see a wide shot of him bending over a painting while doing the cleaning, my own back begins to ache. The DOZENS OF HOURS he must spend hunched-over!
Nice to see he is using archival quality cinder blocks and pH neutral drywall. They are heavy, but effective and safe--and easy to undo by future conservators.
You know you've become addicted to these videos when you get excited whenever you hear the words "Washi kozo"
If I was a painting I would trust this guy with my life
Does anyone else want to see a "swabs per painting" recap at the end of these?
Yes, please!
Just a picture of the related garbage would put plenty into perspective but is inconvenient not only for possible recycling but also because he takes turns in working on different pieces frequently.
Me too, but I'm pretty sure he's said before that he does cleaning in 'sections' so as to retain mental awareness.
Cristine's peely bag but it's Julian's swabs bag
"I'm always looking for new technology" he says as he picks up cinder blocks 😂 amazing work!
but those are special cinder blocks ... they are archival and reversable
He only said "tips, tricks, materials and techniques". But still really funny lol
@@patti441 Because it's important that everything he does can be undone by any future conservator.
When he started cleaning the white shawl of the 3rd girl, I was just sitting there like 😲 “WoOoOWwW!”
It looks like all the girls are looking at what he's doing at that point 😂
I know right! I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it
Believe me when I say I almost CRIED when I was watching the old varnish come off, the beautiful, vibrant colors, and just seeing the faces and skin clear up, the details of the clothe, such as the folds at the end of the dresses, was and is magnificent. The shading was much clearer and wow it was just so beautiful and satisfying to see. Thank you for all your hard work and for letting us viewers have this moment.

His art restoration is the most satisfying thing ever. This piece is in such a bad shape, but I’m glad he will be able to restore it🤍
Edit: omg this is the most likes I’ve gotten ever🥺
It is, I'm not even into art at all but I love these videos, calming yet satisfying.
Luckily this painting is a copy of a well known fresco so he can use the fesco as a reference image to restore this painting.
I watch and listen to him talk when I am working and it keeps me sane. Except that one time he was having a bad day during live feed. I was an anxious as he was.
I can't imagine how much the owners would need to pay for a conservation as extensive as this.
Carmella Papa I’m thinking that’s why it took them a year to give him the go ahead. Saving those $$
If were the owner and watched this video, I'd just sign. No questions asked
I wouldn't be surprised if the cost is close or even equal to the original value of the painting.
