Inherited from a relative, this painting of Venice's Grand Canal arrived worse for wear with some glaringly obvious problems. There were however, a few surprises in store for us along the way to the Grand Reveal.
    Note:
Yup, I forgot to include the footage of the back showing the windows that I spent so much time creating. 🤦‍♂️ I’ll post some photos to my instagram and video to the epilogue which will be up on my Patreon

I enjoy your comments (both prior to and after restoration) where you simply appreciate the painting before you. Sometimes you provide a few details about the subject or historical bits about the work. But mostly it's your sense of appreciation. That's what sets your work apart. It's not as much a problem to be solved, it's a work of art that needs loving care to return to a state where it can be enjoyed as it was meant to be.

I love watching your videos for so many reasons, but one is that as an artist I have learned a lot about what to consider when I make a painting. I’ve been watching for years and have adjusted materials (for example I was taught to use dammar varnish in school, but I switched out of that because of the yellowing). Pretty much all modern canvas have staples, but as I start stretching my own canvas I will switch over to tacks. Sometimes it’s fun when I’m painting to think of the conservator in the future who may be working on it too, should I be so lucky as to have my work last that long and be that significant hahaha. It means a lot seeing the care that you put into what you do.

After listening to you explain the limitations and difficulties of working with retouching paint as an unforgiving medium, I am all the more blown away by what you achieve, and have an even greater respect for the refined and near-perfect colour-matching and perceived blending that you are able to produce using years of trial, error and dedicated practice. This is one of the most amazing results I have seen, and I am sure the original artist would have been delighted by your recreation of these ethereal clouds. All the more for being cognicent of the intended shapes and strokes of the sky, instead of taking the less painstaking route of tentatively piecing together each complex dash and dot of colour.
Thank you for sharing your expertise with the world (and now too with Kit - whose humourous faces are most entertaining!). Oh, nothing like a political comment in the middle of the comment section of a completely unrelated video. Always draws a crowd.
Let me throw my 2 cents in while we're here:
The US Constitution is a living and breathing document. That's how the founders intended it. What you refer to as "overpaint" is merely the natural growth during its lifetime. It is not a static art object but a living avatar of the American psyche.
The American people ARE the government. It is not separate from us, it is us. Whereupon hatred of the American government is hatred of the American people.
Democracy functions best when the most citizens possible actively engage in its governance. It weakens and devolves into fascism when people give in to fear and irrationality.

I really appreciate the way Julian keeps his focus on the customer by discussing and validating his approach. This is also evident in other videos, even when I get the feeling that Julian might prefer something different. This is true professionalism. Also, I have begun to appreciate the difference between restoration to the original painting, restoration to the status of the painting after a previous restoration, and doing what is needed to prevent the need for future restoration, while still allowing for that future restoration to occur. I also like the discussions about using modern materials where they make sense. Plus, these videos are just delightful to watch. Even the ones without Kitt in the background.

From someone who hasn't a clue about restoration, except for, what you have enlightened me with, and what I've observed of others on-line. And I rank you well above above all the others on the internet, doing restorations for some pretty impressive galleries and action houses. I've recommended you above them. I had this queued up to watch, then wandered over to instagram for a sec in between youtube videos. Saw that this was Dan Avidan's grandmother's painting. RAN over here to watch the video. The crossover event we didn't know we needed!

So glad you squeezed this into one shortish video even though it must have taken hours and days to complete YOUR masterpiece....

Gorgeous work WOW. This is some real and evident LOVE being put into this old painting. What a joy to see the reveal after so many careful steps.

Julian, amongst many other things, is a 🧙. What’s so extraordinary about this project is how subtle Julian’s work is. There is no evidence of his work. The painting has been, to put it simply, restored in the truest sense of the word. Well done! 👏🏻

Beautiful work! I've known about art restoration in the abstract for a long time, but this is my first time seeing the process in such detail. The amount of care that goes into it is extraordinary. Kudos.

I've watched probably 90% of the videos on this channel and this is without a doubt one of the most impressive retouchings I've seen Julian do. I also greatly appreciate how much uncut retouching there is in this video, it's my favorite part.
