Join me on this voyage as we search for buried treasure. I mean buried issues this 1772 oil painting may have. In this first episode, I breakdown what I see once a painting comes in my door and we begin the disassembly. While we hoped for smooth sailing, alas, it's drama on the high seas.

I think it's the opposite actually. From what he said and from my experience as a painter, a lot of that retouching is made basically how i would paint those fluffy clouds if I sat there and painted fluffy clouds. It's more of a "I'm a conservator" "No, youre a painter".
Can we just talk about how good julien is at speaking? I've really noticed it in his studio tour video but he doesn't have that many jump cuts and his speech is just clear. It's like he's giving a public speech.

Actually he did (technically). There's a video where he restored a painting that he already restored 5 years ago
The only one that sort of qualifies (because he was the previous conservator) is the one that Rick Morty mentioned. Revisiting an Old Friend; The Second Conservation of Anne. I highly recommend it. Then again, I highly recommend all his videos. Educational and very entertaining. Had to pause a video more than once because I was laughing so much. Also, it's very worth taking the time to read the comments, especially in that video. Someone wrote a short story about Julian and Anne.

Something I find interesting about the painting itself here is that it's almost like a kind of proto-animation or comic. I really like the moving camera in the intro but I think when you have a still frame ( like removing the surface grime ) a still camera would fit better because of the reduced wobble
whereas I didn't, because I felt literally sea-sick at some moments, and not because of the painting subject matter. Nothing wrong with a bit of hand-held, but zooms and pans should be way slower and less frequent, and the focus should be in-focus. I actually had to skip some of the intro and black light stuff because it got too much.
Yeah, I totally love the camera following Julian as a first-person-perspective, but when there is no moving from one place to another the dissonance gives me something like motion sickness.

Julian throws shade in the most polite manner possible.
"Now unfortunately this painting seems to be covered in boats, so I'm gonna start by removing those, then we'll move onto the sky and water, pretty soon I'll have another canvas to sell"
