    This video has a twin. Except I made it about Digital Art: th-cam.com/video/xu7stFSOaqg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aeuzN9IoI48Ckdp-
    It's a very similar style to this video where I breakdown everything I know about digital art from start to finish.

      I would love for the next one of these "professional development" series videos on how to spec out what you want to the printers...and your decisions on size choice and why, borders or no borders, stuff like that. Could be a short one, but a would be nice addition to a "how do i do that" ....Make sense ?

    I buy Golden Fluid acrylic in 1 oz sizes. Because the paint is so fluid and so pigmented, these tiny bottles last forever. This is the best paint. It changed my whole painting game.

    Fantastic overview for acrylic painters! I can't tell you how resistant I was to things like prepping my canvases, varnishing, and adding hanging hardware. It really does feel like being an artist when I have an entirely completed painting from soup to nuts.

    Photographing varnished paintings tip: buy a polarizing filter. They are cheap and will remove all the white shine from the painting, leaving it beautiful on the whole piece, showing it in all the glory with its juicy colors ;)

    • @TenHundred
      @TenHundred  หลายเดือนก่อน +45

      Agreed. I made a whole video on Circular Polarization Filters for artists a couple years ago. Artists who film or photograph their art need to know about those things!

    • @rachelb1119
      @rachelb1119 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I bought a polarizing filter for this and it’s weird because in certain settings it does amazing at taking glare off of tables and flat surfaces but when I go to actually shoot the art it does nothing. Tried rotating the filter and nothing happened. 😢

    • @celtyrysuje
      @celtyrysuje หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @rachelb1119 you need to rotate it every time you change position of your camera. It rotates freely so you can slowly change the angle depending on how much glare you need to delete

    • @TenHundred
      @TenHundred  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@rachelb1119I’ve noticed when you’re straight on to you art they don’t do much. They do a lot when you are at an angle especially when the light is coming from the opposite direction of your camera

    • @rachelb1119
      @rachelb1119 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it’s doesn’t work in every lighting situation. I’ll definitely have to play with it more to figure out the best setup. I was turning the filter but couldn’t find a sweet spot for the situation I was in. I’ll have to experiment more and see if I can take advantage of the filter. Otherwise I just use the old stand-by… take the art outside on a cloudy day to take pictures.

    Actually excellent and useful tips, 10/10 my boy.
    Yes wood is the best to paint on for acrylics for all the durability you mentioned. I jigsaw and rout mine to get away from the rectilinear world.
    Sealing: WOOD, all sides, backs, insides. Wood will draw in moisture over time and contract and expand so seal it, cheap anything paint on the back is fine, don't use expensive stuff.
    Sealing: CANVAS, just the exposed faces and sides. Canvas needs to breathe, leave the back exposed. This also allows future peeps to revive a sagging canvas by applying hot water with a sponge on the rear to get the weft and weave to shrink, thus tightening it again.

    One of your more entertaining vids! Great job educating. As a wood worker myself, for anything I make that hangs like a painting: I like to make and attach a French cleat - hidden inside the back, so that you can hang the cleat and subsequently the item on the wall so that it is level. Bonus with this method is that it holds all 4 sides flush with the wall instead of leaning away from it

    As a guy with a woodworking background, I can confirm that sealing both sides of a wood panel is definitely the way to go. Sealing only one surface is bad, because it'll transfer the bulk if the woods movement to the unprotected area, concentrating, thus increasing, its' effect. Not good. Also, as to paint drying in the bases of your brushes (heel clogging) , old school sign painters have a fix for this. Clean your brushes as best you can, then dip them in lard oil. This will keep any residual paint from hardening. Wash the brush in soap and water prior to the next use and you're in biz. I've heard talk that the oil can damage the brushes over time, but haven't had any problem with this. Great video!

      I rough wash my brushes after use and then leave for half an hour standing in hand gel - the sort we've had since covid, cheap as chips will do - then wash in warm soapy water, rinse and apply a tiny amount of hair conditioner. Takes no time and keeps your brushes happy.

    The first stretched canvas I ever bought was incorrectly primed so I've been gessoing my own right from the beginning, sometimes 8 or more coats. To get gesso really smooth you need a crescent shaped bit of plastic like a protractor or dough spreader for small canvases up to about 20" and a window squeegee for canvases bigger than that.
    I've only been painting for a couple of years but I've found I still work better on paper than on canvas.

    Hullo Peter, I enjoyed this video much more than I thought I would! Well done SIR! I might offer one tip for painting the reverse side of your art? Yes, you can seal with Gesso. You might consider using a clear gesso or sealer. This will allow the colors on the front (Of canvas) not to be influenced by the color on the back! I like to use a clear gesso to protect the backside and integrity of the wood panel. In some cases I use a regular wood preservative to seal and protect! I often use store brand paints. Like Blick Studio acrylic paints! They lower costs with less pigments or lower quality ingredients. yet Acrylic paints must have a certain level of medium or it will not hold together! SO even the cheapest brands like FolkArt are great for coloring say sculptures! or other craft items!! Grand Video Peter, I hope you do more basic tutorial kinds of videos maybe a simple set up for a mural? You are rather famous for that eh? YES!

    nice info and great video. a couple of other things to consider. there's almost never a time where i trash a brush. old worn out brushes have a place in the tool box as well. they're for dry brushing and/or use for experimental mediums you don't want to use a good brush on. you can trim them for a specific project or need that a store bought brush may not fit your needs with. the other thing is always be archival with how you paint. this is even true for artist just starting out. you never know when your break through will come so it's always best to learn and start by being archival. i consider it part of the foundation when learning to paint. it can help you learn the chemistry that may inform you later and you don't want to develop a style and career as an artist and find that after 10 years all your old paintings are separating from the canvas. i say this because using water on acrylic is fine but you can use too much and diluting the paint too much weakens the binders that help hold it to the canvas or material you're painting on.

    • @MrZynmaster
      @MrZynmaster หลายเดือนก่อน

      also relative to paint the expensive paints vs the cheap ones are made differently. the pigments aren't as strong and the cheaper paints have more ingredients used more so as filler instead of an actual ingredient that helps the intensity of the color and/or the binders that help hold that paint to the canvas.

    Great video! I've been a fan for Golden as well for about 10 years. Their isolation coat product is great - I just wish they made a sprayable version of it!

    Great vid, the algorithm brought me here, new subscriber now! I also like to take a pic of my painting and change it to black and white to check on the values.

    Hey brother, you know what’s missing? A tutorial where you show how you create these epic, polished tutorial videos-how you edit, set up the cameras, and everything in between. It would be an honor to learn from a master like you❤
